Grant connect to user oracle?

hi,
if i grant connect to an different user from sysdba means what ?
will that user get all privilege like create , drop etc of sysdba?
thanks

It means you have not read the docs.
Connect is a role not a privilege. And it does precisely nothing other than grant "CREATE SESSION" in currently supported versions of the product. In my opinion is should have never been created, or granted, to anyone for any reason ever and I am thrilled Oracle finally agrees.
Do not grant SYSDBA to any one or anything. It serves a very specific purpose and as you have not read the docs my only recommendation is that you go to http://tahiti.oracle.com and not consider it again except in those contexts in which Oracle brings it up: Start with the Concept docs.
While the CONNECT role is created by default and by default will have certain privs depending on the version of Oracle, I'd drive home to people asking this question that, since it <i><b>is</i></b> a role, it means only and exactly whatever privs have been granted to that role <u>in the customer's database</u>. First, this response deals with the possibility that it might have been altered from its default state. Second it would (hopefully!) make the point that even though it comes with the database, it's still JUST a role and therefore has no 'special' properties that a role named FUBAR might not have.

  • Grant connect allows viewing of other users

    Situation:
    In SQL*Plus: Create a user, grant connect to the user. Connect as the new user and try to query dba_users. ORA-00942 error occurs (which is good).
    In Raptor, connect as the new user. Expand the users tree and now you, the new user, can see every user in the database (among other data dictionary items). That's not good, right? This occurs in the latest release (0919).

    Do you suggest that through raptor you can get access to dba objects with only connect granted? Impossible :) Try this in raptor and sql+
    select * from all_users;
    select * from dba_users;

    Hi,
    I am using Oracle 10g. My question is, is it possible to find how many users are connected in the Oracle Server. We are having one Server and we are having many client machines which will connect the Oracle.
    And one more question in the meanwhile i want to take Backup of one database which client as connected. Is it get any problem to the client machine which is accessing the server. And How to take the backup from the server machine. Any commands to process.
    Thank u...!

    Hi there.
    If You run
    select count(*) from v$session where username is not null;you'll get the number of users connected to Oracle server,
    and yes , you could do backup while users are connect to db you are backing up.

  • Grant permission to all objects of a schema to apps user(Oracle 10g)

    Dear Fiiends,
    I would like to grant permission on all objects of a particular schema to apps user(Oracle 10g).How do I do it?
    (ex)grant all on <schemaname>.<objectname> to apps with grant option.
    This is the permission i want to give but i can't do it for all objects one by one so how do i do it in a single command.
    Regards,
    Arun

    You can't do it in a single command. You have to give object-by-object privileges (you could grant something like SELECT ANY TABLE, but that applies to every schema in the database and is generally a rather bad idea). You can, however, use a bit of dynamic SQL to do the job, i.e.
    FOR x IN (SELECT * FROM user_tables)
    LOOP
      EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'GRANT ALL ON schema_name.' || x.table_name || ' TO apps WITH GRANT OPTION';
    END LOOP;You can do the same with other object types, hit DBA_TABLES rather than USER_TABLES if you don't want to run this as the object owner, etc.

    Hi,
    I tested the following and got the expected results (doenst connect). I'm using 10.2.0.2 ODP, and got the same behavior pointing to 9206 db and 10.2.0.2 db.
    I did a quick check and dont see any obvious related bug fixes in ODP, but if you're not using 10.2.0.2 ODP, you might want to try that.

  • Connect Problems with Oracle Database Express Edition 11g Release 2

    Hello,
    I am a student trying to install Oracle Database Express Edition 11g Release 2 and SQL Developer on my home system, Win7 64Bit, in order to practice some things I've learned from me DBA class and Developer classes.
    Anyway, I have everything installed, but I am having difficulty connecting as SYS or SYSDBA in the 'Run SQL Command Line', I keep getting the ORA-01017: invalid username/password: logon denied.
    However, If i select the 'Start Database' I get this:
    C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\11.2.0\server\bin>
    and I can type sqlplus / as sysdba and it starts up just fine and show user lists me as "SYS".
    but if I go back to 'Run SQL Command Line' I still cannot connect as SYS or SYSDBA...I find this both confusing and frustrating. I don't know if I am in different instances or something like that, but I seem to be limited to connecting only as "SYSTEM". I need SYS because I want to practice creating datafiles, instances and things like that, but I seem to be lost.
    Also, I am trying to create a new DB connection with SQL Developer and I can only us SYSTEM for my login which, if I understand correctly, will limit my privileges. Again When I try to sign in with SYS or SYSDBA I get error'd out. When I installed Ora11gDBExpress I was prompted in input a single password that was supposed to grant me access as SYS or SYSTEM, but I am limited to only SYSTEM for some reason.
    So, I am looking for help/guidance as to what to do.
    Thanks in advance for any and all help,
    Warren

