Here's a new glich for you...

Recently I've been having the same problems as a lot of people on here (Safari crashing, etc) however today my Touch had a glich that makes absolutely no sense to me. I was listening to my music, and while it was on hold, switched to the next song. The music stopped playing, and I got my wallpaper screen as if I had paused the music. When I unlocked it, I was brought to a "Playlists" screen that looked just like the Music browsing area, except on the bottom it was Playlists, Artists, Albums, VIDEOS. I've never seen this before! It was as if it was showing me a library of ALL my content, not just music or just video. I opened up a song and started listening again, and then I went to adjust the volume and A VOLUME GRAPHIC (similar to the one seen on any Macbook) appeared in the middle of the screen, with increasing bars below it as I raised the volume. As soon as I skipped to the next song it was gone and now I haven't been able to find it or the "Playlists" screen since. Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

I think what happened is your ipod somehow launched the ipod application that exists on the iPhone. When you launch the ipod app on the iphone on the bottom it shows playlists, artists, albums and videos by default. After all, the iphone and ipod have the exact same software minus a few apps, so it doesn't surprise me that something like this could happen.

Been having nothing but problems with idvd 08 in the past couple of days. The old won't open problem. Did the usual suggested fixes including a new user account. Also did "Old Toad's" preference fix. Can now open idvd but when I go to an existing project and open it, I get the first page menus and nothing else so try to reload the movie into the project and it kicks it back out(??).
Do I need to re-install idvd 08 and if so, what prefs etc do I delete?
Also one other question . . . if I have a project that exceeds the 4.2 capacity, can I burn it on a dual layer using the dual layer setting to accommodate the size of the file?
thanks in advance for any input

so try to reload the movie into the project and it kicks it back out(??).
Check to see if the movie you wish to import is supported by iDVD. This is from Help:
_Video and image formats that work with iDVD_
You can use these movie and graphic formats in iDVD:

Most video or image files supported by QuickTime (see the list of unsupported QuickTime formats below)

    16:9 widescreen formats

AAC, MP3, and AIFF audio files

Any format from iMovie: DV, high-definition video (HDV), MPEG-2 SD, MPEG-2 SD, MPEG-4 SD, MPEG-4 HD, and AVCHD
High definition video is converted to work with the format of your project. iDVD supports using 16:9 widescreen video; therefore, when your DVD plays on a DVD player that supports widescreen format, the footage appears in its original aspect ratio.
The following video and image formats are not supported in iDVD:

    Copyrighted or protected videos.

Movies saved in thousands of colors using the “none” compression setting in iMovie.

48-bit color images (16 bits per color). To use source files in one of these formats in iDVD, save them in a supported format.

Aurora uncompressed files. For best results, export Aurora clips as DV-format video before importing them into iDVD.

QuickTime VR, MPEG-1 or MPEG-2, Flash, streaming or encrypted movies, or QuickTime spanned movies. You can’t add MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files to an iDVD project because they don’t contain standard video tracks.

QuickTime Fast Start movies. (Fast Start movies are intended for Internet playback.) When saving a QuickTime movie for use with iDVD, click the Options button in the QuickTime Export dialog and make sure that the “Prepare for Internet Streaming” checkbox is not selected.

  • Time Machine must create a new backup for you

getting this error message Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you. don't want to lose the history off my backups how can i fix this without losing any backups.

    You really can't.
That's not one of Apple's clearest messages;  it means your backups are damaged beyond OSX's ability to repair them.  See #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details.

  • Getting this error: Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you.

I keep getting this error on my new Macbook Pro w/ Retina.
"Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you."
Connected to a wifi network and QNAP storage system.  There are 5 computers on this network, and each backs up just fine.  The issue is isolated to this one machine.
This error shows up every week or so.

A third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want. I know Time Machine accepts the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS with Time Machine, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple, or you, or anyone but itself.)

