Help with various conundrums...

Hello, thanks for reading my thread!
Anyway, I'm in the process of converting all my guff into .pdf format.
.djvu, .doc, .rtf, .html, .chm (GRRRRRRRRR!!!), .mht, .cbr, you name it, i am converting it to pdf.
And I'm nearly done...but i have some questions..
1)  How can I PERMANENTLY, COMPLETELY AND FOR ALL TIME TOTALLY AND ENTIRELY DISABLE (i.e. IT NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN EVER) the "header and footer" information being added to (a lot of) the files I convert?  It's really annoying having every page have C:\StupidFolder\RidiculousUsername\PointlessLocation\On\My\Hard\Drive at the bottom.  Yeah, I know, I can delete the header and footer afterwards.  I couldn't be bothered at the time...wish I had now, though!
2)  Given that the files already contain this annoying header and footer stuff, is there any method, software, anything on any platform (xp, mac, linux, BSD, solaris......) that can do a batch removal of all such information from all my pdfs?  Like, "kaboom! It's gone!"...wishful thinking, perhaps.  Well, you'd be thinking wishfully too if you'd spent as much time doing this as I have!
Edit- Oh yes, it would be good if it could remove non-acrobat made header and footer info too as an added bonus.
3)  I got some stupid html collections rubbish left to convert.  You ever seen them?  They come in a folder, normally with a file called "start_here.html", along with another folder containing "page1.html, page2.html...page6987.html etc. etc. ad infinitum).  Anyway, the most annoying thing about these is that when I try and combine 'em into one big pdf, acrobat/windows/whatever thinks that the order is:
1.html
10.html
11.html
19.html
100.html
2.html
double-yoo tee efff?!?!
Okay, I realise that computers work a little differently than human brains.  Still, is there any way to get them in the correct order?  Without, and I stress, WITHOUT MANUALLY MOVING ALL THE FILES AROUND!!!  (I suspect this is what I will be doing in the end, though...)
4) Think that's about it.  I really thought I had more stuff to ask.  Oh well...
Thanks in advance for all the helpful replies!

"Execute File > Create PDF > From Web Page...
Press the Settings button"
Hmmmmmmmmmmm.  Now, I haven't tried this yet, but this sounds to me like an ad-hoc, case by case, every single time i make a pdf (or bunch of pdfs), change the settings each and every time, with 100,000,000 html documents, some of which need to be merged, some of which don't, etc. etc.
Forgive me if I am wrong about this, but this does not sound like it will (forgive the capitalisation, it's only for emphasis)
PERMANENTLY
COMPLETELY DISABLE
FOR ALL TIME
EVERY TIME I USE THE FINE PROGRAM
NEVER EVER
EVER
ADD ANY HEADER OR FOOTER INFO
EVER AGAIN
FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER
(Until my hard drive dies or I reinstall the operating system)
If I have to click "settings > blah > turn off header/footer every time, I may as well click "remove header/footer"  every time instead.
Again, I will be back when I have tried this out to correct my post if I am not correct about this.  And, sorry if it sounds like I'm ranting, though I probably am, but I can assure you that I'm not ranting at Mr. Alheit, who I am very grateful to for helping me!

  • Help With Various Dreamweaver Issues

    Dear Friends,
    This is my first post and I appreciate any help any of you
    can give me. My knowledge of web design is minimal, but I do have a
    basic understanding. The fundamentals of HTML and web design as a
    whole are pretty clear. My weakness, however, shows in the fine
    detailed issues that come up throughout the course of designing a
    website, and much of it may have to do with a lack of knowledge
    with the software I'm using. I love Dreamweaver CS3. It's an
    excellent program. I'm totally hooked!
    I'm in the process of building a website for a friend who
    owns a retail gift store. The site has a total of 41 pages. The URL
    is
    http://www.southerncharmgifts.net
    It has taken me over a month to get this site to the place
    where it is now. I've learned a TON about web design, CSS, and the
    Dreamweaver program itself. I've been able to work through many of
    the issues I've had, but I'm stuck on a few things:
    1.
    Browser Issues.
    I've found it hard to sync the content between browsers:
    namely IE and Firefox.
    For example:
    In IE the sub-menus wrap (as I want them to), but in Firefox
    they do not. But in Firefox the sub-menu
    box borders are visible (vertical menus), even though the
    text doesn't wrap, but it's obviously in the dimensions that are
    seen in IE.
    In Firefox, the sub-menus are too far from the parent. It
    looks bad. But they are perfect in IE.
    The background image is centered in IE between the menus and
    adverts, but not in Firefox. How do I get the background image to
    remain between the menus and adverts? (Note: There is no background
    on the home page. Also, wider screens seem to move the background
    in IE, too.)
    In the horizontal menu "Category" the sub-menu item "Babies"
    cannot be selected in Firefox. In IE it works.
    There are gaps between items in the horizontal sub-menu. It
    appears to be related to items not wrapping, but it doesn't seem
    that enlarging the sub-menu box causes the item to not wrap. For
    example, under "Category" "Candles & Fragrances" is wrapped and
    it seems to be the reason why there is a large gap between "Babies"
    and "Eyewear." If I can find a way to get Candles & Fragrances
    to NOT wrap it might remove the gap.
    2. CSS Issue.
    I can't find a way to have the sub-menu hover
    underline instead of highlight the items. I want it to
    underline.
    3. "False" Issue.
    In the
    vertical sub-menu "by CATEGORY" the word "false" shows up
    just below the word "Babies." (It's hard to see, but it's there.)
    THANKS!!

    Your limited research has failed to uncover the essence of
    proper technique
    in creating web pages. Layers are NOT a general layout tool
    and will cause
    you much more grief than you ever imagined. Here's one big
    reason -

    They are, but only for specialty applications.

