HashMap String, ConcurrentHashMap Long, Bool concurrency , out of memory

Need a cache as hashmap<String,ConcurrentHashMap<Long, Boolean>> for 500,000 String keys,
each with ConcurrentHashMap of max size - million for bulk deletes (based on string key), statistics and concurrency??
where total record count of all concurrentHashMaps is about 20 million.
As the application is multi threaded, and we want fastest insert, update, and delete cache the only choice was a concurrentHashMap.
Methods such as put, putIfAbsent, delete are exposed for this cache.
For example, Is the following thread safe?
cache = new HashMap<String, ConcurrentHashMap<Long, Boolean>>
put(T key, value){
ConcurrentHashMap map;
if((map = getConcurrentHashMap(key.getStringValue())) != null){
     synchronized(cache){
          map = new ConcurrentHashMap<Long, Boolean>();
          cache.put(key.getStringValue()), map);
map.put(key.getLongValue(), false)
Even before we loaded a million records, we ran out of space. Why do we have so many, about 16 times the number of concurrent hash maps in heap and this is a bad sign, what other options do we have?

Ofcourse, I do use putIfAbsent, but as there are many concurrent hashmaps, the only time I use synchronized is when I do not find a key without an initialized concurrentHashMap.i did read your post the first time, and it is still incorrect. the point of ConcurrentHashMap is to avoid using synchronized. besides that, your code has a timing hole if more than one thread try to access a new key for the first time. they could get 2 different sub-maps. (not to mention a logic bug). the correct way to lazy-load a ConcurrentMap (assuming that object construction for the values is cheap):
ConcurrentHashMap<Long, Boolean> map;
if((map = getConcurrentHashMap(key.getStringValue())) == null) {
map = new ConcurrentHashMap<Long, Boolean>();
ConcurrentHashMap<Long, Boolean> curMap = cache.putIfAbsebent(key.getStringValue()), map);
if(curMap != null) {
map = curMap;
The good thing about my cache is 99% of the keys (String) are eagerly known. The cache is a HashMap here, so are you suggesting this should also be a ConcurrentHashMap as well, otherwise your cache.putIfAbsent will still require a lock on cache itself, which is what I did below, is there anything wrong here:
public Boolean put(T key){
          String stringKey = key.getStringKey();
          return getLongCache(stringKey).put(key.getLongKey, true);
all ... methods use getLongCache() first
private ConcurrentHashMap<Long, Boolean> getLongCache(
               String stringKey) {
          ConcurrentHashMap<Long, Boolean> longCache;
          if((longCache = cache.get(key.getStringValue())) == null) {
               longCache = putIfAbsentLongCache(key.getStringKey);
          return longCache;
public ConcurrentHashMap<Long, Boolean> putIfAbsentLongCache(
               String stringKey){
          // acquire implicit client side lock as it is different from this lock
          synchronized(cache) {
               ConcurrentHashMap<Long, Boolean> longCache;
               if((longCache = cache.get(stringKey)) == null) {
                    longCache = new ConcurrentHashMap<Long, Boolean>();
                    cache.put(stringKey, longCache);
               return longCache;
     }>
No, the whole idea was to avoid the database and use it as a cache, what other alternatives do I have.i understand that. hope you are using a 64bit jvm on a box with lots o' memory. however, for most normal database scenarios, a good ORM (like hibernate) with the correct caching configured will handle the load you need. you would only need something like this for an extreme scenario, in which case you'll probably need a big box.Yeah, I did not really expect this, that is way too much memory to just setup about half a million concurrentHashMaps. But are there other choices such as writing my own map type?

  • Out of Memory error while builng HTML String from a Large HashMap.

    Hi,
    I am building an HTML string from a large map oject that consits of about 32000 objects using the Transformer class in java. As this HTML string needs to be displayed in the JSP page, the reponse time was too high and also some times it is throwing out of memory error.
    Please let me know how i can implement the concept of building the library tree(folder structure) HTML string for the first set of say 1000 entries and then display in the web page and then detect an onScroll event and handle it in java Script functions and come back and build the tree for the next set of entries in the map and append this string to the previous one and accordingly display it.
    please let me know whether
    1. the suggested solution was the advisable one.
    2. how to build tree(HTML String) for a set of entries in the map while iterating over the map.
    3. How to detect a onScroll event and handle it.
    Note : Handling the events in the JavaScript functions and displaying the tree is now being done using AJAX.
    Thanks for help in Advance,

  • I just noticed that I can no longer select photos out of my finder that are located in my Aperture/Iphoto Library.  I used to be able to attach photos to my gmail out of the aperture library in the finder and for some reason, no longer can.

