Help with php session variables

I am using Dreamweaver 8 to set up a dynamic app with PHP and
MySQL. I want the code that the user logs in with ('UPN') to be
stored as a session variable so that recordsets on subsequent pages
can be set to display personalised data.
I have set the session variable like this: $_SESSION['UPN'] =
'UPN' (UPN is the name of the form textfield, also set as the
username for logging in)
On the data page, I have called the variable like this:
$query_Recordset1 = ("SELECT pupils.pupilID, pupils.UPN,
pupils.forename, pupils.surname FROM pupils WHERE UPN = '" .
$_SESSION['UPN'] . "'");
The recordset returns nothing- the dynamic table returns ony
the column headings (both as headings and immediately under where
you would expect the data to be).
Can anyone help?
Thanks

Your code assigns the literal string UPN to the session
variable. If
it's coming from POSTed form data, you'd need to do it like:
$_SESSION['UPN'] = $_POST['UPN'];

  • Problem with PHP Session Variables

    Hello all,
    I am in the process of converting an internal company site
    from ASP/Access to PHP/MySQL. All was going well until I started
    working with User Authentication involving access level. No matter
    what I do I can't seem to shake the MM_UserGroup variable.
    I have a link on the main page that is variable dependent on
    the access level of the user. If the user is logged in as a
    Supervisor they should see a link to the supervisor control panel.
    If logged in as a user or not logged in at all, they should see a
    link to the supervisor login page.
    I have put a Restrict Access function on the supervisor
    control panel and it functions as usual. When logged in as a
    supervisor I have access. When logged in as a user or not logged in
    at all, I don't.
    It seems that my homepage always sees the MM_UserGroup
    variable set as "Supervisor". I can log in as a user, close the
    browser, restart the server, everything and it always sees the
    variable set as "Supervisor". Just to make sure I wasn't crazy I
    put in an echo function so that it would display "MM_UserGroup". It
    always says "Supervisor" no matter what I do. Using echo to show
    the MM_Username variable, it functions as expected. When I close
    the browser and reopen it, I get a nice error as expected because
    there is no one logged in at that time. I still see "Supervisor"
    staring me in the face though.
    I'm sure it's something simple that I'm missing, not being an
    experienced PHP user.
    Any thoughts from the experts out there?
    Thanks in advance,
    David

    It sounds as though you are reassigning the value of the
    variable. If my
    memory serves me right, ASP uses a single equal sign to
    perform a
    comparison. PHP uses two.
    Check that you don't have something like this in your code:
    if ($_SESSION['Authority'] = 'Supervisor') {
    // do something
    That will assign Supervisor to $_SESSION['Authority'].
    It should be this:
    if ($_SESSION['Authority'] == 'Supervisor') {
    // do something

  • PHP Session Variable

    When using the PHP variable $_SESSION['idk'], what is the significance to the string 'idk'?
    I have been playing around with a login script, and I have seen some people throw 'user_login' or 'login' or 'user' and I figured it was just a way of labeling it essentially. But then I happened across a post where someone was generating and using a random string with the Session variable.
    Does this string have to be different for every user logging into a website? If not, what is the purpose of generating a random string to use in conjunction with the Session variable?
    Maybe any insight into different uses of the Session variable would be helpful as well.
    Thanks!

    On Jan 9th Iasked for help Asking for help with PHP to send an email wanting to send myself an email when a particular web page was opened.The group gave me lots of ideas / suggestions but unfortunately I was not able to make it work the way I wanted. • Need help with the session state value items.

    I need help with the session state value items.
    Trigger is created (on After delete, insert action) on table A.
    When insert in table B at least one row, then trigger update value to 'Y'
    in table A.
    When delete all rows from a table B,, then trigger update value to 'N'
    in table A.
    In detail report changes are visible, but the trigger replacement value is not set in session value.
    How can I implement this?

