Group Permissions Problem

An issue has cropped up where whenever a user creates a file they are the owner with read/write permissions, but the group permissions are set to read only. I have checked the group permissions are being assigned in ACL, and it is set to read and write.
Please let me know if there is any other information needed to help me solve this and I will see if I can get it.
thnx.

I repaired all the permissions on the user account directories and this fixed my issues with share folder permissions for some reason.
Here is a script that will do it all in one go. Change /Volumes/XXXX/Users/ to where you users directory is. chmod the script to 755 and run with sudo and it will fix the user directory permissions for all accounts.
#!/bin/sh
# This shell script needs to be run as super-user

  • New SSD, but LOTS of Permissions Problems

I have installed a new SSD drive alongside my 1.5TB spinning drive on my 24" 2009 iMac 2.93GHz. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to move my everything except my User account over to the new 60GB SSD.
I originally assigned the User's folder on the old drive using the Users & Groups User/Advanaced Options window to change the Home directory, but that resulted in unrecoverable crashes and I had to reinstall the OS three times until I finally left my old files on the old drive and just ran my Applications on the new drive, keeping everything else on the old drive, but not connected as a "user".
However I've run into a ton of permissions problems with every file I open and many programs that access thos files and have done this so far to fix it:
Run resetpassword on both drives in terminal when I rebooted to the Mac OS X install disk (Lion).
Run Drive Genius' repair permissions utility.
    Run Disk Utility's repair permissions.
I continue to have issues with every file I use on the old drive, so I'm at a loss to fix this in place. I did read somewhere that moving your files to another drive, then reformatting then moving back can by default fix any permissions issues, so am considering this as a fix:
Move files on the old 1.5TB drive, folder-by-folder to an external drive.
    Reformat the "old" internal 1.5TB.
Recopy everything on that external back on to my 1.5TB drive.
Run Repair permissions on both drives.
This isn't fast or elegant, but I want the issue fixed. I don't want to have to open "info" on every file I use and check and change every file permission before I can use it!
Any input on whether or not this is a real fix or is there a better one?
    Thanks!

May not have anything to do with your issue but often
the master disk image loaded on your hard disk before
it leaves the factory has old (and/or odd) bits of
code on it. Plus the transfer is done as fast as
possible. Last they do not zero and erase the drive
before putting the image on it, so if there are bad
sectors they may not be marked as such and may be in
    use (& corrupted).
As you are having trouble get your data off as best
you can, erase AND ZERO the drive, repartition, and
only then re-load from your Install DVD.
Takes extra time but better safe than sorry...
Well, I have no real means to do this now as I sold off my G5 already
Also, how do you zero it?
When I reformatted my G5, I picked the option to wipe and reinstall, yet when I did, the drive name and bluetooth names were still my old ones! - Not encouraging.
In any case, its clear I have a software problem, so looks like I'll need to burn a zillion dvds and start over .
    Thanks.

  • Permissions problems, keep changing and can't save from within application

Hi there, we're running Mavericks server on our local network with a half dozen MBP and iMacs connected.
For a wee while now, our users have been getting permissions problems. Documents (Excel documents, InDesign, Photoshop etc.) are becoming read only and we can't save them to either the same folder from within the application. Even ones that the same user has created. The thing is, we can copy the document to our desktop and then back again to the same folder and continue to edit and save normally.
I've tried setting the Access for our "Group" to "Read & Write" but to no avail, this keeps happening. I can login to the server as admin and correct the permissions but they seem to keep reverting somewhere along the line...
Apologies if there's something obvious I'm overlooking.
Any recommendations? Would you recommend just removing all users and groups and starting again? Am I missing something?

Thanks Linc, I have selected the folders that are shared from the Server App "Storage" tab and made sure the permissions are correct and then "propogated" them.
All users belong to the same group we call "material".
Just wondering, should I do this sort of thing when no one is connected to the server? Or should I require that everyone log off and back on?

