Having no luck getting Server working Or at least, I think I am having none

I bought a mac mini preloaded with 10.6 server, it has since been reformatted and had 10.6 reinstalled easily 30 times. I have gotten a business class line form Time Warner, with a static IP. I have gotten Server installed, where I get green lights in Server Admin, but I can not access a web page, nor get out via Safari running on the server.
I have set up the firewall, DNS and the web servers, (all green lighted), no go.
Couple of questions might help clear up some of my confusion:
Do I need a dedicated Domain to access my server? (I have a domain pointing to the server now, I have changed the DNS records on my web host to point the domain to my Static IP).
Should I be able to get out to the internet via the server box? (I am using the ability to surf to a web page as an indicator). I have gone so far as to set the firewall up, but allow any connections to any port.
Am I required to use my broadband providers DNS servers? I have been steered towards OpenDNS and I much prefer them, could Time Warner be blocking that?
I have called Time Warner and they have checked the modem, and they are saying everything is good to that point, the server is my headache (And it is).
If I have the "assistant" run through it's thing, I get good green lights to the ISP but fail at the internet.
If I can get VPN running, can someone theoretically then get in and make the server work? If so, can anyone tell me what I need to do to get VPN running? (It is asking for starting and ending IP's, I have no idea).
If anyone is willing to do the setup, by all means, let me know.

The rules for running a server are a little different from those of a client.
That said it seems like your problems hinge on basic network connectivity, so you should focus on that first before you sorry about getting any of the services running.
The problem, though, is that's somewhat of a catch-22 problem, especially for your first server.
Without knowing more details about your setup I'm going to guess that your current problem hinges on DNS. You will need a DNS server in your LAN to access LAN resources, and by default Mac OS X Server might be trying to use itself for DNS resolution. If you haven't started/configured the DNS server that could fail, and could explain why you can't get to the greater internet.
So start off by enabling the DNS service - you don't need to do any configuration yet - the default should be sufficient for the server to process queries from itself, and may resolve your current problem.
Moving forwards, though, you'll probably want to configure this DNS server with all the details about your LAN network, and point your LAN clients to it. This will forego using GoogleDNS, OpenDNS, etc. (although you could still use them as forwarders, but that's getting ahead of the game).
If your problem isn't DNS then it's probably either an IP address or default router issue. What IP address did you give the server? are you sure it's valid for your LAN? What default router address did you specify? Is that the address of your Time Warner router? something else?
The above notwithstanding, I'll get to your specific questions:
Do I need a dedicated Domain to access my server?
No, but it's sometimes useful, depending on what you want your server to do.
I have a domain pointing to the server now, I have changed the DNS records on my web host to point the domain to my Static IP
I wouldn't do this until your server is ready. There's no reason for public users to get to your server at this point. Running your own DNS server in your LAN is sufficient for your current needs.
Should I be able to get out to the internet via the server box? (I am using the ability to surf to a web page as an indicator).
Yes, if your IP address, default router and DNS server addresses are all valid (see above)
I have gone so far as to set the firewall up, but allow any connections to any port.
If you're using private IP addresses in your LAN, turn off the firewall.
Am I required to use my broadband providers DNS servers?
On the contrary, in most cases you are required to NOT use your broadband provider's DNS servers.
I have been steered towards OpenDNS and I much prefer them, could Time Warner be blocking that?
Unlikely. See above.
If I have the "assistant" run through it's thing, I get good green lights to the ISP but fail at the internet.
This hints at DNS.
If I can get VPN running, can someone theoretically then get in and make the server work?
Sure, although you should be clear about what it is you want someone to do. Even for an experienced admin, setting up a server could be a 5 minute job, or a lifetime's journey depending on what it is you want your server to do.
If so, can anyone tell me what I need to do to get VPN running? (It is asking for starting and ending IP's, I have no idea).
Well, if you're planning on using the VPN service built into Mac OS X Server then you need to get this machine talking to the internet... It's hard to do that remotely

  • My Facebook acct. has been hacked and now it's spreading to other parts of Firefox 3.6. I'm getting problems worked out with FB but think I need to reload Firefox 3.6.17 for my Mac OSX.4. Can you help me/have other advice?