    It is my personal opinion based on seeing hundreds (if not
    thousands) of new
    users throw themselves on their swords as a result of having
    committed to
    pages built with layers, on this very forum.

    Starting over from scratch need not involve a redesign of the
    graphics. But
    on a site built from layers, it would certainly involve a
    rethinking of the
    layout method. Read this -

  • Help with various iPod touch problems ;O

       Hey guys! Recently ( about a month ago) I jumped in the pool with my iPod 4g in my pocket. I didn't notice until about 12 minuites late. After two days it finaly came back on. Now when it came back on the screen was always very dark regardless of how high the brightness was I could also see the water in the screen. After messing with the bightness it finally acted 'normal'. After that I just left my iPod alone to air dry for a few days. For the most part today the water is out of the iPod but it kinda stained the screen ( only can really see it on a white page) I also see a yellow tint in the upper left and right corner. Also when trying to use the cameras it stays stuck on the shutter. I've restarted it, restored it and updated the firware but nothing works. My microphone also dosent work when you try yto take notes it dosent pick up your voice yoou just hear muffling from the playback. I need some help guys!
    Thanks in advance =D

    I would say that some parts of the iPod have to be replaced becase of the water damage.  Apple will replace your iPod with a refurbished one for:

  • Help with various things...

    Hi there!
    Sorry i'm new here and had a few questions....
    This here is a screencap from a short horror film i'm doing, and I had a few ideas on how to improve it via after effects. However, i'm only a beginner with this program and would like a few points in the right direction in terms of what i'm after.
    One thing I wanted to do is some kind of glowing eye effect, but I think I can figure that one out as i've seen a few on youtube.
    Another thing is I want to know what would be the best plug in to remove grain as filming this low lit scene has made it a little grainy.
    The final thing is that I want to edit the color I do have on the subject and make it look a lot stronger, maybe more...otherworldly? So if anyone could suggest what I could do to achieve that I would much appreciate it!
    Thank you!

    Not meaning to be critical but it's much better to shoot with more light and then reduce the levels with color correction later. Digital photography of any kind doesn't respond well to boosting levels that are too dark or reducing levels that are too light. You'd be a lot better off if your video was about 4 stops brighter.
    That said, and being stuck with that image you have a few options. First of all change your project to 32 bit to preserve as much information as you can and give you more control.
    You can then try Effects>Color Correction>Exposure to raise the levels. You could try stacking multiple copies of the footage on top of each other with the blend mode set to Add or Screen. This may give you better results than simply cranking up the exposure.
    Once you have the levels up to where they need to be to see the actor you can start removing the noise from the image. There are a couple of options under Effect>Noise & Grain and there are some excellent 3rd party plug-ins but none can perform miracles. The more noise you remove the softer the image becomes. When you've got the shot fixed as much as you can pre-compose all of the layers then start working on the color correction and glows.
    Glow may do it for you, but you may want to try adding a blurred copy of the pre-comp on top with blend set to Add or Screen. You can then add an Adjustment layer on top to complete the color correction. There are a lot of tools available there from levels and curves to hue and saturation.

  • Need help with a currently "in-use" form we want to switch to Adobes hosting service

    Hi, I am in desperate need of help with some issues concerning several forms which we currently use a paid third party (not Adobe) to host and "re-distribute through email"...Somehow I got charged $14.95 for YOUR service, (signed up for a trial, but never used it)..and now I am paying for a year of use of the similar service which Adobe is in control of.  I might want to port my form distribution through Adobe in the hopes of reducing the errors, problems and hassles my customers are experiencing when some of them push our  "submit button". (and I guess I am familiar with these somewhat from reading what IS available in here, and I also know that, Adobe is working to alleviate some of these " submit"  issues, so let's don't start by going backwards, here) I need solutions now for my issues or I can leave it as is, If Adobe's solution will be no better for my end users...
    We used FormsCentral to code these forms and it works for the most part (if the end-user can co-operate, and thats iffy, sometimes), but I need help with how to make it go through your servers (and not the third party folks we use now), Not being cruel or racist here, but your over the phone "support techs" are about horrible & I cannot understand them or work with any of them, so I would definitely need someone who speaks English and can understand the nuances of programming these forms, to please contact me back. (Sorry, but both those attributes will be required to be able to help me, so, no "newbie-interns" or first week trainees are gonna cut it).... If you have anyone who fits the bill on those items and would be willing to help us, please contact me back at your earliest convenience. If we have to communicate here, I will do that & I can submit whatever we need to & to whoever we need to.
    I need to get this right and working for the majority of my users and on any platform and OS.
    You may certainly call me to talk about this, and I have given my number numerous times to your (expletive deleted) time wasting - recording message thingy. So, If it's not available look it up under [email protected]
    (and you will probably get right to me, unlike my and I'm sure most other folks',  "Adobe phone-in experiences")
    Thank You,

