Gmail & Safari 4.0.3

Is anyone else having problems with Gmail with Safair 4.0.3? Actually the same thing if I use Opera, Camino or Firefox. Has one of the Tiger updates blocked something?
For the past few weeks there are certain items within Gmail that no longer work. For one I'm no longer able to use 'labels' to attach to e-mails so that I archive.

Joe,
Thanks for the reply. My trouble is that it doesn't make a difference whether I use Safari, Camino, Opera or FireFox. That "labels" segment will not work in Gmail. It was only after digging around in one of the Google help areas that I located a comment by Google that they indeed know of the problem and were working on it. There was also a button to send in an error report for that issue.
I just don't see why Google hasn't fixed the problem.

  • How to recover the "GMail" Safari extension icon?

I seem to have lost the "GMail" Safari extension icon. This is the one with the plain "envelope" outline (NOT the "GMail Counter" one). It originally appeared as a selection in the Safari/View/Customize Toolbar window, but is now gone. And that particular extension does not appear in the "Safari/Safari Extensions..." option.
I thought I recalled that there is a way to delete Safari and then restart OSX to have it reinstalled, but I can't accomplish that it seems.
All advice appreciated for how to recover that "GMail" Safari extension.
    TIA

    UPDATE.
I found that Extension on my iMac running Lion. (Library/Safari/Extensions). Sent as an attachment to an email to myself and copied it to that location on my MBP.
    Problem solved.
Suggestion: Do NOT "Uninstall" Safari extensions from the Toolbar. Just do Safari/View/Customize Toolbar and simply Move the unwanted extension back to the Customize window.

  • GMail / Safari weirdness

    Hi All,
When I am viewing my gmail email on my iPad in Safari, every few messages don't render properly. I see fragments of other messages inside my email and the message is garbled. Not sure what's causing it. Clicking on the refresh icon doesn't generally fix it either. Sometimes, it will resolve by switching to view another message and then selecting the offending message again, sometimes not...
    Any ideas?
    - Jon

Not sure what is causing it, but you can access your Gmail account with the iPad's Mail application. You can access the account as a POP, IMAP, or as an Exchange account. If you access the account as an Exchange account, this also provides for over the air syncing for your Google contacts and calendar events.

  • Gmail - Safari 3.1 - Can not type a reply

If I use 'Reply' to any email, the cursor appears in the correct position but as soon as I start typing the cursor disappears and no text appears. Note that I have tried with or without use of the shift key and the effect is the same.
This is a dreadful bug meaning that my use of Safari is seriously compromised.
I'm now going to have to find another browser to install on my MacBook.
A round of applause to the Safari 3.1 testers (not).

Me too! Just started this morning -- no upgrading involved. I was going to BestBuy.com repeatedly the last few days, just by entering "b" in the address line. It would fill in the "www.bestbuy.com" from the dropdown list. All of a sudden, it just puts in "bestbuy/" and won't add the rest. Also did it on www.target.com . If I delete the slash, then it fills in and goes to the site.
I trashed the plist, and cache, and restarted. No help.

  • Safari hangs on Gmail and other websites

    Hello,
Everytime i log into gmail safari keeps giving me wheel of death, status bar hangs on 5 - 7 items loading.
I tried updating Flash, Air, and safari recent update and nothing works but disabling all plugins from the pref pane.
This also occurs on Firefox also so im not sure what is causing it. how can i debug it?

I resolved it. and i see there is a few more people that ran into this problem.
THIS IS A ADOBE AIR PROBLEM.
There was an adobe air or flash update recently, that caused the browsers to hang due to FScommand scripting passed to the player that caused this.
    I did:
    Utilities:
Adobe Air Uninstaller - removed everything
    Adobe flash update.
Utilities - disk utility - repair permissions.
    Viola. Everything works.

  • Why Does Safari Use Excessive Memory with Gmail?

I am running Safari 7.0.1 along with Maverics (10.9.1) on a 2011 MacBook Air with 4 GB of memory. Just recently I have begun to notice excessive memory usage when using Gmail. I have iStat Menus as well as something called MemoryKeeper so I can monitor memory use in real time.
The table below shows numbers taken from Activity Monitor with each of the sites running in a single tab.  The Safari Web Content is through the roof with Gmail compared to My Yahoo or indeed with any other single site. In Gmail it starts out above 500 MB and slowly comes down to the lower end indicated if I do nothing. If I open tabs with both My Yahoo and Gmail, I sink below 100 MB and if I have three tabs open I'm heading to zero. As far as I can tell, the excessive memory useage only occurs with Gmail.
    Process
    Yahoo
    Gmail
    Safari
    156 MB
    167 MB
    Safari Web Content
    96 MB
    531-338 MB
    Kernel Task
    464 MB
    464 MB
    Free
    662 MB
    210 MB
Typically I will close Safari and start it again if I get much below 100 MB. I usually have to close Safari at the end of the day to refresh it for the next day. This has only become a problem within the last month or so, and I am at a loss to explain it. I thought it might be Mavericks related (though I have been running Mavericks since its release), but then the Safari I have on my 5 year old Mac Mini running Snow Leopard gives me similar results.
When I run Google Chrome I don't have any of these problems. Indeed, though it is not my preference, I am having to use it more and more for day to day activities or I have to stick with one tab if I am going back and forth between Gmail and other sites. I have not seen this problem reported elsewhere, so I have to believe there is something going on in my system. I have cleared the cache one time on both systems, but that doesn't seem to have made any difference. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

