Getting parent-child data into an Oracle level-based OLAP hierarchy

We have some organisational data which we need to represent in an Oracle OLAP 10g dimension, preferably populated using Warehouse Builder.
The organisational hierarchy is listed as parent-child pairs, and is both ragged (unbalanced) and skip-level (noncovering). This would lend itself to a value-based hierarchy, but our client would rather we use ROLAP rather than MOLAP, i.e. avoid the use of an Analytical Workspace, which rules out the use of a value-based hierarchy.
Is there a straightforward way to populate a level-based hierarchy using parent-child pair data, and if so how can it be done?
Pointers to tutorials would be welcome, especially if they use Warehouse Builder.

These values are present in the single column itself. My need is to get the parent values for the given child value.

Different ways to download data into a Oracle database

Apart from the below are there any other ways to download data into an Oracle database ?
1. Import data using import/export features.
2. Oracle external tables.
3. Data Pump
4. SQL Loader.
5. PL/SQL => utl_file package.
6. Oracle SQL developer tool - it was a nice surprise this morning to know that this tool can be used to import data into Oracle database.

To get the table data into a file in pl/sql developer

i have table with 90k rows, i want to get the table data into a file like excel....
i executed the select statement it shows only 5k rows because of buffer problem.
can u please help me any alternative way to get the table data into a file.

Depending on your database version ( the result of: select * from v$version; ) you might have some other options.

How to read RMAN data into an ORACLE Table?

With regards to RMAN, how should we store the data into a database table, from the commands which can run only on RMAN prompt without using Recovery Catalog?
For Example:

Actually, I am not using Recovery Catalog, so the views like RC_database, Rc_tablespaces etc , which are specific to recovery catalog are not available.
r.- this make sense at 100% because those views belong to the recovery catalog.
So, I wanted that these information, which we can get via using the commands like above, transfer into an Oracle table
r.- If you want to access the views of the Recovery Catalog to store part of that information in tables you have to have the database registered in a Recovery Catalog.
Should we keep the Recovery Catalog in Control file? Instead of using separate Schema.
r.- I recommend you to create a catalog for your database because the space the controlfile to store information regarding RMAN is reused and you can lose important information about your backups.
Can we run Catrman.sql script as a sys in order to keep the recovery catalog in sys schema?
r.- As you know, this is not recommended at all.
Conclusion : Create a Recovery Catalog and you will be able to perform all that you want regardind what you mentioned above.

What is the best way to put LabVIEW DSC data into an Oracle database?

I have been collecting data using LabVIEW DSC 7.0 for several years and have always accessed the data from the Citadel database via the Historical Data Viewer. I would now like to begin putting this data into an Oracle database. My company stores all their data in Oracle and it would provide me all the benefits of their existing infrastructure such as automated backups, data mining tools, etc.
My initial thought is to use "Read Trace.vi" in LabVIEW to pull historical data from the citadel database at regular intervals (e.g. 1 minute) and insert this data into Oracle via ODBC. In this way, I do not need to track the value changes in order to know when to write to Oracle. I also considered replicating the citadel database using some other method, but I recall that the tables used by citadel are somewhat complicated. I only need a simple table with columns for channel, timestamp, and data. The "Read Trace.vi" will provide me data in this format.
I do not need to update the Oracle database in real time, a few minute delay is acceptable. If anyone has a better idea or additional insight please let me know. Thanks.

In terms of connectivity, you want to use ADO, not ODBC. Beyond that, it all depends on the structure of the data and what you are going to want to do with it. This is a very big question that you need to be getting some in-depth assistance.

Writing a stored procedure to import SQL Server table data into a Oracle table

Hello,
As a new DBA I have been tasked with writing a stored procedure to import SQL Server table data into an Oracle table. I have been given many suggestions on how to do it from SQL Server but I I just need to write a stored procedure to run it from the Oracle side. Suggestions/guidance on where to start would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

CREATE TABLE statements would have been better as MS-SQL and Oracle don't have the same data types.
OUR_DATE, OUR_TIME will (most likely) be ONE column in Oracle.

