Has the AWT-thread just died on anyone?
I was just curious if this has ever happened to anyone but me...
We were running our Swing UI, and the application stopped painting. I did a thread dump of the VM (snippet attached), and noticed that the default 'AWT-EventQueue-0' was missing.

Has anyone verified that jdk1.3.1_19 does not actually have the new Daylight saving time rule mandated by Congress starting 2007 although Sun claims that it does? I tried jdk1.3.1_18 and jdk1.3.1_19. They do not have the new DST rule. I tried jdk1.4.1_11 and it has the new DST rule. Could anyone enlighten me about jdk1.3.1_18(19) if you know about the DST issue with these two JVM's? Thanks.
Alan LeiWe have legacy code running on legacy platforms that cannot be just retired unfortunately. It would be great if we could simply eliminate it overnight. The following is the code that I used to gauge whether the JVM has the new DST rule.

That's in the crashed thread text. Does anyone know what this is about? I actuallly get this same error on three of the four Mac in my staff. It happens consistently when we use Adobe Bridge to browse to a particular folder on my external hard drive. I've copied the contents of that folder to my desktop and I get the same crash.

PeterYes, I've been in touch with Adobe for the past two weeks. They only take it so far, then they just ignore me. The Bridge program is not a separate piece of software. It gets loaded when you install either Adobe InDesign or Adobe Illustrator.

I have a listener which is called on AWT thread, this listener does lot of backend processing by creating another thread, while the processing is going on the AWT thread is blocked causing painting issue.

On a website there was solution to this was -
Create a second thread to dispatch Events, popping them off the SystemEventQueue.
How can I achieve this? need your comments....It is very dangerous to block AWT event dispatch threads. You must never do it. If you need to block your currently active GUI to wait until some process finishes, the common practice is to show modal dialog. This dialog will block the input until the process has finished. After the process finishes, you just hide the dialog.

Hello, I hope you can help me...
I am writting a jdk1.4.1 Swing application that displays a small animation. This animation is processed from within a separate thread. My program makes a call starting this 'animation thread'. For practical reasons my program needs to wait for this thread to die (and thus the full animation to be shown) before it can continue. I am waiting for the animation thread to die using Threads 'join' method. However the problem with this is that I am forcing the GUI thread to wait resulting in the animation being calculated but not displayed. And so... how can I fix this... all I want is to wait until the animation is shown.
What I would like to do is:
1. Start animation;
2. wait intil animation has completed;
3. continue with program.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.Maybe this design could work for you. You divide your program into three parts running in three separate threads.
1. The main thread handling GUI stuff and coordination of the two other threads.
2. A working thread doing most of what the main thread is now doing.
3. The animation thread.
With this division of labour the working thread is waiting for the animation thread to finish (the main GUI thread isn't). The main thread will be free at all times to react to the users input or updating the screen or whatever, while the other two threads are cooperating to produce the animation. -

Thanks!It is not designed to be turned off.. but turning it off will not cause the backup to disappear.. you must take care however to only power it off when the TC disk is not running. Otherwise you will corrupt the backup.

Which carrier has the fastest network??

I live in Sydney so my question only relates to carrier's in Australia. Basically i'm shopping around for a iphone, but i'm not sure if i should go with Telstra, Optus or Vodafone?
Telstra keeps harping on about how is has the fastest 3G network so does anyone have any experience with that or are they all just the same re download speeds?
Thanks in advance!I think it will depend where you are and at what stage the development of those networks is at.
If all networks are saying they have a 3G signal then at a minimum they will all provide a max of 384kbps download speed, as this is what 3G could achieve when launched.
However some networks are upgrading their cellsites to have what is called HSDPA, this is a faster version of 3G which will give you up to 3.6mbps dl speed.
A newer version of this is called HUSPA which will give you up to 7.2mbps dl speed.
The iPhone uses HSDPA, so in answer to your question, the best thing to do is ask the operators as it also depends whether they have upgraded the cell sites in your area.
Telstra may have achieved the highest speeds, but if it's not in your part of the country what is the point!! -

In general (or in ideal world of REST web) the link ID is permanent, i.e. it lasts forever.
As an 3.5 years SDN-er I can say that posts are not removed at all if they are not removed immediately (due to offensive text or illegal requests for commercial SAP materials or similar). But in practice SDN team changed at least twice the format of link URL-s. So be prepared to alter your "favorites" -- the thread/message ID's is stable but links themselves "evolve"

Guess what? After suffering from the worst case of RSS, which led to two logic board replacements, after one palm rest, keyboard and trackpad area replacement due to discoloring, after all that suffering and lost time, after suffering from the huge quantities of heat produced by the MacBook which letd to a crack in the 100% wooden desk I put it on, I now, yes me, get a question marked folder when I start my macBook. Aparently the hard disk just died!
I tried everything, there's no way any application from the MacOS Disc 1 becomes aware of the hard disk's existance now, it's just gone forever.
It really makes one think about the quality of the parts used to make the MacBook and recent Apple hardware.
I know I'll go next week to the Apple rep to ask for the disk replacement that will take some time to get here (and surely they will send me the same 60Gb when they do send it) and then reinstall the whole thing.
I just wonder what will come off next??

My mid-2009 MacBook Pro has just died via a painful (for me) hard drive failure. I backed up a good percentage of files recently but not enough to keep me happy. I need to access the dead drive on the MBP via a 2008 iMac. Best options?
I have ordered a 800 firewire to 800 firewire cable and am hoping to use the target mode option to copy files from the MBP.
Is this possible?

I need an application that will turn off my iPhone on the home screen just by a one click since my power button has sank and is no longer working--anyone have ideas?? I don't like having to use assistive touch and hit three buttons to lock my screen
No such app exisits or can exist. Apple doesn't allow 3rd party apps to access core functions of the phone. Time to get your phone replaced or repaired if assistive touch doesn't needs your needs.

I have been using GRAB to capture screen displays. It has just stopped working since the last OSX Upgrade. Can anyone, please help restore functionality?

I have read the info, and tried to apply it to my problem but the simple program will still not run. It compiles fine but when I type the following in cprompt:

I still get the same error message. I understand that it cannot find the class path, but his explanation of what to do about my problem isn't clear. Or maybe I'm not understanding him correctly.