I would not have even tried this app had I not heard about it on the Mac Rountable podcast (episode #222), where it received favorable comments from otherwise knowledgeable people. It also has a 4.5 star rating on the Mac App Store with 706 5-Star ratings out of 1,049. If you add up the 5-Star and 4-Star ratings you get close to 1,000 favorable rates right there. I have to wonder if people really know what's going on. Since the most obvious detrimental effects for me were centered around using Safari with Gmail on Mavericks, others must not be using that lethal combination. As I mentioned, using Google Chrome does not seem to have any obvious deliterious effects.
Well, there's going to be one more 1-Star rating reflecting my experience.

  • Safari crashes when trying to log into Gmail

    Hello.
Does anyone else have this problem? Whenever I try to sign in to Gmail, Safari freezes (the little rainbow circle keeps going around) and I have to force-quit out of it.
I figured maybe I just need to reinstall Safari. I had Safari 1.3.1, but went back and re-installed version 1.2. When I tried to install the 1.3.1 update, it won't let me. The installation window is giving me the red arrow on the harddrive sign.
What do I do? I now have the older version of Safari than before and I still cannot sign into Gmail.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you.

    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    manja,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Safari 1.3.1 was released with 10.3.9. You can download and reapply the Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9, or you can use Pacifist to extract and install Safari 1.3 from the Combined Update package.
You should then be able to install in succession Safari 1.3.1 and Safari 1.3.2, and Security Update 2006-002 (10.3.9 Client).
If you run into Safari prohibitive installation problems, you may have to remove any Safari.pkg files from the Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts Folder and then reattempt reinstallation.

  • Gmail makes Safari crash

When I open Gmail safari start loading the page, but in a few second the coloured spinning weel appears and i have to force quitting.
I have read the other posts about similar problems and tried the apple troubleshooting for Safari.
All i can do is to turn off the plug-ins from the preferences. if I do this, Gmail works, but very very slowly.
    Any idea for different solutions?
PS: a few days ago i upgraded Tiger to Leopard, but Safari worked good until i did the upgrade for Safari 3.2.1

I didn't need it. As soon as I reactivated the plug-in option, today all worked well... but I'm suspicious, it could happen again because I haven't changed nothing at all. Mysterious Safari....

  • Some accounts on iMac unable to log into Gmail (OS X 10.6.4, Safari 5.0)

I have 5 accounts configured on my Intel iMac.
After upgrading to Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6.4), some of the accounts are unable to log into Gmail directly from a browser (not using the Mac mail client). It seems to time out. These accounts were not previously using the Mac mail client.
The accounts that previously used the Mac mail client can still successfully retrieve their Gmail via the Mac mail client, and they can still log directly into Gmail from a browser also.
Operating system: OS X 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard)
Program and version you use to access Gmail: Safari 5.0
Your antivirus software (e.g. Norton 2007): None
Any extensions, toolbars or plug-ins: None

    Hi,
Your antivirus software (e.g. Norton 2007): None
I hope that means you do not have Norton a/v software installed.
For Gmail. From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the Security tab. Click: Show Cookies. Delete all Gmail related cookies. Relaunch Safari.
If you still can't login to Gmail, open Keychain Access (Applications/Utilities). Select Passwords on the left. Delete the Gmail keychain.
Relaunch Safari. Login to Gmail as you normally do with your user name and password. When prompted, click Yes.

  • Safari RSS update prompt since last update?

