  • Setting up XServe out of the box for Video

Our station just purchased an XServe RAID 1TB for storage of a documentary shot on HDCAM. I've connected the HDCAM deck to a Kona 3 breakout box and everything seems to work fine. I have the XServe connected by fiber channel, but not Ethernet.
I open Disk Utility to set up a RAID and it won't let me "Create" it. The RAID Admin Utility doesn't show the XServe either.
I waited a day for the XServe to finish its initial drive indexing (although there wasn't any pop-up or warning saying it was in the process of indexing drives).
I am just a "video" guy...so I'm certain I am missing key information about setting up a RAID. Can anyone talk me through the set up? Does the Ethernet cable make a difference?
The end use will be just to store video for this project. The XServe will not be networked until we add drives next year.
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Kevin

    Kevin,
I believe you're talking about Xserve RAID, not Xserve.
The only way you can manage/monitor Xserve RAID is over Ethernet, using the RAID Admin application.
At any rate, when you first plug in Xserve RAID it will do a surface scan of the disks -- this takes about 36 hours. The unit is usable during this time. You plug it in to the fibre channel card in your machine (G5? Must be if you got a PCI-Express Kona 3 card in there), and go to Disk Utility, and you should see a big volume (actually, when you boot you should get a "you have inserted a volume that OS X cannot read... format it?" dialog). From there you can initialize it... it will be ~700 GB in size (a 1 TB XSR comes set up as RAID 5 from Apple which loses 250 GB of space to parity, and thus it's about 700 GB). No need to do RAID in Disk Utility... the RAID is done in hardware inside the Xserve RAID itself.
So format it, and then just treat it like a very big firewire hard drive. The RAID with 4 drives cannot handle uncompressed SD, but you should be able to capture HDV or DVDPRO HD or uncompressed SD to it. If you want to capture uncompressed HD you need 14 drives in the RAID for the bandwidth.

  • Just started up my Mac Mini out of the box, using a USB windows keyboard, it will not recognize letters so I am unable to enter serial number.  Anything I can do to get the mini mac right out of the box to recognize the windows keyboard?

Just started up my Mac Mini out of the box, using a USB windows keyboard, it will not recognize letters so I am unable to enter serial number.  Anything I can do to get the mini mac right out of the box to recognize the windows keyboard?  Do I have to buy an Apple Keyboard to get it to work right out of the box?

Is this a normal USB keyboard or is there anything specialized about it? Does this keyboard require you to install any special software to use it on a Windows box? Or is it usually a plug & play keyboard?
Normally if a Mac does not recognize a keyboard it asks you to press certain keys to identify the keyboard. What is happening on screen with this keyboard? What serial number are you referring to?

Why does my brand new MacBook pro have 13 cycles on the battery right out of the box? Shouldn't it have 0 because it's brand new.

Yes it should have 0.  I would return it, that means that the battery has already went through 13 full cycles.  Perhaps they accidentally resold a returned one as new.

  • Having trouble setting up email accounts in the mail app?

    Hi Apple community,
I am having trouble setting up my email accounts with the osX mail application. I have two accounts, an outlook and my college email through google. When I try to add the outlook account the prompt says that it cannot connect to the server and when I try my college mail i get the following prompt.
"Trying to log in to the Exchange server “autodiscover-s.outlook.com” failed. Make sure the email address and password you entered are correct, then click Continue."
Please note that my college account is run by gmail and ends in murraystate.edu
    Thanks, Will.

    Hey will,
okay for your college email. Heres what you do.
Try adding your email and wait for the message to come up
Trying to log in to the Exchange server “autodiscover-s.outlook.com” failed. Make sure the email address and password you entered are correct, then click Continue."
Once it does, you will notice 2 extra boxes One says username and the other password. You will notice that the username will not have @murraystate.edu
Add this and continue and this should now be added as an email account and should be able to receive emails as normal.
For your outlook emails, I would recommend using the following article to set it up. It is fairly straightforward.

  • LaserJet CP2025dn - Tray 1 Jammed - RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX

I just bought a LaserJet CP2025dn. I followed the set-up instructions through Step 7, and when I powered up the printer, the screen said "Tray 1 jammed, clear jam then press OK" EVEN THOUGH THE THING HAS NEVER BEEN USED. i followed the instructions for clearing a jam, to no avail.
This is not a very promising introduction to HP products. In fact I'm mad as you-know-what.
Any suggestions on how to clear a built-jammed Tray 1 on a printer that has never been used?

    Hey Adam,
Just follow the instructions I provided in your other topic regarding this. Rad is right, as I said in my instructions, it is VERY important to calibrate the battery. Also, the program called Maintenance that I told you to download that, you need to be sure to check the boxes for: Repair Permissions, Execute Maintenance Scripts, Optimize the system - Complete Optimization, ALL of the cleaning boxes, and ALL of the reset boxes except for Reset Spotlight. You should run this application at least once a month.
Be sure you keep the MacBook box and all of the packaging in case you need to return or exchange it for any reason. Once you have done this, and the other things that I suggested in the other topic, have fun! I'm sure you will love verything about your new MacBook, and I'm sure you will also have a lot of questions. I think you know where to come to get those answered
    Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, I'm a freshmen in High School so I will be around here for a while to answer all of your questions...