  • Disk permissions problems

Hi. I am having persistent disk permissions problems that do not seem to be able to repair. This is what I am getting:

Any suggestions. I know there is supposed to be no malware for mac, but could this be some?
    Thanks, Shannon

    Hi Shannon,
Do not worry about malware here.
This kind of message is generated when there is such a change in the software used by your computer's Mac OS X, that its library of permissions doesn't contain anymore the corresponding basis.
It is very likely that there is nothing to be repaired anymore as Permissions for the files mentioned in that log.
Anyway it is nothing to be worried about as malware or virus or such thing.

  • Permissions problems :( Please help!

Recently, I reinstalled Lion on my Hard drive. To make things easier for me in the long run, I had copied my entire home folder (minus the Library folder) to a separate hard drive and have been using symbolic links to link my User folder on the Lion Hard drive to the Data hard drive.
Now, back to the beginning. I erased my Lion hard drive, reinstalled Lion, set up an "Administrator" account, and used the Migration Assistant to migrate my User (Apps, support, Library, minus the settings and documents/music/etc) to a new account, thus things should be (almost) as I had left them before I erased my hard drive.
Well, here started my permissions problems with the files on the Data hard drive. I used the links already present in my Users folder, and that seemed to work fine. But then certain files would not save in Pages in my Documents folder on the Data hard drive. So, to try and fix the problem myself, I took ownership of the home folder on the Data hard drive. Well, now I simply cannot open or modify ANYTHING in my home folder without having to enter my password each time, UNLESS the document is a new one that I create. Also, Pages gives me a multitude of permissions warnings, and it is not able to auto save anything, or save anything. It is a very bad problem, because it pops up every few seconds that I am typing reports for school, which is very distracting...
I am not sure what to do from here. I have tried the "chown -R" or whatever code in Terminal, tried resetting the Home folder ACL, Home folder permissions, disk permissions... Nothing seems to be doing anything. I cannot even open my iPhoto library, which contains an extensive amount of photos, because it says that there are inconsistencies in the Library. And I do NOT want to click the repair button without fixing the permissions problems.
All that I need is to do is somehow reset the permissions to how they normally are for all my files on the Data hard drive, and get rid of the annoying password prompt that pops up every time I try to modify anything... and to be able to modify my documents without errors from programs. Thanks in advance!

You can change permissions for all items in a folder by doing the following:
Select the folder, do "get info" or apple + i
In the bottom you should see all the permissions and a lock in the bottom corner. Unlock the lock with your admin password if it needs you to.
Fix the permissions for the folder itself by adding users or groups using the plus sign.
Then click the gear symbol on the bottom and click 'apply to enclosed items'.
I think this is what you're asking? I've had to use this function WAY too often since I moved to Lion server

  • Need info about group permissions

    Hi All,
I'm confused with OIM group permissions for the following scenario.
Consider three groups G1,G2,G3 with the following permissions to a particular resource object RO.
    G1 - Has all permission in all places for this RO(resource object,process form,process definition,etc)
G2 - Has only read permissions in all places for this RO.
G3 - Doesn't have any permission with respect to this RO.
And also "Provision by Object Admin Only" is selected for this RO and G1 is an object administartor.
Now I got the follwing result when I try to provision this resource object.
case 1:The actor(logged in user) is a member of G1 & G2 ------- Got this error "DOBJ.INSERT_PERMISSION_DENIED.You do not have permission to insert this object " and the provisioning operation is failed.
case 2:The actor is a member of G1 & G3 ----- Able to provision this resource object.
Now my question is, in case1 if OIM is denying the operation as G2 doesn't have insert or write permission then how come it is allowing the opertion in case 2 where G3 doesn't have any permission ?
Is this an expected behaviour or am I missing something ?
How OIM is handling the permissions for this operation ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    NS

I have the same problem here.. the issue we have is that some users have groups that give permissions, other group that are used by access policies and others for menu visibility. The last two aren't for permissions purposes but they impact on the effective rights of the users, because for example, when users try to revoke resource, OIM says that they don't have permissions. Do you figure a workaround to solve this problem?

  • A Java security or permissions problem?

