GUI search apps without using a database

What do people use in the way of GUI based search apps (without a DB backend) to search their disks? Or are there none, and you just run Agent Ransack under wine (which works well BTW)?
Searchmonkey used to be an (excellent) Agent Ransack clone but has recently been rewritten and is considerably less powerful than it used to be. I'd like something with the power of AR but linux based.

I know they're not GUI, but you can build your own app if you have too, based on find & grep.

If I'm reading that right, my database is 3.2MB and indexes about 20 GB of data (filenames only). If you have many small files, YMMV,
Edit: I think the CLI excels with repeatable, scriptable tasks. Muscle memory works with the kbd too, aliases and functions can abbreviate a long line to a couple keystrokes.

Looking for simple sample of iphone apps without using Interface Builder

I successfully went through the 'iphone app tutorial' and used Interface Builder, but now want to try creating apps without it.
The UI Catalog sample is too complex, but didn't see anything that just had a view and a button or label.
Ideally I want code that doesn't require any IB usage, but I can't tell if that is possible yet...
Anyone have a link to an easy sample?
Or has anyone created a test app themselves and wouldn't mind posting?
I took a stab at creating one and posted it on the "101" forum, but it would be hard for somebody to try and figure out what I was attempting

How to inactivate the 'Complex Search' button when using Logical Database

I m using Logical Database for a select and you know that for an GET event by default in selection screen it appears some selection fields for every GET event..I manage to hide the ones that don't interest me but I have a little problem: I have a button that's called 'Complex Search' and I don't know how to get rid of this button..
Here is some code:

I think this depends on your data model (relationship between the tables) and how you like to search later.
The optimization begins also with the create index statement (memory clause and storage clause).
If you like me to help I need more information about your hardware, os, datamodel and what kind of searches you will have later.

How can I assign 'Call Contact' in Reminders app without using Siri for it?

Just like the title states, I was wondering how can I assign a click to call a contact in Reminders without using Siri for it.
When I enter a reminder "Call mom" for instance (in the Reminders app), it does not sync with the same contact in my Contact list (for Click to Call), but it does when I use Siri for it. Anyway to resolve that?

If the config the the module you are using doesn't support a certain type of form them you have two options;
- Take a copy of the print program and change it to use the desired type of form
- Create a type of form that is supported and use that to call your form.

Garageband backgroun recording, with synth apps, without using mic, how to?

With yesterday's garageband update i can now record in background, but i'm not able to record using synth apps like animoog, after starting recording (which instrument track is better?) and swirching to synth apps i cannot directly record in GB...how to?

Get yourself a Giganews account, a copy of MacPar Deluxe, iGrabNews or thoth as a newsreader, and download the whole thing every day. I now use iGrabnews because you can simply download an .NZB file from Binsearch.info and get the whole post without loading the whole newsgroup.
You will enter a world of digital media which doesn't get download tracked like peer-to-peer networks. Enjoy.

How to send messages in Facebook app without using Messenger once deleted from iphone?

With all the rumors that the Facebook messenger app can check all your contacts, use your camera etc. Ive decided to remove the messenger app from my iphone. But now when I go into the Facebook App and tap on messages, it is requiring me to download the messenger app again and I no longer want this?
Can this be fixed?

Facebook has moved messages to their own messages app, we are no longer able to send/receive messages without it. You can, however, use the mobile Facebook website in Safari: http://m.facebook.com You'll need to click the "Not now" button when you're prompted to install Facebook Messenger.

Can I create a Mac App without using IB (in mostly C++)

I am a Windows C++ developer wanting to port an application to OSX. I’m currently reading a book on Cocoa / Objective C but have a few questions I’m hoping can be answered here.
I know that I can create a Cocoa application in XCode. However, I have already written a GUI library in C++ for Windows that creates all windows, menus and dialogs programmatically. Can I do this in XCode/Cocoa?
In Visual Studio, I can either create an MFC application, a .NET application or a basic Win32 application. The basic Win32 application is what I have used (together with my library), because it doesn’t contain any Microsoft pre-created classes. I control everything with my library.
Is there a similar project type / way of doing things in Cocoa? Can I programmatically create windows / create menus and so on? Or must I use IB for everything?
My purpose is to expose as a little of the platform specific GUI code as possible. The bulk of my program is written in C++ with no regard for specific GUI issues. But the GUI is complex and I’d rather keep the differences between code bases as small as possible.

My library doesn’t use any MFC, just my own classes that wrap up window creation, usage and so on.
This will definitely make me think twice before trying to port to OSX.
As I understand it (and I could easily be wrong!), you can still use C++ to write OSX apps, just not the GUI/system parts?

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You — not the previous owner — must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
1a. If you don't own another Mac
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the previous owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
1b. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
2. Partition and install OS X
If you see a lock screen when trying to boot from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In thePartition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
3. Other issues
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information.

Calling Web GUI in WDA without using EP(This is a must)

I am developing a WDA Application which has a table display of orders and contracts, I want to call VA02, VA03 and VA01 to manage this list from SAP, I am able to pass this as a URL in LinkToURL and open a new browser window. I am also able to open this in a new View which has IFrame UI element hosting my call and works fine. Now what I need is below.
I need these transactions to open in a new or same window as long as user cannot go back to previous window without canceling or finishing with current transaction (This is met be IFrame approach).
My Biggest problem is IFrame is deprecated (And will be totally obsolete soon) and I do not want to add another dependency of having EP as we are not using EP anywhere and do not want to add for one application. What I need is an alternative to IFrame other than using Iviews from EP.
I hope I am clear enough.....please let me know if further details are needed.

As far as I know there is no other "automatic" way to achieve what you need. So ...
1. use the iFrame as long as it is supported and/or
2. check/track by coding in your WDA application that the user really has done his/her job using the transactions you mentioned in your question and do not allow the user to do anything than restarting these transactions until he/she has done his/her job.
Option 1 is easy and you are finished (at least for the moment); we also use iFrame
Option 2 is cumbersome but safely.

Database functions without using a database

I think I should have posted this here instead of on the
basics are. Anyway here is my problem.
I'm creating a little standalone program that needs to have
database like functions. The program needs to store data fields
like names, titles, etc. that can be modified/customized by the
user. I've done this before in mySQL. But I don't want the user to
have to go to a website or have a database loaded on their
computer. I just want the fields to be stored in some type of
document file that would be in the same folder as the program. Any
suggestions?

There are several options - all require some simple
scripting. To name a couple:
Director can write to text files with the built-in Fileio
xtra, so you could create a delimited text file database.
Director's list functions are perfect for creating a simple
database. You can save lists to files easily using the propSave or
vList xtras - fre IIRC for simple this simple functionality

Can You Update Modern Apps without using the Windows Store?

Our corporate image for Windows 8.1 has the Windows Store app disabled. We have started to see some users are getting prompted to update the built-in apps, like the weather app or the video app. When these users attempt to update, they are taken to the Windows
store where they receive a message that states the store has been disabled by the administrator.
We're using SCCM 2012 R2 CU3. Is it possible to patch these apps through SCCM software updates rather than through the store? Is it possible to leave the store open for updates, but not for new app downloads? What can we do?

The answer is no, When store app need to be updated, it would download a full new version package of the APP, install and replace the old ap. This process do need to login Windows Store to finish the job.