When I try to login to FB now, I get a website that takes over Firefox - WebSpy, or something like that. I already changed my email passwords. When WebSpy takes over, I have to quit Firefox. I'm not using FB right now, until I get this sorted out. It was sending out bogus messages to all my friends.

Have you tried opening them in a Finder window? Also, you might boot to your Install DVD and launch Disc Utility to verify and repair both permissions and your drive.
Sounds strange. I also have the Lacie 500G - partitioned, but with one being FAT 32 ...works fine for me.

Having tried all the ways possible to get it working, contact your retailer again and politely tell them they did not yet satisfactorily resolve your trouble.  Their Apple-Authorized Service Provider will be able to repair it.

I run Watchguard mobile VPN to connect to my work network, but the only way it runs is in 32 bit mode, I am not having luck getting Lion to boot in 32 bit mode, what should I do?

You can try but quite frankly I've not seen anyone done this before
Restart your machine while pressing 3 and 2 to force it to run in 32bit mode(this was a practice in Snow Leopard)
if you ask me, my recommendation is to get Watchguard update its software to 64bit. this is the REAL solid solution for your problem. Apple does not adjust to 3rd party softwares, its the other way around.
I meant "Lion runs in 64bit mode"

  • APEX Oracle 11g HTTP Server - Cannot get SSL working

I have installed APEX on Oracle 11g with the Oracle HTTP Server on MS Windows server.
Data base up and running, APEX up an running.
All works as expected on port 7777
When I try 4443 I get error message re self signed certificate by Oracle, but if I click through error message I get an https connection.
I want to replace default cert with a locally signed cert, and get SSL working on 4443, then switch to port 443.
I have used the Oracle Wallet manager, generated a CSR, had this signed by my corproate CA, and installed the corporate CA cert and the newly signed server cert into the wallet (with Auto Login Set) and saved it in:
    D:\orahttp\Oracle_WT1\instances\apex\config\OHS\ohs1\keystores\infosec2wallet
This creates two files: ewallet.p12 and cwallet.sso
I then manually add the group/users "SYSTEM" and "Administrators" to these two files to match the security tab on the default wallet.
I T then go to the ssl.conf file located at:
    D:\orahttp\Oracle_WT\instances\apex\config\OHS\ohs1\ssl.conf
    and changed the entry:
    #SSLWallet "${ORACLE_INSTANCE}/config/${COMPONENT_TYPE}/${COMPONENT_NAME}/keystores/default"
    SSLWallet "${ORACLE_INSTANCE}/config/${COMPONENT_TYPE}/${COMPONENT_NAME}/keystores/infosec2wallet"
I then stop and start the Oracle HTTP Server - ohs1 from the start menu.
Then I try to connect from my desk top machine using the following URL:
    https://us-pghinfosec2.ariba.com:4443/pls/apex/f?p=101:1:
I get the clasic MS IE Message:

I am at a loss as to what to do. It acts like Oracle HTTP can not open my wallet.
I suspect it needs the password to the wallet but I cannot find any place to specify the password, and Auto Login should have addressed that issue.

You should have mentioned this additional information in the original question itself.

<li>Oracle HTTP Server running on a Windows 2003 server and Oracle Database running on Sun Solaris machine. As long as [url http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E37097_01/doc/install.42/e35123/otn_install.htm#BHAFJJDA]dads.conf is configured correctly there should not be a problem with this.

  • How do I get Apache web server working ...

How do I get Apache web server working on my MacBook Pro, which is running Leopard 10.5.8?
When I enter 'http://localhost/~username/' (without the quote marks) as a URL in my Firefox browser on the MacBook, I do not see any result at all(!). I do have Web Sharing on in System Preferences on that machine. But the browser does nothing whatever for that URL ...
On my other computer, an iMac running Leopard 10.5.8, when I enter 'http://localhost/~username/' I see the default "Your Website Here" page. That same default page is in fact the index.html file I expect to see on the MacBook Pro. But it isn't getting invoked for some reason. Nothing is happening ...
When on the iMac I try 'http://10.0.1.18/~username/' (10.0.1.18 is the local IP address I see under 'Web Sharing: On' on the MacBook) I get "Unable to connect: Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 10.0.1.18."
When on the MacBook I try 'http://10.0.1.5/~username/' (10.0.1.5 is the local IP address I see under 'Web Sharing: On' on the MacBook) I see the default "Your Website Here" page.
It is the same on my iPhone: Using the same local IP addresses and usernames, Safari can see the index.html page on my iMac but not on my MacBook.
It looks as if Apache is not working on the MacBook, while on the iMac it works fine.
On the MacBook I can see (after I use 'defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE' in Terminal) a /private/etc/apache2/ directory with what look to be(?) the usual contents. So it looks like Apache is duly installed, as far as I can tell.
On the MacBook I don't see a file at /private/var/log/apache2/error_log, which is the location for 'ErrorLog' given in the httpd.conf file.
That about exhausts my understanding of how to get a handle on my problem.
Any advice or suggestions from those who have more expertise with Apache will be much appreciated ...

