Gifs in jar files
I have an application that uses some gif files which are displayed using the ImageIcon object. How do i get it so that it can find the gifs within the jar file that the application is packaged in?
Greg
hi,
a jar-file is to use like a directory and with the command 'getClass().getResource()' you get the real directory to your pictures (or other ressources).
ex.
your jar-file contains the following:
/yourLib/YourClass.class
/yourLib/img/pic1.gif
then you can get the pic from your class 'YourClass.class' with the command
....setIcon(new javax.swing.ImageIcon(getClass().getResource("/yourLib/img/pic1.gif")));

Problem in bundling gifs in jar file.
Hello all,
I am having following package structure.
/* For example */
com.course.explorer;
com.course.explorer.toolbar;
and an image directory having all images in
com/course/explorer/images
Now to associate an ImageIcon with a button in toolbar package.
/* for example */
code from NewCourseBut.java present in com.course.explorer.toolbar package.
ImageIcon img = new ImageIcon(
getClass().getResource("../images/new_course.gif"));
Now my problem is when I am trying to run a jar file (containing all my code+images) it throws NullPointerException.( Unable to find the image new_course.gif)
I am not able to understand wher I am going wrong.
Can anyone please help me out in finding my fault.
Smiles,Hello All,
Is there any standard way of incorporating gifs in an Jar file.
Consider that one is extracting an ImageIcon for a Toolbar button and for the same the gifs is present in an "images" directory.
I did tried alot of permutation & combinations still no luck.
How one need to proceed for same ?
Any guidance is welcome.

I want to put all image files used one of my programs in jar file(let's say "images.jar") so how can can I get the images file if the class who needs them is not in "images.jar'
can I do like that ?
JButton b=new JButton("OK");
b.setIcon(new ImageIcon("image.jar/ok..gif"));Make sure the jar-file is in the classpath.... then ude getResource() or getResourceAsStream() to get hold of them.

Java Plugin and GIFs from Jar file...
This used to work and I haven't looked at it for a while. First thing I did is run the old java applet web page with the old jar file, kinda just to lay eyes on the thing again.
It had to download a new plug-in from Sun, and upon doing so, reports a new error indicating that the value for the cache_version attribute in the HTML is incorrect. It was 1.0 (always has been) and the plugin says it needs to be in X.X.X.X format instead.
So, that isn't a nice change to make in the plugin at this time. However, if I just click okay and close the error dialog, at least it works fine after that.
In my attempt to get rid of the dialog I change the cache version to 1.0.0.0, upon doing this
the toolbar images no longer load, it says there is a java.io.FilePermission error.
We'll it doesn't make any sense that a mere change to cache version caused that so I changed the version back to the apparently erroneous value of 1.0, and then the toolbar images work again ! But I get the permission error.
Any ideas how I can fix these pesky images loading from a jar ?
Do you have any code that loads images out of a jar in an applet succesfully ?
Or have any suggestions on what I could try ?
Below is the code I'm using to load the images, where icoXXXX is a ImageIcon object, and fileameXXXX is a string containing a relative file path such as "images/highcolor/toc_color.gif" (this code executes in the applet's init() method (called by the plugin):
java.net.URL urlToc = getClass().getResource(filenameToc);
java.net.URL urlTocBW= getClass().getResource(filenameTocBW);dunno why but
getClass().$blah... wouldn't work for getting images in an applet from a jar for me.
But this does:
Class c = Class.forName("java.lang.Object");
InputStream in = c.getResourceAsStream("/images/myImage.gif");
byte[] buffer = new byte[in.available()];
in.read(buffer);
icon = new ImageIcon(buffer);
when included with the usual default exception handling.
Lemme know if that doesn't work for you.

