Had to do a clean install of my G5 with Tiger. Now , do I need to buy Stuff

Is it necessary to buy Stuffit Deluxe if using Tiger. I read lots of replies to other similar questions. But I couldn't figure out if Stuffit is available already on my DVD of Tiger I bought to upgrade from Panther. Or do I need to purchase? Sorry for the redundant. Stuck here. A switcher.

I stand corrected. I was just going to reinstall Classic/Tiger with my iBook G4 install disks and Stuffit Expander is listed if you click the Customize button. I'm not certain if it's on the Tiger disk or not but at least you can access the free download from here; http://my.smithmicro.com/mac/stuffitexpander/index.html

  • How can I do a clean install of Snow Leopard with out losing iLife applications?

I bought my Macbook pro in 2009 and am currently running the Leopard software. I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard, but I do not want to lose my iLife applications.  I lost the DVD's that came with the computer. Is there any way I can do a clean install of Snow Leopard with out losing my iLife applications?
Will a regular installation of Snow Leopard allow the App store to recognize that my computer has iLife and mark it as a purchased item in my account. If it can, then would I be able to do a clean install and re-download the apps for free.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    1. Install Snow Leopard normally; this will keep the applications intact. An actual clean installation involves either erasing the partition or creating a blank one, and neither of those will carry the applications over.
    2. The previous iLife installation won't carry over to the Mac App Store, and the Mac App Store versions are incompatible with Snow Leopard.

  • Clean install - what to do with a messy /user/library

    Hello Community!
I'm planning to upgrade from Lion to Mavericks with a clean install. But I'm worried that the speed-advantages of an clean install will get lost by migrating my current user account/home folder. I migrated my main-user-account from  new Mac OS to new Mac OS for many years now and used/tried a lot of applications. I Think that my main-user-home-library is a mess now - e.g. when I create a new user  with my current Lion - System - this new user is already much faster than my good old main user.
So my question is: should I clean up my current main-user home-library before upgrading? There is the "risk" of deleting to much or not enough.
Or is it better to create a new user and just copy from the old user-library what I need (mail, firefox profile, addressbook....) Do I get with this procedure permission problems?
Any suggestions or opinion is very welcome
    Dietmar

I think you would be better off  doing a clean install, making a new user account, and then carefully moving selected items, not just moving your user account or Library folder over, "cleaned up" or not. It might take a little longer that way, but it's worth it. A clean install avoids a lot of problems.
I made a list of stuff to move over. Many items (at least the ones I use) are stored in iCloud anyway; they sync directly from the iCloud server, which takes care of Contacts, iCloud keychain, and Safari bookmarks.  For mail I just recreate the accounts I have by entering their passwords in Mail.app. Ditto for network settings. I "manually" transferred my iTunes music, ibooks books, my photo library, and my documents from Time Machine. Then reinstalled my apps from clean installers. Trying to "tidy up" my Library or User folder would just be a mess. I don't do clean installs that often, so it's worth the effort.

  • Problem running third party apps in clean installed mavericks HELP....Consol code knowledge needed!

    Yo Guys
I've had some kernel problems with my mid2010 MBP, problems booting, crashes etc. so decided to make a clean install of mavericks, first through the recovery partion, later at the genius bar (they coudnt help me and blamed my toshiba HD (not generic mac) allthough i strongly doubt its the HD since it has passed every test.
still i've no thirdparty apps installed, so when after the clean install i tried to install spotify, it hangs(keeps bouncing in dock), same goes for transmission. This happens the same before and after my clean install, but didnt two weeks ago...WEIRD!
What makes it all weirder is that the spotify install will run and install in safe boot, but it doesnt in normal mode.....
I can add a etrecheck but since its only a mevericks install you guys could guess the results, everything tests perfect......Its like i've MBP with a burnout, no doctor or app or diagnositc can find any flaw, geniusses arent so genius when behind my laptop, but it behaves very ill.....all&all its just super weird.
I hope some of you guys are able to read the code in consol, and maybe shine a light on whats wrong. I see some problem occuring the Kernel mach and libsystem_kernel.dylib) and (libsystem_pthread.dylib) still i've no idea how to fix or what it means...
this is the log of transmission, which usually just runs inside its app.