    General rule of thumb, don't use sysdba unless you want to shut down the database, or grant a database user privileges on a sys object.
    A SYSTEM connection is not "limiting", it has the DBA role which means a user with a system connection can do most anything needed, including select/update/delete/drop any user's objects as well as change parameters in the instance.
    The system user can indeed add datafiles, tablespaces, etc. The instance and database should already be created as long as the installer completed all its chores correctly. For XE, per the license agreement only one instance can run on one host. If you want to try creating a database, it will require shutting down the XE instance and creating a new database service, creating the database, and installing the system catalog and any other optional components desired. Good practice indeed, but a bit advanced for the new user.
    Do create users for schemas ... connect system; create user <username> identified by <password> and connect <username> for the schemas (a collection of objects) within the database. Grant the resource and create session privilege to <username> to allow the database user the ability to create tables, indexes, stored procedures, etc.
    There is no "or" in a sys as sysdba connection, from 10g onwards a sys connection requires using the sysdba privilege. To enable a sysdba connection, add your host user to the ORA_DBA group on the host. To verify the OS users in the ORA_DBA group, this might work for win7, in a cmd box ...
    $ net localgroup ora_dba
    ...If your OS user is in the ora_dba group the sys as sysdba password is not relevant, you can in fact type anything for a password. If you wish to connect with the sysdba privilege from a remote client, that is a bit different and requires knowing the password set in the instance password file. Which should be set the same as the system password defined in the installer, but you can change that by creating a new password file. Another slightly advanced topic.
    In Windows IMHO its better to leave the listener and database set to Manual start (in the services applet, Start/Run/services.msc) and start the listener, then the database, when its needed. At least for an XE instance, as its intended for practice and learning RDBMS management.

  • Proxy users  - oracle 9.2  - accessing via sql plus

    I may be totally off track here, but here is what I want
    to do.
    I have 2 schema's (schema A and schema B).
    schema A has multiple objects (tables) within it.
    I want to allow another user, schema B to access these objects. Can I use the Proxy User settings to do this? By going in and allowing Schema B to proxy for this user (shcema a). "ALTER user schemaA GRANT CONNECT THROUGH schemaB"
    I try this and then go into sqlplus and log in as
    schemaB, but I can't see any of schemaA's objects.
    Am I missing somthing here?
    In the past I have always assigned the proper grants to a role and assinged them to schema B as needed which works fine. However, it seemed to me if the proxy user worked the way I thought it would you could do things for an entire schema at one time instead of object by object using the grants.
    Thanks

  • How to user ORACLE as username in SQL Developer

    Hi,
    I am new to sql developer. Could you please tell me how do I connect as "ORACLE" user in SQL developer?
    I have full privileges using sys & oracle. I tried using sql as sysdba too but it is not accepting it in spite of providing correct password.

    >
    When I tried connecting to the database as " username - sys as sysdba" in spite of providing correct password, it says, logon denied, incorrect username/password. The oracle database version is 10.2.0.4 & sql developer is 3.5.
    >
    Are you sure you are using Oracle's sql developer?
    This is the official product page
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/sql-developer/downloads/index.html
    IT shows the current latest version is 3.1.07.42 so Oracle doesn't have a version 3.5 yet.
    And the official product does not have a " username - sys as sysdba" selection anywhere that I can find. There is a role selection dropdown that includes a SYSDBA choice.
    So you provided information that can't possibly be correct and you did not respond to any of the questions that I asked other than DB version.
    If you want help you need to provide SPECIFIC information about what steps you have taken and what results you got.
    What steps did you take, specifically, to create a user called "ORACLE"? What user was used to create the "ORACLE" user? What grants (roles & privileges) were granted to the user named "ORACLE"?
    As for me, since you are not willing to provide information about the other questions that were ask I can't help you so I wish you luck.

  • How to restrict grant connect through with Data Vault

    I need to restrict the ability to grant proxy privileges in the database. This is the statement: alter user USER_A grant connect through USER_B;
    I tried creating this rule that looks at the sql text for %CONNECT THROUGH% in the statement and then added it to the "Can Maintain Own Account" Rule Set which is attached to the Alter System command but it doesn't appear to be working. How can I get this working? Is my rule that I created correct. Ultimately what I want to do is allow proxies to be created for most users but just restrict only certain special users.
    BEGIN
    dbms_macadm.delete_rule(rule_name => 'NO_PROXY_PRIVILEGES');
    DBMS_MACADM.CREATE_RULE(rule_name => 'NO_PROXY_PRIVILEGES',
    rule_expr => 'INSTR(UPPER(DVSYS.DV_SQL_TEXT),''%CONNECT THROUGH%'') = 0');
    END;I am running Oracle 11.2.0.2 Enterprise on Windows Server 2008R2
    Thank you.