    You'll have to create a process which runs after your database update process that does a query and loads the result into your page item.
    For example
    SELECT YN_COLUMN
    FROM My_TABLE
    INTO My_Page_Item
    WHERE Key_value = My_Page_Item_Holding_Key_ValueThe DML process will only return key values after updating, such as an ID primary key updated by a sequence in a trigger.
    If the value is showing in a report, make sure the report refreshes on reload of the page.

  • Servlet/PHP Session Variables

    Hello Everyone,
    I am running an servlet that requires authentication. The authentication is done by a PHP program, while the heavy lifting is done by a servlet. How do I pass a session variable from my php to my servlet so that my servlet knows the user is allowed. I have tried
    Object done = session.getAttribute("loggedIn");
    with "loggedIn" being set by my php file, but done is always null. Any help is greatly appreciated especially if it is cookie free.
    Sincerely,
    Chem E

    You could consider the following solution: on click of the link, fire a specific Ajaxical request from the server where PHP runs to the server where Java runs to obtain an lengthy and unique key which expires within a few seconds, use JS+DOM to add that key as a query parameter to the link value and after opening the link let the Java side determine the key and handle accordingly.
    You only need to write code so that it is hack safe.

  • Need Help With Combining Two Variables For A Redirect

    Hello-
    <br />
    <br />In a different part of my site (built with ADDT) I have this script that creates a variable by combining two session variables, and then the new variable is submitted into a mysqul database table using a hidden form field:
    <br />
    <br />
    <form>
    <input type="hidden" name="exerreference" id="exerreference" value="<?php echo $_SESSION['kt_login_user']; ?><?php echo $_SESSION['kt_exer_reference']; ?> <br />" />
    <br />
    <br />There is also this part of the script in the header script:
    <br />
    <br />$ins_exer1-&gt;addColumn("exerreference", "STRING_TYPE", "POST", "exerreference");
    <br />
    <br />What I am trying to do now on another page is combine a session variable "kt_login_user" with a piece of dynamic text "AA" so that I can compare it to the field "exerreference" that was inserted into the database using the above script. If the two variables match, the idea is to have a redirect to another page.
    <br />
    <br />So in a hypothetical example, if the value of the session variable "kt_login_user " is "bestperson," and static text is "AA" then I need to create the variable bestpersonAA (because this is how the variables exist in the exerreference recordset). This variable bestpersonAA then needs to be compared to the recordset value exerreference and if they match, the page redirects to ../previous/portalpre.php. If the two variables do not match, then there is no redirect.
    <br />
    <br />Here is what I have so far:
    <br />
    <br />if (isset($_SESSION['kt_login_user']))
    <br />{
    <br />if ($_SESSION['kt_login_user'.'AA'] = $row_Recordsetexer1['exerreference'])
    <br />{
    <br /> header ("Location: ../previous/portalpre.php");
    <br />}
    <br />}
    <br />
    <br />The script doesn't work yet - it's redirecting regardless of if the two varibles match. Any ideas on the correct syntax to get this working correctly?
    <br />
    <br />Thanks
    <br />Dale</form>

    Hi Dale,
    if ($_SESSION['kt_login_user'.'AA'] = $row_Recordsetexer1['exerreference'])
    for checking whether two variables match, you´ll need the == comparison operator:
    if ($_SESSION['kt_login_user'.'AA'] == $row_Recordsetexer1['exerreference'])

  • Help with PHP and FLEX integration

    Hello i was wondering how to use php sessions with flex, i
    need a way to have secure connections between flex and php.
    I am using a script i made to pass mysql commands/results
    between them, and i am currently passing the php session id with
    the transactions. But if anyone gets a hold of a valid php session
    id then they will be able to use it. Possibly using flex server to
    have secure transactions?
    If i host both the flex created swf and the php file on a
    https server will it "talk" securely?