Since the last update about 2 weeks ago, when I'm on Safari a Safari window pops up every 5 - 10 minutes asking for my name and password regarding "new RSS email update". I have never seen this before, don't know what it is, see no RSS update option on my gmail page, can't figure out why this window asks for my password and also says it will send me a password, and until I know more I've just been canceling it. Why is this happening and how do I get it to stop? I've looked at the google mail blogs and at least 12 other gmail/Safari users have had the same problem but no one seems to know what to do. I've also posted a question to google support but haven't received an answer. However, as the window that pops up has a Safari symbol, I assume it has something to do with Safari.
Also, since the update, it is taking significantly longer for pages to load and often times out, at which point I check diagnostics and see that I have a connection but then I can't close diagnostics, have to force quit, and restart. This is happening very frequently. I do 3-6 hours of research a day and frequently clear my browsing history (sometimes as often as every 15 minutes). I've spoken to the provider (Comcast) and all seems fine on that front. I am at a loss and incredibly frustrated. Help. Please. Thank you!! (I searched support topics and discussions for nearly 30 minutes and found no relevant topics - however, I can't possibly be the only one having this problem.)

I have been having the RSS feed problem too since the safari update, I didn't even know which name and password it was asking for, my gmail or Apple.. After trying several alternatives it went away and hasn't come back since. However, now gmail is not working very well at all, (since the safari update). Sometimes it will let me log into gmail and show me my inbox, sometimes it will even let me read one or 2 e-mails before hanging up, but it will not let me send any e-mails, yielding a box saying something like 'oops gmail have encountered a problem......blaa blaa #104' sometimes the number is different. I can only get into my inbox if i have just reset safari prior to loading the gmail log in page. It's very convoluted. I can't believe that there is no solution to this either. I thought there would have been many people with the same problem and fix procured instantly. Do we have to wait for another safari update to solve the problem?

  • TM (1st Gen), Lion, Thunderbolt, and Internet/Mail Access

    Hi everyone,
I ran into a bit of a problem that has me stumped.  I upgraded to Lion on a new Macbook Pro back in July.  I have an Apple Thunderbolt display connected to the MBP. I recently unboxed and connected my 1st generation Time Machine and started having internet connection issues.  I am not using my TM to create a wireless network but only as a hard drive to back up my laptop.  I connect to a wireless network not created through this TM.  My TM is connected via the ethernet port on back of the Thunderbolt display.  My observation is that whenever the TM is connected I have internet connection issues (mail - iCloud/Gmail, Safari, and Firefox).  Whenever I disconnect the TM from the ethernet port on the Thunderbolt display and turn off Time Machine from the Time Machine Preferences, I have no connection issues.
Has anyone run into a similar problem?  I would like to continue using TM to back up my MBP hard drive but also want to be able to access the internet.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

I called Apple support and they helped me solve the problem.  I should have written down the specifics, but basically I needed to streamline my prefs.  I was using both DHCP and PPPoE.  I turned off the PPPoE setting in the Airport utility in the utility folder in the Applications menu.  Sorry I can't be more specific.  I then had to restart the computer for the changes to take affect.

  • Downloading an epub

This is the story of my tribulations in attempting to open an epub file:
1 - E-mail epub to myself (on PC or iPod, or whatever)
2 - use GMail app to "open" epub (brought to a white screen)
3 - "open in Safari" option (filetype unsupported)
4 - open mail with iPod mail option
5 - acceidentally archive mail in an attempt to open the attachment
6* - (various steps to unarchive mail)
7 - open file attachment (filetype not supported)
8 - download 3rd part epub reader (Nook)
9 - 3rd party app does not support download of mail attachments
    10 - remove 3rd party app
    11 - install iPod-default option (iBooks)
12 - go to Gmail app, open attachment (iBook option not present)
13 - go to Mail app, open attachment "open in iBooks" (nothing happens)
14* - wait, is it downloading?  ***?  Nope, it is a failure
15* - research issue on internet
16 - download another 3rd party app (BlueFire)
17 - open in Mail app, Open with anything not ibooks, open with BlueFire
    18* - wait... failure
19 - open BlueFire, bypass some nonsense about linking accounts or whatever
20 - open mail in GMail app
    21 - open attachment
    22 - open in Safari
23 - file unsupported by Safari -> Open in another application
    24 - Open in non-iBooks application (BlueFire)
25 - BlueFire opens the file into the BlueFire library or whatever
26 - Open file in BlueFire (woo!)
    27 - remove iBooks
Seriously, it took me over 20 minutes to open an ePub file that I E-mailed to myself.  I am a Research Scientist who used to program computers for a living, working on my PhD.  This should not be that hard.  The opening of an ePub required the use of SEVEN applications (Store, Gmail, Mail, Safari, iBooks, Nook, BlueFire).  Nook and iBooks are both abortions that I couldn't get to work.  Mail does some sort of ePub-mangling so that nothing can be opened.  As such, if I were to do this process again, it would look like the following:
1 - Use Store to download BlueFire
2 - open mail in GMail (not Mail)
    3 - open attachment
4 - open attachment in Safari
5 - open Safari item in BlueFire
The solution that works still uses FOUR apps (Store, GMail, Safari, BlueFire), and four steps (assuming you have the relevant apps).  This requires that the user steer carefully away from Apple-provided solutions (iBooks, Mail), as they don't seem to work at all.
Dear Apple: please make the opening of a book-type file simpler.

