The personal hotspot is not an app or an icon; it is a setting. You must first have your carrier provision it, then you turn it on in settings. Most carriers charge extra for tethering.

I just bought a MacBook. The first few times it worked when I used the instructional video from teh default MacPage. Now when I try to watch a instructional video I get the message that teh file didn't finish downloading and I ma unable to watch the video at all.
Please help.This means that you have downloadd the file from the internet, and the file did not download completely so the computer can't play it. To fix this, just re-download the file and make sure it finishes.

Where can I get a hold of the "poof" sound effect that plays when you un-dock an app?
I looked in the sounds file under system and it wasn't there. Is there a way I can get access to this sound?

Can you hear other people, but they can't hear you? Here's how I fixed it.
If you're having the same problem I did where you could hear other people on a call, but they couldn't hear you and your microphone worked fine for everything else then you are in the same boat I was.
After a week of trying to fix it, a friend and myself have our phones working correctly again and my phone has been working fine for the past 3 days now.
To fix the problem, we re-downloaded the 4.2.1 file outside of iTunes and did a restore on the phone. (We both restored from a backup and it still worked). You can find the specific file download links on the 4th post on this page: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1052794&page=5 or through apple's support downloads page. Once downloaded, double click the file to open it (iTunes should open) and plug your phone in then do a restore. We both did ours from a backup and it still worked fine, the thing that has to be reinstalled is the update, which is what the restore will do.
It took my friend three tries of downloading until his worked, but for me it worked on the first try.

A friend of mine was having the same problem that I was having where you could hear other people but they couldn't hear you.
We fixed the problem by redownloading the 4.2.1 update. 4th post down on this page: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1052794&page=5 is a list of links to the update files. I downloaded the one for my phone and did a restore (from a backup) after downloading the file and double clicking it so iTunes opens. Since I've done this my phone has been working perfectly again!
It might take you a few tries, it took my friend 3 tries until his worked right and it worked for me on the first try. I'm guessing something was screwing up during the download. -

I accidentally set up my new iPhone 4S as a new phone instead of using the backup I had from my old iPhone 3. Is there anyway to get my texts & contacts from that old backup now?
Neither of the above two posts will help you. If you want to restore your new phone from the backup of your old phone, you will have to start from scratch. On your new phone: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. Once done, you'll now be able to restore the backup of your old phone to your new phone.

Our exchange server crashed and we lost all contact and calendar data. We found an app to get the contacts off of people's phone to import but can't find the same for calendar. How do I get my calendar info off my phone and in to new exchange server?
You'd have to think through this, but it seems like if you are using Outlook, and the items vanished from the Outlook client as well as the server,that you could re-populate Outlook using iTunes.

I'm trying to restore my iPhone 5 to the original settings because it did not sync my contacts from my last phone (it synced from my husband's phone instead). I am trying to delete everything so I can back it up from my previous phone and not my husband's. I keep getting a message saying that files were corrupt so it couldn't restore settings. Ideas?

but have still been unable to backup data using the third party software.
TouchCopy tells me I have no photos or Video ad won't alllow me to copy any of the critical files e.g. Notes, Calendar, Contacts, Messages, etc.
Anyone have any other suggestions for backing up my iPhone? Or help using TouchCopy?
If I am ever able to get TouchCopy to work, should I be using Copy to iTunes or Copy to PC option?

If the data network is not available for some time, to get it again we need to restart the phone instead it is not finding the data network instantly. why cant the iphone searches data net work offten if not available. i am totally disappointed with this!
Still it could not find the data network.it searches for voice network instantly and works too. but even full voice network available, there is no data network.when i restart the phone it could find data network.
Already i reset network settings for two times. -
I do not have my iphone synced with my work email but when I send a text message via my work email any response I get comes to my phone. Why? How do I change that because I do not want my phone connected with my work email?

Do you mean the From field?
You can change it by tapping it, it will give you options based on the other email accounts set up.
You can set a default account here:
Sttings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > scroll down to the Mail section & you will see Default Account. You can change that to your gmail account. -

