Getting Back to SQL DBA

Hello, I worked with SQL 7 and SQL 2000 many years ago (I also worked some with Oracle). About 14 years ago I got involved with AIX and then SAN administration. I've been
completely disconnected with SQL Server and Microsoft technologies during that time. I'm now considering getting back into the DBA environment as it seems like there are just more opportunities.
I'm looking for the best way to get retrained. I'm guessing there are SQL DBA certifications similar to the old MCSE. Which certifications should I be looking at? Where is the best place to get the required training (maybe in class room, or web based or even
a great book or set of books)? Should I start my focus on SQL2008 or 2012 or 2014?
Since I have been working more with mainframes and UNIX servers I want to create a simple Windows Server environment at home. Any suggestions? Can I just buy some cheap server and then install Windows server (I don't even know what version) along with SQL.
Is there a way for me to get affordable window server and SQL CDs to install my little lab environment? Does it make sense to get 2 servers so that I can get familiar with Windows/SQL clustering.
Any of your thoughts or suggestions would be extremely helpful.

Welcome back to SQL Server Land! :-)
There are more than one question here! So, I start with the SQL Server certifications.
Please first download this poster: Microsoft IT Academy Certification roadmap poster
Then take a look at this link: Certification
then, please see this one: Microsoft SQL Server certifications
About the version to focus, the latest version is SQL Server 2014, but you can start with 2012 or 2014 both are close.
About the affordable SQL Server, you can choose between two follow options:
1. SQL Server Evaluation (180 days)
2. SQL Server Developer Edition

  • DPM2010: lost a VM, how to get back SQL data?

    I had a virtual machine with a SQL database that was getting backed up by DPM.  The VM has been destroyed and I would like to restore the SQL database to another system (I can create a new VM for the original system if necessary).  When I go to
    Recovery and navigate to the original server and database, as soon as I select the database the Recoverable Data tree collapses and takes me back to the root.
    How can I recover/restore the database for this lost system?

    if you  mount the VHD file, can you see the MDF and LDF files ? if Yes how about copy these files and attache them in SQL server

  • SQL DBA renamed the Search databases, and now search isnt working

    Our SQL DBA, saw the GUIDs and decided to rename the databases, didnt bother to tell anyone that they did it, now search is not working at all.
    Should we reconfigure a new search of try to figure out how to put SharePoint search to the renamed DATABASES?
    I also have found that the prior names of the Databases what they were with the GUIDs and was thinking of telling the DBA to rename them back, would this causes an issues... and this is in PRODUCTION SharePoint...

    You can get the "old" names via Get-SPDatabase. Rename the databases within SQL until you have a chance to follow the proper procedure. The proper procedure is outlined here:

  • Differences between being an Oracle and SQL DBA?

    Sorry to post this here, but I need so insight and don't know any Oracle DBA's. As posted here before, Ive been a MSSQL DBA for about 6 years and want to broaden my skill set. One of my ideas is to learn Oracle. For the record, I do realize that my teaching myself wont open up hundreds or Oracle DBA jobs, but Im hoping to land a "mostly SQL with a little Oracle" gig somewhere. Ive successfully installed Oracle on Linux, and now need to make a decision on if to proceed or not. Any insights from people that have worked with both platforms would be especially helpful, but all thoughts are definately welcomed. So now my questions:
    1. Why are Oracle DBA's paid more than SQL DBA's? It must be something skill specific? What is it?
    2. Will this trend likely continue as newer versions of Oracle are released that are easier to manage?
    3. With that extra cash, is there typically more hours involved? I dont mind working a bit extra if needed, but I do have little ones that I'd like to watch grow up.
    4. Are there typically differences in the job responsibilities between Oracle and SQL DBA's? The changing trend these days is to include DTS/ Analysis Services/ Reporting Services all under the DBA umbrella. Do Oracle DBA's typically have the same type of stuff?
    5. If I do continue down this path, it would probably be far easier for me to learn on Windows than *nix. Is this a valid thing to do, or should I not bother? I've been told that it's still worth while, but have real reservations about needing to tell an interviewer "I've only used it on Windows".
    I realize this is all subject to personal experiences and feelings, but don't know how else to figure this stuff out without asking.
    TIA, ChrisR

