HELP FIREWIRE TO USB

Hey all - I have an old external hard drive with FIRE WIRE ports only (has all my songs ) I now have the Macbook Air with USB Ports only!!! HOW DO I GET MY SONGS!!!! THANKS!!!

I have never heard of a USB to Firewire converter so I would say you have a limited set of options.
If you can easily remove the hard drive from its current enclosure you could purchase a USB to XXX adapter such as:
http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-USB-DSC5-3-5-Inch-Converter-Adapter/dp/B000HJ99DI/ ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312878326&sr=8-1
You could purchase an inexpensive hard disk enclosure with multiple i/o options for your current drive and mount it in that enclosure. Search amazon.com for examples.
If your MBA is a 2011 model with Thunderbolt you could wait until Sonnet releases their Thunderbolt to FW800 adaptor--rumored to be the end of September.  No pricing is available yet:
http://www.sonnettech.com/news/nab2011/
You could also purchase a 2nd hard drive with a USB interface that has enough capacity to hold all of your data and have a friend with Firewire copy it for you.

  • Hello, I have a Sony GV D300E mini DV editing deck.MY imac latest I7 model does not see it when I plug it in via firewire to usb, any help please.

My iMAC i7 will not see the device, it is from firewire to usb.
    Any help please.

The connection on the player is firewire
    You need the following:
    Apple Thunderbolt - Firewire adapter
4-pin to 9-pin Firewire cable like this one
    No software drivers are needed.
No icon will appear on your Mac desktop when the deck is connected.  You need to use video capture software such as iMovie, Final Cut, etc. in order to "see" and use your Firewire deck. (I believe QuickTime Player will also "see" your deck and allow playback.)   You will probably have to use the manual controls on the deck to control actual playback start & stop.
I have recently bought a cable, firewire one end and USB on the other
Hard to believe there is such a cable.  If there is such a cable, it's a scam.  Firewire and USB are totally different, electrically and protocol-wise.  Even if there is such a cable, it will not work for connecting your miniDV player to a Mac.   miniDV (video) has always been a Firewire-based connection. Sony calls Firewire "i.Link"

  • Seriously I need help!! PC cant detect ipod through firewire or usb.

It's been months since my 3rd gen 20 GB ipod stopped working correctly. After I installed the new updater for my (03-23-2006) computer, my pc cant detect the ipod AT ALL!!! It's not showing in itunes, not showing up in the updater, and it's not showing up in "My Computer". I plug it in the usb slots, it does NOTHING. Plug it through firewire... all it does is just charges up and that's it.
I tried unistalling and reinstalling old versions of the updater and itunes but even that's not working. My ipod use to work fine by either connecting the ipod through a firewire or USB. Now, NONE of the usb or firewire slots (back and front) wont detect it.
I did the 5 R's hundreds of times and placed it in disk hard trying to see if any of the slots would detect it but no luck!! I also reset the ipod in every usb and firewire slot but no luck. I alse disable my norton antivirus but that didnt help either. There's nothing wrong with the usb or firewire cables because they both worked with my friend's ipod.
I even drove over 5 miles to the nearest apple store to see if they can help and their macs couldnt detect the ipod, even though my ipod was formated for win. They couldnt help me at all.
    I've must of done EVERYTHING!!
    Someone please help!!!
3rd gen 20 GB   Windows XP

My girlfriends 3rd gen 20G Ipod is having similar problems. If I connect it via USB, the PC doesn't recognise it, and if I connect it via Firewire, I get a blue screen with ntfs.sys are the named culprit.
I've tried it on two differnet PCs now with the same results (both with latest iTunes and update software on them).
I've still got a 3rd gen 40G iPod thats working fine with both PCs, so im starting to think it's a problem with the disk in the iPod though. Although it's usable, theres some strange clicking noises when I connect it (before the crash...), and it tends to always skip the first song in a playlist/album etc and only play the second one.

