Ghost clips appearing on FCP timeline-why?

every now and again in this edit, I'll drop a clip (say clip #1) on to the timeline, do a render at some point in the future, and then later move/delete clip #1.
Afterwards, when I play timeline on the canvas, the clip I deleted will show up again, overriding clips #3,4,5 that are ACTUALLY there. There are 4 active track on this edit (V1-4), and one that is disabled (V5). So there appears to be no clips other than #3,4,and 5. [I hope that's clear!]
When the ghost image plays, I can see all 5 tracks of video, and all audio tracks as well.
Sequence info: 5V, 10A, 29.97 fps, 720x480, comp=DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, CCIR 601, field dom=lower (even), TC=source, TC rate=30.
This has happened 2 or three different times in this (large) edit. I just need to know why it's happening and how I can change things so it doesn't happen again!
Cheers,
chris

Sometimes FCP gets stuck on old render files, why, who knows. You can do any number of things to force a re-render of that clip or section of the timeline (lower then riase opacity, toggle the track off and on etc.) Or you may have to delete the render files using the Render Manager.

  • Insert Editing, Why Won't Clips Appear In The Timeline?

Every time I attempt an insert edit, either via the "downward arrow" symbol or via "W" on the keyboard the clip appears in a secondary time/storyline below the Timeline, with a blank space in the main Timeline of exactly the same duration as the clip.
Similarly if I drag a clip from one part of the Timeline to another the clip appears below the Timeline with a corresponding blank space.
I do not want a secondary, or indeed tertiary storyline, I want all my clips to appear on the Timeline. I am not bothered about the length of the project or if I alter the length during the editing process.
    Suggestions will be appreciated,
    Ron

Couldn't manage that Tom, my hands aren't big enough BUT I have since discovered that what I thought was the Timeline is in fact a secondary storyline, with the Timeline, dark grey, below it. If I insert edit the clip appears correctly on on the Timeline with the two adjacent clips above on the Secondary line.
I have no idea how this happened. I started off my edit by by using the "append" arrow but the clips appeared and lined up together on this Secondary storyline.
A very laborious task in dragging each clip off the Second line and onto the Timeline. Nearly an hours worth of short clips!
I am about to start another project so will want to be certain to get all onto the Timeline. Perhaps my settings were wrong or I've inadvertently pressed the wrong key.  Ron

  • Ghost clip appears in canvas only when other clips are placed in its place

Gd afternoon, this may sound crazy but here we go. the space on the timeline is blank, and when the sequence is played the blank section shows nothing but black screen. however when i drop any clip in the empty space on the timeline an old clip I changed the speed of shows over whatever clip i just dropped in the empty spot. Again, when the spot is empty nothing shows, only when a different clip is placed in that spot does the "ghost" clip appear over the new clip and the space that the ghost clip holds shows a blue rendered line for the speed that was changed.
How do I get rid of this ghost clip?

+thanks, i tried to delete the rendered clip but no help+
No, what is required when the problem reaches the stage you described is to delete ALL of the render files for that sequence. One way to do that is to go to Tools > Render Manager and navigate to the problem sequence and clicking in the Remove column for that sequence. Then click OK.
That will delete all of the render files for the sequence. Then you re-render. This sometimes works, as I said.

  • New Clips Appear in Color Timeline

I have prepped my timeline by removing all filters, speed changes, etc... I reduced the clips to three video tracks. I couldn't put everything in one video track, because of overlapping dissolves.
So I send from FCP7 to Color 1.5 and when I open my timeline, I see all my shots on V1 and randomly on V2 is a clip that isn't there in FCP. So I have to unlock the track and delete it. Then I go forward in the timeline and this same clip reappears on V2. Also, after my last shot are 6 more shots in V1 that don't appear in FCP. They just randomly pop up there in Color.
This application has been pretty chaotic and I've seen this before. But now I feel it's getting out of hand. Is there anything I can do to avoid this? I recently just trashed as my prefs and that didn't fix anything.
I concerned that some shots in the Color timeline might not be the same exact ones in FCP's timeline.

I have a big problem. When I send from FCP to Color does not recognize the mounting clips. In each plane is everything and not the s 2 or 4 seconds it had in the assembly of the FCP.
I have worked with Color more times and have not had that problem.
Anyone can help me?. Can it be the codecs, the times of the FCP, the settings of COLOR?
Could you help me, please ?