  • Clean install IDE3 enhanced controller with a wd800jb drive

Well first of all im pretty new at this building pc stuff have done a few older ones and my first step into a first class system......last year i bought my 875p neo fis2r.....and built it up just fine.....my western digital hd failed a month ago been runing a back up and got my new warranty drive and looking at everything i notice and read ..(a little more this time) about hard drive installation and options and and notice i have a IDE3 connector that supports what i see as faster data transfer rates ........so i have my new drive a wd800jb...and would like to use this option if i can ..........is there any special iinstallation process for a clean install and if so i dont find it.....i believe i am sounding rather noobish but i dont want to do it wrong 10 times before i get it right if this will work ........been reading some other posts about turbo mode ultra turbo and i have not had those problems using bios version 1.9 ....i saw the 2.0 but didnt see any benefit for myself
    thanks
    weez

There is no speed advantage to IDE3. It is a marketing gimmick. Save yourself a lot of headaches and put the drive back where it was.
If you really want to give IDE3 a try, you need to enable the Promise controller for SATA in the bios, go into Windows and install the Promise SATA drivers, and then you will be ready to use IDE3.

  • Does a clean install of lion help with problems?

Anybody who has had the litany of problems associated with lion tried an absolute clean install to see if that helps?

But It would be nice if just safari, mail, and the finder would work without giving me the spinning wheel at this time.
How much RAM do you have?  Also, open Activity Monitor, click the System Memory tab and look at your page ins and page outs.  If page outs is more than 1/10 of the page ins, you need more RAM.  I myself was having some beach balls when doing certain demanding things (playing games, using Aperture, etc), and noticed that these values were darn close to equal.  So I upgraded from 4 GB to 8 GB of RAM and all is now good, no matter what I'm doing.
My timemachine backups failed a few days ago, I lost my copy of a working SL backup at that time, so much for diligence.
Yeah, one backup is not nearly enough.  I can't tell you how many times I've seen people who didn't realize their backups were on their way out until the moment they actually needed them, and then it's too late.  Keep one Time Machine backup in the future, and at least one other backup with something like Carbon Copy Cloner.
I do think that it is important to know if others have had success with clean installs because I need to know if it is worth my while. Did you do a clean install?
But what I'm telling you is that it doesn't matter what others say.  Unless you know that the cause of their problems is exactly the same as the cause of your problems, what they say is irrelevant.  There are plenty of people here who have been helped by clean installs, but if all you need is more RAM, a clean install will be a waste of your time.
I did not do a clean install, I just installed Lion right on top of Snow Leopard.  And except for my memory issues, which were overall nonexistent except when (and after) running certain apps, it's been a pretty smooth transition.  But again, that has no bearing on your situation, except to tell you there's nothing inherently problematic about an upgrade install.

  • I performed a clean install, and upgraded to Yosemite. Now iPhoto is gone.

I recently performed a clean install of Yosemite and I am able to install all my old apps expect iPhoto.
It reads, "iPhoto failed to download" "Use the purchases page to try again". Ive ben trying for the past 5 hrs.
I have a good strong internet connection, I am signed in to app store.
This is the only app that will not install.
    Please advise

If a partial download is hanging, have a look at the Launchpad. Is there a progress bar below iPhoto?
Then wait and see, if there is any progress. If not, delete iPhoto from the Launchpad:
Hold down on iphoto until it wiggles and you are seeing a cross in the upper left corner.
    Click the cross to uninstall.
Restart your Mac to clear the App Store caches.
Reload the App Store "Purchased" page by pressing ⌘R.
Then try to download iPhoto again.
Another problem may be a firewall interfering. Disable Little Snitch or similar.
If all fails, try the download again while running the Mac in Safe Mode. That will disable non-standard extensions. See this, on how to start-up in Safe Mode:   Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode

  • Clean Install of Lion. Which Library files do I need to transfer over?