Gifs placed in a jar file. need help getting them.
I have placed all the gif files in a jar file.
added the gif.jar to the project in the required libraries of project properties.
In the toolbar class I gave this.
JButton btnNew = new JButton(new ImageIcon("new.gif"));
and was expecting it to show the icon but I didn't get it?
Can I place the gifs in a jar file.
What else can I change/check to see the icons?
Thanks.They are in the same path in the jar file that they were when they were on your disk in the file system. Lets say you have a dir structure
C:\dir1\dir2\dir3\dir4\file.txt
and you cd to dir2:
cd \dir1\dir2
then you jar dir3:
jar cvf jar.jar dir3/*.*
the path to file.txt would still be /dir3/dir4/file.txt inside the jar file.
do a jar tvf jarfile.jar and take a look. -
Iconic (gif) jar files
Just curious, how does forms know the name of the jar file in the codebase directory to search when loading icon (gifs). Or does it search every jar file in that directory?
thx,
r.b.> how does forms know the name of the jar file in the
codebase directory to search when loading icon (gifs).
You add the jar file to the archive_jini parameter. The gif in the jar file has a path. (If there's no path, then it's just /.) Your serverApp file (registry.dat) has the path where the icons reside.
So if your registry.dat file has, say, /myicons as the path, then your jar file, called appicons.jar contains the icons in the path /myicons.
You specify appicons.jar in the archive_jini parameter. That way it gets downloaded to the client.
Now the client has the jar, which has the icons. And client has the path. Voila!
> and what happens when it doesn't find a specific gif
in the jar file?
Don't do that. :)
Seriously, I don't know what happens. I suspect the Form runs fine but there's no image where the icon should be.
You may get an error in the java console, I'm not sure.

Thanks.Ok, lets try it this way:
I have small samples on my server, which solve your
problem. If you look at them, you can see
how it works from a working example as starting point.
CAUTION: This one ONLY works, if you have
selected a JVM 1.3x.
[ It doesnt work for jvm 1.4, because it references
the main class in unnamed space. Thanks SUN ! -
why was this needed ??? (security I guess) ]
Steps:
1) goto http://www.snowraver.org/java/index.htm
2) download the "jarcreator.jar" example
[ There is a small link "Download JarCreator.jar -
although you also can start it as WebStart application
if you click on the big button on that homepage ]
3)
The jar file contains the classes as well as the
java source files and 2 gif pictures, which are
loaded using the above explained method
"LoadImageIcon"
You can see how it works from that example.
For extracting the source files, you can rename it
and give it the ending .zip on windows, then
you can extract all files using WinZip )
The main class (called Idefix above) must be outside
any package, that is, there must not be
a package statement at the beginning.
Some notes:
If you are working without jar file, the method
can return an ImageIcon object, although it
couldnt find it. In this case, the width and length
of that ImageIcon are zero.
Usually no problem. But imagine you use the
image icon for a tiled background. You loop
would be endless then.
It's a good idea to inspect the width of an imageicon
for checking its greater zero. -
why jar file cant load the .gif file? is it need to specify the directory for the .gif file in jar? when i run my applet, that can't load the picture, what is the problem? below is my code:
public static final ImageIcon ICON_FOLDER =new ImageIcon("folder.gif");
for (int i=0; i<v.size(); i++) {
FileNode nd = (FileNode)v.elementAt(i);
IconData idata = new IconData(DirTree.ICON_FOLDER,
DirTree.ICON_EXPANDEDFOLDER, nd);
DefaultMutableTreeNode node = new
DefaultMutableTreeNode(idata);
parent.add(node);
if (nd.hasSubDirs())
node.add(new DefaultMutableTreeNode(
new Boolean(true) ));
}if the image is in your jar file,maybe you can use:
public static final ImageIcon ICON_FOLDER =new ImageIcon(this.class.getResource("folder.gif"));
variable "this" stands for your class which extends Applet or JApplet

How to list files that are NOT in a .jar file?
Is it possible to list files (resources, .gif/.jpg files, etc.) that are NOT included in the jar but are still to be considered part of the application somewhere in the jnlp-file?
My applications requires lots of icons which I have put into .gif files. So far I kept them in individual files next to the .jar file and that worked fine.
JWS now seems to support only stuff that is included in (a) .jar-file(s). That in itself woul not be much of a problem, however, when I include my .gif files into the .jar files they seem to get corrupted by the jar-signing process (at least that what's the code says, which can suddenly not handle these images any more).My previous seem to have been non-sense. The .gif file were not corrupted, but rather they were not found at all. They actually must NOT be included in the .jar file, or else they are not found. Strange enough, the .properties-file seemingly HAS to be in the .jar file to be found.
This is something I'll probably never fully understand with java: which file-types it searches where... -