  • Help with updating PATH variable

    I am using a T42 with WinXp pro
    I installed JAVA SDK then I tried to update my cmd window path permanently so that I don't have to typed in the full path everytime, so I followed the description:
    Microsoft Windows NT, 2000, and XP - To set the PATH permanently:
    Choose Start, Settings, Control Panel, and double-click System. On Microsoft Windows NT, select the Environment tab; on Microsoft Windows 2000 select the Advanced tab and then Environment Variables. Look for "Path" in the User Variables and System Variables. If you're not sure where to add the path, add it to the right end of the "Path" in the User Variables. A typical value for PATH is:
    C:\j2sdk1.4.2_<version>\bin
    Capitalization doesn't matter. Click "Set", "OK" or "Apply".
    The PATH can be a series of directories separated by semi-colons (;). Microsoft Windows looks for programs in the PATH directories in order, from left to right. You should only have one bin directory for a Java SDK in the path at a time (those following the first are ignored), so if one is already present, you can update it to j2sdk1.4.2_<version>\bin.
    The new path takes effect in each new Command Prompt window you open after setting the PATH variable.
    The wired thing is that there is no variable named: PATH in my environmental variables, so I added a new one, and it did not work, the one that I always get when I do run-> cmd is
    c:\> documents and settings\my user name
    which I found out is the so called"HOMEPATH", and it is not seen in the environmental variables tab.
    How can I change it permanetly? Please help me

    then I run cmd again, I still get
    C:\Documents and Settings\user>set path
    Path=C:\JAVA\j2sdk1.4.0\bin
    PATHEXT=.COM;.EXE;.BAT;.CMD;.VBS;.VBE;.JS;.JSE;.WSF;.WS
    ;.pyo;.pyc;.py;.pyw
    It did not seem to help. The path variable that cmd
    uses remained the same.In Reply #2, you said the set path shows "Path=C:\WINDOWS\System32" Now you say "Path=C:\JAVA\j2sdk1.4.0\bin" That makes it look like changed the path. If you enter "javac" it should run. However, I recommend that you go back into the Environmental Variables and change the Path you added so it says "C:\JAVA\j2sdk1.4.0\bin;C:\WINDOWS\System32"

  • Need help with PHP contact form

    Hi guys,
    I've made a PHP contact form for my site and need help with a couple of things:
    The form action links an external PHP script (scripts/contact-form-script.php) but is there a way I can have it so the PHP script for the form is contained within the same PHP file as my contact form (contact.php)?
    I tried just putting the form code at the top of contact.php but the browser automatically reads the anti-spam re-direct, so maybe that needs revising too?
    The second thing is, how can I make the Name, Email and Message fields mandatory? So if a user tries to submit the form and hasn't filled in one of the required fields and clicks submit, contact.php reloads with a message at the top of the form saying something like 'Complete the required fields' and highlights the relevant field with a red border?
    Here's the code for contact.php:
    <form action="http://www.mydomain.com/scripts/contact-form-script.php" method="post" name="contact" id="contact">
    <p><strong>Name:*</strong><br />
    <input name="name" type="text" class="ctextField" /></p>
    <p><strong>E-mail:*</strong><br />
    <input name="email" type="text" class="ctextField" /></p>
    <p><strong>Telephone:</strong><br />
    <input name="telephone" type="text" class="ctextField" /></p>
    <p><strong>Company:</strong><br />
    <input name="company" type="text" class="ctextField" /></p>
    <p><strong>Address:</strong><br />
    <input name="address1" type="text" class="ctextField" /></p>
    <p><input name="address2" type="text" class="ctextField" /></p>
    <p><strong>Town:</strong><br />
    <input name="town" type="text" class="ctextField" /></p>
    <p><strong>County:</strong><br />
    <input name="county" type="text" class="ctextField" /></p>
    p><strong>Postcode:</strong><br />
    <input name="postcode" type="text" class="ctextField" /></p>
    <p><strong>Message:*</strong><br />
    <textarea name="message" cols="55" rows="8" class="ctextField"></textarea></p>
    <p><input name="submit" value="SEND MESSAGE" class="submitButton" type="submit" /><div style="visibility:hidden; width:1px; height:1px"><input name="url" type="text" size="45" id="url" /></div></p>
    </form>

    $to = "[email protected]";

  • How to create a physical table with a session variable.

