Help with phone decisions

I am new in this forum and you guys may have discussed this already, but I am so confused and have received so many conflicted answers, including from the Skype customer service that didn't really understand my question, that I got a migraine. I am therefore asking for your indulgence and would greatly appreciate your help.
Here is my current situation: I make many calls abroad to tons of different countries. I've had a VOIP landline with lingo.com for the past 5 years. I am very happy with them, they are cheap, and they covered my needs. I didn't see the need to have a cell phone, except from cases of emergency or for travel, in which case, I have a "dumb" phone with AT&T Go Phone, which costs me $100 a year for 50 days of talk, i.e. charging $2 for one day use. So far, I've been supremely happy with these choices because my phone bill came to $600 a year tops, not to mention that if I ever called foreign cell phones, Lingo would charge me automatically without me having to buy credit.
Now recently I discovered that it wouldn't be a bad idea if I were more mobile and also had internet on the go because I sometimes need it and, when I travel, it's not a great idea to always look for a McDonalds to stop and use their free wi-fi. Additionally, my home internet sometimes goes offline, and I don't like not having a phone or rely on the prepaid cellphone, whose battery I may or may not have charged, or which may or may not have credit. I am therefore considering the following configuration:
1) I cancel Lingo. COMPLETELY. I don't have a landline any more. The End.
2) I get a Samsung Galaxy S4 through T-Mobile for $50 a month (including 500 MB data) or $60 a month (including an additional 2 GB of data).
3) I get a Skype Unlimited World subscription for $147 a year (I think) AND a Skype number. I can use the Skype number for international calls and I presume it will ring on my cell phone if someone calls me without a problem.
My question now is this: I happen to like the idea of my existing cordless phone at home with its four headsets. I would therefore like to retain those and NOT buy new phones or rely on my cell alone. I therefore don't want to buy a Skype dedicated cordless phone from the Skype website. I heard that there are adapters out there that convert traditional cordless phones that people use for landlines into Skype phones.
Is this true? Do you know which one is good? Will there be any issues using it? Above all, do I need to have a landline in order to use a cordless phone with Skype? As I said, I want to cancer my existing Lingo landline, so all I want to keep is Skype and of course my new cell phone.
Again, I would be most grateful for any help you may offer me because I am going crazy with all conflicting answers and for some reason some people don't seem to understand my questions. Thanks.

I have not had a landline for years.  I started with a dedicated PC with a USB Skype adapter (my backup) and moved to a Freetalk Connect Me.  The Connect Me device is an all-in-one replacement that allows me to be signed into Skype and use my home phone.  I tied this into my house phone wiring and have my Panasonic wireless DECT 6.0 basestation plugged into one of the jacks.  Some people use a dedicated Skype account for their phone whereas I just have the one account.  When someone rings me all my computers ring as well as my house phone.  I did have one Freetalk Connect Me fail on me (in 1.5 years)  but the replacement is much cheaper than buying a dedicated cordless phone.  Some people have claimed the phone quality is terrible.  I have been pleased with the quality overall, and the speakerphone option on my handset resolves issues when I dial into other VOIP systems that are low volume.
So basically you need:
A Skype ATA adapter like the Freetalk Connect Me ($60) which needs a traditional Skype ID
The Unlimited World Plan ($14 a month = $168 a year unless there is a 1 year plan promo for cheaper)
A Skype online number  ($30 a year if you have a subscription, so buy the subscription first)
You existing phone handset and Internet.
I still have a cell phone for emergencies and other uses.  Be aware once  you commit to a phone number you can't change it until the online number subscription is up.  You can however add another phone number to the account for the same price.  So it may be best to chose a number that is local for most your contacts or family members no matter where you are.
Make sure the Unlimited World Plan works for you.  Most of the subscriptions do not include mobiles and special numbers in all countries.   Those calls will require credit and raise your Skype costs considerably (like 30 cents+ a minute, etc.).  You can set your Skype credit to auto-charge if you are looking for a method of auto-payment for non-covered calls .   So while it doesn't bill you for the call specifically, it bills you (indirectly) for a block of Skype credit.  It can be real hard to impossible to get refunded/partially refunded for services so you can always pay by the month/3 months to test the service out longer than a free trial, but it will be more expensive.  If you do try a free trial or if you are using a subscription, you can cancel it at anytime to avoid getting billed the following month.  Your service would continue until that month of service ends.  All the unlimited plans have a fair usage policy so in that sense they are limited.  Generally this means the average user won't reach the limit and those that do tend to be using the account for something other than personal use.