  • G580 can't backup right out of the box. Not enough space

I recently aquired a G580 with the i5 processer, 500gb hard drive and  Win8. I see the lenovo center is telling me to do a backup and since I just set it all up the way I wanted I figured it's a good idea anyway. I follow the instructions and it automatically makes a path to the D drive. I click backup and it say's there isn't enough space?
Seems my hard drive was partitioned from the factory with only a 25gb (24.9 to be exact) D drive. Now the only thing on the D drive is an applications folder with nortons and a driver folder with what looks to be backups of the OEM drivers. All this takes up 2gb of space. The backup is saying it needs 25.2 gb. So even without those files on the D drive I still wouldn't be able to make a backup.
I am reading the partitioning thread but I'm lost really. Plus I don't really want to be messing with partitions on a brand new machine out of the box. It seems I might have too though. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,
Let me suggest a few things. I guess that will clarify few of the doubts.
    1. The factory default image is saved on the OEM partition (hidden). This can be used through One Key recovery for loading factory defaults.
    2. Refer to this link on creating a back up of factory default image. This can be used to get Windows back in case of hard drive failure or replacement. Applies to Ideapads also. Link
    3. The option of creating Backup using the One Key Recovery software is for the current system image and not the factory default image. Hence the size will vary from user to user and I guess the D drive will not be sufficient for this. Anyhow, as you mentioned, creating the backup on external drive makes more sense.
Hope I was able to clarify few things.

  • Brand New 30g Video Ipod...dead right out of the box

So I take my new ipod out of the box and it wont turn on. I plug it up to the outlet charger and the screen lights up but says nothing and does nothing. It makes a little humming noise and gets very very hot also. Plugging it up to computer hasn't helped, it doesn't even light up with it. Anyone have any ideas?

    Welcome to Discussions!
Have you tried resetting the iPod by holding the Menu and Center buttons?
If that doesn't change anything, it sounds like you received a defective iPod.
You can 1) return it to the store or 2)fill out a service request here: http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod

  • Why during setup of mx922 I get a 6000 and a 6001 error message right out of the box

I just purchased a MX922 and out of the box I get a 6000 error message why?

I'm glad I was able to help.  I kind of wish mine hadn't worked because I ended up being one of the "lucky" individuals where my phone didn't restore from the backup and I lost all of my contacts, calendar appts, notes, etc.  It took me an extra 2 hrs last night to rebuild the next month worth of appts and try to rebuild my contact list from my yahoo contacts.  Oh well.  I will be getting an android at my next upgrade.  I'm tired of all of the BS that comes with owning an iPhone.

  • Right out of the box...and it KEEPS SHUTTING DOWN!! Help!!

I received my brand new iMac this afternoon and plugged it in. It was working fine for about two hours, now all of the sudden, the thing will not stop shutting down and powering up. It is almost as if I am jiggling power source on and off, like a flicker, and I am not even touching it. I tried troubleshooting with the cosmetic ring around the power connector - no dice, the computer keeps turning on and off like it's posessed. There is plenty of slack on the power cord so it's not being pulled. I am afraid plug the system in...all that shutting down and powering up can't be good for the system. What should I do?
    IMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Welcome to the discussions!
If you have checked that the power plug is firmly seated and confirmed that it is, then the only thing to do is to call Apple or take it in.
If there is a problem with the power supply or logic board, Apple should replace the entire unit. No new Mac fresh out of the box should require repairs.

  • Are there Apple translated (i18n) resource files ("out-of-the-box") for Objective C?  In the SDK?

    Hello, experts:
From previous experience, I know that both Adobe and Oracle provide some "out-of-the-box" translations for their respective UI language.  I'm new to Apple development and Objective C and looking to determine if any such localization support is provided by Apple for Objective C.  Hint:  Thinking it might be either included in the SDK or downloadable but I could not find any such information.  Does Apple provide any translated resources?
Thank you in advance for your help.

To follow up on Tom's advice, if you go directly to the downloads directory:
    https://developer.apple.com/internationalization/downloads/
There are resource files meant to be used by the old AppleGlot that provide a lot of Apple's translations.

  • I can't believe this is how the iPhone is right out of the box.

Seriously. I have never purchased anything that worked so well, and did exactly what it was advertised to do immediately. I did have the activation problems that others did the first night, but since then, wow. It's amazing to think that many other features are coming down the road. Apple really deserves a thumbs up for this one. I have been an apple follower for a while, and the rev a thing is usually pretty crappy....but they knocked it out of the park with this one.. Couldn't be happier. (yes, no point to this thread, but why not post something positive for a change!)

I totally agree with you....i love my iPhone.....i have no complaints....this is truly a magnificent product! I mean im on my iPhone right now! This is just freakin crazy!

  • IPhone 5 scrapes, scratches, and scuffs right out of the box

Today i was a bit scared of opening 2 shiny new iPhone 5's. i had heard various reports of damaged iphone 5's due to the recent foxconn riot. And sure enough, both were damaged. I would just like to find out if anyone has an idea if returns are accepted. I did purchase them through Verizon if that helps. Thank you for your time.

I thought I am the only one who has this problem. I found 4 dent on the bevel edges of my Iphone. The reason it is obvious because it shows the shiny aluminum underneath the coating. When I brought it back in for an exchange, the first thing they ask me was "did you drop it?". I told them if I drop it the damage would be much bigger than the dents that I showed them. I thought that they were not very sensitive about the feeling of the customer who just had the phone for less than 2 hour from UPS. It look as if they have a problem with the process. I got the phone exchanged but did not like the look on the face of the customer associate. Will not buy another Iphone again.