    Well, thanks for writing back...just so you know...I started using Adobe products in 1987, ...yeah...back then...like Illustrator 1 & 9" B&W Macs ...John Warnock's Helvetica's....stuff like that...8.5 x 11 LaserWriters...all that good stuff...I still have some of it working on a mac...much of it was stuff I bought. some stuff I did not...I'm not a big fan of this "cloud" thing Adobe has foisted upon the creatives of the world...which I'm sure you can tell...but the functionality and usefulness of your software can not be disputed, so feel free to do whatever we will continue to pay for, ...I am very impressed with CC PS on the 64 bit PC and perhaps I will end up paying you the stipend that you demand for the other services.
    So  I guess that brings us to our problem.. a few years back and at the height of the recession and near bankruptcy myself,  I was damn lucky and hit on something and began a small arts and crafts supply service to sell my products online to a very "niche market" ...I had a unique product and still sell that product (plus others) online...My website is www.vinylcouture.com...Strange? Yes...but there is a market it seems, for everything now, and this is the market I service...Catagorically, these are 99%+ women that use these "adhesive, sticky backed vinyl products"  to make different "craft items" that are just way too various and numerous to go into... generally older women, women who are computer illiterate for the most part...and all this is irrelevant to my problem, but I want you to have every bit of background on this and especially the demographic we are dealing with, so we can get right to the meat of the problem.
    OK...So about two years ago, I decided to offer a "plain sheet" product of a plain colored "stick back" vinyl... it is available in multiple quantities of packs ( like 5 pieces, 10 pieces, 15 pieces, in a packi  & so on)...and if you are still on my site.. go to any  "GO RIGHT TO OUR ORDER PAGE"  button, scroll down a little...and then to the "PLAIN VINYL" section...you will see the Weebly website order process.) You can back out from here, I think,..but, anyway this product is available in 63 colors + or - a few. So then the problem is,  how do they select their individual colors within that (whatever) pack?... .
    So my initial idea was to enable a "selection form" for these "colors" that would be transmitted to me via email as 'part" of the "order process".. We tried getting our customers to submit a  " a list" ( something my competitiors still do, lol, poor bastards)......but that..is just unbelievable..I can't even begin to tell you what a freakin' nightmare that was...these people cannot even count to 10, much less any higher... figuring out what colors to list and send me... well, lets just say, it wasn't working......I had to figure out a better way...Something had to be done.
    So after thinking this all out,  and yeah...due to my total ignorance, i figured that we could make a form with Live Cycle Designer (Now Forms Central)...(back then something that was bundled with Adobe Acrobat Pro), I believe, and thats what this thing was authored in... and it would be all good...LOL!
    Well not so simple...as you well know, Adobe Acrobat would NOT LET YOU EMAIL anything from itself.....it just wouldn't work (and I know why, and all that hooey), but not being one to take NO for answer,.I started looking for a way to make my little gizmo work.. So I found this company that said they can "hijack" (re-direct actually) the request to email, bypass the wah-wah, and re-transmit it to the proper parties.....for less than $100 a year,  I think...its called http://pdf-fillableforms.com/.
    A nice gentleman named Joseph Silva helped us program the thing to go to his servers and back out. Please dont hassle them...I need them...for now..it basically does work...try it...you should get back a copy of the form that you filled out...good luck however,  if you're on MAC OSX or similar...
    I have included a copy of both of our forms (and feel free to fill it out and play with it)...just put test somewhere on it...(and you must include YOUR email or it will balk)..they are supposed to be mostly identical, except one seems to be twice as large....generating a 1.7 meg file upon submission, while the other one only generates a 600K file or so...thats another issue for another day or maybe you can advise on that also...
    OK so far so good......In our shop, once Grandma buys a 10 pack (or whatever), Only then she gets to the link on her receipt page ro the relevant "selection form" ,(this prevents "Filling and Sending"  with "no order" and "no payment", another early problem we had)... which they can click on and it will usually download and open up on their device if all goes well...Then our little form is supposed to be fillable and is supposed to ADD UP all the quantities, so grandma knows how many she is buying and so forth right on the fly,  and even while she changes her mind..., and IT'S LARGE so grandma can see it, and then it TOTALS it all up for them, ( cause remember, they can NOT add)..,  except there is a programming bug (mouse-click should be a mouse-up probably or something..) which makes you click in the blank spaces to get to a correct TOTAL...about 70-80% of our customers can enable all these features and usually the process completes without problems for them especially on PC's running Windows OS and Acrobat Reader X or XI...at least for most... Unfortunately it is still not the "seamless process" I would like or had envisioned for the other folks out there that do have trouble using our form....  Many folks report to us the following issues that we know of.  First of all it takes too much time to load up...We know its HUGE...is there anyway that you can see, to streamline this thing? I would love for it to be more compact...this really helps on the phones and pads as I'm sure you well know.
    Some just tell us,"it WON'T work"....I believe this is because they are totally out of it and dont even have Adobe Reader on their machine, & don't know how to get it ( yes, we provide the links).....or it's some ancient version....no one can stop this one...
    It almost always generates some kind ( at least one time)  of "error message" which we do warn them about..., telling one,  basically that "Acrobat doesnt even like this happening at all, and it could be detrimental to ones computer files", blah-blah...(this freaks grandma out really bad)...& usually they end up not even trying to send it...  and then I get calls that even you wouldn't believe...& If they DO nut up and push the Red "Submit Form" button, it will usually send the thing to us (and also back to them at the "required email address" they furnished on the form, thats what the folks at the "fillable forms place" do) so, if it's performing it's functions, why it is having to complain?. What are we doing wrong?....and how can I fix it?...Will re-compiling it or saving it as a newer version of "FormsCentral" correct any of these problems ?
    Ok, so that should keep you busy for a minute and we can start out with those problems...but the next thing is, how can I take advantage of YOUR re-direct & hosting services?, And will it get rid of the error messages, and the slowness, and the iOS incompatibilities ? (amazingly,  the last iOS Reader version worked almost OK.. but the newest version doesnt seem to work with my form on my iphone4)  If it will enable any version of the iOS to send my form correctly and more transparently, then it might be worth the money...$14.95 a MONTH you say. hmmmmm...Better be good.
    Another problem is, that I really don't need 5000 forms a month submitted. I think its like 70-100 or less....Got any plans for that?  Maybe I'm just not BIG ENOUGH to use Adobe's services, however in this case, I really don't care whose I do use as long as the product works most correctly for my customers as well as us. Like I said, If I'm doing the best I can, I won't change anything, and still use the other third party, If Adobe has a better solution, then i'm all for that as well. In the meantime, Thanks for any help you can provide on this...

