Help with Dynamic HTML

I find myself generating dynamic html within servlets like this:

This is trememdous strain on my wrist and brain.
Is there any other way to generate dynamic html easier than writing it by hand inside the servlet?

Yes there's a much better way. Just try it with JSP Java Server Pages. It's similar to php or asp, but with jsp you can also use java code in it.

I am a Microsoft J++ developer, but am switching to Sun technologies. The first application that I need to work on is an application that does a great deal of dynamic HTML. I originally wrote this application under J++ but I need to convert it to Sun Java. The methodology J++ used for dynamic HTML (extending DhDocument) appears to be duplicated (somewhat) with Swing. I need a little push start here, I seem to have a mental block. My application must run in the client browser, so I believe an applet is the way to go, but I can't figure out how to manipulate HTML from an applet through Swing. Can someone point me to a simple Applet that, say for example, changes the value of a text box that is predefined in the HTML, I would greatly appreciate it. That should get me past this mental block so I can go on with the conversion. I have successfully added textboxes with Swing through my Applet, but I need to manipulate HTML elements that already exist. That's where I'm stuck.

Here's the code I come up with. It doesn't work. I get a javascript exception on getWindow. I have never used the JSObject before. Can you give me any advice on what I am doing wrong?

Help with dynamic page layouts

Hello JSP Gurus,
I'm attempting to dynamically generate the page layout for my site based on the organization a user belongs to. Basically, I'd have certain resources like navigation links, graphics, etc, that are modular. Then I'd like to construct the layout using these "moduls" in a dynamic fashion. Does anyone have any suggestions on techniques or technologies that would be useful? I'm not really looking at the portal/portlet model. Is this something that Cocoon could do by storing the layout for each customer as an XML file or something? Any ideas, suggestions, experiences would be helpful.

How does Tiles differ from the JetSpeed apache
project? They both appear to be portal-like
frameworks, or am I incorrect about that? Which is
preferred?Frankly, I can't give you an in-depth answer to that. Maybe someone else can help with more details.
What I can tell you is that JetSpeed seems to be more of a real portal architecture. Emphasis is placed on the framework portion, interfacing with exisiting applications. Visual layout takes second seat to this.
Tiles on the other hand puts more emphasis on visual layout and reuse.
Just looking at JetSpeed's visual interfacing a little bit makes me really dislike it. You build tables and such inside of a servlet, so there's a tight coupling (or at least, much tighter than with Struts/Tiles) between the presentation and logic. (I'm basing this on a JavaWorld article at

Based on your initial question, it would seem to me that tiles is much closer to what you're looking for (and likely easier to just pick up and use).
Anyway, take all this with a grain of salt; I'm not exactly an expert on JetSpeed. =)

Need some help with dynamic content

Okay so I have made a whole site design from the ground up, yea I know thats the easy part haha. Well now we have came into a problem in the coding aspect of the design. For the site we have dynamic content involved that is coded with PHP/HTML. The website contains a user system that requires them to log into view the content of the page.
Well the issues I am having is I can not get flash to load this external file into a frame I have designated for it. Im not sure if flash can load external PHP/HTML and I need help to figure this issue out since I am new to Flash.

One other thing you might try searching for, though to me it's just vague hearsay... Someone may have written a class that can be use which enhances Flash's limited html capabilities and allows for thml content to be displayed (possibly being its own version of a browser of sorts)... but like I said, it's only hearsay to me, assuming I'm remembering the right hear.

According to your description, you created ssis package to export data from database to excel, when the package runs, you want to create new excel and name the file with time stamp. If that is the case, we can achieve the goal by following steps:
Create a script task used to create excel files.
Create a data flow task to export data from database to excel.
Add OLE DB source to data flow task.
Add Excel Destination to data flow task.
Create connection manager for OLE DB and Excel.
Click Excel Connection Manager, in Properties window, click (…) button next to Expressions, then set ExcelFilePath with expression like below:

Help with dynamic text and and css !

My second question of the day.
I'm trying to build a feature in my app in which the user can
hide/reveal
bolding and or
italics and or
underlining. The text is being loaded in from an xml file
and I was thinking about styling it with css in order to get the
underlining. My problem is that the only way I can think about
pulling this off is to have a css style sheet that has a defined
bold,italic and underline class defined- - then another one that
just has a italic and underline class defined -- then another one
that has just a bold and underline class defined . . . and so on
and so on. You can see why I would prefer a much more streamlined
system. Unfortunately my experience with dynamic text styling is
somewhat limited. Hopefully someone can help me out here.

Perfect. I knew it was some little snippet that I was
forgetting. I made a temporary fix of creating a 0% alpha box over
the button like a fake click area above the text, and that worked
but I know that it was a half-arsed way of working around it.

