Help with running applet

Hi all,
I have wrote this simple code which takes the input from two textboxes and then when the button is pressed, it adds the contents of the two boxes and displays them in the third textfield.
import java.awt.*;
import java.applet.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
public class Exercise extends Applet implements ActionListener
     private TextField inputA;
     private TextField inputB;
     private TextField output;
     private Button but1;
     public void init()
          inputA = new TextField(8);
          inputB = new TextField(8);
          but1 = new Button("Press To Add Values");
          add(but1);
          add(inputA);
          add(inputB);
          add(output);
          but1.addActionListener(this);
     public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ae)
          int contentsOfA = Integer.parseInt(inputA.getText());
          int contentsOfB = Integer.parseInt(inputB.getText());
          int sum;
          if (ae.getSource()==but1)
               sum = (contentsOfA + contentsOfB);
               output.setText(Integer.toString(sum));
}It compiles fine, but it wont execute when i try run it.
Also does anyone know where i can download the Microsoft Java VM?
Thanks for your help
Michael

It compiles fine, but it wont execute when i try run
it.What happens, then? Did you run it in appletviewer or your browser? Did you get an error message? If you run it in your browser, you should open the Java Console to view error messages.
It looks like you never initialize the output Textfield so I think you are getting a NullPointerException.

    My example given before should work on different machines, try to export the server key and import it into the
    client keystore. Export the client key and import in the server keystore if you want the server to authenticate
    the client.

    Check the method getSSLSocketFactory in the applet, that will open a keystore for you.

  • Need help with advanced applet

    I need help with designing an applet as follows. Can someone give me a basic layout of code and material so i can fill in the rest or at leats give me some hints so i can get started since i am like no good at applets.
    Design and implement an applet that graphically displays the processing
    of a selection sort. Use bars of various heights to represent
    the values being sorted. Display the set of bars after each swap. Put
    a delay in the processing of the sort to give the human observer a
    chance to see how the order of the values changes.
    heres a website that does something similar

  • Help with running multiple threads

    I'm new to programming with threads. I want to know how to run
    multiple threads at the same time. Particularly for making games
    in Java which I'm also begining to learn. For running multiple
    threads at the same time, do you have to put two run() methods
    in the source? If not then how do you make two threads or more
    run at the same time?
    Thanks for helping.

    For running multiple
    threads at the same time, do you have to put two run()
    methods
    in the source? Hi there,
    Each thread is presumably performing a task. You may be performing the same task multiple times or be performing different tasks at once. Either way, each task would typically be contained within the run() method of a class. This class would either be a subclass of java.lang.Thread (extends Thread) or would be an implementation of java.lang.Runnable (implements Runnable). In either case, you would define a method with signature (public void run()...). The difference comes into play when you wish to actually perform one of these tasks. With a subclass of Thread, you would simply perform:
    new MyTask().start();
    With an implementation of Runnable, you would do this:
    new Thread(new MyTask()).start();
    This assumes you don't need to monitor the threads, won't be sending any messages to your tasks or any such thing. If that were the case, you would need to tuck away those returns to new MyTask() for later access.
    In order to launch two threads simultaneously, you would have something along the lines of:
    new MyTask().start();
    new MyOtherTask().start();
    Now it is perfectly possible that MyTask() would complete before MyOtherTask() managed to start in which case it wouldn't appear as if you had actually had multiple threads running, but for non-trivial tasks, the two will likely overlap. And of course, in a game, these tasks would likely be launched in response to user input, which means that you wouldn't have any control over when or in what order they executed.
    Anyhow, it's as simple as that. You should also consider following the Java Threading trail which shows a simple example of using multiple threads. You can find it at:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/essential/threads/index.html

  • Help with running bonjour

    I can't get bonjour to run on my computer. I have tried uninstalling, installing the previous version and downloading bonjour for windows from apple.The service starts normally and is running but the IE plugin shows "bonjour service not available", running the printing wizard shows the same. I ran the dns-sd which shows
    c:\>dns-sd -V
    DNSServiceGetProperty failed -65537
    c:\>dns-sd -I
    Registering Service Test.testtxt.tcp.local.
    DNSService call failed -65537
    I have itunes 8 installed, haven't found the need to use bonjour before so would usually uninstall it. Don't know much about bonjour, tried searching the forums but couldn't come up with anything. Can anyone help with this?