    The backup will overwrite your existing backup (although Apple states that it will retain your last 3 backups, space permitting).  As a result, if you delete photos from your phone and continue backing up, the backup containing the deleted photos will be overwritten by one that doesn't, and they will be lost.
    To keep them permanently, either add them to a shared stream and invite yourself as a subscriber, or better yet, import them to your computer from the camer roll as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.

  • Need help with overlapping divs!

    Hey everyone,
    I'm working on another website and I have come up against a common problem for newbie designers from what I hear, the dreaded overlapping div problem!  I have a 2 column fixed layout with a floating left div.  My left div has my nav bar and various images.  When my main content div has more content than the left floating div, the left div border does not reach the footer!  Until now, I have gotten by with just hitting return in my left column div until it reaches the footer.  I am sure it is not the right way to do it but it has worked so far.  The problem is, now one of the pages has the left column div overlapping onto the footer!  I did some reading and I am guessing it involves either the box properties or clear float which I am not too familiar with.
    Any advice would be stellar!  I know this is just another stumbling block to get over but I would feel so much better if I was doing it the right way.
    Here are screens of my issue,

        <div id="paragraphFloat">
          <h5>What Is Radon?</h5>
          <p> Radon is a cancer causing radioactive gas. You cannot see, smell or taste radon, but it may be a problem in your home. The Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. </p>
          <div id="apDiv1">
        <div align="center"><a href="http://www.epa.gov/radon/video/epa-epu.wmv"><img src="_images/psa_revised.jpg" alt="What Is Radon?" width="200" height="172" border="0" /></a></div></div></div>
        <p>If you smoke and your home has high radon levels, you're at high risk for developing lung cancer. Some scientific studies of radon exposure indicate that children may be more sensitive to radon. This may be due to their higher respiration rate and their rapidly dividing cells, which may be more vulnerable to radiation damage. </p>
    <p> </p>
        <h5>Why Is It Dangerous?</h5>
    <p> The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) and the Surgeon General's Office have estimated that as many as 20,000 lung cancer deaths are caused each year by radon. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon-induced lung cancer costs the United States over $2 billion dollars per year in both direct and indirect health care costs.</p>
    <p>According to the US EPA, nearly 1 in 3 homes checked in seven states and on three Indian lands had screening levels over 4 pCi/L, the EPA's recommended action level for radon exposure.</p>
    <p>The alpha radiation emitted by radon is the same alpha radiation emitted by other alpha generating radiation sources such as plutonium.</p>
    <p>A family whose home has radon levels of 4 pCi/l is exposed to approximately 35 times as much radiation as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission would allow if that family was standing next to the fence of a radioactive waste site. (25 mrem limit, 800 mrem exposure)</p>
    <p> At the 4 pCi/l EPA action guideline level, radon carries approximately 1000 times the risk of death as any other EPA carcinogen. It is important to note that the action level is not a safe level, as there are no &quot;safe&quot; levels of radon gas.</p>
    <p> </p>
    <h5>How Does It Get Into My Home?</h5>
    <p> Radon is a radioactive gas. It comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all soils. It typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Your home traps radon inside, where it can build up. Any home may have a radon problem. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements.</p>
    <p> Radon from soil gas is the main cause of radon problems. Sometimes radon enters the home through well water. In a small number of homes, the building materials can give off radon, too. However, building materials rarely cause radon problems by themselves.</p>

    <h5>What Can I Do?</h5>
    <p> Radon is a national environmental health problem. Elevated radon levels have been discovered in every state. The US EPA estimates that as many as 8 million homes throughout the country have elevated levels of radon. Current state surveys show that 1 home in 5 has elevated radon levels.</p>
    <p> Testing is the only way to know your home's radon levels. There are no immediate symptoms that will alert you to the presence of radon. It typically takes years of exposure before any problems surface. </p>

    <h5>Radon Myths</h5>
    <p><strong><em>MYTH:</em> Scientists are not sure that radon really is a problem.</strong></p>
    <blockquote>
      <p><strong><em>FACT:</em></strong> Although some scientists dispute the precise number of deaths due to radon, all the major health organizations (like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Lung Association and the American Medical Association) agree with estimates that radon causes thousands of preventable lung cancer deaths every year. This is especially true among smokers, since the risk to smokers is much greater than to non-smokers.</p>
    </blockquote>
    <p><strong><em>MYTH:</em> Radon testing is difficult, time-consuming and expensive.</strong></p>
    <blockquote>
      <p><strong><em>FACT:</em></strong> Radon testing is easy. You can test your home yourself or hire a qualified radon test company. Either approach takes only a small amount of time and effort.</p>
    </blockquote>
    <p><strong><em>MYTH:</em> Homes with radon problems can't be fixed.</strong></p>
    <blockquote>
      <p><strong><em>FACT:</em></strong> There are simple solutions to radon problems in homes. Hundreds of thousands of homeowners have already fixed radon problems in their homes. Most homes can be fixed for about the same cost as other common home repairs; check with one or more qualified mitigators. Call your <a href="http://www.epa.gov/radon/whereyoulive.html">state radon office</a> for help in identifying qualified mitigation contractors.</p>
    </blockquote>
    <p><strong><em>MYTH:</em> Radon affects only certain kinds of homes.</strong></p>
    <blockquote>
      <p><strong><em>FACT: </em></strong>House construction can affect radon levels. However, radon can be a problem in homes of all types: old homes, new homes, drafty homes, insulated homes, homes with basements, and homes without basements. Local geology, construction materials, and how the home was built are among the factors that can affect radon levels in homes.</p>
    </blockquote>
    <p><strong><em>MYTH:</em> Radon is only a problem in certain parts of the country.</strong></p>
    <blockquote>
      <p><strong><em>FACT:</em></strong> High radon levels have been found in every state. Radon problems do vary from area to area, but the only way to know your radon level is to test.</p>
    </blockquote>
    <p><strong><em>MYTH:</em> A neighbor's test result is a good indication of whether your home has a problem.</strong></p>
    <blockquote>
      <p><strong><em>FACT:</em></strong> It's not. Radon levels can vary greatly from home to home. The only way to know if your home has a radon problem is to test it.</p>
    </blockquote>
    <p><strong><em>MYTH:</em> Everyone should test their water for radon.</strong></p>
    <blockquote>
      <p><strong><em>FACT:</em></strong> Although radon gets into some homes through water, it is important to first test the air in the home for radon. If your water comes from a public water supply that uses ground water, call your water supplier. If high radon levels are found and the home has a private well, call the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791 for information on testing your water.</p>
    </blockquote>
    <p><strong><em>MYTH:</em> It's difficult to sell homes where radon problems have been discovered.</strong></p>
    <blockquote>
      <p><strong><em>FACT:</em></strong> Where radon problems have been fixed, home sales have not been blocked or frustrated. The added protection is some times a good selling point.</p>
    </blockquote>
    <p><strong><em>MYTH:</em> I've lived in my home for so long, it doesn't make sense to take action now.</strong></p>
    <blockquote>
      <p><strong><em>FACT: </em></strong>You will reduce your risk of lung cancer when you reduce radon levels, even if you've lived with a radon problem for a long time.</p>
    </blockquote>
    <p><strong><em>MYTH:</em> Short-term tests can't be used for making a decision about whether to fix your home.</strong></p>
    <blockquote>
      <p><strong><em>FACT:</em> </strong>A short-term test, followed by a second short-term test* can be used to decide whether to fix your home. However, the closer the average of your two short-term tests is to 4 pCi/L, the less certain you can be about whether your year-round average is above or below that level. Keep in mind that radon levels below 4 pCi/L still pose some risk. Radon levels can be reduced in most homes to 2 pCi/L or below.</p>