  • Db indication no longer appears in fcp timeline

When editing audio levels in the timeline, a db level indicator would pop up when adding and adjusting audio keyframes.  Now the indicators don't show up.  I've gone through seemingly all of the settings/preferences but have not been able to get them back.  Help

Thanks.  I had tried trashing FCP prefs as a part of my efforts to fix this.  But thanks for the reminder on that prefs manager.  I used it a few years ago, but lost track of it.
I have the info appearing again now.  I had about 30 timelines open and wondered if I might be somehow overloading the software.  After closing the timelines and restaring... all is finally happy again.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Need help with non-video clip transitions on the FCP timeline...

Hi all, I am struggling with this problem with the FCP timeline: I have a mix of things; .motn includes, .psd includes, etc. and I want to put a transition between them and a normal video clip, BUT, as u can guess, it does not work well. I guess because FCP can't see the frames inside the Motion file, it won't let u do a cross fade or whatever with any amount of time applied to it. So what to do?
I started to modify the motion files but realized this would not work, as I often use bits of one motion animation in various places starting and ending at different timecodes. So i need to be able to place a transition at the beg/end of motion clip on the fcp timeline. I started doing this:
    1) place a slug above the track of a joining of motion/video clip
    2) place the transitions on both ends of the slug.
Is this the way to go? I have dozens of these that I need to fix asap, so all advice is appreciated!

    Hi Cooco,
there are several ways to find out whether it is a [*matter of handles*|http://www.larryjordan.biz/articles/lj_handles.html]
One is to select the clip>hit the S key (slip tool) clickandhold it . A brown line drawing a rectangle will appear and will continue beyond in and out point revealing the available clip's handles. If not handles are available then the brown line will stay within the clip on the timeline.
Visit the link I sent to you to more understand handle matters.

  • FCP timeline to Motion 3  "send to" clip length problem

I am having a problem with Motion 3 when I send a selected clip from an FCP timeline to a Motion Project (for some optical flow treatment)
It processes the entire source file associated with the clip- even if I have used a subclip to edit into the sequence in the first place- my source files are long so it takes several hours for a section only lasting a few seconds.
Is there a simple solution to this?
    Thanks,
    Andrew Parker

    Thanks for these replies.
A bizarre design- making a nonsense of the integration from FCP sequence clip to Motion 3 for this treatment.
I'm hesitant to go to Motion 4 half way through a project- especially as there seem to be other teething problems from what I can gather on this forum.
I guess I could also re-ingest at short length those clips that I want to treat with optical flow blending- making it only a last stage process for all practical purposes.

  • Pixelated Font out of After Effects and in the FCP timeline

I've posted this questions before, but I'm still having trouble.  I create an animation is After Effects that is composed of a layer Photoshop file.  Looks fine in AE and when I play the exported movie on my desktop. See below.
I put it on the timeline in Final Cut and Voila! this:
The font pixelates.  In addition, I'm getting pixelated font in my layered photoshop files in my timeline.  This is an issue I cannot recall having in the past.
I was advised on my last post for this issue not to use the DV-NTSC codec to export from After Effect but no matter what I use I get the pixelation once I put it in the Final Cut timeline.  So is is possible that the issue lies with something in my layered Photoshop file?  This is ultimately going to play on a 12 foot high screen so there no hiding even a minor lack of quality.  Help!
My After Effects is version 6.0
Thanks for anything you can do!

What are the properties of the clip from Ae?
These are my export choices and I've tried DV-NTSC which matches the final cut settings and under advice from this forum the Uncompressed 10-bit and H.264.  Same pixelated font but only in the FCP timelime.  Plays fine in Quicktime on the deskstop with no pixelation on the font
What are your Sequence settings in FCP?
    DV-NTSC
Did you render the clip on the FCP Timeline?
    Yes, didn't make a difference
The Final Cut Pro canvas shows you a low res proxy. That conserves resources and should not be what you use to determine quality. Export the clip and view it in QuickTime Player 7--Play beautifully....no crappy font.
(not QT X). Make sure QT7 is set to use Hi Quality Playback (in the Preferences dialog). Better yet, view it on a TV set.
Views on the TV as pixelated.
The typeface that you are using. While elegant and pretty, it is very unsuitable for television--Yes, absolutely agree, but it's a client produced photoshop file that matches the invitations for the Gala.  They may allow me to change the font to something close, but even those fonts would probably create the same problem.
Considering using text font in Final Cut to solve the issue, but I just don't want to "say Uncle" just yet.  I would like to figure out the problem.  I feel like I exist in a constant learning curve...just commentary of life in today's world there.
Once again, any suggestions would be appreciated.  Plus I don't understand why my photoshop files look terrible in the timeline as well.  I just haven't had that problem before.