    You may get a better answer in the security forum:
    Security
    That being said - there are authorization checks that you can create for SE16.
    Create an authorization field via SU20.  Create the object via SU21.
    Create a role.  Add transaction SE16 to the role.  Create a profile.  Activity would be display.  And then you can add the objects that you created.
    Again you may get a better answer from someone who does security everyday.  I'd suggest posting in the security forum.

    Hi:
    I am currently working of a real high volume application that uses

    Well... If you are hinting at a Database Connection object being storedas a
    member variable in a DAO I say yes. Otherwise
    The application as such is "supposed" to be stateless. With a useraction being
    atomic. But then there are some "things" cached for "perf" reasons.Then it sounds like a problem with DAO, unless you can be sure the DAO
    objects
    are thread-safe, and that they/you close and/or nullify their connection
    references by
    the end of each invocation.
    The code that is used to get db connection is
    java.sql.Driver myDriver =
    (java.sql.Driver) Class.forName(DBDRIVER).newInstance();
    String url = DBURL;
    java.util.Properties props = new java.util.Properties();
    props.put("weblogic.server.url", SERVERURL);
    props.put("weblogic.jdbc.datasource",DBSOURCE);
    myCon = myDriver.connect(url, props);What are the DBDRIVER and DBURL strings?
    I recommend:
    DBDRIVER = "weblogic.jdbc.pool.Driver";
    and DBURL = "jdbc:weblogic:pool:YOURPOOLNAME";
    then
    myConn = myDriver.connect(DBURL.null); // no props needed.
    Actually there are three connection pools to three diff db. Two connpools seems
    to be OK and they get the connection from DataSource (JDBC 2.0) butthen they
    are low volume. The one who is loosing connection get the connectionby above
    code.
    that would prevent their being GC()'ed, and I can show you a way to
    get
    pool
    connections more directly than from DataSources.HEY --- That would be a cool trick to know ;)Now, all you need is to verify for me that 'myConn' is a method variable,
    not
    a class or isntance variable, and that the call to myDriver.connect()
    is in
    a try block whose finally block closes myConn as the first thing, then
    we should
    be good.
    Note that if your JDBC use is supposed to be stateless, then you should
    never need
    any more connections in a pool than you have execute-threads in the server.

    ITs 5.1SP11.Ok. This codeline has a finalize() method in pool connection objects,
    which will
    return abandoned pool connections to the pool when GC() reclaims them.
    This

  • How to use DB connect against secondary Oracle DB ?

    Hi all,
    this is the issue:
    an existing BI 7.0 based on Oracle 10.2.0.2.0 has to acquire data from an external Oracle 9.2.0.6 database. We want to use DB connect functionality.
    1st Q: are the existing components (DBSL and Oracle db-client) sufficient for interfacing to the secondary database?
    2nd Q: would it be better practice to look at the external database as a completely separate one? which means to install separate DBSL and db-client for it.
    Unfortunately neither online documentation nor SAP notes provide full clarification. Is there any experience in the field? all comments and contributions are warmly appreciated!
    THX, Harry

    Still puzzling on that issue. Will come back when completely solved. /hs
    OK, gurus, expertz and those to be, here's the story:
    BI 7.0 component of SCM-APO (Oracle 10.2.) is successfully connected to remote Oracle 9.2.
    Actually there have been just a couple of points to look after. First thing was to maintain the alias connection string in tnsnames.ora file. Plus this file is required twice, in the ORASID directory as well as in the <SID>ADM directory.
    Next issue is that apparently Oracle 'grants' are not supported by DB-Connect. But at least there is BI support package 11 which enables us to connect to other users' objects (different user than DB-Connect user). This healed the grants issue.
    Further topics have been the date conversion issue (this should already be done in the remote source DB) and name length and characters-2-B-used requirements.
    Once again thanks for your contributions and happy computing!
    Harry

    Certainly you are not following the rules of etiquette detailed in this forum.
    I guess you did not read the documentation relating to forum etiquette.
    If you read the forum etiquette documentation you would have read
    the following....
         When answering a question, please be courteous and respectful;
         there are different levels of experience represented here.
         A poorly worded question is better ignored than flamed -
         or better yet, help the poster ask a better question.
    Certainly when you answered me you did not followed those rules.
    You did not kindly help me make a better question, you insulted
    by implying my question is dumb and rating it as "boring".
    On your last post you insulted me again using the word "lazy" several times.
    and you also rated my question as "boring". Your opinion is of no value
    to anyone here, people just need help, if you don't know the answer just
    keep your opinions to yourself.
    If you examine my responses, none of them have an insulting word, or insulting
    implications. I cannot say the same about yours. So, I can mark your postings
    as being abusing and not following the rules of etiquette, I encourage you
    to read carefully the etiquette rules, the documentation, but I will not
    use insulting words on you as you did with me.
    I have to assume you are having a bad day. I pardon you for your disrespect.
    Stop cluttering this forum with personal offenses and comments,
    this is not the place for that.