First of all, I don't know much about Java, even its naming and version numbering nomenclature, and second, if there is a better group to ask this in, please let me know.
System is Mac with 10.4.4. I have Java 1.3.1, 1.4.2, and J2SE 5.0 (1.5.0) installed. The Java preferences application lets me choose J2SE 5 or 1.4.2 to run applets via a browser. The problem happens in both settings.
The problem is that we have a printer that serves a little Java-based management application to view history and otherwise manage it. When I hit the IP, I get the Java coffee cup for a few moments, then a blank area. It fails in both Safari and Internet Explorer.
I'm pretty sure this used to work in OS X 10.4.3. It works from Windows which has runtime 1.4.something.
In the Java console, I get the following. (I've snipped some lines.)

This appears like a permissions problem, but I've fixed permissions several times.
Any idea what the problem is, and is it fixable from my end?

Problem has finally -- over a year later -- just gone away.

  • Group Permissions using External Table

I have a problem with using an external table for user group permissions.
I am using OBI authentication but need to use an external table to manage the user’s group permissions. I created two RPD groups, GROUP1 and GROUP2. GROUP1 has access to TABLE1. GROUP2 has access to TABLE2. I created the initialization block with the following SQL:
Select ‘GROUP’, groupname from groups_tab where username = ‘:USER’
I also turned on row-wise initialization.
I created a user, USER1, with access to both RPD groups. I also created corresponding Catalog Group (Settings  Administration  Manage Presentation Catalog Groups and Users  Create a new Catalog Group). I have two dashboard pages PAGE1 and PAGE2. GROUP1 has access to PAGE1 and GROUP2 has access to PAGE2. When I log in as USER1, I have a quick test on the My Dashboard page that displays the GROUP session variable (@{biServer.variables[‘NQ_SESSION.GROUP’]}). The variable displays that USER1 belongs to GROUP1; GROUP2. I still cannot see the dashboard pages PAGE1 and PAGE2. When I go to Answers I cannot see TABLE1 or TABLE2.
Obviously, I must be missing a step somewhere. Any ideas?
I have tried the Rittman Mead post (http://www.rittmanmead.com/2007/05/21/using-initialization-blocks-with-ldap-and-database-queries-to-control-authentication-and-authorization/) and I am still not getting the right results.

It's likely to be a permissioning setup issue rather than your Init Block setup which seems to be working. Start by granting your test user full permissions on the object you want and then start removing them gradually to see where you don't see the dashboard any more. I think you might be missing a Traverse privilege in your dashboard shared folders but I can't check all the possible conditions with seeing your web catalog. Also check the case of your Web Catalog groups and the ones you populate on the Init block.

  • System Wide Permissions Problem

I have a MacBook Pro, OS 10.5.8, which I've been using since 2009, and this is the first time I've encountered the problem described below.
I'm suddenly having what seems to be a system wide permissions problem. Tonight I found I couldn't add a new folder (the option was grayed out), and I noticed a pencil icon with a line through it at the bottom of the window. When I chose Get Info for that window, my name was missing from Sharing & Permissions. There was also a new name, "wheel", which I've never seen before. (3 names in all: system, wheel, eveyone.) This affects a lot of folders stemming off the HD (Applications, Library, etc.), but my user folder folder is unaffected.
I've rebuilt the permissions several times in Disk Utility, and also repaired the disk after getting an error message when verifying. But the permissions problem is still there.
So I'm wondering what in the heck could have caused this, and how can I fix it?
I found I could add my name back to the permissions list in one of the affected folders, using Get Info, and this solved the issue for that folder, but there are a LOT of folders with the same issue. Perhaps if I did this with the HD folder, and selected the "Apply to enclosed items" option at the bottom?
FWIW, we just bought & set up a new iMac, OS 10.8.2, last week. I looked at a number of folders on it using Get Info, and it seems to be configured pretty much the same way with regard to permissions, which is a little spooky. Don't know if it makes any difference, but I used the same user name, login password, apple ID & password when I set up the new computer as I have on my Macbook. Could that have caused this somehow?
Thanks for any help or thoughts.

Thank you, BDAqua for the link.
I use my MacBook Pro mainly for creating music (DAW program & plug-ins). I've occasionally had to change permissions on individual plug-ins, but never to a group of folders on this scale.
I'm wondering if there's a way to get my old permissions back, or if I should leave it as is at this point, and add my user name to the permissions on individual folders as the need arises? Don't want to screw everything up, as this is getting a little over my head.
    Any recommendations?