NAME
jar - Java archive tool
SYNOPSIS
jar [ -C ] [ c ] [ f ] [ i ] [ M ] [ m ] [ O ] [ t ] [ u ]
[ v ]
[ x file ] [ manifest-file ] destination input-file
[ input-files ]
DESCRIPTION
The jar tool is a Java application that combines multiple
files into a single JAR archive file. It is also a gen-
eral-purpose archiving and compression tool, based on ZIP
and the ZLIB compression format. However, jar was
designed mainly to facilitate the packaging of Java
applets or applications into a single archive. When the
components of an applet or application (.class files,
images and sounds) are combined into a single archive,
they can be downloaded by a Java agent (like a browser) in
a single HTTP transaction, rather than require a new con-
nection for each piece. This dramatically improves down-
load time. The jar tool also compresses files, which fur-
ther improves download time. In addition, it allows indi-
vidual entries in a file to be signed by the applet author
so that their origins can be authenticated. The syntax
for the jar tool is almost identical to the syntax for the
tar(1) command. A jar archive can be used as a class path
entry, whether or not it is compressed.
The three types of input files for the jar tool are:
o Manifest file (optional)
o Destination jar file
o Files to be archived
Typical usage is:
example% jar cf myjarfile *.class
In this example, all the class files in the current direc-
tory are placed in the file named myjarfile. A manifest
file is automatically generated by the jar tool and is
always the first entry in the jar file. By default, it is
named META-INF/MANIFEST.MF. The manifest file is the
place where any meta-information about the archive is
stored. Refer to the Manifest Format in the SEE ALSO sec-
tion for details about how meta-information is stored in
the manifest file.
To use a pre-existing manifest file to create a new jar
archive, specify the old manifest file with the m option:
example% jar cmf myManifestFile myJarFile *.class
When you specify cfm instead of cmf (that is, you invert
the order of the m and f options), you need to specify the
name of the jar archive first, followed by the name of the
manifest file:
example% jar cfm myJarFile myManifestFile *.class
The manifest uses RFC822 ASCII format, so it is easy to
view and process manifest-file contents.
OPTIONS
The following options are supported:
-C Changes directories during execution of the jar com-
mand. For example:
example% jar uf foo.jar -C classes *
c Creates a new or empty archive on the standard out-
put.
f The second argument specifies a jar file to process.
In the case of creation, this refers to the name of
the jar file to be created (instead of on stdout).
For table or xtract, the second argument identifies
the jar file to be listed or extracted.
i Generates index information for the specified jar
file and its dependent jar files. For example,
example% jar i foo.jar
would generate an INDEX.LIST file in foo.jar which con-
tains location information for each package in foo.jar and
all the jar files specified in foo.jar's Class-Path
attribute.
M Does not create a manifest file for the entries.
m Includes manifest information from specified pre-
existing manifest file. Example use:
example% jar cmf myManifestFile myJarFile *.class
You can add special-purpose name-value attribute
headers to the manifest file that are not contained
in the default manifest. Examples of such headers
are those for vendor information, version informa-
tion, package sealing, and headers to make JAR-bun-
dled applications executable. See the JAR Files
trail in the Java Tutorial and the JRE Notes for
Developers web page for examples of using the m
option.
O Stores only, without using ZIP compression.
t Lists the table of contents from standard output.
u Updates an existing JAR file by adding files or
changing the manifest. For example:
example% jar uf foo.jar foo.class
adds the file foo.class to the existing JAR file
foo.jar, and
example% jar umf foo.jar
updates foo.jar's manifest with the information in
manifest.
v Generates verbose output on stderr.
x file
Extracts all files, or just the named files, from
standard input. If file is omitted, then all files
are extracted; otherwise, only the specified file or
files are extracted.
If any of the files is a directory, then that direc-
tory is processed recursively.
EXAMPLES
To add all of the files in a particular directory to an
archive:
example% ls
0.au 3.au 6.au 9.au at_work.gif
1.au 4.au 7.au Animator.class monkey.jpg
e.au 5.au 8.au Wave.class spacemusic.au
example% jar cvf bundle.jar *
adding: 0.au
adding: 1.au
adding: 2.au
adding: 3.au
adding: 4.au
adding: 5.au
adding: 6.au
adding: 7.au
adding: 8.au
adding: 9.au
adding: Animator.class
adding: Wave.class
adding: at_work.gif
adding: monkey.jpg
adding: spacemusic.au
example%
If you already have subdirectories for images, audio
files, and classes that already exist in an HTML direc-
tory, use jar to archive each directory to a single jar
file:
example% ls
audio classes images
example% jar cvf bundle.jar audio classes images
adding: audio/1.au
adding: audio/2.au
adding: audio/3.au
adding: audio/spacemusic.au
adding: classes/Animator.class
adding: classes/Wave.class
adding: images/monkey.jpg
adding: images/at_work.gif
example% ls -l
total 142
drwxr-xr-x 2 brown green 512 Aug 1 22:33 audio
-rw-r--r-- 1 brown green 68677 Aug 1 22:36 bundle.jar
drwxr-xr-x 2 brown green 512 Aug 1 22:26 classes
drwxr-xr-x 2 brown green 512 Aug 1 22:25 images
example%
To see the entry names in the jar file using the jar tool
and the t option:
example% ls
audio bundle.jar classes images
example% jar tf bundle.jar
META-INF/MANIFEST.MF
audio/1.au
audio/2.au
audio/3.au
audio/spacemusic.au
classes/Animator.class
classes/Wave.class
images/monkey.jpg
images/at_work.gif
example%
To display more information about the files in the
archive, such as their size and last modified date, use
the v option:
example% jar tvf bundle.jar
145 Thu Aug 01 22:27:00 PDT 1996 META-INF/MANIFEST.MF
946 Thu Aug 01 22:24:22 PDT 1996 audio/1.au
1039 Thu Aug 01 22:24:22 PDT 1996 audio/2.au
993 Thu Aug 01 22:24:22 PDT 1996 audio/3.au
48072 Thu Aug 01 22:24:23 PDT 1996 audio/spacemusic.au
16711 Thu Aug 01 22:25:50 PDT 1996 classes/Animator.class
3368 Thu Aug 01 22:26:02 PDT 1996 classes/Wave.class
12809 Thu Aug 01 22:24:48 PDT 1996 images/monkey.jpg
527 Thu Aug 01 22:25:20 PDT 1996 images/at_work.gif
example%
If you bundled a stock trade application (applet) into the
following jar files,
main.jar buy.jar sell.jar other.jar
and you specified the Class-Path attribute in main.jar's
manifest as
Class-Path: buy.jar sell.jar other.jar
then you can use the i option to speed up your applica-
tion's class loading time:
example$ jar i main.jar
An INDEX.LIST file is inserted in the META-INF directory
which will enable the application class loader to download
the right jar files when it is searching for classes or
resources.