    Please if anyone knows what I'm doing wrong please please let me know!  Since I am learning, I really want to get main concepts like this down so I am not constantly doing things the hard way!  Thank you!
    Jayson

    1) Regarding validation, what does it do?
    It validates by telling you where your code isn't er... valid.  Sometimes the results are a bit jumbled but if you work through them one at a time and revalidate, it's a good way to learn.  If you fix all of the errors shown up through the validator you should end up with standards compliant code.  Not necessarily the best, most efficient code you can write but at least it will be valid and it helps you spot errors that hours of code-staring never seems to find.
    I don't use the DW validation tool because I find the W3c one easier.
    The W3c validator has a check box of HTML Tidy which can tidy up your code but it's not always as easy to see what changes.
    2) I know the <p> tag for spacing is wrong, I could just feel it in my bones.  I just didn't know what else to do.  If I <br> all the way down won't the code be just as cluttered?
    You're obviously a born web coder!
    <br> will bloat your page if you use them to position elements.
    Here you need to get used to a) the Block Model and b) CSS positioning.  Once you crack these, CSS opens up for you and becomes a little more intuitive.
    if you have two elements on top of each other rather than push them apart with other elements you do it with padding and/or margin.  There are things to watch out for here namely, collapsing margins but if you start to read up on the above, you'll get it.
    I just thought of something.  If I add a div in main content, align it to the bottom center with CSS, use a line break between it and the text above, and add the image in question in the new div, will the spacing between the text and image work itself out?  I just really want to get out of the <p> bad habit.
    Keep thinking!  Web design is not like desktop publishing or print.  Elements on a HTML page don't behave like paragraphs on a page.  Once you begin to figure out why not it all gets a little easier.
    If you want an image at the bottom an element you put that at the end of the content in that element.  Then you need to ensure there is no margin, padding or border between the img element and the next element (your footer).  HTML elements come with some styling that is applied by default in the browser.  Many web developers include a rule like this:
    body {
    margin: 0;
    padding:0;
    This sets the margin and padding to zero of course and it's purpose is to override the defaults.  Some people advocate applying similar rules to all elements and if your interested try googling Eric Meyer who has written about it online.
    One of the key purposes of CSS is to take styling out of the page.  It's leaner, more efficient for the viewer and the coder and helps with site management.
    3) AP divs are weird, and I did only use as a last resort.
    See? You're a natural!
    The reason is I am confused by the float and clear float classes.  My left column is floated left and that element is what I was having problems understanding.  I tried to make new divs and float right but I screwed it all up.  I am sure I am just not applying the clear float in the right places.
    Getting the hang of floating is key to CSS positioning.  You use a float if you want two elements to sit side by side on the page.  It disrupts the "document flow."  Ordinarily HTML elements are rendered one after the other, on top of each other.  Floating an element takes it out of the document flow and allows other elements to occupy its space.  When you float an element it should always have a width.  If the element below it also has a width, that width has to be sufficiently narrow to allow it to occupy the space.  In short, floated elements can't be wider than their containing element.
    The clear property is used after a float to stop an element occupying the space left by a floated element.  It works but confuses the heck out of me!
    So that leads me to my final point.  I am a novice too!  I might have fluffed a few of the technical points above but it's pretty much there.