URGENT: Help with dynamic borders!

Hello all -
I DESPERATLY need help with this! I am using the code from
kirupa's xml photo gallery with the thumbnails. right now the alpha
changes on mouseover, fine...but my client is demanding that it
draw a border instead. I have been at this for about a week and
have NO idea how to do this...i have looked at things like API's
and things...but my main issue is that the images and MC's are all
created on the fly and i dont know how to code in an on mouseover
draw a border type of function, no idea at all!

Assuming the requirement is to find the partition in the supplied table with the supplied high value and the issue is that dba/all_tab_partitions.high_value is a long, one alternative along the same lines as you've done already is as follows. (I've just used a cursor rather than a function for simplicity of demo).

Help with dynamic playlist for mpd

Hi guys,
I use mpd with sonata for playing my music, and after trying exaile there is one thing id really like for mpd, and that is the dynamic playlist function.
When you're playing a song in exaile with dynamic playlist enabled, it queries audioscrobbler and automatically adds similar artists/songs to your playlist (if you have them on your pc).
I dont want to use exaile as it just feels too big and slow and bloated (not KISS ), i know a little bit of python so i thought i'll try and make my own little script/program as Sonata has audioscrobbler support, but i dont think there is anyway to query similar artists.
I think im going to try and make this as a daemon type program that will run in the background adding songs to the playlist.
Ive found the code from the exaile source (audioscrobbler.py) which queries lastfm e.g.

This will print a list of similar artists to the flaming lips.
I've not done much with python so i thought this would be a good way to try and improve.

And if anyone else has any ideas/comments id like to hear them.

Help with dynamic GUI in NetBeans

Hey all,
I'm new here and was looking for help. I'm trying to create a GUI which is dynamic. I want a JPanel (I think this is the proper component) that will be dynamically populated with other modules, namely other JPanels defined as classes. This JPanel is within a JDialog. Ive been trying things like this:
myPanel.add(new myNewPanel)inside of a the index changed method but the panel is not being added. I feel like I'm doing something fundamentally wrong. Does anyone have any words of advice??

Of course JDialog has a pack() method.

Urgent - please help with parsing HTML

I'm very new to Java - i'm a biology major, actually, but taking this class for fun. Unfortunately, I'm having quite a bit of trouble with it. I've written a class that downloads a web page, converts it to a string, and then sends the string to another class, called BankRecord.
The web page string looks something like this:

So, what I am trying to do is parse the HTML so that it returns, as a string, the appropriate information. For example, in the above HTML, I want "Prime Mortgage (909) 369-1012 4/18/2003" etc.
The above is just one record, with several fields (bank name, phone number, date). The entire web page has quite a few records, for different banks, and I need to extract all of them. I think I've figured out how to find the start and end of the first record, but I don't know how to go about looking for more records. I'm guessing a loop? Also, how do I go about distinguish between the fields in each record (i.e., how to distinguish between phone number and date fields) Here is the code I have so far:

Here are 2 approaches:
If you have a fixed format, parse via delimiters. For example, if each "record" is as follows:
NameAcct Nobalance
each "field" of the record is delimited by ... tags. Thus, you could use regular old string functions such as indexOf() to read through the HTML string, and to pick apart the data you need.
Alternatively, get a HTML parser, and let it do the work for you. A SAX-like one that I've used successfully is at http://www.quiotix.com/downloads/html-parser/

I'm still stuck on learning database-driven development. I
plan to take the Lynda.com free lessons... but until then, if

My manager (VP eng./sales/mktg) wants to know WHY I think
Dreamweaver is better for developing database-driven applicaitons
than C# in an asp.net environment. I believe DW is better at
supporting CSS and enabling an user-friendly design for the UI, but
I don't know whether C# can do all the same things... (C# is a
development tool for the asp.net environment).
Can you help me identify why DW is better than C# for either
the entire dynamic site development OR just the UI?
Also I need to learn how to attach my sql queries (already
written) to an html page created in dreamweaver, We have an IIS
webserver. Here's how I see the process:
a) Kick off the query from a DW html page
b) access the DB through the web server (IIS?)
c) recieve the results back from the database
d) render the results on a DW page.
The sql is going to an oracle DB.
I can access oracle and run the query (using SQL plus) from
my PC, so the only question is how to I hook it up to DW...
Anything you can say to shed light on any of these would be
so helpful!

Hi Jane,
You must remember DW is a tool for creating websites. You
could use C#
for your website and do the coding of C# in DW. DW is not a
scripting
language as PHP, ASP and C# are.
As for the query, do you know what scripting language you
would be using
to connect to the Oracle DB (ASP, PHP, etc.)? Once you let us
know what
you are using it will be easy to give an example.