  • MOUNTAIN LION, MBP RETINA : Time machine keeps saying to improve reliability, TM must create a new backup for you

    Hello
I have a little network with 2 x Macpro, 1 x Macbook pro Retina, 1 x Mac Mini server and one DiskStation.
I have no problem to backup the two Macpro and the Macmini on the Diskstation
But I only have problem with my  Macbook pro Retina.
I was told to start the 1st backup using Ethernet
After a few complemantary backup in WIFI I get the message :
I have done this MANY times
I have tried to repair the Backup file
THE PROBLEM IS ONLY WITH THE MACBOOK PRO RETINA IN MOUNTAIN LION
I had Apple support, answer : "no support because you are using a disk station" (I have used this diskstation since many years without ANY problem)
Looks like it is a WIFI problem !!!!
Thanks in advance for your help
    Best
    Cyril

Yes. See #C13 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
My Time Machine drive is a 500GB drive connected to an Airport Extreme via USB.
I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See [Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Airport.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
You really should find a more reliable way to back up. See #2 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for your options.
I find this message confusing. Why must TM create a new backup?
As in the first link above, because they're damaged beyond Disk Utility's ability to repair them. Exactly what that is, we mere mortals don't know. It's only on network backups, and even folks using Time Capsules see this occasionally.

I get this on my new MacBook Air, but never got it on my old MacBook Pro.

  • "....To Improve Reliability, Time Machine Must Create a New Backup for You"

I bought the new Apple 2 TB Time Capsule thinking it would be a great way to get a powerful wireless router and handle file backup for both me and my wife's iMacs.  She is running an up-to-date version of Snow Leopard and I am on the most recent update of Mountain Lion.  The Time Capsule was installed and running by the first of August and we had no problems until this monday (7 weeks later) when I got the message that "Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability Time Machinge must create a new backup"  My wife's back up was still ok but I had to go though the 5-6 hour process of re-copying all my files(using an ethernet connection) to the device. All went smoothly for a few days until I got the same message again about creating a new backup.  Also my wife cannot enter her time machine files even though the computer is still being backed up. We have a stable internet service and both computers recieve a strong signal from the router. Is it possible that the Time Capsule Drive is defective? Is there any sort of maintenance such as zpping the PRAM that would help?  This is really frustrating as it looks like the timemachine backup is totally unreliable and not worth fooling with.  Is there any way to use the storage capability of the time capsule without going through time machine?
    Thanks,
    Reid McCallister

    hi
rest assured you are not alone. i have the same problem and i hate it with a passion. in fact, i am the victim of this message as of 20 minutes ago and doing a full backup as I am typing this. I am so overly ****** that I actually posted here and will be calling or emailing apple next because I cannot take this anymore. the problem lies in time machine and unfortunately, there is no fix for that. time machine is the best idea of apple with the worst implementation ever. you have no obligation to use time capsule to benefit from time machine as this would not be legal anyway. i will give you 2 temporary solutions and let you decide which one works best for you:
    1) open time machine preferences and turn automatic backups off. create a new full backup from scratch and only backup manually whenever you remember, preferably every day. the automation process is the problem that lies within time machine. also make sure that your system does not go to standy or sleep whatever that may be called. Power nap, despite all claims, is not compatible with time machine. install CAFFEINE, an app that keeps your mac awake and prevents from going to sleep while back up is in progress. use it like this and pray it will all go fine for a long time. you may wish to duplicate the first full backup to save time in case this should happen again so you have a base to start on
    2) install CCC (carbon copy cleaner) I have not used it myself yet, but probably will be installing it after finishing this post. it is claimed to be better, yet it is yet to be seen by me personally.
unless time machine can be trained without any addons to use a specific wifi only for backup, these issues will persist.

  • Here's a different one for you...

I have an original iphone which i have had very little, if any problems. I updated to the 2.0.2 software that came out recently and everything was once again going fine. Here's where it gets interesting.
Two days ago, the bottom row of icons (phone, mail, safari, ipod) stopped responding. All of the other icons on both screen pages work fine. The "slide to unlock" works fine. I have noticed when I go to settings, the bottom icon doesn't respond in any screen either. Luckily, I can still use the phone through contacts and can still receive calls, but with no luck using the "end call" button.
I've read several of the posts in these discussions and have tried the reset, hard reset, restore, reinstall of 2.0.2. I know I'm not crazy, these icons don't work! Anyone out there ever had this happen or have any suggestions?