Okai, so we are getting somewhere, but not quit there yet :-)
I opened the Kenneth.conf file using the command: vi Kenneth.conf
    This is what it said:
    <Directory "/Users/Kenneth/Sites/">
    Options Indexes Multiviews
    AllowOverride AuthConfig Limit
    Order allow,deny
    Allow from all
    </Directory>
    "Kenneth.conf" [readonly] 6L, 139C
I therefore changed the AllowOverride from AuthConfig Limit to None, which was the only difference from what you posted above. Something did change, when I tried to open XAMPP it prompted me a password, but Apache still wont start :-/

Does any one have any luck getting screen sharing to work in Skype 2.x?

The current skype app works (makes calls) with iphone, ipod touch as well as the current ipad, per the description of the app. The ipad is obviously not going to be able to make video calls, but I know the iphone 4 can make video calls to a PC through skype. Works really well too. Im assuming that with the ipad 2 you should be able to make video calls as you can with iphone / ipod touch.

  • How can I get iCal working for me? Is Server the way??? Really need help he

    Hi,
I made an earlier post, but nobody wanted to reply Here goes again.
New photography business. My wife uses a MacPro tower, I use a MacBook Pro, and we have a spare Powerbook sitting doing nothing.
    1. We want to access and edit the same iCal calendar.
    2. We want to be able to put it online - but not critical as yet.
    3. We want to sync 2 iPhones.
So, if money were not the issue, what is the ideal solution? Is it putting Leopard Server on one of the machines? (would the old PowerBook do the job in the background?)
Is CalDAV the way to go, something I know absolutely nothing about? I suppose I am so confused about which direction to head in I am hoping someone will point me.
I will happily get Server if that is better, but is it?
Looking forward to an enlightening reply.
    Hugh

If money were no object, then an Xserve with it's bundled Mac OS X Server unlimited would be the way to go. But, in the server genre, an intel-powered Mac mini with Mac OS X Server 10 client is far more cost effective. In combination with SoftRaid, a matching external FireWire or USB-2 external drive in mirrored mode, a spare power adapter, and spare 2.5 and 3.5 bare drives matching these creates an almost bulletproof but inexpensive server setup.
You might even find the Xserve solution particularly compelling as a storage device for your digital still photographs. It's possible to run Mac OS X Server on your PoweBook in all likelihood, but I would not recommend it.
On the other hand, BusySync running on your PowerBook would provide all of the 'calendar service' you might possibly need for shared and published calendars. The developers of BusySync are smart and responsive, and it's a great piece of software.

  • Static NAT pass-through; can not get to work

I am not having any luck getting a static NAT pass-through to work.
BM3.8/NW6.5 all patched to the latest patches (no betas). IPFLT is NOT
    loaded.
My internal network on one LAN all have 10.100.xxx.xxx private addresses.
    Dynamic NAT works great.
I have secondary public IP addresses bound to my public NIC. Static NAT
mapping between the secondary public IP addresses and the couple of
individual private addresses work just fine. In other words, all has been
    working fine.
I need to give one of those internal resources its public IP address
(change it's private to its public).
OK, I went into the NAT table and changed the proper public <-> private to
public <-> public (identical addresses). I changed the internal computer
to it's public address/mask with the same default gateway the server is
using. The internal computer can now only ping itself; can't even ping
it's default gateway. I did reinitialize, and also restarted. I can not
get the pass-through connection to work.
Any thoughts will be well received.

  • How can I make the web server work on port 80 and not 443. I can only access my website using https.