I need your help with a decision to use iPhoto.  I have been a PC user since the mid 1980’s and more recently have used ACDSee to manage my photo images and Photoshop to edit them.  I have used ProShow Gold to create slideshows.  I am comfortable with my own folder and file naming conventions. I currently have over 23,000 images of which around 60% are scans going back 75 years.  Since I keep a copy of the originals, the storage requirements for over 46,000 images is huge.  180GB plus.
I now have a Macbook Pro and will add an iMac when the new models arrive.  For my photos, I want to stay with Photoshop which also gives me the Bridge.  The only obvious reason to use iPhoto is to take advantage of Faces and the link to iMovie to make slideshows.  What am I missing and is using iPhoto worth the effort?
If I choose to use iPhoto, I am not certain whether I need to load the originals and the edited versions. I suspect that just the latter is sufficient.  If I set PhotoShop as my external editor, I presume that iPhoto will keep track of all changes moving forward.  However, over 23,000 images in iPhoto makes me twitchy and they are appear hidden within iPhoto.  In the past, I have experienced syncing problems with, and database errors in, large databases.  If I break up the images into a number of projects, I loose the value of Faces reaching back over time.
Some guidance and insight would be appreciated.  I have a number of Faces questions which I will save for later.

Bridge and Photoshop is a common file-based management system. (Not sure why you'd have used ACDSEE as well as Bridge.) In any event, it's on the way out. You won't be using it in 5 years time.
Up to this the lack of processing power on your computer left no choice but to organise this way. But file based organisation is as sensible as organising a Shoe Warehouse based on the colour of the boxes. It's also ultimately data-destructive.
Modern systems are Database driven. Files are managed, Images imported, virtual versions, lossless processing and unlimited editing are the way forward.
For a Photographer Photoshop is overkill. It's an enormously powerful app, a staple of the Graphic Designers' trade. A Photographer uses maybe 15% to 20% of its capability.
Apps like iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture are the way forward - for photographers. There's the 20% of Photoshop that shooters actually use, coupled with management and lossless processing. Pop over to the Aperture or Lightroom forums (on the Adobe site) and one comment shows up over and over again... "Since I started using Aperture/ Lightroom I hardly ever use Photoshop any more..." and if there is a job that these apps can do, then the (much) cheaper Elements will do it.
The change is not easy though, especially if you have a long-standing and well thought out filing system of your own. The first thing I would strongly advise is that you experiment before making any decisions. So I would create a Library, import 300 or 400 shots and play. You might as well do this in iPhoto to begin with - though if you’re a serious hobbyist or a Pro then you'll find yourself looking further afield pretty soon. iPhoto is good for the family snapper, taking shots at birthdays and sharing them with friends and family.
Next: If you're going to successfully use these apps you need to make a leap: Your files are not your Photos.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
When you process an image in iPhoto the file is never touched, instead your decisions are recorded in the database. When you view the image then the Master is presented with these decisions applied to it. That's why it's lossless. You can also have multiple versions and waste no disk space because they are all just listings in the database.
These apps replace the Finder (File Browser) for managing your Photos. They become the Go-To app for anything to do with your photos. They replace Bridge too as they become a front-end for Photoshop.
So, want to use a photo for something - Export it. Choose the format, size and quality you want and there it is. If you're emailing, uploading to websites then these apps have a "good enough for most things" version called the Preview - this will be missing some metadata.
So it's a big change from a file-based to Photo-based management, from editing files to processing Photos and it's worth thinking it through before you decide.