    I just noticed that I can no longer select photos out of my finder that are located in my Aperture/Iphoto Library.  I used to be able to attach photos to my gmail out of the aperture library in the finder and for some reason, no longer can.
    I can't access these images except to go into the applications.
    Also, I'd like to import my iphoto library into aperture, and move aperture library to an external drive.  I tried the import first, but there wasn't enough space.  Then I tried copying over the aperture library onto the external drive but it failed bc it said file was in use.
    As it is, I only have 50gb left on my imac, and the aperture library is 150gb.  Also, I have over 10k images in both libraries combined and there are tons of duplicates that need to be sorted, and hopefully not messed up because I've organized most of them.
    So in short, I need to know how to do the following:
    -select photos in finder in aperture/iphoto libraries
    -move aperture library to live on external drive
    -import iphoto library into aperture library
    -eliminate dups but maintain organization
    -moving forward i need a better workflow so that I import images from camera, and can organize right away into albums rather than creating projects by default and then creating albums so essentially the photos are in 2 different places, even tho they are referenced
    -live happily ever after
    Thanks in advance for any support you can offer!!

    If you're using apps like iPhoto or Aperture then they replace the Finder for managing your photos. The point is that you use the (many) options available via these apps for the things you want and need to do with the Photos.
    So, simply, you don't select the photos in the Finder. I'll append the supported ways to do this - which are faster and will yield the current version of your Photos - to the end of this post.
    -move aperture library to live on external drive
    Managed or Referenced Library? Managed -
    Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit Aperture
    2. Copy the Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching Aperture. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Referenced -  relocate your Masters first.
    These issues are covered in the Manual and on this forum hundreds of times.
    -import iphoto library into aperture library
    FIle -> Import -> iPhoto Library? Have you done this already? If so are you trying to move the Masters to Aperture from an  iPhoto Library? Or Consolidate them?
    -moving forward i need a better workflow so that I import images from camera, and can organize right away into albums rather than creating projects by default and then creating albums so essentially the photos are in 2 different places, even tho they are referenced
    You can't. Every photo is in a Project.  They’re the basic building blocks of the Library.
    You might want to spend a little time with the manual or the video tutorials. I'm not sure you've grasped the app  you've purchased.
    The following is written for iPhoto, but about 97% works for Aperture too.
    There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto/ APerture:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics. This is what you use to attach your shot to your GMail
    (Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
    You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto/ Aperture.
    If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
    If you want to access the files with iPhoto/ Aperture not running:
    For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the Library from your Services Menu.
    Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
    or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser

  • SelectMany checkbox value-binded with HashMap String,ArrayList

    Hello,
    Someone can help me please?
    Im trying to create a page with a lot of HtmlSelectManyCheckbox, and i need to value-bind then to the same Object in my BackingBean.
    First i attemped to bind all HtmlSelectManyCheckbox with a single ArrayList, but only the last SelectMany had their values inserted on the ArrayList...
    So, now im trying to bind all the HtmlSelectManyCheckbox with a HashMap<String,ArrayList>, because i would have just one object and for each entry I would have the checkboxes that were cheked in a single HtmlSelectManyCheckbox.
    Now my question: there is a way to make this work?
    my code example
    Backing bean
    private HashMap<String, ArrayList> respostaMatrizCheck = new HashMap<String, ArrayList>();
         public HashMap<String, ArrayList> getRespostaMatrizCheck() {
              return respostaMatrizCheck;
         public void setRespostaMatrizCheck(HashMap<String, ArrayList> respostaMatrizCheck) {
              this.respostaMatrizCheck = respostaMatrizCheck;and the bindings
    <h:selectManyCheckbox value="#{backingBean.respostaMatrizCheck['1'] }">
    <h:selectManyCheckbox value="#{backingBean.respostaMatrizCheck['2'] }">And the error message given when i tryed this is the following:
    javax.servlet.ServletException: ValueBinding for UISelectMany must be of type List or Array
    Any help would be welcome.
    Thanks,
    Ferry

    Has anybody solved a problem like this? I am facing the same problem and no response helped me so far.
    Here is the web code:
    <h:selectManyCheckbox value="#{processor.languages.languages1}">
         <f:converter converterId="languageConverter" />
         <f:selectItems value="#{categoryController.allLanguagesAsSelectItems}" />
    </h:selectManyCheckbox>My backing bean "processor" looks like this:
         public Map<String, List<MyObject>> getLanguages() {
              return languagesMap;
         }(The backing bean has no "setLanguages()-method" since I did not need any with Map<String, String> for example.)
    The converter I use creates a "MyObject" instance in its "getAsObject" conversion method.
    I think everything should be okay then but the exception I get after submitting the page is:
    java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: ValueBinding for UISelectMany must be of type List or Array

    Hello Frineds I want to convert from String to Long.
    My String is like str="600 700 250 300" and I want to convert it to long and
    get the total value in to the long variable.like the total of str in long varible should be 1850.
    Thank You