  • OSR11g - Setting Group Permissions on a Business

I tried setting permissions on a particular business for a group, setting all 5 (Find,Get,Save,Delete, Create) to "Allow" for the group within the OSR Control.
However, after the permissions were set, the business was no longer visible within OSB 11g's "Import from Uddi". The user configured within the OSB UDDI registry is a member of the same group within OSR.
If I remove the group permissions from the business, the business returns to being visible within OSB.
    So what's the missing step?

The same problem also occurs in an even simpler scenario:
If I apply "FIND ALLOWED" permissions to the "admin" user on a particular business within OSR 11g, that business is no longer visible to my OSB 11g dashboard for either the "Publish to UDDI" or "Import from UDDI" actions.
So I've given this to Oracle Support to digest.

  • Shared File Permissions Problem

Since upgrading the Mavericks I constantly have file permissions problems when I tranfer files between computer.  Let me see if I can clarify the problem procedurally.
    1. I have a shared directory that I set to Read&Write privileges for Admin, (me), and Everyone.
    2. I clicked the cog to apply the changes to all the enclosed items. Perfect... everything contained within the directory was changed.
    3. I went to my other Maverics computer and connected to this shared directory using SMB, AFP, connect to server command-k, and using the shared feature on the finder window, which asked me to authenticate when I make the connection. I logged in with the admin account  to make sure I absolutely had full privileges.
    4. I transferred a file to the shared directory and it ended up with the privileges of only (me) RW and Everyone as No Access. It dropped every other set of privileges that were in the directory and set Everyone to No Access, which is a major problem since it serves the files to the web server. I checked the Sharing preferences in the System Preferences. Sure enough all groups are set to Read and Write.
The shared directory in Terminal says the privileges are drwxrwxrwx+ so it should retain those privileges for any file I place in that directory, but it doesn't.
This is a new problem to Mavericks. When I used OS 10.7 and 10.8 and chose the get info option to apply the permissions to all enclosed files it stayed that way for any file I inserted into the directory. Now you have to constantly change file permissions even going from Mavericks-to-Mavericks computers.
Does anyone know how to retain the file permissions for a shared directory when new files are placed in the directory?

  • Permissions problems with Shared files

In my office of two users I have set up file sharing between two Macs, one is is running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and the other (a PPC machine) is running 10.5.8 (The Leopard Machine was migrated over from a Tiger Machine by doing a fresh install of Leopard and then using Migration Assistant to move the user account off of the Tiger Machine).
Occasionally, I need to send files to the Leopard Mac from my Snow Leopard machine, so I connect to the other Mac's Shared folder, navigate to the Drop Box, and pop the file in.
Looking at the file on the other machine, it comes through as Read Only, ie. if I Get Info on it, it says 'you have custom access' and lists users as Nobody: Read Only; (Unknown): Read Only and Everybody: Read Only. These permission remain like this once the file is copied or moved out of the Drop Box.
I've had a look at the Sharing Prefs on both machines and they are set up to have the admin account as Read and Write and Everyone as Read Only - the Drop box is then set to have the admin account as Read and write and Everyone as Write Only (Drop Box).
The permissions problems happen in either direction, whether copying from machine A to machine B or vice versa.
Can someone help me fix this.
    Thanks