  • Help with my decision to purchase a Mac

I am in business and must use PC based software for certain applications. The machinery I use is only PC based, and there are no plans to create a Mac version. I am fine with that. However, since I have started using a Mac at my church, for recording and editing, I am ready to make the switch, if only partially.
One big selling point is the apparent ease in creating presentations, brochures, websites, blogs, and podcasts. So, to help in my decision, I need to know if creating a website, and maintaining it, is as easy as the Apple website makes it out to be. My church has a website, and it seems very difficult to make changes, and writing all of the HTML code, which is all done by someone else, who does not like Macs.
I love how the Mac works, and I am not intimidated at all at the technology, because I haved learned AutoCAD with relative ease, Router CIM-Tech which runs a CNC router, Cabinet software, Final Cut, GarageBand, Live Lite 4, as well as all of the Microsoft Office stuff, which is a pain to use at times. And 2 years ago, I was almost computer illiterate.
I will always have to use a PC, but I would love to use a Mac for the majority of my work, as well as for fun. I just need to see that the pros overwhelm the cons.

    Power Book G4   Other OS

I am on the diving board and ready to take the
plunge. I do understand that some people may not be
able to view the site. Could I have a free download
of what it takes to view it on the site? Or will I
only be able to post it on .Mac? If I give
prospective customers the web address, will they be
able to access it, if they do not have a Mac? I am
using my Windows IE version 6.0 right now and I can
go pretty much anywhere. But is that because I have
    installed iTunes and Quick Time?
Compatibility is always an issue and exists even for Windows developers aiming at a Windows only market. Many tend to think of Windows as being monolithic but it isn't. There are a significant number of people using Windows 98 and the original Explorer browser. Indeed, there are still people using Windows 3, old versions of Netscape, even Mosaic! All developers make a fundamental decision: try to support all browsers or don't try. My experience has been that my iWeb websites are viewable by WindowsXP users who have the newest version of Explorer or FireFox. Older versions of Explorer and Mozilla have issues.
I just want to be able to say go to "xyz.com" to view
my product offering, and be done with it. But what
are the costs in maintaining this "xyz.com" site? If
it is just a subscription to .Mac that would be cool.
If I have to pay a third party to allow me to have
it, then I would like to know who that is and what is
    involved.
I did a quick search for the .Mac terms of service. I'm not certain if .Mac allows you to create commercial sites. There are lots of alternatives. I don't want to give any endorsements but I will say that my wife found a hosting site for her business that charges $12 a month that provides double the bandwidth of .Mac and an unlimited number of email accounts with POP and SMTP services. She got her domain name through that service for nothing, it was part of the deal. We simply did a search on Google for 'web hosting' did some comparison shopping, and rejected any service that didn't provide references.

  • Help with phone line in new home

I hope someone can help me.
I have moved into a new rental flat. There is a telephone socket and the phone still works. I was able to get the number by calling my mobile.
However, how do I find out who this is connected to?   Although it is not in my name someone is either going to get a bill at somepoint or a company will be out of pocket.
If I cannot find out who it is connected to, how do I trasnfer it?
I also, only want to get internet access, but if I am required to set up a new telephone, can I only do this with BT? Some years ago I got stung by setting up a phone acount with BT and getting my internet through another provider a day later who transferred the phone line and I ended up having to pay BT a full years contract.  How do I avoid this?
    Very grateful for assistance.

  • I really need help with my decision in purchasing an iPhone 4! =(

I will just go to my main concern.
I lost the phone of my aunt which is an iPhone 4. It was stolen from my bag. Out of common sense, I have to find a replacement because I know the my aunt invested money on it. However, brand new iPhone 4 here on our country are still pretty expensive for my budget. It is also hard to find becuase mostly stores no longer carry it becuase there is now iPhone 5. So, i have no choice, but to purchase a second-hand iPhone 4. So far, the second-hand iPhone 4 that I saw are from Singapore and Japan.
Now, my question. How can I be sure that the iPhone 4 that I purchase will work in the United States when my aunt will go back to the US. She works and live in the United States. I want to make sure that she can use the phone when she goes back to the United States.
Please please please I need help.
I am already stressed finding money to buy a replacement.

Verizon's offers full theft and loss protection. I am an attorney and tend to read fine print :)
The $8 a month is nominal compared to the benefit and peace of mind. I have had it on all my phones and typically you have to ask for it.
Over the past two years I have used it twice. My phone at the time was an HTC Evo, about a $500 phone. To replace outside the 2yr contact you must pay full price. That is $1000 for 2 phones.
The insurance cost me a couple hundred plus the deductibles. That's under $500 to replace two phones, or a savings of about $500 or 50%.
Even if you replace 1 phone in two years, your saving a few hundred- more if its an iPhone which retails starting at $700.
It all depends on where and how you use your device. If you never replaced one before the you may be better off without. I also don't put cases or screen protectors on my phones. I wouldn't dare put one on my beautiful iPhone 5.
Just a thought, if you don't have insurance, you should be ready to drop $750 at any given time for a new iPhone. Otherwise you end up with a temporary flip.