    Maybe this would work?
    StringTokenizer st = new StringTokenizer(yourString, " ");
    long l = 0;
    while(st.hasMoreTokens()) {
        l += Long.parseLong(st.nextToken()).longValue();
    }

  • Input parameter error: "string too long"

    Hi,
    SAP4Rails and SAPNWRFC run really well now, and I have not experienced a problem for a long, long time.
    However, in an RFC I want to use, there is an import parameter (a plain value), which is of the type SYSUUID. The definition of this type says
    <Format - Data Type "RAW" - No. characters "16"> and <Output Characteristics - Output Length "32">. Locally it works with 32 characters of input, but if I try to call the RFC through SAP4Rails, the error "RfcSetByte string too long" occurrs. Any idea, why this could be?
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    Bernd

    This maybe a bug - if you can compile your own sapnwrfc can you try finding the following code:
        if (RSTRING(value)->len > max)
            rb_raise(rb_eRuntimeError, "RfcSetByte string too long: %sn", StringValueCStr(value));
    and changing it to:
    code]
        if (RSTRING(value)->len > max*2)
            rb_raise(rb_eRuntimeError, "RfcSetByte string too long: %s\n", StringValueCStr(value));
    [/code]
    and let me know what effect that has.
    Cheers.

    Sorry Butterbean, but I'm interested in the answer to your question myself.
    I've spent a few hours transfering my library from one computer to another and then find out that my ratings didn't transfer. Like you, I've spent many hours rating my 2000+ songs. I'm sure you have more, nevertheless, I want to find out how to get those ratings. They still show in my iTunes on my laptop but, when I go to the iTunes folder and display the details of at song, no rating is there. If you find out how to get them to display there in the iTunes folder, it seems that would be the key.
    Hope you get your answer soon.

    Agreed theoretically.  But in practise, Apple should review itself:
    1. why the Help has been so useless!  (There is certainly a "Save as", only after you click on the Duplicate...)
    2. why there is no Change List to announce ahead or during beta about the changes and wipe outs (such as dumping the Reminders from Mail!)
    Can Apple give more respects to current application users?

  • Out of memory by writing to files

    Hello,
    I have a very anoying problem.
    I've written a self-learning program that parses a lot of sentences (> 800.000). For the storage of my objects i use hashmap and the program is very quick. It parses 300.000 sentences an hour.
    After the training the data must be hold into a file. But because of the fact that the hashtables are very hugh (they can contain more than 500.000 objects) the writing to the file takes a very long time (more than 6 hours). As a consequence I get always an out of memory exception. (this is certainly the case when there are more processes running on the same machine)
    So now I want to solve the two problems:
    - I want to write the objects faster to file
    - I want to get rid of that memoryexception because the writing to a file takes a lot of memory.
    The program it self uses 600Ram wich is enough if I mustn't write to a file.
    In fact I write those hashmaps in one time to a file using the serialization method.
    this is the code I use for writing:
    ObjectOutputStream out = new ObjectOutputStream(
    new FileOutputStream("test.out"));
    out.writeObject(hashmap);
    out.flush();
    out.close();
    the code for reading is analog:
    ObjectInputStream in = new ObjectInputStream(new FileInputStream("test.dat"));
    in.readObject(hashmap);
    As the writing takes such a long time, the reading from the file would take also many time so now I can't stop the program because when I have to start it again it takes too much time
    Is there anyone who knows who I can write quicklyer to the file and in such a way that it needs less of memory.
    Idem for the reading?
    Thanks a lot
    Sara

    Hi,
    writing objects with ObjectOutputStream is not efficient because it writes every byte to the stream without buffering. The other issue is the generality - it must be able to write any kind of object.
    If your HashMap consist of strings only, it will be faster to write it out as a text file (with BufferedOutputStream). You might write the capacity of the hashmap as the first line and read it by loading the file. Then use this number to set the initial capacity of the new hashmap you ceate.
    If you have questions how to make it - please let me know.
    Regards,
    Martin

    How can this be?
    How is JE ensuring that the limit is not exceeded? Is there a timer (thread) running which once a while checks the memory used and then cleans up ; or is memory usage checked creating a com.sleepycat.je.tree.BIN object?

    I'm not sure whether the profiler is reporting live objects only (referenced) or all objects (including those not yet reclaimed). If the latter, it isn't telling you how much memory is actually referenced by the JE cache.
    Please look at the JE stats to see what the cache usage is, from JE's point of view.
    If you believe there is a bug in JE cache management, you'll need to write a small standalone test to demonstrate it and submit it to us, since we don't know of any such bug. Also note that we'll have difficulty supporting JE 4.0 (without a support contract anyway). Please use JE 5.0, or at least 4.1.
    Eviction occurs as objects are allocated, as well as in background threads. Eviction in background threads and concurrent eviction were greatly improved in JE 4.1.