  • FireWire vs USB at hibernate mode

Well I have the following task/issue. I have iMac and installed SamrtSleep 3rd party utility. It put my IMac in hibernate mode once system goes sleep. I have made for UPS setup so when power is off iMac will hibernate.
The problem is I have several external hard drives - FireWire and USB. Anytime I wakeup after hibernate the USB drives is unplugged and plugged again (software mode) and it breaks everything (if any) what was busy with this external drive and Not Properly Ejected warning appear. For example I have image file on external USB mounted before sleep. After wakeup it's unmounted like if I will just switch hard disk off while running.
However my FireWire works just fine the same way like internal hard drive. I have virtual machine  image file on FireWire disk. I open and run it. Than go to hibernate and wakeup. The system stays same place where it was before sleep. Noting was unmounted/unplugged. I was able to continue work on Mac OS as well as in same place in virtual machine.
First I was looking for help here and All Over The Google but all issues is around how to unmount all external drives before sleep. But I don't need to unmount them I need hibernate them together with all system.
Also when wakeup my virtual machine notice me where to plug many USB devices (it always ask when new one is connected). It means when Mac OS wakeup from hibernate it "break" all USB connections however nothing happens with FireWire.
My question so far if its possible to put USB in some mode when it will not "break" on wakeup? Or maybe any other solution to hibernate USB disks.

Ok nobody asnwer maybe it's not clear and too many text. I will ask more easy way.
Why Mac OS reconnecting all USB devices after deep sleep?

  • FireWire to USB adaptor

Hello again. I posted earlier about problems with connecting a FireWire external HD to my new MBA, which only has USB ports. I searched some but couldn't really find a FireWire to USB adaptor cable although I read that they may have them at best buy.
Has anyone purchased such a cable for Mac and, if so, could you tell me who made it and where you purchased it.
    Thanks for any help.

OK, thanks. I did a lot of time researching and found some articles indicating that a couple of cable-making companies made such a thing (i.e., sima and tripp lite). Upon searching their sites and sending emails, neither of them sold such a product. I've read through my search that Apple may be eventually coming up with such a cable but who knows.
here is my issue, however, in case either of you have thoughts on this. I just posted it on the ti book forum:
hi there. I have my Itunes library downloaded on my ti book g4. I want to transfer it to the new macbook air I just purchased. How would I go about doing this? Could I just buy a usb cable and hook them up and use the ti book as an external drive or would it be more involved due to having different versions of usb (i.e., 2.0 usb on air and ? on the 7 year old ti book). The external drive I have only has firewire and I can't find a firewire-usb cable anywhere. If I could, then I'd just connect the external hd to my new mac air and do the transfer.
    Any help would be appreciated.
So, maybe I've got a 'work-around' here but have questions about whether an old ti g4 powerbook and mac air could connect some way.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    thank you

  • Firewire and USB ports not recognizing devices

All of a sudden, some of our MacBooks don't recognize firewire and usb devices. It's weird, but after about a week, one of the MacBooks suddenly started recognizing a video camera, again, but it's troubling because my users need to be able to import movies and pictures from digital devices.
We ran the updates, and it did not help. We have been using these devices with our MacBooks for over a year, and this happened at the worst possible time. Any ideas?
I've tried both self- and AC-powered devices, rebooted, powered off and on, made sure everything is plugged in, etc.

    Try Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • Firewire and USB Transfer Crashing

    Can anyone help,
I have a PowerBook G4 running Tiger 10.4.11, Almost everytime I decide to do a large amount of transfering via Firewire or USB it seems to crash and I have to restart the machine, sometimes all I do is plug my iPod Touch in, to sync and it crashes. Has anyone else had this problem before?

if it happens with different devices, could be a hardware problem with the ports
    or the hard drive.
if PowerBook is under warranty, you may want to get it serviced.

  • Firewire and USB as a Power Source Problem

I understand that I should be able to power an external device using just the firewire or USB ports. However, I just bought a MacBookPro (I had a PowerBook G4 previously) and it appears that when I connect my Blackberry to my USB port it no longer gets fully charged. And now, I just connected my Firebox recording interface (with Firewire)and it only works with the external power supply attached (whereas it worked fine on my G4 with just the firewire cable). Has anyone else experienced something similar, or is there a problem with the PowerBook?