I would suggest an appointment at the Genius Bar and see what they can do for you.

  • Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you.

I just wanted to collect all my messages since oct 16th. under one roof. I have spent too much time with this problem already, will NOT edit this the way I should. It REALLY bugs me that Apple doesn't acknowlege it - would make life easier knowing that they are working on it.
I have the same problem. It all started around Oct. 13th when my old 13'' MacBook was doing it's last backup just before I got my current 15'' Pro. It was running up-to-date SnowLeopard, and have 1TB TimeCapsule (1st generation).
Now I have had this same problem every two weeks running Lion in my new MBP.
This does not seems to be just Lion-related, or because of lack of space - my HD was 320MB, now 750MB (350MB used).
TM will erase the disk in this particular case, and you will loose all the data history!!!
You should make a backup with CCC or similar on a separate disk to be on safe side.
I think that there will be a fix for this problem, we are not the only ones complaning.
After more research I ended up with two options: either the TC HD is at the end of it's 4 year life OR Lion TM settings > options > lock documents 2 weeks after last edit is somehow behind this problem. I unchecked this setting and will see after two weeks...
    Meanwhile, fingers crossed.
SAME BIG PROBLEMS HERE TOO. JUST GOT A NEW 2TB TC bacause thought that my 4y. old 1st gen is kaput - but the problem returned just after 5 days of usage. And the newest airport firmware update did not help the situation at all...
Disk Utility verified TC disk OK, new MBP running Lion disk ok as well.
Tried about everything with my old MB with SnowLeopard.
I mean I have tried really everything since the problem occurred mid-september - new MBP, new OSX (Lion this time), new TC THIS WEEK, started fresh from the very beginning but the problem still exists.
I have no other software in my mac but from Mac App Store + Nikon + Adobe.
A virus? Others have it too?
Studied all day today and tried many options including ethernet / wireless settings (FYI: found out also that in Airport Utility alt-key brings the missin options in setting up wireless- and radio modes - confusing since no mention of this in the manuals).
There is a firmware/OSX - problem and it bugs me that Apple doesn't acknowlege it - would make life easier knowing that they are working on it.
Too many people are having these problems, and also I lost a couple of days of work while solving this on my own.
Here we are solving this mess as well. My 1st gen TimeCapsule began to work odd two months ago, needed to do fresh backups every week or two. Finally got a new one this week. Seemed to work fine first, but today a complete stop with my network. Problems occured not immediately after the firmware 7.6 update though. Seems that my iWork backups are a bit of a mess too since Pages keeps showing an unwanted photo in a written article after deleteting it from there...
I have my new TC 2TB as a base station downstairs + express extending to upstairs study + express joining for AirTunes (+ the old TC to play with). Lion and Airport Utility up-to-date.
Got also new MBP two months ago.
First thought that Lion is the problem, then that old TC is the problem - seems like APPLE is the problem...
BTW - DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU NEED TO HIT ALT-KEY TO SEE ALL OPTIONS FOR WIRELESS MODE AND RADIO MODE??? AND THAT SOMETIMES IPHONE AIRPORT UTILITY SHOWS THOSE OPTIONS, SOMETIMES NOT... sort of hard to figure that out without a mention in the instructions...

Unfortunately, the message pretty much says it all.
What it does not tell you is that your Time Machine backups are corrupted and Time Machine cannot repair them, so it wants to delete your entire backup file and start with a new one.
I'm afraid that AppleCare will tell you the same thing, but it's worth checking with them to see if there are any new developments in this regard for this puzzling issue which affects a small percentage of users.
Please post back on your findings if you pickup some additional useful information when you speak to Apple.