I'm planning to do a clean install of Lion and don't want to use the migration assistant. In other words, I'm copying my Home Folder and will reinstall all of applications and would like to manually transfer relevant files to reduce a lot of the clutter that has built up on my computer over the past months and years.
What home folder library files will be necessary to transfer over? Or, is there a guide online somewhere for this?
    Thanks!

Treat your "clean install" as a new machine and take advantage of the Setup Assistant, as described in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide. You can selectively choose users, data, and apps. BTW, any left-over crud can be ignored. My baseline has its roots in Jaguar and I've never wasted time or effort "cleaning" it. Older items just take up some disk space (with eight partitions, I still have almost 500 GB free), but doesn't affect performance.

  • Clean install of Lion....now how to get back my

I did a clean install of Lion on a bare drive. I prefer this much more than the upgrade from Snow Leopard. There's no lag and the system is speedier by comparison.
I have my full back up of Lion prior to the reinstall on Time Machine. I plugged Time Machine back and tried to reintall some files, but instead is ready to add to the back ups, doesn't prompt to format the drive, and I can't go back to put my photos, music, videos, and etc. I also want to restore Keychains since I have used it over the past year for all my online accounts.
Any suggestions is very much appreciated.

I looked up smiliar questions on the groups here. I managed to retrieve most of my data from my old Lion upgrade from Time Machine. The one thing I can't retrieve is keychain.login from Time Machine which as I understand has all my passwords. I used the Option key to find the user directory, but I can't find it through Time Machine. If worse comes to worse I still have my old Lion back up and I can restore that. I like this cleaner install because as I stated above it's quicker.

  • I'm getting error messages when I try to update my CS5 after I had to do a clean install of Maverick to replace biggie Yosemite on my Mac computer.

Spell check changed buggie to biggie!

It would have useful if you had transcribed the error messages verbatim or provided a screen shot.
The Adobe auto updater was useless before CS6.  Did you download the update you wanted and tried applying it manually?

If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
    etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster, who is not a Windows user).
a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too.

  • I did a system upgrade (clean install) to Snow Leopard. I now have lost all of my Firefox bookmarks. Should they be somewhere in my backup files (on an external drive)? How do I locate them? And, how do I restore them to Firefox in the new system?

Where would the Bookmarks be filed in my system backup? Can I move them to the new system (Internal drive)?

    Hi drnels,
Are you saying you still have access to the backup? If you do, you should take a look at [[Backing up your information]]. It will show you where all of your personal information is stored in Firefox and how you can copy it to a new install.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Clean install on 17" PB with 15" PB discs?

I just got a new MacBook Pro which means my old 17" PowerBook G4 becomes a family computer. It is currently running 10.4.11 and I'd like to do a fresh install. My problem is that I've since lost my original OS X discs but have found 10.4 discs for a 15" powerbook. Would it be possible to use the discs for the 15" PB on my 17" PB or am I better off buying a new copy?

    Hi,
" or am I better off buying a new copy? "
    Most certainly - Yes!
    1. It is illegal to do this.
    2. It will not work.
    Regards.
    Ian.

  • Lenovo v470 - clean install of Windows 7 with Anytime Upgrade

    hi
i just purchased a Lenovo Ideapad V470, and I would like to reinstall the operating system before setting it up.  I hate bloatware, and I would much prefer to start with a new, simple machine.  I purchased the Windows 7 Professional Anytime upgrade, and I'm not sure how to go about this since I am used to having disks, not cards with codes and all that.
I have an OEM copy of a Windows 7 Professional (that I am using for a different computer), but since the Lenovo came loaded with Windows 7 Home, will I be able to use the disk to install Windows 7?  Does the anytime upgrade function as a product key, so I can just type in the product key when i get to that screen?  Is it okay to use any disk that has Windows 7 Professional, since I purchased a unique product key?
    Thanks!

Yes you can complete this task.
First you will insert the OEM disk you have for Windows 7 Pro and go through the regular install process. When it comes time for the product key, now this is the important step, click the "Skip" button. Complete the install like regular.
Once you are in windows, right-click on Computer and select Properties. Scroll to the bottom of the System Properites window and click the Change Product Key link. Here you will enter the key you purchased and can complete the setup process. Enjoy