    I get into the same situation consistently after switching the network connection from Ethernet LAN to Wireless LAN. The only fix I know of is to restart the PC.

  • Need help with signing applets

    I'm trying to have an applet write a file on the client system, but I'm having issues signing my applet. I think I'm missing something and would appreciate any help. Here are the steps I am taking...
    1) keytool -genkey -alias blah
    2) answer all the questiosn
    3) jar -cvf Applet.jar *
    4) jarsigner Applet.jar blah
    5) applet code in the html file is:
    <applet code=Applet.class archive=Applet.jar width="900" height="600">
    6) run applet: appletviewer Applet.html
    I then get an AccessControlException. What am I missing? Also, why do I still get the AccessControlException when I run my applet through appletviewer? I was under the impression appletviewer automagically gave permissions, and the AccessControlExceptions were only when you tried to run the applet off a server.
    Some test code I'm using (AccessControlException at the System.getProperty line):
                        File out = new File(System.getProperty("user.dir") + "test.txt");
                        FileWriter writer = new FileWriter(out);
                        writer.write("blah");
                        writer.flush();
                        writer.close();

    It works now in my browser, after rebuilding jar and resigning. But it still doesn't work in Appletviewer...

  • Help with java applets

    Ok i know i haven't read the applet tutorial or had much experience with applets but just hear me out and see if you can help me.
    BACKGROUND
    Ok...so i have previously viewed an applet on windows viewing an html file on my computer. I am trying to view just the most simple applet (helloworld) on linux. I'm using Ubuntu linux, the latest version as of February 23, 2006.I created an applet file and an html file in the same directory with the html file having an <applet> tag in it linking to the HelloWorldApp. I have tried viewing the html file and the java applet won't load. Everything other than the applet worked and I'm just stuck.
    So my plea is would somebody please just paste the bare minimum html file and applet file that you can see an applet with? I want to learn about applets and will do the tutorial but I would really like to just see one.
    Please help,
    A frustrated applet noob
    p.s.
    According to java.com I have installed JRE 5.0 and i have compiled a java application so I'm pretty sure I have successfully installed JDK 5.0.

    Bob, what web browser are you using?
    Make sure that the browser supports Java applets.
    If you want just to debug your applet try appletviewer utility
    from JDK first.

  • Problems with running applet from Java Tutorial

    Hello
    I'd like to compile applet from Lesson Applets, trail: Deployment, title of lesson: A Simple Network Client Applet. But at the beginning of the source code is written that it will work only with: JavaSE 5 version.
    * SwingWorker can be downloaded at:
    * https://swingworker.dev.java.net/
    * SwingWorker must be downloaded for JavaSE 5, but will be included
    * in JavaSE 6.
    Well, does anyone know about applet doing the same thing which would work in older versions of JDK?. Do I necessarily have to install JavaSE6?. I have J2EE 1.4SDK and I run into errors compiling this example.
    Cheers

  • Problems with running Applet through HTML

    I am currently having problems with running my file through the HTML. For some reason when I open it in the browser it keeps saying Error. I am programming in NetBeans.
    The code I am using is:
    <html>
    <head>
    <title></title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <applet code=”CarApplet.class” codebase="RedCarApplet.jar" width=690 height=300></applet>
    </body>
    </html>

    Heres the error message, I see that it cannot find the class I have stated above. Any solutions?
    My class is in the 'build' folder but, the HTML file is in the 'src' folder. Now my applet contains a 'jar' file, do I need to add that to the HTML code?

  • Help with simple applet - dragging box

    Hi I need help with a simple applet concept.
    I have a picture drawn in the background, but I need to draw a square and resize it when I drag.
    So with the picture in the background I click, drag the mouse, and it draws a rectangle from the starting point to where the mouse is while the mouse is clicked.
    The only problem is I can't figure out how to do this without redrawing the whole picture. If I don't repaint, it just keeps stretching around rectangles and leaving them there.
    I don't really need exact code, just an idea on how to do this without repainting the background every time the mouse is moved (because the picture in the background is complicated to draw and takes like a second).
    Thanks
    [nvm, found out about xormode]

    ..the picture in the background is complicated to draw and takes like a second).Paint the 'picture in the background' to a BufferedImage, then when it comes to paint()/paintComponent(), draw the BI to the Graphics object (clipped, if necessary (1)), then draw the rectangle to the Graphics object. This would be further optimised at time of rendering, by drawing both the 'picture in the background' BI and rectangle to a second BI, and finally writing that 2nd BI to the Graphics object.
    1) There are potentially other improvements that can be made, particularly with clipping, but I suspect if you try as I suggested, the rendering will be very quick and responsive. I have 40 FPS sound trace animations that do a great deal more on each call to paintComponent(), before bursting the final BI to screen.