  • Single clip repeated 4 times in FCP timeline. SP 2 issue

    Hi all,
Single clip repeated 4 times in FCP timeline, when I apply an effect to clip for in SP2 its applying it to all three clips? Why?

That's the way it works. You have 4 instances of one thing, you change one you change them all.
What you want to do is first Clip>Replace with Independent Audio File Project (this creates a new copy of that one instance).
Then when you effect that clip it is not affecting the other 3 files, just the new one you've created.
I suppose one could argue that the program should do that for you, after all some other program I use works that way - it creates a new file while not affecting the others (actually it gives you the option of both methods). Feel free to file a feedback request.

  • Format mismatches: 1080pA clips into FCP timeline

For my HVX, in FCP, I'm using the suggested preset for 1080 24pA which cites a compressor setting of DVCPRO HD 1080p30. When I try to drag the clip into the timeline it says there is a mismatch--that the clip does not match the preset and I have the option to change the sequence setting to match the clip settings or not. FCP advises that one change the sequence to match the clip property, and so if I opt to change that sequence setting, when I look at the sequence specs the one thing that has changed is that now the sequence setting is DVCPRO HD 1080i60.  That is, it appears from this that despite having checked the box in Raylight to remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown, this has failed and clip is still interlaced over 60. And indeed when one looks at the clip properties the clip is identified as DVCPRO HD 1080i60.
What am I doing wrong and what do I do to get the pulldown properly removed and make my 1080pA shot footage progressive?  Or is there something fundamental I'm not correctly understanding?

    Hi Shane,
    Thanks for your reply.
I'm not disputing your suggested approach as I believe it is generally the tried and true one.
To be clear, I have done that as well (making sure the remove pulldown box is checked in the L&T interface) and from what I can tell yielded the exactly the same results… same clip properties vs.  sequence properties.
Either way I use the FCP easy setup to create the sequence format it recommends for 24pA footage which in the FCP browser shows among a long list of properties the following key ones  a video rate of 23.98 fps (ii) compressor setting of DVCPRO HD 1080p 30 and  Pixel Aspect of HD 1280x1080.
Whether I use L&T or Raylight, I get a clip with the same properties except the compressor setting being DVCPRO HD 1080i60. I assume that FCP identifies the mismatch because of the difference of that parameter.
Either way I have the same problem.
BTW, the latest version of Raylight claims to remove pulldown. In that pa's General Options the top section is dedicated to pulldown removal. One can set the target frame rate (23.976 in my case) and check the box of the removal. You can see a screen grab of the General Options on their web site (http://dvfilm.com/raylight/mac/index.htm).
    From their Support Doc:
    Pulldown Options
24PA pulldown, also known as 2:3:3:2 or "Advanced Pulldown", can be removed from 1080i/60 and 480i/60 (NTSC DV, DVCPRO, DVCPRO50) clips, if the "Remove Pulldown" option is selected. You can also use this option to remove 3:2 or 2:2 pulldown from footage recorded at 60P, or 2:2 pulldown from 50P. Be sure to set the Target Frame Rate in the drop-down selector box to 23.976, 29.97, or 25 fps as appropriate.
To answer your question, I can only hypothesize that when a file is processed through Raylight incuding the Pulldown removal instruction, the reulting Raylight .MOV file includes instructions to quicktime/FCP to remove the extra frames when the MXF file is played through it.
Possibly this feature does not work correctly however? I guess next I need to contact Raylight.
BTW to round out the picture for you:
My workflow into FCP 7/Studio 3:
    1. HPX170.. shooting 1080 24pA.
    2. Ingest files from P2 cards via P2 Card reader onto external drives using MacPro (OS10.6.8) workstation using Panasonic's P2CMS
    3. To avoid Log & Transfer and the creation of redundant massive scratch data, I apply Raylight v3 to:
    (a) re-wrap .MXFs into .MOV alias pointing to the original MXFs in sub-folder "Contents" and
    (b) remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown
    4. Import the .MOV alias files into a Clip Bin in FCP
    5. Use the FCP easy setup to create the recommended sequence for 24pA footage which in the FCP browser cites properties for that sequence as having  a video rate of 23.98 fps (ii) compressor setting of DVCPRO HD 1080p 30 and  Pixel Aspect of HD 1280x1080,
    6. I attempt to drag the clips into that sequence which is where i hit the mismatch.
Some key anecdotal observations for which I'm uncertain of the significance:
    1. I cannot perceive much difference in how the footage plays whether I convert the sequence to match the clip as per the above workflow (as FCP recommends) or conversely elect to force the clip into the FCP recommended sequence for 24pA footage
    2. footage viewed in the P2CMS Previewer (prior to pulldown removal) does appear to my realtively untrained eye as more interlaced (though not terribly so) than that viewed in FCP in either case immediately above
    3. Though the image of the 1080 footage is larger, that 1080 footage does not look as clean 720 pN (24p) footage shot with that same camera.
In the end I'm not sure if I have a misunderstanding, doing something wrong or whether everything is OK and as good as it gets considering what to me appears to be a degradation of the 1080 image in comparison with the 720 image.
    Any more thoughts?

