Graphics for iMac

I'm going to be buy a new iMac today and I was leaning towards the base model with the Nvidia GeForce graphics. I see the next version up uses the ATI Radeon though and I'm wondering if it is a worthwhile upgrade for me.
This computer will mainly be used as a media server, but I do use it for video compression fairly often. Will a graphics card speed that up at all? I'm guessing no. I won't be playing any games on this machine. Otherwise some light video editing and Adobe Lightroom are also possible.

The entry-level model you are looking at should do fine for what you want to do. I bought the 21.5" entry-level model, but upgraded the processor to 3.33Ghz and added another 4GB on third-party RAM for a total of 8GB. The 3.33Ghz processor has 6M L2 cache too compared to the 3.06Ghz's 3M L2. I'm real happy with this unit.

  • Which is better graphic for iMac 2007 or MacBook Air 2012

iMac use ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB and MacBook Air use intel graphic 5000m so which is better?

Without knowing how you intend to use the computer it's impossible to say, also you are comparing apples and oranges.

  • Pages, graphics for iMac 2014

How do I make a background image come through the foreground?

If you mean by the following image effect:
    Switch to layout mode
Place image in Pages and size accordingly
Duplicate the image (the duplicate becomes the foreground image)
Format menu > Image > Mask with Shape
Choose, or create the mask shape
    Scale and position as appropriate
Click Done. Your duplicate is now inside this mask, and the original is now the background image.
You may wish to group background image and foreground image mask to retain position.
On the Pages v5 format panel, choose Image, and reduce opacity to fade the original image as desired. If you want this background image (or image and mask) on multiple pagesSelect image and mask. Arrange menu > Section Masters > Move Objects to Section Master

  • Scanners with minimal/simple drivers and software for iMac/Lion

Just been told that my old Canoscan 8400F color flatbed scanner will not work with my new Lion installation.
Don't mind too much since I always hated the convoluted and error-prone (system-changing?) Canon scanner drivers and toolbox software.
Which Lion/iMac-friendly color flatbed hardware (for simple image, document, and perhaps OCR) systems would anyone here recommend, please, which also has minimal system installation - that is, where the driver is a single file that can be uninstalled etc?
    Thanks!

Brother drivers are included in OS X so you won't (shouldn't) have any trouble setting it up.
Image Capture works a charm, but I only scan occasionally for sharing the odd file - no complaints.
I used to work in graphics for a living so I also have VueScan, although I can't remember the last time I had to use it.
No problem scanning books, although I sometimes have to apply a bit of gentle pressure if it won't lay flat.
As I said before, very happy with my Brother (haven't got any sisters ) - and a couple of friends/neighbours with Macs seem happy with their's (after I suggested they get one - honest, I don't work for them ).
Also, if you want to use it via wifi it was a breeze to set up compared to the Lexmark and HPs I've helped people with.
If you do get one and once it's installed it's worth doing software update as SU doesn't seem to offer any driver updates if it thinks you haven't got a Brother (or any other make for that matter) unless it sees one on your network.

  • Power options for iMac

We are ready to order a new iMac.
Of the options, which is the most important for Photoshop CS3/digital photography work:
    A) the fastest video card, given two good choices
2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    B)the most powerful processor
ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO w/256MB GDDR3 or ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO w/256MB GDDR3
    C) the most RAM
I've pretty much decided on the maximum 4 gigs of RAM, but am trying to figure out if I need the MOST in the other two departments. I am not a gamer, don't do video and am switching from PCs to Mac. Whereas I'd like to keep the price down, I do not want to be underpowered just to save a couple hundred bucks and have no one locally for a reality check.

    >We are ready to order a new iMac. ...for Photoshop CS3/digital photography work
The latest iMacs will accept 4 GB RAM and have a FW800 port to add the necessary external drives. Today such a configuration indeed will do an adequate job of just running PSCS3 - but just running the apps does not make a box the best choice.
For life cycle and for performance reasons IMO iMacs are much less good choices than towers for desktop graphics workstations. iMacs are subject to the very significant limitations noted below.
Just the RAM limitation alone is an obvious serious limiter even with today's app versions, and as RAM prices continually fall modern apps and the OS are taking advantage of more and more RAM all the time. E.g. even though Photoshop can only directly address ~3 GB RAM, PS running under OS X has shown improved performance with 8 GB and more RAM for about 5 years now.
Boxes purchased today will be running the OSs/apps of the next few years, when the 4 GB limitation of iMacs will become even more significantly limiting. I consider RAM the bargain value performance enhancer today and it will only get better, so IMO limiting a graphics desktop box destined for 2009-2012 usage to 4 GB max RAM is poor life-cycle decision making.
I would also point out that, as consumer boxes, iMacs now only come with glossy displays. Matte vs. glossy is a matter of personal preference, but personally I find glossy unacceptable. Most graphics pros do not want their displays arbitrarily adding contrast and saturation to their work. That, for me, makes iMacs unacceptable at any price.
Some pros get around the iMac's glossy display issue by having their second display a matte and just using the iMac for palettes. I guess that could work but it is not something I would want to do because frequently I compare images on both displays.
All Photoshop versions require a separate hard drive for scratch to achieve best performance. That starts an iMac with at least one permanently attached external drive limited to FW speeds. The SATA of MPs is far preferable. Note too that if DSLR batch image handling were to creep into the usage during the life of the box that single FW800 port will also be limiting as regards disk i/o.
Any new box should be planned for the apps and OS versions expected to be in use during the life of the new box in addition to current apps. That includes CS4, OS 10.6 and beyond. And, IMO when buying for the graphics-pro future we should be equipping folks with the ability to handle image management apps like Aperture because managing DSLR captures will become more and more prevalent a need over the life of most new desktop graphics boxes.
iMacs are nice consumer boxes and I have purchased them for family members, but they are much less-good desktop choices for graphics professionals. Better would be a refurbished Mac Pro, even the 2006 model. Note also FWIW that new Macs of various flavors will be announced between now and Mac Expo SF in January, starting with laptops tomorrow (new MPs likely sometime between now and Q2 2009).

Install more RAM in the computer; the Mac needs to have at least 2GB of RAM and should have 4GB or more first.

Fireworks does not operate or export in CMYK color space. It
    was
developed for screen images only, and operates and exports in
    RGB color
space. It is not recommended that you use it in preparation
    of images
for print. You mentioned that you don't like photoshop. You
    might like
    Illustrator better.

  • How do I make a private album in new Photos for IMac?

How do I make a private album in the new Photos for IMac? I had one in iPhoto, and now that all the photos migrated to Photos my private album is not hidden anymore. Thanks for help!

Photos does not hide photos in albums at all.  Photos can only be hidden from Moments, Collections, Years.
If you want private albums, move the photos in questions to a different Photos Library, that you keep hidden.

hi i was just wondering if it was possible to upgrade or in some way improve your Macbook 13 inch. i like most things about the Mac but the only thing is that i cant play games. however i have been able to get some games and theres a new game coming out but i don't think my Mac will be able to play it due to bad graphics. as in  it is already struggling with some of the games that have come out recently. so yeah.....is there a way i can upgrade or at least improve the graphics for my Mac

No there isn't. Macs never were designed with gaming in mind.
