Give Java Program Execute Access Only

Hi,
Is there a way, on windows XP, to give a java program execute access only for a certain user. This would prevent the user from reading the program, being able to copy the program, or change the program.
Thanks for any info,
John

There is no way of giving "execute-only" access to a file in Windows. There is no "--x--x--x" access like Unix.
If you can execute a file, you must be able to read it, because Windows relies strongly in "resources" (like the version resource or the icon resources) that are present in the executable file and must be read by the program.
I believe that even in Unix you can't give "--x--x--x" access to a JAR file because it must be read by the "java" executable, instead of being directly loaded by the operating system.

How can java programs execute automatically when it connects to network. What is "it"? That is, execute when what connects to the network?
Your computer? If that's what you mean, this is not a Java question. It's an OS operational/administrative question. Executing any program, whether written in Java or not, based on some system event has to do with that system, not with the program. If it's possible to do this, you'd do it exactly the same way for a Java program as you would for any other program.
Or is "it" the program itself? If this is what you mean, then it's a nonsensical question. For the program to connect to the network and detect that it has connected to the network, it must already be executing, so asking how to execute it at that point is meaningless.
Finally, I'll point out that "connecting to the network" is a pretty meaningless phrase. Or rather, it has so many potentially valid meanings that it's impossible to know which one you're referring to when you use that phrase. And I'd be willing to bet you don't have a clear picture of that yourself.

• Java Program executing on foreign PC

Hello,
I have the following Question: I have written a Project in Eclipse called my_prog which is containing the default package and 2 other packages (p_client, p_server)
The "Runner-Class" with the main method is in the default package
I can execute it in Eclipse or by "java Runner"
That is not very professional in my mind... If I want to give the Program to a client, he won't start Eclipse to execute the Program.
I think I need the Java VM on a foreign PC (is it the Rontime Environment which I can download???)
How can I make executable JAR-Files??? Who executes the JAR-File and how can I set that it is the Runner.java which contains the main Method?
Which posibilities do I have to make my Program run on a foreign PC?????
Thanks

• Java 3D executable works only on my PC

hi all,
i have a problem with a Java 3D program i wrote. I generated a executable .jar file that works fine on my PC, but when i try to run it on another PC it doesnt do anything.
On my second try i imported the Java 3D external jar files ( j3dutils.jar, j3dcore and vecmath.jar) and builded the program with FatJar. Again it works fine on my pc but not on other pcs.
My first question is ..... java 3D must not be installed on the other pcs so that the program runs, right?
And the second one.... has anyone an idea how to fix that?
Thanks a lot!!!

Hi,
thanks for your answer, that helped a lot!!!
I typed ../java -jar myProg.jar in the commandline as you said
and got the Exception:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/media/j3d/Node
at.....
caused by javax.media.j3d.NodeDoes this exception mean that i have to install Java 3D on that Pc so that the program runs? I am asking because on the Pc i implemented this program i have Java 3D installed and the program runs without any exceptions.
If yes, is there an other way to handel this so that the user can get my program and run it immediately without having to install Java 3D?

You can download the drivers from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/index.html.
Note that oracle.jdbc.driver is desupported after 10.2, http://forums.oracle.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=201, so you might want to consider using a DataSource to provide Connections.

• Execute Unix command from Java program running on windows

Hello,
I need to write a java program that fetches file count in a particular unix machine directory. But java program will be running on windows machine.
The program should execute unix list command and fetch the output of that command.
Can anyone help me on this?
Thanks.

Hi there,
I had a similiar problem, though years ago. It was to have a java program execute any other. Lately, I've had to have a java program running on a unix machine execute a shell script. Entirely two different scenarios. I'm not sure what you will need for your app, but look into this:
Java Native Interface for executing C/C++ code.
C/C++ Code for launching the program you need to run.
java.lang.Runtime(?).exec(....)
With a combination of that stuff, you can make a launcher for any os that has Java running on it, and with Runtime, you can exec() pretty near any sort of unix shell or app command you'd like.
Good luck.

Hi,
01. You need to create a procedure to check the permission based on the username and returnm true or false based on the user access.
Then in the form, In "When-New-Form_Instance" trigger call that and check wheher user has permission or not.
If not show a error and then call "Exit_Form" in-built function.
02. Other alternative way you can do is to add some code to logon screen and then hide unwanted menu items dynamically

• Best Way to Make a Simple Java Program Configurable?

I have a java program that does some stuff involving a database. It's basically a script, but I chose to use Java because of the nice JDBC facilities. Anyway, I plan to schedule a task to have the java program executed daily, but it would be nice if I could configure it without having to recompile the program every time. By configuration, I mean remembering about 6 lines of text, such as database connection address, user-name, password, spread sheet to update, etc. Since I am storing a username and password, I should also encrypt the data. Is there some standalone Java program that is made for creating config files, which would be encrypted and have some sort of an API to access all the data stored in the config file? I am basically thinking of a savable hashtable of Strings mapping keys to values where the values can be configured by some standalone application that allows the values associated with each key to be changed, preferably through a GUI. I could make this, but I figured there may already be something that does this.

Only thing I still need is some way to hide the password that I plan to store in it.That's a completely separate issue. There could be a lot of discussion on this but basically you can't reliably hide a password that you store somewhere no matter what you do. You can do things that will prevent the idly curious from knowing it but it's a lot harder to prevent the determined cracker from knowing it.

• Running a java program a set number of times

This is a general question. Is it possible to make a java program run only 5 times for the sake of arguement.
Basically I want to write a program that will give the user some flexibility when it will actually run another Java program, but I only want them to be able to say "not now' for a set number of times. When the last time comes the other program will launch. I was initially thinking of the Do Whilw loop, but this needs to work when the program is restarted.
Program starts, it has 5 times it will run before it does something else(doesn't really matter now I think). User takes option "Not Now" and the program ends, but warns the user this will run 4 more times before you will need to do something.
This process will repeat until the user takes the option "Ok install now" or the time limit expires and the install occurs anyway. Can someone point me in the right direction.

ok I see so it's like one those programs that you download for free on the internet and they give you a set amount times to use it before you have to pay for it. but in this case when the number of times you use it equals 5 (or when the user clicks ok) a different java app will open automatically.
My first thought would be to Write a Serialized object to disk using objectOutputStream that stores the number of times the application has been opened. and each time the program runs it checks for the serialized object and then you can do something like what I posted before. of course if were worried about security the user could always look for the object and erase it, if so then I guess we would have to come up with another plan of attack
Hope this helps
