Good books on Designer 6i

Can anyone recommend a good book on Designer 6i ?
All the books I have come across are for Designer/2000.
thanks

Either this was a difficult question or no one wants to share their favorite books :-)
For now I settled for the German book "Masterkurs Client/Server-Programmierung mit Java: Anwendungen entwickeln mit JDBC, Sockets, XML-RPC, RMI und JMS - Kompakt und praxisnah - Zahlreiche Programmbeispiele und Aufgaben". But I'm still very much interested in other titles on the choices, trade-offs, architecture, when to use web-services, etc.

  • A good book on design patterns?

Hi there. Just wondering if anyone could recommend a good book on design patterns, for someone who's relatively experienced at the nuts and bolts of programming in a few languages, but hasn't really considered design patterns before? Someone recommended Gamma et al's, 'Design patterns: elements of reusable object-oriented software' to me, but it is perhaps a little dated now. Any thoughts?

Surprisingly, no one posted the link to the Sun J2EE Pattern blueprints:
    http://java.sun.com/blueprints/corej2eepatterns/index.html
I also liked the O'Reilly publication "J2EE Design Patterns"
They are specific to J2EE architecture, but there's a lot of reuse available even if that's not the architecture you're working with.

  • Know any good books on OO design in Java?

Can any one recommend a good book on OO design in Java.
I want a book that explains the best practice on method sizes, what to make member varibles or local variables, when to pass parameters, etc...
I have a fair bit of java programming experience, so I don't really want a book for beginners, but one that concentrates on perfecting your OO design skills.
    Any recommendations?

    Some GREAT online resources...

  • Suggest good book for J2EE Design Pattern.

Is there any good book for J2EE Design pattern? I know Head First Design Pattern book, but is focuses oncore java. I want to learn in detail with examples J2EE design pattern.
    Please suggest good books.
    Thanks in advance.
    Rahul.

most j2ee patterns are discredited now. they were mostly workarounds for deficiencies in ejb 1 & 2 specs.
"core j2ee patterns" is your best bet, but take it with a grain of salt.
    better to learn spring, IMO:

  • Good book on Object Oriented Design?

Can you recommend a good book on Object Oriented Design with lots of practical examples? I already have:
    http://www.amazon.com/Design-Patterns-Object-Oriented-Addison-Wesley-Professional/dp/0201633612/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1238324375&sr=8-1
But currently I need a book with a more basic approach.

  • What's a good book for getting started?

I've been doing web design in HTML and ColdFusion for almost 3 years. It's clear that ColdFusion is on it's way out and I need to learn J2EE/Java/JSP etc. I have a few questions:
Java is a term I've heard associated with C++ and other types of programming as well as Web design. Are the Java/C++ Java and the Web Java basically the same type of language? Is the Web Java and JavaScript the same thing? I'm very confused!
What is a good book for getting these types of questions answered and getting started in J2EE/Java/JSP? There are quite a few variations of script languages out there and I want to make sure I learn the right stuff, ie the stuff that employers are going to be needing.
    Thanks!

Here is a free online version of a good book:
    http://pdf.coreservlets.com/Core-Servlets-and-JSP.pdf
Print it off or read from the screen. Otherwise, there are several good Java books out there. What I would do is go to the bookstore and thumb through a few books. Depending on what type of book you want (example based or theory) find the books that you think would satisfy your learning style. Write down the names and authors, go home and buy them used online at Amazon for tremendous discounts. This way you can buy several versus just one.

  • Can anyone recommend any good books on leaning actionscript for flash?

Can anyone recommend any good books on leaning actionscript
    for flash?
    Intermediate level
I have been using flash for about 2 years more as a hobby
than anything else, some websites etc but now I realise I am going
to need to learn more actionscripting to do what I want, I have
come to terms with the simple stuff like goto – basic
variables – load mov – enough to programme up website
    navigation.
I ideally want to learn more about the dynamic side of flash,
mostly for designing user interfaces and websites etc
I’m after a book that doesn’t get too heavy too
fast yet I’m a little past the more basic functions
    Any thoughts?

  • Looking for a good book about threads

    Hello all,
I am looking for a good book about threads.
I would like something which is both practical, but also provides some theoretical basis.
I am an experienced programmer, with some, but not much, experience with concurrent design.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

  • Suggest a good book for learning?

    Hey, all.
Trying to get into the automating/scripting thing as I've started a new job that has to do a lot of versions of similar animations/illustrations. I'm no programmer, but have had some success with simple AppleScripts in Illustrator and Photoshop, but After Effects doesn't like to play nice with AS. So I figure I may as well focus my efforts on ExtendScript/JavaScript to work with all the apps, be cross-platform, plus help with my limited Expressions knowledge.
So can anyone suggest some good books for learning the JavaScript language? I've done online tutorials, which have helped a little, but just a big ol' consolidated JavaScript book, teaching the structure and syntax from the beginning (again, not a programmer by trade) would be best for me. Thing is, 95% of the books I've looked at are focused on web design, which I'm not that interested in. I'll use one if the core JavaScript teachings are well-presented and I can just ignore the web stuff; just don't want to buy a book that I'm only going to read half of and not learn everything I need to.
All suggestions welcome, and thanks in advance.