On a Mac Mini server with OS X Lion 10.7.2, I am unalbe to get the web server working on port 80. It switches automatically to port 443 (https).
This situation complicates the access to FileMaker Web publishing, as I don't want my clients having to use https.
How can I change that? Does anyone know?
    Thanks for any reply

in the server: I checked the SSL certificate. Tried several configuration.
    Well, that's a problem for a start.
Your port 80 connection should NOT use SSL. Port 80 is the standard HTTP port, not HTTPS and most applications that connect to port 80 will not expect to use SSL
If you want to run a site under both HTTP and HTTPS then you create two sites, one on port 80 without SSL and one on port 443 with SSL

  • I have a set of cloned APEX servers, how should I get them working?

Hey there, I have been asked to configure a set of servers which are clones of an existing APEX environment and get them working as a separate development environment. This APEX setup has three servers which are all running RedHat Linux: a single sign on server, a web server, and a database server. I am having some trouble finding all the configuration files that I need to update with the new ipaddresses and hosts names in order to get the new servers to talk to each-other again. For example, the cloned web server seems to still be trying to connect to the original database server. When I start opmnctl, it doesn't throw any errors even if the cloned database server's listener isn't running.
I've updated the ssl.conf, httpd.conf, and targets.xml files on the web and sso servers, and the TNSnames.ora and Listener.ora files on the database server. I also updated the generic linux hosts and networking files on both. Can anyone think of anything that I'm missing?

    Hi user8245974,
You may want to take a look at the dads.conf file, which should be where your Web server is configured. There most likely is a connect string defined in there.

  • Cannot get a working certificate on the iPhone to get the iPhone working

Hi, We've tried just about everything to get the iPhone working with our Exchange server to push email via active sync. We are using our own self signed certificates, not ones from Verisign for example, and we are using the IP Config Utility 2.0 on Windows XP PC to import the certificates. We have EAS setup on Exchange 2007. We generated the config for the user and emailed the config to a personal user account which we are able to access via the iPhone. We opened the email and double clicked the config file which then installs the profile to the iPhone but we get error 403 when we try and sync email. The iPhone doesn't appear to be presenting the personal certificate to the excchange server correctly which is causing the 403 error.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so do you have a workaround or public fix for it. We are trying to avoid having to go to a certificate authority.
    Appreciate any feedback.

Objective: Get a **** personal certificate working on the stupid iPhone
    Update: Settings
1). Exchange Management Console - Under client access role - Exchange Active Sync - Authentication - basic authentication is checked, ignore client certificates is checked
2). Under IIS Manager - Default Web Site - Microsoft Server Active Sync - Directory Security - Secure Comms - Require Secure cannel is checked, ignore client certificates is checked
    3. Server certificate is installed onto the exchange server - issued by our own certificate authority/server
4). iPhone installed with root certifcate from the certificate server and the exchange certificate which was issued by the certificate server.
Under the above configuration we can get email working fine on the iPhone. Its synced correctly with exchange and able to receive and send email. Both the root and server certificates were installed to the iPhone using the iPCU.
    Ok then, second test
    Settings:
    2 setting changes only applied:
1). Under IIS Manager - set it to require client certificates
2). On the iPhone removed the old profile - updated the profile to include a client certificate issued from the same certificate server that the exhcnage server certificate was issued from. So now there are 3 certificates on the iPhone (the root cert, the exchange server cert and the client cert). NOTE: When viewing the profile certificates on the iPhone the issued by field on the personal certificate is blank, opening it up shows no details. The certificate is a .pfx certificate so this explains why the details cant be viewed.
On re-attempting to sync email we get the 403.7.5 error (client requires a certificate) even though we put one on the phone. It looks like the client certificate either is not being passed through. I've read many forums indicating this issue in that Safari on the iPhone doesn't support client certificates. I've also read that a reverse proxy might be a work around - has anyone tried this?
It doesn't matter whether we use our own client certificate or a client certificate signed by Verisign, both end up with the same result.
Does anyone have an answer yet - has Apple got their act together yet and provided a resolution to this problem?
Can anyone explain to me exactly how the certificate authentication process works. For example we couldn't get it working with "ignore Client Certificates" at first when we just put the exchange server certificate on the iPhone. We had to put the Root CA certificate on the iPhone also???
If anyone can help that'd be great, any help at all at this stage would be good.
    Cheers.