    By SQL DBA, I assume you mean SQL Server DBA. SQL is 'Structure Query Language' and is not a specific product, no matter how much the Microsoft community might wish to usurp the term. <g>
    There are mauy reasons for this, including the Oracle vs Microsoft mindset that has been nurtured over the years. For many managers, 'Oracle is solid, reliable and expensive' whereas 'Microsoft SQL Server is cheap, not necessarily as reliable, but good enough'.
    Whether true or not is irrelevant, these are direct quotes from some of my customers.
    My remaining answers are based on my personal experience, and may only be valid in my area. (Yes, things are VERY regional.)
    >
    1. Why are Oracle DBA's paid more than SQL DBA's? It
    must be something skill specific? What is it? Often, an Oracle DBA is a trained DBA. SQL Server DBAs seem to be decent developers who are [or have been stuck] doing DBA work.
    I find that SQL Server DBAs who are truly capable of handling all of {backup, recovery, troubleshooting, security, development, disaster recovery, audit, locking, configuration, RAID and disk, upgrade, migration and porting (to name a few)} competently are generally paid comparable to Oracle DBAs.
    However, I also find there are extremely few true SQL Server DBAs.
    >
    2. Will this trend likely continue as newer versions
    of Oracle are released that are easier to manage?Yes.
    Although Oracle administration is easier, DBAs are now expected to handle more instances, and adminstrator across more servers, and are expected to be competent in more of the feature capabilities.
    There is NO reduction in the amount of work. The 'easier to manage' stuff simply means being more efficient.
    >
    3. With that extra cash, is there typically more
    hours involved? I dont mind working a bit extra if
    needed, but I do have little ones that I'd like to
    watch grow up.
    A blatant observation: Oracle tends to be used in more mission critical environments, and SQL Server in department support environments. Mission critical tends to be watched closer, and require 'fast aqnd competent' response. Pager duty seems to be more prevelant in Oracle positions - department server crashes can be handled by a reboot in the morning.
    4. Are there typically differences in the job
    responsibilities between Oracle and SQL DBA's? The
    changing trend these days is to include DTS/ Analysis
    Services/ Reporting Services all under the DBA
    umbrella. Do Oracle DBA's typically have the same
    type of stuff?Many SQL Server 'DBAs' I know personally are 'super developers' but not really DBAs.
    Observation: DBAs are often very 'repeatable' detail oriented, whereas developers are 'get it done' oriented. Very different mentailties, both very important.
    >
    5. If I do continue down this path, it would probably
    be far easier for me to learn on Windows than *nix.
    Is this a valid thing to do, or should I not bother?
    I've been told that it's still worth while, but have
    real reservations about needing to tell an
    interviewer "I've only used it on Windows". Oracle is quite operating system independant. Pick your poison.
    SQL Server is quite operating system dependant. Some else picks your poison.
    There is no shame in saying to an interviewer that you have a strong competence in Oracle but only experience in Windows. A good potential employer will often provide appropriate additional training to a suitable, honest, candidate.
    >
    I realize this is all subject to personal experiences
    and feelings, but don't know how else to figure this
    stuff out without asking.
    I strongly encourage you to contact locals rather than ask in these forums. Check whether there is an Oracle User Group close to you, and meet and chat with the members. Ditto for SQL Server. (You can find out by contacting respective sales reps.)
    The above is NOT a dismissal of SQL Server capabiltites or SQL Server DBAs. (Some close friends are extremely competent with SQL Server.) It is just a set of personal observations.

  • How to call plsql procedure or function and getting back the string?

    Hi Everyone,
    i am using Jdev 11.1.1.5.0.
    i have a requirement to call plsql procedure or function from my backing bean java file and get back the returned value from the procedure or function.
    what piece of simple code i need to write in my backing bean?
    please suggest.
    Thanks.

    As always you write the method to call he pl/sql in the application module, expose this method to the client (so you see it in the datacontroll) then create a operation binding to the method and call this operation from the bean. The result you get by operation.getResult();
    You should never call pl/sql from the bean directly!
    The doc shows how to call the procedure from an application module: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21764_01/web.1111/b31974/bcadvgen.htm#sm0297

  • Get back the data in R/3 If R/3 fails

    Hi All,
          If our R/3 system were to fail, and we had to bring it back from a backup that would be dated behind the current status of the CRM due to MW flowing, what would we need to do for R/3 to “get back” orders/customers that existed in CRM but not in the recovered R/3 database?
    Plz give me reply as early as possible
    Thanks,
    Saritha

    Dear Saritha,
    I'm not sure if this forum is the right place to get a qualified answer to your question. This discussion group deals with Discovery System specific topics -> there is no CRM installed on the Discovery System.
    My take on your question: You have to ensure during the time of the backup that you have a backup that covers R/3 and CRM "in sync".
    You might want to re-post the question in one of the "SAP Solutions" discussion groups.

  • How can I get back into my application aftermath invoking Start up page of index.htm ?