Personally, I'd just load the data over a database link:
insert into oracle_destination_table_name ( <column list> )
select ... <transform data here>
from data_source_table@mssql_db_link
As far as creating the database link from Oracle to MS-SQL ... that is for somebody else to answer.
(most likely you'll need to use an ODBC driver)

Cannot get the correct data type in Oracle JDBC

Dear ALL:
I used JDBC ResultSetMetaData to get the column data type for Oracle Database. I created a table including 2 columns AAA, which is NUMBER type, BBB which is FLOAT type.
However, I found a problem that either NUMBER or FLOAT data types are reported as NUMBER type in JDBC.
IN SQL 2000, it is okay. SMALLINT, INT, TINYINT, etc..can be reported correctly.
Can anybody tell me that what's wrong here? I will be very appreciated.

Naveen,
    Are yo having issue when you save something in the layout, the data doesn't appear in the listcube ? Or do you have issue that the latest data you see in the cube doesn't appear in the layout ?
For the former issue, please look at your selections of listcube and for the second issue, please check your planning level definition, make sure all the restrictions you have applied are valid for this latest data to be presented in the layout.

Parent Child Data - Populate within a Dropdown

I have a mysql database with the following fields
ID (Int) - Title (VarChar) - ParentID (Int)
This table is used to display categories with it's parent. Categories with the ParentID of 0 means that it is a root category.
What'm trying to do is query the database and populate all values (with it's parent & child(s)) within a regular html dropdown box.
So the output of the dropdown whould look like:

As far as I know you cannot elegantly handle this sort of datastructure in MySQL (this is based on 5min of googling). If you had Oracle you could use CONNECT BY PRIOR, and with SQL Server one can use Common Table Expressions to effect much the same thing (except in a pretty clunky fashion, IMO).
As far as I can tell, MySQL has neither of those options. You'll need to do some sort of horrific recursive proc, or something like that. Although I saw references to MySQL not even being able to do that (I didn't check how contemporary those comments were).
If you can possibly ditch that way of modelling your data - it really doesn't scale so well - have a look at nested set hierarchies:

The only modification I make to that is to store the parent with each node too, which makes sibling operations much easier. Nested sets work really well with hierarchical look-ups though.

CLOB is a datatype for storing large character based objects. A file is something on the operating system's filesystem.
So, why have you stored comma seperated data in a CLOB?
Where did this data come from? If it came from a file, why didn't you use SQL*Loader or, even better, External Tables to read and parse the data into structured format when populating the database with it?
If you really do have to parse a CLOB of data to pull out the comma seperated values, then you're going to have to write something yourself to do that, reading "lines" by looking for the newline character(s), and then breaking up the "lines" into the component data by looking for commas within it, using normal string functions such as INSTR and SUBSTR or, if necessary, REGEXP_INSTR and REGEXP_SUBSTR. If you have string data that contains commas but uses double quotes around the string, then you'll also have the added complexity of ignoring commas within such string data.
Like I say... it's much easier with SQL*Loader of External Tables as these are designed to parse such CSV type data.

I followed your suggested in the above, and always purge recyclebin, but still got the same problem. because in 10gr2, there's no dbms_xmlschema.purge_schema available,

With the following xml file, how can I use xslt by Java to get any <data> child element's string content. For example, to get "ee ff gg hh" in <Data name="inputs2">ee ff gg hh</Data> [this is in <Info Date="03-05-2003"> branch]?
I want to get it in a quick way, so I do not want to get it by DOM. The question is what is the best way to get it in Java? Is it possible by SAX combined with XSLT (XPATH) - with Java Code?

The problem is my file could be very large in size,
and if "load the whole thing into memory", it will
throw out of memory exception. So the best thing would
be dynamically load it if possible.
SAX and XSLT actually can do some help, since whenever
it finds my requested node, it can stop processing -
but the problem here is: it has to reparse the XML
file from the beginning every time to find the
requested node - a very time-consuming job...
Any better solution?how about using sax to parse the file, and temporarily insert the records into a DB? You could then use SQL to do your queries.
parsing/inserting might take awhile; but a properly tuned DB (and the java.sql.statement.addBatch()) will minimize this - probably down to the order of a DOM parse.
Other solutions:
- regex and perl/python on the XML file
- splitting the big XML file into little XML files (one file per <Inputs> tag maybe?) and dealing with an individual node at a time
- parsing the file as SAX and caching the info you need (i.e. parse it once and cache the values); then look them up afterwards