Install Calibre on your PC.  Is the epub even readable via calibre on your PC.  Or perhaps it is encrypted.
If encrypted, then you need to use the app suggested by the publisher of the ebook.
You can transfer epub books to iBooks via iTunes on your PC (there is a 'Books' tab in iTunes on the Summary screen when your iPod Touch is connected to your PC.  Then sync your iPod Touch with iTunes on your PC and the ebook will be included in the iBook app.
Many ebook readers can use iTunes to sync books from your PC to your iPod Touch.  iTunes -> Your iPod Touch -> Apps -> Scroll to bottom of screen -> File Sharing -> Find your ebook reader in the list of File Sharing Apps (if the ebook reader supports this feature) -> Select your app -> Drag your epub to the Documents section on the right.
Calibre has a way of sync'ing with some ebook readers.
You could also try using Dropbox.com to transfer files to your iPod Touch.  Get a free copy for your PC and a free copy for your iPod Touch.
As for Apple making it easier, they did what they did for music.  They created their own store, and you can buy ebooks from the store, then directly download the ebook to your iPod Touch.  Or you can use iTunes to import ebooks to your iPod Touch, assuming the ebook is in a format that can be read by an app on the iPod Touch, and assuming it is not encrypted with an encryption that does not have a compatible reader.

  • Please can anyone help with the continuing password rejection problem with email.Ipad and other systems work fine but despite reloading my password on imac it bounces back.Apple store has been visited and I have tried everything they suggest.

Please can anyone help with the continuing password rejection problem with email on my imac.My Ipad and other systems work fine but despite reloading my password on imac it bounces back.Apple store has been visited and I have tried everything they suggest.

I use free Yahoo mail webMail access because folders I created in webmail access doesn't get set up in Apple Mail. While I was searching for post about password and keychain issues, I stumbled on several threads that complain about Mail folder issues, so I'm holding off on Apple Mail.
On the password and keychain issue that your post is all about.  I've been using login keychain to save and automatical fill my login screens for a year or so successfully, with Safari and Chrome. Automatic form fill also works for Facebook login. Unfortunately, about 4 to 6 months ago, automatic password form fill stopped working with Yahoo webmail, while still worked for GMail (Safari and Chrome). I tried deleting the password entry for my two Yahoo email accounts to start fresh, but neither Safari not Chrome will even ask me if I want to save the password. I was so frustrated that I eventually installed the keypassX 0.43 (password manager) that is quite primitive sompare to OS X's keychain (when it works). Probably no surprise to you yet.
The surprise, to me at least, is that, for whatever reason, password auto form-fill from keychain started working again for Yahoo webmail login on Safari about 5-7 days ago. Still doesn't work on Chrome!
Two tips I can share, at least with webmail access:
    1. Password is save only for one of my yahoo mail accounts. When I login in with my other yahoo account, I get no prompt to save the password, and form fill doesn't work when I try to log in a second time with my other Yahoo mail account.
    2. On inspection of my login keychain, I see a webform password item saved for my Yahoo account that works with keychain. The name of the password is: login.yahoo.com(MyAccountName1#). When I open the password item and look in the Access Control tab, I see Safari and Chome are listed as allowed to access this password item..
I also an "Internet password" item with a name of just login.yahoo.com. When I open the the password item, it looks just like the password item created for MyAccountName#1, but the MyAccountName#2 is listed in the Account field. Inside the Access Control tab, no apps are listed in access permission. I added Safari and Chrome to the lists of allowed app, saved the password item.
Now when I bring up the Yahoo login page(by bookmark) on Safari, form fill fills in MyAccountname#1 for name and the proper password and I can login in. When I change the name to MyAccountName#2, the correct password is retrieved and I can log in! Alas, it still doesn't work on Chrome.
BTW, I changed the password item type from "Internet password" to "Web Form password" and saw no difference! I also edited the name to be "login.yahoo.com (MyAccountName#2)" to look like the web form password item that works, but it has no effect either.
From my experimentation, here's my observation:
    1. A Web Form password item is created for the first account name(MyAccountName#1) for login.yahoo.com and typed as Web Form password. When I log in using MyAccountName#2, an Internet Password is created, but no applications are listed as allowed to access the password item, even when the password item was created after just logged in and logged out to yahoo with the account name and password for MyAccountName#2.
    2. Manually adding Safari as an app that is allowed to use the password item works. Doesn't work with Chrome!
The version of Safari I'm using is Version 5.1.7 (6534.57.2). My installed version of Chrome is Version 21.0.1180.79 beta.