    Gorgeous Hello All,
    If anyone of you can please provide me a solution for the following, will help me in plentious and galore.
    Am using Adobe RoboHelp, Version 10 and IE version being 10.
    A hurdle :-
    I have a application which has been developed in ASP .NET, Version 4.0. Help link has been created in this application wherein here the Start up page of index.htm has been linked to be read from the RoboHelp local project folder\!SSL!\Multiscreen_HTML5\desktop. All are working absolutely fine except when
    I login into the above-said application -> click on the Help page -> the index.htm opens with Contents, Index, Glossary -> Am able to successfully perform any task by respective clickings
    -> But I am not able to get back into my application when I click on the IE provided Back button (Alt+Left) -> Any amount of invoking Back button makes the system getting looped into this Start up page of index.htm only -> When I Close Tab (Ctrl + W) or Close ( X ) -> The window session gets closed and I have to repeat all by relogin once again.
    How can I get back into my application aftermath invoking Start up page of index.htm ?
    (I can always get back into the application easily by erasing those parts in the url which refers to this RoboHelp linkages – but this certainly looks non-polished work)
    Help Please

    (But Jeff : When I used Microsoft HTML Help as primary layout to generate chm file , My Help when launched from my Application opened in a new browser window and when I closed this Help browser window did not close my application. Looks like need to write few liner code to get this issue settled )

  • How to get back fields from INSERT statement in batch mode(getGeneratedKeys

    Hi,
    I wanted to insert records to database and get back some fields.
    I create prepared statement:
    preparedStatement = connection.prepareStatement(sqlQuery, columnIndexes);
    then I set parameters.
    Following code works properly:
    preparedStatement.executeUpdate();
    generatedKeys = preparedStatement.getGeneratedKeys();
    if (generatedKeys.next()) {
    doSomething();
    But when I try to do this by batch I get exception:

    My "batch" code:

    setParameters(preparedStatement);
    preparedStatement.addBatch();
    preparedStatement.executeBatch();
    Isn't it a bug?
    Can I get back fields (eg. from last insert added to batch)?
    I hope somebody can help me.

    This code works for me but only inserting one row. More than one causes an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException once sendBatch is called.

  • I had to manually download the new version of itunes.. via tools, it gave me 4 items to download and i did not download all 4 compenants.  Does anyone know how to get back to the pop up that contains tools so i can redownlaod all of them.

    I lost my old iphone and have a new 5s.. i need to sync to itunes.  i had to donwload manually via tools but i didnt download all four files.  now when i plug my phone into itunes it says there is an error bc i didnt download all the files.  so when i go into itunes now and check for updates it says its up to date.  the problem is with the phone support file i didnt download.
    Does anyone know how to get back to the pop up that has the music player update and itunes update bc this is the only place i have seen "tools" to be able to manually update all four files....
    ***IF i completely uninstall itunes and reinstall will it still have all my songs, photos, apps etc... bc i need to sync my new phone to get all my stuff back

    this is a follow up from the profane post earlier....
    i have done this twice in two other posts..
    here is my problem.. i started off trying to update itunes, it failed twice and said i needed to install manually via tools.
    the only place to get to tools is the pop up box that appears when you click check for updates.. if there is an available update then the pop up shows up with the quick time and itunes files to download. so i finally figured that out. i clicked on tools and manual update, four files were saved to a file. Apple mobile device support, another one similar, itunes, and another one i cant remember. I only downloaded the itunes file seeing as though thats all i needed to accomplish in the first place.
    so then i restarted my computer bc you need to reboot and then reopen itunes for update to take effect. once i have itunes back open i plugged in my new 5s which i am trying to sync to my computer to get all my stuff back bc i lost my previous phone over the weekend.. once i plugged the phone in an error stating i needed to unistall the apple mobile device support and itunes and then reinstall. well i dont know where those files were originally stored on my computer AND since my itunes was updated, just not the other 3 associated files, when i click check for updates it says its up to date and then pop up containing the quick time and itunes does not pop up thus i cant get back to the tools tab to manually save the 4 files again.
    so i was just going to uninstall itunes all together and then i thought well what happens if it erases all my photos apps songs etc... which would defeat the whole purpose in the first place of me trying to sync my new phone to get all my stuff back.
    so i literally have no idea what to do at this point.. if you have read this you are probably just as confused as me...

    Find My iPhone is good for misplaced iPhone but not good for thief and it was never meant to be.
    You chance of getting it back is very small.
    There are a few things you can try.
    Try remote lock/wipe your iPhone through Find My iPhone.