  • I have been using Final Cut pro v6 without any problems but recently had to reinstall.  Since then I can't open and view all my Quicktime clips.  They appear white in timeline which means you can hear audio but not view picture.  Any tips?

I have been using Final Cut Pro without any problems - v6 - for ages.  I recently had a hardware issue and had to reinstall the software.  Since then I can't open most of my QT clips in my fcp project.  They appear as white clips - audio only no pictures.  There are a few QT clips you can view as regular thumbnail images and they play ok.  What's the issue?  I have fcp v6.0.6 and QT v7.  Any thoughts on what to do next?

Yes I did software updates which updated fcp to 6.0.6 and QT to version 7.7.  That's as far as updates have taken me although i have requested daily updates.  I forgot to say the clips don't play in QT view either.  Again sound but no pictures when they are played.

  • I just transferred "all movies" to "My Passport" hard drive.  Several images of the same clips appear.  Is each image a valid clip?  Why do I have so many?

I just transferred "all movies" to "My Passport" hard drive.  Several images of the same clips appear.  Is each image a valid clip?  Why do I have so many?

Okay. Trash the stuff on the External Drive.
All Movies is not a place - it's a list. Specifically its a list of all the movies on your Mac. Never interact with anything in iPhoto via these All Movies or All Images lists.
In iPhoto select the Movies you want to move and go File -> Export. Set the Kind: to Original and export from iPhoto to this external drive.
Then once you're sure the export has gone correctly, erase them from iPhoto.

  • Ghost Audio appearing in timeline

    Hey guys,
    Anyone experienced the following?
I have a timeline with compound clips in it - with audio in both the compound clips and in the timeline.
In a section where I have an interview I am also hearing audio from another place/source - from inside a compound clip that appears much later in the edit.
(The audio originates in a part of the compound clip that is not being used in the main timeline i am editing).
    It is very very strange.
I have to go and turn on and off clips in the timeline to try to find the culprate clip.
It seems like a really big bug and but very rare.
    Cheers
    Adam

Trash your project render files and see if it goes away.
What are the complete specs of your media?

I am really having a horrible time when trying to do our Church announcements in FCP X. When I try to take a clip from the event to the timeline my clips expanded and my timeline zoom level does not stay in the original place it moves to the right and is max out which makes every clip that I bring to the timeline expanded.

What format etc. are the video clips and what were they shot on?

  • Linked video audio clip goes out of sync when put in timeline - why?

Learning to use Final Cut Express. Clip plays in browser with audio in time with video but as soon as clip is dragged onto timeline the audio goes out of sync. Why? Please can anyone help because its driving me mad!

You don't give any details as to FCE's settings, camera format or your workflow so I can only hazard a guess.
One of the main reasons that audio goes out of sync is because the Easy Setup audio settings do not match the camera's audio settings.
The default setting is for 16bit (48KHz) but your camera may be shooting 12bit (32KHz audio).
If this is the case you need to recapture using the 32KHz Easy Setup.