I'm also very sorry to learn you were not signed up properly for paperless billing in the first place though I'm happy to hear it has been rectified now. Additionally, while an e-mail option is not longer available our chat representatives will be with you as soon as possible pending high volumes. So, let's talk about how you are signed up for auto pay but it did not go through on your first bill. Ultimately, this happened because it takes one bill cycle for auto pay to process. Here is a little story:
My wife dropped her phone and it is done. My contract is up in about 20 days. I called Verizon thinking that this is my problem, as it should be (no protection on my contract, but was surprised by my response. I was told that since I'm so close to my contract being up that Verizon will work with me by allowing me to renew early. Thought to myself, "this is great I'm am getting awesome customer service." Now, after talking to the corporate store, I wish they would have just told me tuff luck buddy. I really could have lived with that. I know the risks of not purchasing some kind of protection. What I have been given is the grand run around and that our computers can't let us do that.
You see, I've learned today that, when you talk to someone on the phone with corporate you get "awesome to have you as a customer and we'll be happy to help you out". Go to the store and get "awesome to have you as a customer, sorry to hear about your problem, but come see us in 20 days and we'll waive the $30 upgrade fee." My words in the quotes, the people are very polite at being able to tell you that they can't do something because the computer will not let them do it and they have no way to bypass this.
Honestly, I have been very happy with the product that I receive from Verizon. At least I will use this time wisely and reconsider my relationship with this company.
I have had service with AT&T and Sprint, I can say that at least you get the same response from the other carriers, regardless of who you talk to.
So what is the real reason that corporate stores don't have same authority as the person you talk to when you call the 922-0204 number?Ice1968, I think you're the first person I have seen here take the ownership of not having a protection plan and the consequences. Most people just blame VZW. I am sorry to hear that they won't let you get a device by visiting a corporate store. In most cases, telephone support doesn't even offer an upgrade early but in your case they did. I wish I could tell you why the store and telephone support operate differently but I can't. From my experience telephone support has a little more leeway to bend the rules a little bit. From our customer perspective it doesn't make sense and I have no earthly idea of how it could make good business sense. I do know for a fact that store employees do not have the ability to override the system to allow you upgrade early. Again, one would think that it's all the same system so if they can do it over the phone why not in store? I don't know. My one question is, are you sure that the phone employee was offering a 2 year contract and not an Edge agreement? They are 2 completely different options and the chance is that the phone employee was maybe not giving you all of the information. I would call them back and ask them which option was being offered to be clear. I understand that you don't want to wait for shipping as I wouldn't but unfortunately when telephone support offers something that's the only way to acquire the new device.

On 9/29 I ordered an iPhone 6 Plus 128GB as an edge up from my 5S, swiped my card at the store to pay the Edge Up fee, and was told 10/31 was the expected ship date.
Didn't see the order on my My Verizon account, spoke with 3 representatives on the phone to actually get the order number so I could track it.
On 10/24 the ship date disappeared and I called to find out there was an issue with the payment. I gave them my debit card number over the phone for the Edge Up amount, and they charged me full retail -- OVER $1,000.
They promised it wouldn't post to my account and it wouldn't ship after cancelling the order. Next day it shipped. I called FedEx and refused the package over the phone.
I called when the payment posted the next day, totally wiping out my bank account and charging me overdraft fees.
They said they'd push for a refund immediately -- on Sunday, 10/24. It's now 10/30, I see no refund, I have no phone, and I have over $100 in bank fees from their mistake.
I spoke with a supervisor on the phone and they said they could refund the bank fees, but would do nothing for the fact that they screwed up my order, and told me it would be another 2-3 weeks before they actually ship a phone to me if I ordered today.
Sorry, but that's NOT good customer service. I can buy out my Edge agreement, sell the phone on eBay, and go to another carrier pretty easily. I don't want to leave Verizon's service, but I don't really see how they value me as a customer?
Does anyone else have some idea of what I could do about this whole thing??
TL;DR -- Verizon charged full retail for a phone instead of Edge Up fee, still no refund, no compensation for the inconvenience and stress they caused, and another 2-3 week wait on a phone I ordered a month ago.That situation went from inconvenient to complicated quickly. Wait for any pending orders to drop off, wait for things to clear up, wait till your upgrade comes up and then upgrade when your contract is fulfilled. I would have suggested a replacement phone, I know, with only a month left why couldn't you just upgrade early, but these situations where people try to upgrade early always end horribly and once a phone order starts, it almost cannot finish until something winds up shipped received and returned. Sorry this happened the way it did. Definitely not efficient.

HT5312 How can I get an activation locked phone to its original owner?
I recently purchased an iPhone 5 on eBay that was locked with the apple logo on it (As told by the seller who said he purchased it from someone else. So I had expectations of a possible Activation lock on the phone). When I reset the phone, I found out that it was indeed Activation locked. I have sent the seller a reply asking him to see if he can get his customer to unlock the phone (doubtful. It was probably stolen). So my question is: What is the purpose of activation lock if someone can not retrieve their old phone and their is no way to "indirectly" get in contact with the old owner through Apple to say, " Hey, I got your stolen or lost phone." It seems more like a way to just say, "Huh, you got my phone, butnice try sucker." Chances are that eventually an honest person might come across the phone and try to return it instead of being stuck with an expensive paper weight. I did try to get a hold of someone at Apple to ask this question but I guess the line got dropped when I did not have $20. I have left the phone on in the remote chance that they might try to locate it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have the overall idea of what is behind the Activation Lock. It is there primarily to deter thieves from seeing iPhones as an attractive target. If they can't use the device, it is pretty much not worth stealing it.
People who have Find My iPhone activated do have the ability to see their phone if it comes back online. They also have the abiity to erase the device or to put a lock on it with a message. So keeping it on may be helpful for the owner. Hopefully they will put a message on it so you can contact them.
Also, you can turn it into the Police if they will take it. Oftentimes people go there to see if they can retrieve their merchandise.
You really should return it to the Seller for a refund. Where it came from or who the previous owner is should not be your issue. Remember, eBay has Buyer Protection with a money back guarantee, so if the device is unusable becuase the seller did not ensure that it was, you should be able to get your money back through eBay if the Seller isn't cooperating:

Sorry you got stuck with a brick. But, again, the Activation Lock is there for the owner's protection. I would love to know the statistics for the theft rate of iPhones after the implementation of Activation Lock....