Okay I got it to power by HD but It still won't power my PreSonus FirePod. I've read some other post and it would appear that the FirePod is incompatible with the Mac Book Pro. How could this be? I thought Macs were the best? Somebody please help.

  • Firewire and USB

In my process of researching to buy a new Intel Macbook I've discovered that there is only one firewire port, two USB 2.0 ports, and no pcmcia port.
Here's my problem. This laptop will replace my old powerbook that I use for recording audio. I need one bus for audio to enter the laptop and one bus to access my external hard drive to write the audio. I currently have a firewire bus card in the pcmcia slot and use the firewire port for the other bus on my powerbook. This optimizes the amount of data that Logic can process. My worries with the new macbook is that USB 2 is typically slower than firewire. So using the firewire and USB 2.0 ports may slow me down. I know the old powerbooks with USB 2.0 had issues with the USB 2.0 bus being really slow compared to PCs. Was this problem ever fixed? Does anyone have any experience with this or any suggestions? I know I could just buy a macbook pro, but I really didn't want to spend that much money.

Actually there's more than just another FW port. It's a FW800 port, ExpressCard/34 expansion slot, faster and better GPU with more VRAM, faster CPU, more RAM, bigger hard drive, and higher resolution screen.
You're buying a business computer. That means you are making an investment. You can write off the investment which reduces taxes. Doesn't it make better sense to be dollar wise rather than penny foolish? Over a three year write-off period you're bartering over $250 per year.
The MacBook has no expansion future whereas the MacBook Pro does.
However, this is ultimately your decision. All I wanted to do was point out the benefits of the MBP over the MB. I should probably stop here lest I sound like I'm making a sales pitch - which I'm not. I own a MacBook and two MBPs. I like them both.

  • Sonnet Tango PCI-Express Firewire 400/USB 2.0

Had my new Mac Pro less than a week and as I didn't want to move it out from under my desk too much I fitted an extra 500Gb HD and a Sonnet Tango PCi-Express Firewire 400/USB 2.0 card before I started it up for the first time.
If I put the Mac to sleep it won't wake (I have to restart using the power button) and the status light flashes in a '3 flash then pause and repeat' way indicating failed RAM.
I've replaced the 3x 2Gb RAM sticks (as fitted by my local Apple reseller) and replaced them with the standard 3x 1Gb as shipped… No change… I've run the AHT and Memtest and everything checks out fine there. Remove the Sonnet card and the problem is gone, I've tried the card in a different slot and the problem returns… I don't have another PCI-Express card to try… Any suggestions as how to proceed? I need those FW400 ports!

I've contacted Sonnet and they've been very helpful… They tell me that I'm the first person to report a sleep issue with this card (really?) and that I need to contact the retailer that I bought it from as it must be faulty. As yet I've had no reply from the retailer and Sonnet have offered to contact their UK rep on my behalf if I don't hear anything in the next couple of days. I'll keep you posted…

I'd also like to know if you can convert USB 2.0 to Firewire. I've seen some hubs around the $40 dollar range, but it is not clearly stated if they will convert, or if they are just hubs.
I recently bought the new MacBook Aluminum and it has no firewire port. Problem? My external hard drive is firewire. So I can no longer access my backup drive or backup data on that firewire drive without having to jump through some hoops.
Does anyone have reliable experience transferring data through USB on their Mac to firewire on an external drive? If so... what sort of hub/converter were you using?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks...

You need a network connection and a product such as ScreenRecycler. All such products require a bootable OS on the iMac.

  • Premiere Pro CS3 Capture Question (Firewire to USB Converter)

Does Premiere Pro CS3 support capture through a Firewire to USB Converter?  More specifically, we have one particular PC laptop that does not have a firewire port, only USB 2.0.  So we were thinking of getting a firewire to USB converter.  Will that work for capturing footage from our Mini DV camera?
Camera is Canon XH-A1S HD and a firewire cable will be running from this camera to the firewire to USB converter, then a USB cable will be running out of the converter into the dual core laptop with Windows 7, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 460M video card.
    Thank you!

Might work then again it might not. Have not heared of any positive results. In other words imo its a waste of money.
You need a real firewire connection.