    Martin

  • Need help with almost completed plugin engine project

    Hi all,
    For a while now I have been working on a plugin engine. After a few iterations, the engine is similar to the Eclipse engine, in that plugins use extension points and extensions to allow contributions. Unlike the eclipse engine I have added the ability for plugins to fire events through the engine and other plugins can add listeners, all through the plugin.xml manifest. Dependencies are mostly handled automatically at plugin load time (when extensions get resolved to extension points, and listeners get resolved to events). For the case where a plugin needs to use classes from another plugin, dependencies are also allowed to be declared. Like the eclipse engine, activation of plugins occurs the first time a class is used within the plugin's classpath, OR a plugin can be activated after it is loaded.
    What I need help with is testing, working on examples to provide with the engine project, and feedback/suggestions before we release the M1 build. I am asking for those that are interested in this type of work to volunteer to help where applicable and possible. I want to provide a solid plugin engine to the java community, one that is easy to use, works well, and is pretty effecient in terms of resource usage and performance.
    Of particular interest to me right at the moment is dealing with multiple versions. As I see it, the engine will be used within an application and as such plugins would be distributed with a specific application version. The plugin version itself is more of a notification as to what version a plugin is, although I imagine it will help when updating at runtime as well.
    Just a few other details of the engine. It handles (or will soon) dynamic load, unload and reload of plugins at runtime. Plugins can be distributed in an archive file format, we call .par (Plugin ARchive), with additional plugin filename extensions configurable at runtime. The plugins can be developed and deployed in an expanded directory format as they are in Eclipse as well, or in the archive format. In the archive format they do not need to be unzipped when deployed, and they can contain embeded jar/zip libraries. The engine handles finding and creating classes directly out of the .par file at runtime.
    Multiple locations to find plugins are configurable before the engine starts, and even after it starts more could be added to allow additional locations to find plugins. URLs are supported, and soon the HTTP protocol will be supported so that plugins can be downloaded and installed at runtime.
    The project can be found at www.sourceforge.net/projects/genpluginengine. If you would like to get involved and help out, please sign up on the dev mail list and send an email to introduce yourself to the rest of the members on the list.
    I'll also add that I am working on a Swing UI Framework built entirely from plugins. It provides a ready-to-launce UI application that developers can simply add their plugins to, extending various extension points of the framework to have menu items, toolbar buttons, status bar access, help and preferences dialog additions, file i/o choosers, tons of open-source components ready to use (or extend to add on to), and like Eclipse, hopefully... draggable window frames that can be dropped on any other frame to form a tabbed frame of windows. Some of this is a ways off, some is getting there now. Presently you can add menu items that do allow plugin activation when first clicked, so plugins can be loaded but not activated until needed. The Preference dialog works but is not completed, and a plugin that adds a plugin control panel to view all loaded plugins, activate them, load/unload/reload, view extension points, extensions, dependencies, etc is partially completed. The point is, to allow a ready to run UI framework in Swing with an easy path for developers to quickly build applications with. If you are interested in this, when you join the mail list and introduce yourself, indicate that you are interested in this as well, as we need help with plugin development for it and would appreciate more help here too.
    Look forward to some replies.

    Might I suggest setting up a project at a known project-site? I've seen your progress and questions posted here from time to time, but one of the drawbacks is that you have to fill each post with the entirity of your vision to explain what you're doing. That's a lot of text to read - and most folks will skip right over it.
    On the other hand, a well-crafted, good-looking project web-site, with appropriate links and docs and vision statements, diagrams, etc. will have more likelyhood of attracting volunteers. java.net and sourceforge.net are likely spots to set up shop. In addition, you get CVS and bug-tracking systems, which can be quite valuable in such a large-scale project where there are lots of pieces.

  • Mail.app - Applescript - Looking for help with my 1st Applescript

    Okay… so I am taking the plunge. I've finally found something that is bugging me enough that I want to make a script to resolve it.
    *Here's the situation:*
    I use Smart Mailboxes a lot. It's my primary window into dealing with email.
    I use MailTags (an addon for Mail) to apply keywords to messages, via Mail Act-On rules (an addon by the same company).
    I use Smart Mailboxes to show me messages with various keywords etc.
    What I have found is that Smart Mailboxes do NOT automatically update themselves. For instance, when a message in the Smart Mailbox is changed in such a way that the filter on that mailbox should not display it, the message will still sit there until I either leave the mailbox and return, or hit Rebuil in the Mailbox menu.
    The same applies for when new mail comes into my Inbox. If there is new mail that qualifies for inclusion in the smart mailbox I am currently viewing, it will not appear until I do one of the above two things.
    What I discovered was this script:
    tell application "Mail" to activate
    tell application "System Events"
    click menu item "Rebuild" in menu ¬
    "Mailbox" in menu bar 1 of process "Mail"
    end tell
    This is what got me thinking about scripting a solution.
    The other option is to assign a keyboard shortcut to the Rebuild command. But I would like the Rebuild to take place automatically when I apply certain rules to messages. I want my Mail Act-on rule to trigger the a Rebuild. I figure I can do this by having it trigger the Rebuild script shown above.
    *HERE IS MY QUESTION:*
    Is there a way to have the script check what the currently active/selected Mailbox is? Or, put another way, can I get it to NOT run if certain mailboxes are selected?
    Here's what I am thinking.
    Under no circumstances do I want this script to be triggered if the current mailbox is NOT a smart mailbox, and IS any of my IMAP mailboxes… most especially the Inboxes. That would trigger a complete cleaning out and rebuilding of the entire IMAP inbox, which has many gigs of mail in it.
    What I am trying to figure out, and would love some help with, is how I can make sure this script ONLY runs when the current mailbox is either ANY smart mailbox, or NOT an IMAP mailbox, or some other logic that keeps it from running in an IMAP mailbox.
    Any tips are greatly appreciated.
    With thanks,
    Jonathan