  • Good book on Layout Managers...

    Hi,
I am looking for good book on Swing. I needed to be a lot of things: a good reference, good explanations, good explanation about how Layout managers work and how to design GUIs.
One of the biggest problems that I am having is, I think, not understanding how to layout my components and how to control each component so that the GUI doesn't look rediculous. So, I need a general explanation as well as a detailed, all in one.
Does anyone know of a book or a set of books that would do this?
    Thanks,
    Yaakov.

Core JFC (2nd Edition) by Kim Topely has a good section on gridbag. I really like this book. For more current books, try Java Swing, Second Edition by James Elliot et al and Swing, Second Edition by Matthew Robinson et al.
As for layout managers, we've been using RelativeLayout and are very happy with it. Coding it is rather wordy and tedious, but it makes a lot more sense to us than gridbag's wacky concepts (weights, invisible grids with insets etc). I find it much more precise for positioning components than gridbag. Our new Swing programmers understand RelativeLayout within about 10 minutes of messing with it.
Read about (and obtain) RelativeLayout at:

  • Good books for ooad

    Hello friends
Any one know some good books which will be helpful to build a server side java application.
I am using servlets and JSP's , no EJB.
I need some good standards and advise on creating the classes, passing the data from the backend to front end, etc etx
    Thanks in advance

Hi, Wrox' "Professional JSP 2nd Edition" covers a broad spectrum of
related topics (among them design and architecture). It might at least
be helpful to get you started. But as Wrox passed away, I don't know if
    it's still available...
BTW, many of the design patterns in
    http://java.sun.com/blueprints/corej2eepatterns/Patterns
are also applicable when you don't want to use EJBs.

  • Need good book for ...

I'm looking for a good book that talks about the structure of a database at the filesystem level. Information about which files are used to do what. Many beginner books I see try to explain databases from the inside while many advanced books are over my head technically based on my current knowledge of databases. I'm not trying to build/design one, just manipulate, backup, maintain one that's already there.

This "books" are good and free http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14220/toc.htm

  • Anyone recommends a good book for object oriented programming

I am a college student in computer engineering (Software) and have been programming using Java for over a year. I have become really interested in the design of softwares and the "beauty" of object oriented programming, and thus would like to advance my knowledge about the topic (my university offers an advanced oop class but I would have to wait another 6 months to take it). So my question is, could you recommend me any book that covers the subject of object oriented programming extensively? (I have learned most of the oop I know from "An Introduction to Programming and Object Oriented Design Using Java" by Nino and Hosch.
    Thanks in advance

Some years ago I remember cutting my teeth on OOP using an excellent book by Grady Booch. If it's still in print and has been updated, it may be worth a look. Again it was decent. Also consider picking up a book on design patterns. Good luck.
Edit: I found it, it's called "Object-Oriented Analysis and Design with Applications", and it's in its third edition. You can find it here on Amazon.

  • Good Books/Tutorials

I have a firm grasp on objects, abstract classes, and interface, as well as inheritance and encapsulation. I understand the concepts and whatnot.
The problem is that when I think about writing a program using these concpets I have difficulties. Not because I don't know how to implement them, but because I'm unsure how to relate interfaces and abstract classes to the project.
In the examples that I've read, they use Animals, Shapes, and whatnot. The desings seem intuitive, but what about real programs...
Can anyone give me a good tutorial or book that would help me?
    Thank You

I have a firm grasp on objects, abstract classes, and
interface, as well as inheritance and encapsulation.
I understand the concepts and whatnot. I used to think the same way before comming to this forum. But I am still learning these concepts.
Probably you would be in the same phase.
Search on this forum, you would be finding a lots of beautiful matters.
    For example see this thread:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=789900
It is a very basic example, but you could get marvelous things if you search.
The problem is that when I think about writing a
program using these concpets I have difficulties. Not
because I don't know how to implement them, but
because I'm unsure how to relate interfaces and
abstract classes to the project.basically, the concept behind interfaces and abstract classes is generalization.
They make up a contract, and any class could implement that contract.
I think you should read about "Design patterns", these are commonly followed programming techniques for specific scenarios, you have to just identify your scenario.
"Java Design Patterns" by James W Cooper. is a good book for that.
In the examples that I've read, they use Animals,
Shapes, and whatnot. The desings seem intuitive, but
what about real programs...No body is going to code for you! You have to code by your own (that's what for you get paid). You can request for help, but don't rely on others for getting your problem solved.
Can anyone give me a good tutorial or book that would
help me?Read "Programmer's Guide to Java Certification" by khalid A. Mughal" Really nice book for clearing concepts.
Don't read this book-> feel it, work with it.
Once I read this whole book in one day (can you believe it). But I didn't got anything out of it. I thaught it is a worthless book.
But then one of my friend told said the same sentence to me that I mentioned above, Now I am not reading it, I am feeling it. Its been 2 weeks, and I havn't even completed half of the book.
Well I think now I am booring you all. So I shut up my mouth.
    Thank YouYour welcome dear!