    Hello,
    I have been trying to accomplish accessing data multiple databases from a single rpd and single connection pool. Is there a way to do it using session variables and OBIEE stored procedures or something. If someone has anything I could read up(unless I have already googled it), it would really help me out.
    Thanks.

    Where is there a need to access multiple DBs using the same connection pool?
    Just curious.

    I also found this, http://www.roseindia.net/software-tutorials/detail/15783
    It looks like it might be the same kind of thing I posted before but it might explain things in a different way as to help with editting such things as adding parts to the default setup of it.
    http://github.com/rejeep/authlogic-password-reset-tutorial   this one as well. It looks a little different. Tell me if they help.

  • Need help with PHP form processor coding

    I posted my first question on this forum earlier today and got help quickly. I'm going to try again and see who can help me this time.
    I have a customer feedback form that I designed and I am using Spry validation on the fields and I'm use Recaptcha as well. Now I'm trying to get the form handler working. I know there are some canned procedures out there but I hate using too much code that I don't understand at all.  I'm sure my first attempt at PHP coding is horrible but we all have to learn. My processor is working in some areas but there are holes I don't know how to fill in:
    1. When I validate the Recaptcha input, if it was entered correctly, I go on to send an email to the appropriate person BUT how do I send them a message and get back to the form if the recaptcha validation fails and still have their entries in place?
    2. Assuming the recaptcha validated correctly, my procedure sends an email  and it writes the comments to a file for historical purposes. These parts seem to be working (by some miracle). Once I do this, I think I would like to open a little window to send the customer a confirmation message, have them click the box to confirm and close the window and then take them back to the feedback form but now have it be reset. I'm not sure how to do these steps.
    Does anyone have a SIMPLE example to accomplish these steps?
    Thanks much!!
    Donna

    It would be hard to give you substantive examples of how to accomplish your goals here without seeing your PHP code, but in general the following methods would work:
    1.  To return to the form with the fields populated, is easiest when the processing script and the form code are on the same page.  The idea is that when the form is not properly completed, you fall back into the form code and use the data from the posted values to repopulate the fields, e.g.,
    <input type="text' name="whatever" value="<?php isset($_POST['whatever']) { echo $_POST['whatever']; ?>">
    or
    <select name="whatever2">
    <option<?php if(isset($_POST['whatever2']) && $_POST['whatever2']=='this_option_value') { echo ' selected="selected"'; } ?>>this_option_value</option>
    </select>
    Each field is set to repeat the posted data (if the corresponding $_POST value is set - to avoid error messages when the page is first loaded).
    2.  You can place the confirmation message on the page with CSS that hides it.  When the form is submitted successfully, just set a variable that is used to show the previously hidden message, e.g.,
    Assume the following CSS -
    #message { display:none; }
    and the following HTML -
    <p id="message">Congratulations</p>
    and the fact that you have set a PHP variable called $success to be true when the form is successfully submitted, you would just modify the HTML like this -
    <p id="message"<?php if($success) { echo ' style="display:block"; } ?>>Congratulations</p>
    Make sense?

  • Help with jsp session validation

    i've build up a page that only users wil 'administrator' as the session is variable can access. if they don't they will be directed to the login page.
    However, I'm getting a null pointer exception.
    my code is as follows:
    <%@ page import="java.io.*"%>
    <%
         if (session.getAttribute("id").equals(null) || !(session.getAttribute("id").equals("administrator")))
              response.sendRedirect("adminlogin.htm");
    %>

    message
    description The server encountered an internal error () that prevented it from fulfilling this request.
    exception

    root cause

    any pros please help? i know it's something to do with my jsp session validation. thanks in advance.

    one more thing, with regrads to the solution evnafets provided. I tried it out on all my pages that requires administrator rights and found that the code only redirects when it's not expecting any parameters. Else, it just display an error message there. Is there a way around this? Or I should let let my end user suffer?