  • Need help with an applet that will only run as an application

    I am working on a slide show applet. The problem is that is won't run as an applet. I added a quite standard main method to stick the applet in a JFrame and this worked. I believe that the problem lies in how I am trying to open the files.
    here are two of the methods that I believe contain part of the problem
         private void showImage( String image_name )
              image_file = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage( image_name );
              display_image.loadImage( image_file );
              repaint();
         private void setFileFolder( String folder )
              file_finder = new File( folder );
              file_results = file_finder.list();
         }image_file is an object of class Image, display_image is an object of class ImageComponent (extends JComponent to draw an image), and file_finder and file_results are both objects of class File
    I would greatly appreciate it if some one would help me with this.
    The full source can be found at http://www.geocities.com/enchantedforest/3688/ImSP.zip

    Ok. I got the image loading to work.
    Now how do I fix the second method shown in my first post? It is needed to find all of the images in one specific folder so that the slide show can run.

  • Need help with Java applet, might need NetBeans URL

    I posted the below question. It was never answered, only I was told to post to the NetBeans help forum. Yet I don't see any such forum on this site. Can someone tell me where the NetBeans help forum is located (URL).
    Here is my original question:
    I have some Java source code from a book that I want to compile. The name of the file is HashTest.java. In order to compile and run this Java program I created a project in the NetBeans IDE named javaapplication16, and I created a class named HashTest. Once the project was created, I cut and pasted the below source code into my java file that was default created for HashTest.java.
    Now I can compile and build the project with no errors, but when I try and run it, I get a dialog box that says the following below (Ignore the [...])
    [..................Dialog Box......................................]
    Hash Test class wasn't found in JavaApplication16 project
    Select the main class:
    <No main classes found>
    [..................Dialog Box......................................]
    Does anyone know what the problem is here? Why won't the project run?

  • Help with refreshing applet

    If I recompile my applet and try to restart it in Netscape the changes do not take hold. I've tried refreshing and emptying the cache and even setting the cache to 0, but it won't run the new version of the program. The only way I can get it to work is to quit Netscape entirely, restart it, and start the Java program again. Why is this? And is there a way to get around this?
    And there is a a second related problem I have. My applet calls a CGI program and recieves html text in reply. This HTML text I display in a JEditorPane. The first time I run the program it displays it nicely, but everytime after that it displays the HTML commands mixed in with the text, i.e. "<TABLE><TR><TD>text" instead of a table.
    Does anyone know what causes this or how to prevent it?

    Thanks for the help again. I read the API myself and tried adding the new line, but it had no affect. I tried this:
    ResultsDisplay.getEditorKit().createDefaultDocument();
    ResultsDisplay.setContentType("text/html");
    ResultsDisplay.setText(inputStore.toString());and even this:
    ResultsDisplay = new javax.swing.JEditorPane();
    ResultsDisplay.getEditorKit().createDefaultDocument();
    ResultsDisplay.setContentType("text/html");
    ResultsDisplay.setText(inputStore.toString());But neither solution fixed it.

  • Need help with running a Java program on Linux

    I am trying to get a Java program to run on a Linux machine. The program is actually meant for a Mac computer. I want to see if someone with Java experience can help me determine what is causing the program to stall. I was successful in getting it installed on my Linux machine and to partially run.
    The program is an interface to a database. I get the login screen to appear, but then once I enter my information and hit enter the rest of the program never shows, however, it does appear to connect in the background.
    Here is the error when I launch the .jar file from the command screen:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: illegal component position
    at java.awt.Container.addImpl(Unknown Source)
    at java.awt.Container.add(Unknown Source)
    I am not a programmer and I am hoping this will make some sense to someone. Any help in resolving this is greatly appreciated!

    Well, without knowing a little bit about programming, and how to run your debugger, I don't think you're going to fix it. The IllegalArgumentException is saying that some call does not like what it's getting. So you'll have to go in an refactor at least that part of the code.
