Help with Accessing iTunes Library from both Mac and PC

Hi All
I'm new to this community and new(ish) to the world of Mac.
At home we share a single iTunes Library stored on a NAS Drive across 4 different Windows PC's (Mine, My Wifes and the 2 kids).  I have recetly got myself a MacBook Pro and hoped to hook it up to our central iTunes library.
I was pleased to see that the Library opened but sadly none of the songs can be located and I get the dreaded grey symbol against tracks if I try and play them.
On further investigation it would appear to be a naming convention issue.  The iTunes Library is expecting to see each song in the following location:
file://localhost/Volumes/Music/iTunes Library/iTunes Media/Music/Artist/Album/song.mp3
The problem is the localhost element as the mac sees the same location as:
file://Volumes/Music/iTunes Library/iTunes Media/Music/Artist/Album/song.mp3
Is there anyway of harmonising between the 2 systems?  or am I asking the impossible.
Many Thanks .... Blue

Thanks Jim
That does make sense.
BUT ... have been doing some more investigation and it appears that my Windows iTunes is displaying the same symptoms and the tracks have lost connection with the iTunes Library.
I'm now very confused ....
I take it what I am trying to do IS possible?
Any other suggestions.
Many Thanks .... Blue

  • Control iTunes library from both MB and iPhone

    Hi Dears,
Couldn't find a direct answer to the following question:
I have a MacBook and an iPhone. Have some music purchased in iTunes Store and some from an external source directly loaded from MB to the phone. Currently manual sync is set up.
Usually I buy or load full albums and then remove songs I don't like. Usually I do such "cleaning" on the go in the iPhone.
If I setup automatic sync I can reach the case when I remove songs in iTunes library and they are removed from the synced devices.
The question is whether vice versa the songs I've removed on my iPhone could be automatically removed from my iTunes library?
(i.e. I want to reach one library managed from different devices).
    Please advise
    Thanks,
    Anton

The phone syncs to the computer, not the other way around.  Transferring purchases is a syncing option but does not delete items on the computer if they are not on the phone:

You can try doing something with playlists,  making a smart playlist with things that are not in a transferred playlist, then delete everything in the smart playlist, but you're really trying to do it all reverse from the way it is intended to be done:

  • How can I share my iTune library on both Mac/Windows on my new MacBook Pro?

I just ordered a new MBP. I have 15GB iTune library on my old Mac.
I'm planning to install Windows Vista and using BootCamp or fusion to use both Mac and Windows on MBP. I will use only Windows during work hours and will use Mac when I get back home.
Is it possible to have just an one iTune library to share for both environment? I'd like to update the library from both Mac or Windows of my choice.
I also posted on Windows section.
    Thank you for your help!

plus it doesnt show my smart playlists in the same track order as on my computer. its good but it has bugs and shortcomings.
thanks for the suggestion but i'd like to try the way i initially posted about.

  • How can I do to transfer all iTunes library from my Mac book Pro to Time capsule without to lost the alphabetic sequence of songs

How can I do to transfer all iTunes library from my Mac book Pro to Time capsule without to lost the alphabetic sequence of songs & artists? What is the correct way to transfer my 3000 songs to Time capsule, to free the memory of my Mac? Thanks a lot. Carlo Molinari (Rome - Italy)