  • Need help with Laptop decision

I am sorry about the length of this post, but I really need help. I am trying to buy a laptop and what should be a really exciting prospect (buying my first laptop) is turning into a nightmare that just about had me in tears over the weekend.
My budget is not big - 600 absolute max, but would prefer to spend a bit less than this.
I do mainly office work (Word, Excel, Databases and PowerPoint) and also some Photoshop work. I also play a strategy game called Caesar 3. I very much want to load my copy of XP on the machine, either replacing Vista or as a partition.
Looking through the models available in my price range and looking up the benchmarks I have found the following:
Most have processors like the Intel T5250 or T5450 or the AMD TL 58, which are all benchmarked as ok, but not great. A few have the AMD TL 60, which is a bit better and one or two have the Intel T7200 which is even better.
On the bulk of the machines the graphics cards are either the ATI Radeon Xpress X1200 or the Intel GMA X3100. Both of these are benchmarked as not great and the review says that they cannot handle strategy games. A few of the models have the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 or HD 2400XT and one or two have the HD 2600.
The problem is that the models that have the better processor have the lower rated graphics card and those that have both don't have XP drivers, as far as I can see.
Don't mind a 15.4'' screen (although the 17.1'' would be very nice to have) and would like a reasonably big hard drive (160 +). I will be getting 2GB of RAM.
I am at my wits end. I don't want to buy a computer that will end up taking a minute or more to refresh a screen when you have more than two things open, or that you have to keep rebooting to get it to work. I want to be able to play my one and only game (Caesar III) which is a strategy game and I want to be able to work in Photoshop and perhaps have one or two other things open at the same time, like a website perhaps.
Please help me, anyone. Am I asking for the impossible? I can't get hold of an email address for Toshiba to try to get clarity from them on the issue of drivers and whether they will be made available in the future.
Then there is of course the retailer issue as each retailer only stocks a limited number of models and one has to choose between those.
I hope someone can help me!!

    Hi
The problem is that you want to buy an all-round notebook but dont want to spend much money.
Additionally you want to change the OS to XP and need the XP drivers.
Well this is very hard decision buddy ;)
A notebook for gaming equipped with the power full graphic card cost a little bit more as 600
So you have to take a decision; Do you want to buy an gaming notebook and spend more as 600 or you will take an notebook which is great for a common usage like DVD watching, working with Office software, etc
The Cesar game is not known to me but I presume it doesnt need a high performance graphic card and it should run on a normal notebook too.
I think a Satellite a200 is not bad choice for you because some A200 notebooks were delivered with the Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor and a NVIDIA GeForce graphic card.
And very important is that all XP drivers were already released ;)

  • Help with phone recognizing new number

I switched my phone number to another line on my plan and cancelled the previous line.  The CSR told me that everything worked fine, and if I powered my phone off and back on my phone would be updated with the new number.  Well I hung up with her, powered my phone off and on, and under my phone number in settings it still says the old number. So I logged in online and my phone shows its with the number I switched it to so that's correct.  I even powered it off and took the sim card out and put it back in and it stil wont recoginze the new number. Now I can't call the CSR back for help because it's the only phone I have and it says I'm roaming.  Please help! Thanks

What kind of phone do you have?

  • Need help with phone repair service.

    Hi,
I accidentally dropped my Nokia Lumia 520 mobile phone, it was functioning normally at first but then it just stopped working after a few days. The AllPhones store that I purchased the phone from had closed down, and the closest AllPhones to me also closed down.
My phone's 1-Year Warranty has not ended yet, is there another way that I can get the phone repaired under its warranty?
    Regards,
    Anne

    Hi, AnneFatma.
    Welcome to the forum.
What do you exactly mean when you say, "it just stopped working"? Does that mean, the phone is no longer turning on? Before sending it in, you can check these easy fixes first: http://www.nokia.com/us-en/support/product/lumia520/troubleshooter/ .
Note: The link is intended for the US. Otherwise, tell us your location so we can give you the correct link.
If the above troubleshooting steps did not work, you can look for the nearest Nokia Care Points located in your area using the links that were given by @farby.
Note: If you can, back up your files to avoid data loss. It's also worth reading the: NOKIA MANUFACTURER’S LIMITED WARRANTY FOR NOKIA WITH WINDOWS PHONE to know which are and which are not covered by the warranty.
    Hope this helps.