Images are not comming out when application is running through jar file.
I have written an application program using j2sdk1.4.1 that needs your help.
My application folder's contents.....................................................................................
C:\Examination\Examination.class <-----This is the main class and application's entry point.
C:\Examination\ExamBox.class
C:\Examination\PaperSetterBox.class
C:\Examination\pspBox.class
C:\Examination\epBox.class
C:\Examination\TimerBox.class
C:\Examination\ReportCardBox.class
C:\Examination\HelpBox.class
C:\Examination\AboutBox.class
C:\Examination\Images\(some jpg & gif files)
C:\Examination\Sounds\(some au files)
Compilation Report: There was no error.
Execution Report : Was working properly using the command:- java Examination
Now, I created a jar file for my application in the following steps.................................
STEP-1: Firstly, I created a text file(mainclassInfo.txt) that contains
the line:-- Main-Class: Examination
This line would be automatically added to the default manifest file when I would include the name of that text file with the command to create the jar file.
Location of the text file I created: C:\mainClassInfo.txt
STEP-2: Then I went to C:\Examination and executed the following command(by using 'Command prompt'):--------------------------------------------------------------------
jar cmf C:\mainClassInfo.txt Examination.jar Examination.class ExamBox.class PaperSetterBox.class pspBox.class epBox.class TimerBox.class ReportCardBox.class HelpBox.class AboutBox.class Images Sounds
Finally, I got the jar file:- Examination.jar
Double clicking on it application ran as it was expected.
Then, I thought, that as all the files & folders the application needed to run properly were packaged in the jar file; I should delete all the contents of the folder 'Examination', so that no one could see or use anything of the resources easily. I did that.
So, then it became only:-- C:\Examination\Examination.jar
Thereafter, I tried to run the application again and there a problem occurred! The application was running, but the images, those were to be used and shown by the application were missing somehow!!
Moreover, when I kept a copy of those 2 folders('Images' and 'Sounds') into the C:\Examination and ran the application again all the images came out normally!
I just can't understand why it's happening so mysterious?
I don't want to leave anything of the resources in an open place; I mean, outside of the jar file. The images should be used and shown by the application.
Help me please!The Image class itself does not have any methods for loading images from files so you must be using something more. Most methods for loading images from files have an overload that lets you use a URL, so you just need to use that method with a call to getResource like in the other thread. If you can't think of anything else, you can use ImageIcon to load an Image (the Image is returned by a call to ImageIcon.getImage). See also "how to use icons" from the swing tutorial:

How to delete a jar file after loading image files from it
Hi,
How can I delete a jar file after some image files have been loaded? For example, say, I have "a.jar" which contains an image "a.gif" in the root directory of the c drive. I would like to get the image size and then delete the jar file. Here is the code snippet:
URL url = new URL("jar:file:/C:\\a.jar!/a.gif");
Icon icon = new ImageIcon(url);
System.out.println("icon size ? " + icon.getIconHeight());
File file = new File("c:\\a.jar");
while(file.exists())
file.delete();
try
Thread.sleep(100);
catch (InterruptedException ignored)
System.out.println("file deleted.");I get the image size correctly but just can not delete the jar file. Apparently the file handle is not released, but how to close it? Any hint will be appreciated.
Justin JanI am sure the URLConnection.defaultUseCaches is set before it is connected otherwise I should catch an IllegalStateException on conn.setUseCaches(false).
try
URL url = new URL("jar:file:/C:\\a.jar!/a.gif");
URLConnection conn = url.openConnection();
conn.setDefaultUseCaches(false);
conn.setUseCaches(false);
Icon icon = new ImageIcon(url);
System.out.println("icon size ? " + icon.getIconHeight());
url.openConnection().getInputStream().close();
System.gc();
System.runFinalization();
File file = new File("c:\\a.jar");
while (file.exists())
file.delete();
try
Thread.sleep(10);
catch (InterruptedException ignored)
System.out.println("file deleted.");
catch (Throwable t)
t.printStackTrace(); -
How Do I get icons image directory to work in a JAR file?
Yes, I must admit after going through the tutorial and other stuff I am stiil stumped
I have an application that uses the jlfgr icons for the toolbar, and it works fine as long as i actually run it from the directory that it is in.
I would like to put in into a jAr file, and be able to execute it from other places.
I have a Directory named PhoneBook
in that are the classes I use
AddressBook - the main class
PersonEntry - The 'data class'
and various other things like FileFilters.....
inside that directory there are two more:
images - contains all the icon images
Data - where the default 'database' entries are stored.
I use code like this:
private void fillToolBar( JToolBar bar )
Dummy = new JButton(new ImageIcon("images/New16.gif"));
Dummy.setActionCommand("New");
Dummy.addActionListener(this);
Dummy.setToolTipText("New");
bar.add( Dummy );
// etc etc
to get all the icons into the toolbar
I have made a Jar file that has all the classes and all the directorys with the icons in it
and so the program runs, but does not get the icons for the toolbar, I just get a whole load of 'dud' buttons.....
AS this is the first time i've ever got the GUI to look right rather than just the code functioning properly
I'd like to get the whole thing in a working Jar file
So Could someone show me Step By Step, How I get my classes and images into a Jar file
so that i can from a different directory go
java - jar Phone.jar
and have the GUI come up with all the images, assuming I'm totally thickheaded when it comes to Jar files.?
I also can't get the images to show up if I merely run the 'program' from another directory than the one it is compiled in
I can get the program to run, just not access the images with something like
java -cp blah/blah/blah AddressBook
{the main class is AddressBook }
the data directory can be anywhere as I use a JFileChooser to allow the user to open and save desired files.
I really would appreciate some clear workable help. {though I'm running out of Duke Dollars...}What you need is a correct path to the directory
inside of the jar. This can be accomplished by adding
a line to your main program like this:
URL
url=myProgram.class.getResource("images/New16.gif");
Dummy = new JButton(new ImageIcon(URL));
where myProgram.class is the name of the class
file that contain the main method.
Hope this helps....
;o)
PS: I don't want your dukes...I got them coming out of
my ears!
O.K, that works thank you.
I put something like:
for all the 'buttons' in the toolbar
URL url = null;
Class ThisClass = this.getClass();
url=ThisClass.getResource("images/New16.gif");
Dummy = new JButton(new ImageIcon(url));
Dummy.setActionCommand("New");
Dummy.addActionListener(this);
Dummy.setToolTipText("New Database");
bar.add( Dummy );
etc for all the rest of the 'buttons'
After Reading the API docs on URL's etc I'm still not sure as to why it works, but it does....
I am able now to place the class files in a jar along with the images and it all works fine
although now I don't quite follow all my code....................
I assume that
url=ThisClass.getResource("images/New16.gif");
returns some sort of 'relative url ' ???
Thanks for the help though.