  • Ok here is a good one for you all

    So here is the problem.
We use PPTP VPN for our Exe's at my company and most of them are using airbooks or power books now.
They also use the ATT USB Mercury/ATT USB lighting cards for in emergency no network connection while traveling.
10.5 - all works great no issues ... ATT cards VPN no issues
10.6 - ATT cards work fine to get to the internet but as soon as you fire up the vpn connection and get connected to the vpn all traffic stops no internet and no intranet access. ( we send all traffic over the PPTP connections )
Both are connected and with out errors .. sometimes if you wait 30 minutes it all starts working , disconnect and re try nada.
I have upgraded firmware in the ATT cards , using the new 3Gwatcher application provided by sierra wireless and still nothing.
The PPTP works fine form home wireless , hotels , hot-spots seems to be related to the att cards form all the troubleshooting I am doing
Anyone have any thoughts - i did send a support ticket into sierra for some help to but I figured maybe you guys have seen this and no a fix or solution

I have no expertise with VPN, but here are some links that may help you. Two of them are related to Cisco VPN which may or may not be relevant to you, but you did not mention whether you were using Cisco VPN.

  • HP Officejet Pro L7580- here's a new one for HP Mac Architect

So like all the other disgruntled HP users who foolishly installed 10.5 when it was released, I have been without a scanner ever since. Until three days ago, however, I've been able to print, as the driver for the L7580 was included in Leopard. Now, whenever I try to print a document, the print queue opens and the job says "stopped", which, incidentally, is the same thing that happens when I send a print job to my other once-was-a-printer-now-just-a-giant-waste-of-space, the Canon LBP5000. I've racked my brain trying to think if I've done something to trigger this, pestered the HP call in support center, installed, uninstalled and installed the printer again, restarted, replaced the USB cable- anything I can think of. Nothing works. I run a small business and while it's been a huge inconvenience to lose my not so inexpensive scanner, I've made due with an old one waiting for HP to get their act together and release software that actually works with 10.5. Needless to say, I cannot work without a printer. Am I going to have to go back to Tiger now? Spend untold thousands of dollars on a printer that probably won't work with leopard anyway? Can anyone advise? HP Mac Architect?

Try this for a Quick Fix ...........
After reading other forum comments from people having the same problem with the yellow cartridge popping-out, combined with others who have realised that HP have no interest in compensating anyone for this rediculous example of, at best, 'bad design', or at worst 'blatent planned obsolescence', I have created a 'quick fix' that may add another 1, 2 or more years of life to the HP Officejet Pro L7580 Printer.
This is not the elegant technical solution I was hoping for.  However, in hindsight, it may prove to be a more reliable solution than replacing the faulty part that is actually causing the problem.  So, here it is the Quick Fix ........
I found a wooden triangular door stop that I cut to size that fitted exactly in the space between the plastic door and the offending yellow cartridge. To hold it in place, I wrapped the doorstop with 2" cellotape, then I stuck the door stop to the inside of the plastic door with double sided cellotape (double sided stick-on foam would also work well). With the doorstop in the correct place, the plastic door closed perfectly and was snug enough to apply sufficent pressure to the offending yellow cartridge, and hence stopping it from popping out again.  To make sure the plastic door does not 'fly open' with the pressure of the yellow cartridge (when it wants to pop out!), I applied another piece of 2" cellotape around the outside of the door, holding it to the body of the photocopier.
This exercise only took 10-15 mins to do.  I feel this is a much better option than spending another $300+ on a new All-in-One  system, as well as being a good environmental solution.  If this is DELIBERATE 'planned obsolescence', companies like HP need to be more accountable for, at best, 'sloppy design'.  Any feedback would be appreciated.

  • Here's a tough one for you.....

Does anyone have knowledge of whether or not it is possible to start a LabVIEW program (run when opened), bring it to the front and display it full screen, and then shutdown certain windows components behind it such as explorer, and ther various services, so that it remains running the VI but opens up as much system resources for LabVIEW as possible?
I would like to start a VI and isolate it from the rest of the windows environment if possible (obviously not things like max, etc. though).
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

You could try making your VI the shell application, but I'm not sure whether it will completely take over window, or just replace explorer (probably the latter).
You could also try some of Ben's suggestions here for improving performance.
Try to take over the world!