    Thanks Camalot,
    I appreciate your help with this. I am also enjoying learning more about AppleScript. It seems much easier that other scripting languages, if for no other reason that it uses basic english logic and words.
    When I run your script with an inbox selected, I get the following Result:
    tell application "Mail"
    get selected mailboxes of message viewer 1
    --> {mailbox "INBOX" of account "JE Gmail"}
    end tell
    Result:
    {mailbox "INBOX" of account "JE Gmail" of application "Mail"}
    When I run it with a smart mailbox selected the following is produced:
    tell application "Mail"
    get selected mailboxes of message viewer 1
    --> {current application}
    end tell
    Result:
    {application "Mail"}
    So get the impression it's not throwing up an error. Certainly, either way it does not run what I put into the On Error section, which was simply
    display dialog "Success"
    Is this useful? Can I test if the output contains the word "INBOX" ?
    I notice that if I have, for instance, a SENT folder select, it gives the following result:
    Result:
    {mailbox "INBOX/Sent Messages" of account "[email protected]" of application "Mail"}
    Which again has the word INBOX in there. Drafts comes up a little different.
    Result:
    {mailbox "Drafts ([email protected])" of application "Mail"}
    So if there was a way to parse the result through a test against "INBOX" "DRAFT" etc then this might work. What do you think?
    I have no idea how to go about that though, so your input would be very helpful.
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

  • Please help with a new dual purpose PC build

    Hi everybody in AdobeLand!
    I've been reading various boards and hardware sites and have started piecing together a dual purpose computer system.  It will be used for both video editing (of pre-shot hacked, high bitrate I-Frame Panasonic GH2 DSLR and camcorder footage using the AVCHD codec @ 1080p 24 and 30 fps) and webcasting/streaming purposes.  I would build two computers for each task, but it's just not in the budget right now.  I'm already stretching things as is.
    I'm still not sure if I will be using Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas Pro 12 yet, though it seems like they organize their folders and file structures about the same.  Adobe's cloud service has me a bit scared off right now.  This new scheme feels like they have their hand purpetually in your wallet, which does not sit well with me.  I may still go with Vegas 12 just to avoid that hassle right now.  Help guide me here, experts!  Telestream's Wirecast is being used for multi-cam switching and graphics for live and pre-recorded material being compressed and streamed.
    Back on topic:
    Here's the build as of right now...
    OS: Windows 7 64-Bit Professional (Windows 8 absolutely sucks!)
    CPU: Intel i7-4930k 6-Core Ivy Bridge (own)
    Motherboard: Asus P9X79 Pro (own)
    Memory: Crucial Ballistix 1.35v Sport DDR3L @ 32 GB (own)
    GPU:  EVGA GTX 770 FTW w/ 4 GB (will buy another HD monitor at a later date, hence the 4GB memory)
    Case:  Fractal Design XL R2 Full Tower
    CPU Cooling:  Noctua NH-D14 w/ SE2011 Bracket
    PSU: Corsair RM1000 Quiet Series / 80 Plus Gold / 1000 Watts
    Monitor: Dell U2412M Ultrasharp 24 inch / 1920x1200
    Optical Drive: LG Blu-ray Writer
    Keyboard: Microsoft 4000 Ergonomic
    HDMI capture cards: Blackmagic Designs Decklink Mini (x2)
    Storage:
    I bought two Samsung 840 Pro SSD drives:  one 128 GB and one 256 GB
    Thinking about possibly 2 (maybe 3-4 if I really stretch) Seagate ST3000DM001 3TB HDD's.
    I could sure use your help with any advise on arranging the storage to get the best bang vs. buck in speed and storage utilization (Wirecast can be setup to record live webcast sessions at 720p or 1080p in compressed files... probably no more than 120 minute webcasts... so that comes into play as well).  Just don't have the funds for an uber-expensive RAID controller card right now.
    Any opinions overall on the parts for the current build?  I still have time to send back and exchange anything already purchased.
    Thank you for your time and consideration.

    What do you not understand from:
    With all the reading and writing going on, on the boot disk, it is understandable you need a (number of) dedicated disk(s) for video editing, especially with the bandwidths required when the clip duration is short and the number of tracks exceeds one and uses a codec more complex than DV. The kind of files used during editing are, in order of their need for speed:
    Media cache & Media cache database files, created on importing media into a project. They contain indexed, conformed audio and peak files for waveform display.
    Typically small files, but lots of them, so in the end they still occupy lots of disk space.
    Preview (rendered) files, created when the time-line is rendered for preview purposes, the red bar turned to green. Read all the time when previewing the time-line.
    Project files, including project auto-save files, that are constantly being read and saved as auto-save files and written when saving your edits.
    Media files, the original video material ingested from tape or card based cameras. Typically long files, only used for reading, since PR is a non-destructive editor.
    Export files, created when the time-line is exported to its final delivery format. These files are typically only written once and often vary in size from several hundred KB to tens of GB.
    When you are doubting which category of files to put on which kind of disk, especially when using both SSD's and HDD's, keep in mind that the speed advantage of SSD's over HDD's is most noteworthy with the Media cache & Media cache database. These files are frequently accessed, are small and there are many, so reducing latency and seek times and increasing transfer rates pays off by putting these on a SSD, rather than on a HDD, even if it is a raid0. Export files can go to the slowest volume on your system, since you only export once. To help you decide, I have added priority rank-numbers for speed, with 1 for the fastest volume and 5 for the least speed-demanding category.
    and
    Well, in the benchmark tests we have not seen any noticeable difference between SSD and HDD in terms of performance, but logic dictates that there should be a small difference in performance when the volume used for media cache is a SSD, because of the much faster access time and lower latency compared to a conventional disk. If it is noticeable, it is specifically on this volume with the media cache and media cache database, due to the large amount of small files that need to be accessed and written. This argument does not apply to the media volume with a limited number of files, that are very big in size.