    Easybourne wrote:
Thanks for the tip. Once the other user vacated their Mac last night I ran the commands but...
Unfortunately, I still seem to be having issues with files being 'read only' on the Leopard machine. If I send a file from the Snow Leopard Mac to the Leopard Mac's drop box, it shows up with what looks like read/write access for 'nobody', 'everyone' and 'unknown user', but if I open the file, work on it and try to save via an app's save dialog, it says the file is Read-only. In the words of t'internet: W T F?
I ran your commands on the Snow Leopard machine too, and curiously, if I send a file from the Leopard machine to the Snow's Drop box, I CAN read and write to the file.
One thing that troubles me is that My User name is now listed TWICE in the list of permissions I get (My User Name): Custom Access and (My User Name) Read/Write. That seems odd.
no, that's normal. this happens because of the ACLs.
Something similar is happening on the Leopard machine too.
I created a fresh user account on my Snow Leopard Machine to see what the default permissions should be and I get other entries in the permissions list that aren't present on either of the two Machine's main user accounts. Users such as 'Staff', for example. Frankly, I'm lost.
I've read somewhere that there could be permissions problems on machines where user accounts have been upgraded from Tiger to Leopard as is the case with one of the machines in question.
yes, that could be. we can fix that if necessary.
I've also read that I can do a complete reset of ACLs by using the Reset Password utility on the Leopard installer DVD. Would this be worth a go, and could it cause more problems if it doesn't work?
yes, you can try resettings ACLs on the leopard machine using the leopard install disk. however, the acl reset utility on the leopard disk is somewhat buggy and sets wrong groups on everything it touches. therefore after you are done with it, reboot normally and run the following terminal command
    sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
you'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal.
If you can bear it, could you please help me some more. Thanks very much.

  • NFS export group permissions failing to be applied

I have several NFS shares, mounted on RHEL/Centos 4.5 clients. Only posix permissions are used, no acl. The RHEL client authenticates users through opendirectory on the server.
jim and bob belong to the same group, staff
There are two files on the nfs mount, one belongs to jim, one to bob.
Both files have rw group permissions, and belong to group staff.
On the server, or logged into the server via ssh, jim can edit and save bobs file, since he has write permission for the group.
However on the nfs mount, jim is not given permission to write to bob's file. Jim can delete bob's file though.
Similarly, bob cannot edit jim's file, though he is in the same group.
The group and user names are identical across systems, as are the group and user ids, which is to be expected as they served from the same directory.
This problem has been affecting us for quite a while - from the original clean install of 10.4 and through to the current 10.5.6 server
The issue has already been raised (and archived) at
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1442054&tstart=570
    with no useful result.

Hi frndsss, Seems like we have an enemy in common.. well will keep this space updated if we come across any solutions... thanks..,

  • Copying files from Windows rips out group permissions

    Hi there all,
Having some problems with group permissions being removed from files when data is copied from a Windows OS.
We currently have a network of Macs that are tied to a AD/OD structure.
We have also set a custom umask for each mac defining 002 as the permissions to be written to files.
However, when we connect to a Windows file share using the smb:// protocol and copy files/folders across to the Mac environment the umask permissions are not written correctly.
The User is given full control and the Everyone group is denied access. However, no group permissions are written at all.
We have tried altering the smb.conf file to no effect.
Could anybody shed some light on this annoying problem?
    Many thanks

You have to install this version of samba as Apple have made a complete hash of implementing their own... Another massive fail from the worlds favourite consumer electrics company... Listen to the pro users leaving in droves...

  • Permissions problems with 10.5 client on 10.3 server

A Mac OS X 10.5.2 client is connected to a 10.3.9 Server. When the client saves a new file to the server, permissions are user rw group r all r. The user tries to change group permissions to rw by going to the "Get Info" screen for the file. The dropdowns for permissions are active, but the user's change is ignored. If the user tries to change everyone's permissions to rw, they instead change to No Access, and the user and group permissions disappear completely. The user no longer has access to his own file. That can be reverted, but there is no way for the user to change permissions to group rw.
From the command line, it is possible to change everyone's permissions to rw using chmod, but e.g. chmod g+w filename is ignored.
Ideally, I would like permissions for all files saved to the server to default to rw-rw-r--. I can make that work from a 10.4 client but not from 10.5
Is there any way to change permissions to allow the group to read and write, either by default or on an individual file basis? Is there any way to change everyone's permissions to read and write from the gui? (NB this is only a problem for files on on the server; permissions for local files can be changed just fine.)

we are having a similar issue, we have a 10.3 and 10.4 server on our network. We have set up 2 new Intel machines running 10.5.2 both clean installs and both set the correct permissions when writing to the server.
However we also clean installed on to a G5 and Powerbook, 10.5.2 and both of these machine have the same problem when writing files on to the servers in that the permissions are incorrect (with the same problems that you are experiencing)