  • Help with phone sync

I am obviously completely stupid as for the second time I have been trying to sync my phone so I can keep my calendar on the computer and can not do it.  In fact I have been trying for the past few hours.
I have uploaded the ovi store and have received the text and it says that I am only partly synced and that I need to go into my phone and select to connect with ovi.com- but when I go into the devices available I only have mobiles.
What am I doing wrong- surely it can't be that hard- any help appreciated!

Hi, assuming you have an Ovi account, go to Ovi.com and sign in (on your PC) go to contact or calendar on the tool bar at the top and select, then set your device, then choose send settings, keep computer browser open, and you will get a txt messagefrom Ovi with sync settings, use the pass key from Ovi to open txt, Now ON PHONE go to settings-connectivity- and in your synchronise/data transfer options choose change sync profile, you will have Ovi.com as a choice now so choose it and sync, Just make sure you only have Contacts, Calendar and Notes ticked and then sync. These Items will now all be available in 'the cloud' and you can sync, restore even if you don't have the info on your pc.
Hope this helps, you will probably get better instructions when you visit Ovi.com !
    Good Luck

  • Help with phone problem

I'm in the UK and I'm on the Orange network.
I have a Curve 8900 and have had it for a year and a half.
My problem is that I had to redownload the BlackBerry AppWorld because mine wasn't working, yet when I tried to reboot it after downloading it, as soon as the 'verifying security software' got to about 97%, my homescreen disappeared and it went to bright white screen. I have pulled the battery and rebooted it a total of 7 times now and it is doing the exact same thing. I cannot use my phone to try anything.
My apps installed are Facebook, The Weather Channel, BlackBerry AppWorld, BeBuzzFree and Horoscopes. I was going to download the WhatsApp before this happened.
I'm at a loss of what to do.

I solved it! All is good. I rebooted it whilst connected to my laptop and it's working fine now. Must've just needed to be connected with the software.

  • Help with phone runaround

I have been with Verizon for many years and I am very disappointed with the service I am receiving with my daughter’s phone.  She has been having problems with her phone which is a Palm Pre 2.  Last month she was shipped what was supposed to be a “new phone” to fix the problems she was having with her phone that is under warranty.  The new phone arrived and is worse than the phone she sent back.  The phone continually shuts off and freezes up.   Today she went back to the store for the third time this month and was told we are sorry your phone is a piece of crap but you are eligible for an upgrade at a discounted price, or we can ship you a refurbished phone.  I am sorry the model of phone she has is crap but it is an insult to be told we need to pay for an upgrade to fix something that is under warranty.  You have refurbished phones because they didn’t work and someone sent them back.  I don’t think we are asking for much; just a phone that works!  It would also be nice to be able to email someone from Verizon.  The contact us page is a never ending loop that never gives you the option to email.

I believe these are mostly customer to customer forums with occasional review by employees.  I actually sent an email this morning from the contact us tab at the top.  You do have to go through a couple steps, but it was easy enough to do.
You also have the option of filing a warranty claim through the manufacturer of the phone (HP).  You may get resolution through them, but will be without your phone for the time it takes to ship to them, etc.  I am in no way trying to defend VZ, but they offer up the refurbished phones so that you are without a phone for a much shorter period of time than if you go through the mfr.  The issue is the level of customer service in the wireless industry is pretty poor compared with other businesses.

  • Need help with phone number keypad please

I have found when using my iPhone to call certain phone numbers requiring me to enter an extension number, I'll get a message that it's an invalid extension and try again, I try at least 2-3 times and still get the same message. Well I'll call back on a different phone and enter the exact same extension and it goes through. It's not always the same phone number/extension but it happens everytime I make a call on my iPhone that requires an extension to be keyed in.
Does anyone have any suggestions or idea what I can do? I've reset the phone several times but it doesn't help.