How can I do to transfer all iTunes library from my Mac book Pro to Time capsule without to lost the alphabetic sequence of songs & artists? What is the correct way to transfer my 3000 songs to Time capsule, to free the memory of my Mac?
The following are the basic steps to transfer your iTunes Media folder from your MacBook Pro to the Time Capsule (TC). Note: You will leave the iTunes Library, and its associated files, on the MacBook Pro as you will only be moving the media files.
Be sure to shutdown iTunes before starting.
Next, move the "iTunes Music" folder, located in ~/Music/iTunes/, to wherever you want on your TC's internal hard drive. Remember to leave the Album Artwork folder, as well as the three individual library files where they are on the MacBook Pro.
Wait a while. If you have a large library, this will take a bit of time.
Once the iTunes Media folder has been transferred, open iTunes. Note: It will still be looking at your local iTunes Library on the MBP. As such it will think that the iTunes Media folder is still on the MBP as well. However, we just relocated it to the TC. If you attempt to select any song, you will get an error that the song is "missing." Not to worry, we will correct this in the next step.
We need to tell iTunes the media has moved to the TC's internal HDD. To change where iTunes "looks" for the media, open iTunes and go to the Advanced > General tab and use the "Change..." button to tell it where your new "iTunes Music" library is located.
Once this is done iTunes will likely pop up a progress window telling you that it's re-analyzing your library. Let it complete this step.
As a final check to make sure everything when as planned, click on any library file from within iTunes and press cmd + i (or View > Get Info). At the bottom of the Summary tab in that window is a "Where:" section that tells you the actual file path to that piece of media; be sure that path begins with the name of your TC's drive, and not "Macintosh HD."

  • Help! Transfering iTunes library from Windows iTunes to iTunes on a new Mac

I am sure others have asked this -- I was not able to find it though:
I have a Windows machine on which my whole iTunes library sits (both ripped CD's and downloaded music and TV from iTunes).
I need to move that to my new Mac.
I read the article about using my iPod to do this, but it doesn't seem to work across Mac/Windows. The computers are on the same home LAN. My old machine doesn't have a DVD writer or CD writer, so I can't use that option.
So, is there an easy way to just transfer it over to my new machine?
Also, what do I need to do (and in what order) about de-authorizing my old computer?
The Apple help and online resources are shockingly unhelpful on this topic. Thanks for any instructions you can provide.
    Thank you!
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

After you mount the drive, I'd recommend copying the folder over to your Mac desktop. From there, set iTunes to Copy Files on Import (under preferences). Select File -> Add to Library then choose the whole music folder you copied to your desktop. iTunes will load all the songs into your iTunes library and copy them to the appropriate folder in your hard drive.
When that process is complete, you should be able to delete the folder from your desktop and all your songs will be in your iTunes library.
    Hope this helps!

  • Help please Lost iTunes library from my MacBook Including both itunes purchased songs and uploaded from CDs. everything is still on my iPad is there a way to transfers it please.

there is a list of the songs on my MacBook but the media files have disappeared, also from my back up.
Tried to down load from iTunes Match but no success.
    Any help much appreciated

iTunes won't transfer or download a track if there is an entry in the library for it, even if that entry is no longer attached to a file.
See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
iTunes Store > Purchased > {Media} > Not on this computer may allow you to download all missing items.

  • Accessing itunes library from a second volume

My macbook at the moment has a single start up disk ie. only 1 volume, but I'm looking into creating a 2nd volume, install leopard on this second volume, then import my itunes library onto the leopard based volume. Then I hope to access the second HD from my inital HD.
    Is this possible?
I'm pretty new to the backing up way of things, but since a leopard installation failed I then had to reinstall tiger. So I dont want to install leopard over my existing tiger OS, rather create a new 2nd volume, and have leopard on that. Hope I'm clear enough!
    Ben

    Hi Ben,
    Not clear enough!
Is it that you have all you music backed up on an external HD
(as you speak of a "second HD")?
Anyway that would be your only solution, because if your question is about creating two volumes on the same internal HD (your MacBook's internal HD),
yes it is possible, you can have Tiger on Vol.1 and Leopard on Vol.2, but partitioning process will *erase everything*, so you must back up your music and all important files, first.
As for using iTunes on your Leopard volume, with the iTunes Library and files on another volume, yes, it is possible.
~ deauthorize iTunes from your current system, and authorize it then on your new system.
~ create the user accounts in the same order (in case the user of this iTunes library is not the first, genuine admin account who originally installed Mac OS X. Don't mind this order warning if you're all going from original 1st admin account, to new 1st admin account.
    Clear enough?