  • Help with build

    Hi all,
    I need a little help with building a new comp and any help will be appericiated.
    My wife is a video editor and she needs a new CPU.
    She is editing HD films from various cameras (she have several clients).
    The budget is around 1500-2000$ for the CPU without screens and software which she already owns.
    She is working with CS5.5 and using windows 7 pro 64bit.
    I read quite a lot in the past few days and I ended up more confused then I was, this is the setup which I thought of:
    CPU:       I was thinking about the i7 960 3.2 (310$) or the i7 2600k (330$).
    MB:         Asus p6x8D 1366 ddr 1600
    Graphics: Gigabyte nVidia GTX460 1gb gddr5 (210$) or gtx560(230$) the 570 is way off the budget (440$)
    BLURAY: Pioneer BDR-206
    RAM:      I don't know really.. I was thinking about 12gb but I am cluless about it.
    Power:     AX 850W Gold Active PFC 12cm Fan Modular (No particular reason, when I'll know my final setup I'll check the power I need with http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp).
    Case:      Antec / Thermaltake, No idea which model..
    OS HDD: I'm still puzzled weather to go for the small (60gb) ssd for the OS and programs or go for a 7200 rpm hd.
    HDD:       W.D Caviar black 1tb 7200 rpm, 64mb, Sata III * 4 with raid on board (Raid 0 or Raid 5?  - I'll save it for another thread).
    Coolers:   Help needed
    Any help will be more then welcomed.

  • Help with Sort function in Terminal

    Hello all... this is my first post on here as I'm having some trouble with some Termianl commands. I'm trying to learn Terminal at the moment as it is but I would appreciate some help with this one....
    I'm trying to sort a rather large txt file into alphabetical order and also delete any duplicates. I've been using the following command in Terminal:
    sort -u words.txt > words1.txt
    but after a while I get the following error
    sort: string comparison failed: Illegal byte sequence
    sort: Set LC_ALL='C' to work around the problem.
    sort: The strings compared were `ariadnetr\345dens\r' and `ariadnetr\345ds\r'.
    What should my initial command be? What is Set LC_ALL='C'?
    Hope you guys can help?

    Various languages distinct sorting - collation - sequences.
    The characters can and variously do sort differently, depending on what language is involved.
    Languages here can include the written languages of humans, and a few settings associated with programming languages.  This is all part of what is known as internationalization and localization, and there are are various documents around on that topic.
    The LC_ALL environment variable sets all of the locale-related settings en-mass, including the collation sequence that is established via LC_COLLATE et al, and the sort tool is suggesting selecting the C language collation.
    Here, the tool is suggesting the following syntax:
    LC_ALL=C sort -u words.txt > words1.txt
    This can also be done by exporting the LC_ALL, but it's probably better to just do this locally before invoking the tool.
    Also look at the lines of text in question within the files, and confirm the character encoding of the file.
    Files can have different character encodings, and there's no reliable means to guess the encoding.  For some related information, see the file command:
    file words.txt
    ...and start reading some of the materials on internationalization and localization that are posted around the 'net. Here's Apple's top-level overview.
    In this case, it looks like there's an "odd" character and probably an å character on that line and apparently the Svenska ariadnetrådens.
    Switching collation can help here, or - if the character is not necessary - removing it via tr or replacing it via sed can be equally effective solutions.
    Given it appears to be Svenska, it might work better to switch to Svenska collation thanto  the suggested C collation.
    I think that's going to be sv_SE, which would make the command:
    LC_ALL=sv_SE sort -u words.txt > words1.txt
    This is all generic bash shell scripting stuff, and not specific to OS X.  If you haven't already seen them, the folks over at tldp have various guides including a bash guide for beginners, and an advanced bash scripting guide - both can be worth skimming.  They're not exactly the same as bash on OS X and some specific commands and switches can differ, and as bash versions can differ, but bash is quite similar across all the platforms.

  • Help with scheduling Process Flows in Workflow in 10gR2

    Dear All
    I am after some help with the scheduling of process flows (PF) in Workflow in OWB 10gR2. I am trying to set up some PF’s to handle the refresh of some staging tables from various source systems. I have created a separate Process Flow Module for each source systems, mainly just to keep them separate and organised. I have a number of mappings which all run fine if execute manually or linked directly to a schedule/job. The problem I am encountering is when I try to run process flows from schedules. I have created process flows ok and have run them manually and they complete fine so I know that the content of the PF is ok. After linking and deploying the jobs I can never get all the process flows to run from the various schedules. What appears to happen is that the first PF works ok and any other PF that are within the same Process Flow Module/packages also runs ok even if its running off as different schedules. However PF’s under the other Process Flow Module fail with the following error

    Following this error the PF will not even run manually! If I then stop the schedule and either drop or replace this failed PF thus redeploying, the PF then runs fine manually and if the restart the schedule it runs ok the next evening. My problem is that this then appears to impact on the other PF’s which all though have not been touched and ran ok the previous evening they then fail the following evening with the same error

  • Need help with a Asus 27" monitor with webcam problem.

    Need help with a Asus 27" monitor I bought.  Model VK278Q.  The issue is that the webcam will not work properly.  Various applications can see the webcam, but I just get a black box.  From what I have read, the issue seems to be that there are no official drivers for the webcam.
    I thought someone in this community might be able to offer some help before I return the monitor. I read somewhere that it may be possible to tweat the OS so that the iSight software will work for the monitor webcam.
    Thx

    NAVARRO360 wrote: ...  there is no simple fix?  ...
    Eureka! You now understand the situation.
    Even the old standard for Mac OS X drivers for non-compatible cams, macam, says that it has no driver for ASUS (20") monitor camera.
    The macam status shows:
    not working (no documentation)
    With no working driver for the 20" ASUS, it is not surprising that there is none for the 27" either.  There may be good reason that ASUS won't (or can't) offer either the technical documentation or a Mac driver for their monitor's inbuilt webcam.  However, they apparently do not publish that information.
    If ASUS Technical Support cannot provide the driver you need for OS X, the ASUS will continue to be a ridonculous (sic) monitor whose webcam will not work with your OS X Mac.  The only other simple fix I can think of is to use the ASUS with a different PC that is compatible with this monitor and its inbuilt webcam.  What you do is certainly your choice.
