Horizontal menu CSS heirarchy

A while back, one of you wonderful folks posted a link to a tutorial (I believe by one of this group's contributors) of sorts and it contained some very helpful info to newbies on understanding the heirarchy of items in the SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css and how each style afftected each menu item.  I lost that link...can someone help? Thanks for sharing!!

Or, is there a good way for me to figure out which CSS items control which menu and submenu items?

  • SPRY Horizontal Menu CSS control

    I am using spry 1.6 (upgraded) on dreamweaver CS3. I created
    a horizontal SPRY menu within a div and I want to center the menu
    within the div using CSS. I can't seem to get this to work. I would
    have thought applying "margin: 0px Auto;" to the ul.horizontalMenu
    (sp?) class in the Spry CSS file would have done the trick but it
    seems to ignore the auto. I can put say 0px 20% and it works but
    this does not compensate for possible expanding menus. I know this
    is a newbee question but that is what I am.
    Thanks for the help in advance

    Hi,
    The original CSS has been very carefully composed so that it will work in all browsers. If you make any changes to the original and you do not know what you are doing, you are asking for problems.
    When I look at your first set of rules and I see the following marked in red and a rules marked in green that are left out, then I know you will have a problem:
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal
        padding: 0;
        list-style-type: none;
        font-size: 100%;
        cursor: default;
        width: auto;
        background-image: url(myImage.jpg); // rename the image to your own
        background-repeat: repeat;
        vertical-align: bottom;
        float: none;
        position: absolute;
        margin: auto;
    Keep in mind that the original stylesheet has no browser issues. Any changes that you make are for your account and have basically nothing to do with Spry.
    My suggestion to you is, make a copy of the modified stylesheet for reference, then put back the original stylesheet. Consequently, make a new stylesheet called myStyles.css or similar, and put your changed rules in the newly created stylesheet eg.
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal
         background-image: url(myImage.jpg);
         background-repeat: repeat;
    Then attach this stylesheet to your document after the original stylesheet.
    If you cannot get the required result, merely play around with the rules within myStyles.css.
    I hope this helps.

  • Another SPRY horizontal menu problem with IE7

    I posted this before, with no responses, but I think
    I've narrowed it down to a CSS response problem with IE7.0. If you
    view the attached link in Firefox or Opera, the menu background
    color responds correctly on the drop downs. In IE7, the
    background-color is ignored, causing the menu to be translucent
    and, uh, ugly. Has anyone else had an issue with the
    background-color CSS attribute in the SPRY horizontal menu css not
    working?

    I'm not sure if folks are just wary of SPRY and AJAX issues right

    guess it´s all of that :-) But folks visiting these more

  • Deleted CSS for Horizontal Menu Bar. Help!

    I deleted the css for my spry horizontal menu bar and now when I try to upload it into a new page it is distored.  I added back the css rules for the menu bar and it helped but I cannot get the menu bar to line up horizontally like it was originally.  The bars are vertically staggered across the page.  Can anyone help me with the css settings to get the menu bar back to normal?
    Thank you

    Hello Teresa,
    we should not resign ourselves. I for my part, I'm very "happy" with my DW,  particularly you/we find here many unselfish helpers! What concerns your "way to build website an easier way" I'll propose DW itself (see screenshot of my German DW):

  • Horizontal dropdown menu/css

    Have worked out a horizontal menu using css but I'm stuck with the drop down part. There are two areas that drop down, one under Data Entry and the other under Reports. So far the only style used is display: inline;.View the file --> http://classreunionprogram.com/test_css/css.menu.htm
    Also get a validation error because of ignorance of how to.Any help is great.
    Thanks.

    Is this what you had in mind?

  • Horizontal menu bar shows serif type font in Live View and Preview but sans serif is in css file

    Help I am using the Spry horizontal menu bar and while it is working fine, it is showing a serif font in Live View and in all Browsers even though I have selected a sans serif font. What gives? I have attached the SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css

    Add this to your embedded styles:
    body {
        background-color: #999;
    font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    using, of course, the font list you want.
    All those styles that rely on the 'default' font will now default to the Trebuchet font list (or to your chosen list).

    Let's see what you have so far. Can you post a link to the

  • How do I change vertical menu to a horizontal menu in Dreamweaver CS5?

    Doing a website (my first) for a friend of mine. Followed the Adobe tutorial for a lot of it (with Paul Trani) and have everything done but now my friend wants the menu bar to be horizontal instead of vertical. (I have other questions but this is the big one for now) I do have a CSS file that is linked to all 4 pages. I have hunted and searched to no avail. The page started out as a template (2 column fixed, left sidebar, header and footer). I am hoping I just have to paste some code into it and have found a few suggestions on the web but nothing seems to work. I did get it to the point with a list with no bullets  with no background but can't get it to go horizontal. Then code started showing up on my design page and I gave up and turned to this forum. I would hate to start over. I do not even see a template that has a horizontal menu on it for one of the choices. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I think you are confused about how to differentiate between horizontal navigation and vertical navigation.
    In HTML, both are exactly the same. You use a list. So both will be just like you describe them:
    <ul>
    <li><a href="#">Link one</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Link two</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Link three</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Link four</a></li>
    </ul>
    Now, there's your navigation. Done. So how do we do an horizontal nav? Well we tell web browsers to format our HTML code in a style sheet, called a Cascading Style Sheet, or CSS. So let's give the <ul> a tag that tells the browser that it's not just a simple unordered list; it's special and has to be set up a certain way:
    <ul id="nav">
    <li><a href="#">Link one</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Link two</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Link three</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Link four</a></li>
    </ul>
    Now, let's go to our style sheet and create the style for the id "nav." And remember, anything with an ID on a web page must occur only once. If you're going to have several "nav" tags on your page, you have to make a class. The difference (in CSS) between a class and an id is the use of a hash "#" for an id and a dot "." for a class.
    So here's the CSS for the horizontal navigation:
    #nav {
              width: 100%;
              float: left;
              margin: 0 0 3em 0;
              padding: 0;
              list-style: none;
              background-color: #f2f2f2;
              border-bottom: 1px solid #ccc;
              border-top: 1px solid #ccc;
    #nav li {
              float: left;
    #nav li a {
              display: block;
              padding: 8px 15px;
              text-decoration: none;
              font-weight: bold;
              color: #069;
              border-right: 1px solid #ccc;
    #nav li a:hover {
              color: #c00;
              background-color: #fff;
    Here you're floating both the list and the list items left. Floating the list items left is what pulls them into a nice horizontal row, stacking the items from left to right. However, because of how floats behave, the containing list will collapse to a height of zero unless it is also floated left.
    And that wouldn’t be a major problem, except the list has a background color and if the list collapses, that background color won't show. This way, it’ll fill up the entire width of the page (or of its container, if it’s in a container with a width set).
    Additionally, the only margin you see will be the bottom one, so the list items will make their own margins and behave themselves. The list-style is set to “none,” which removes the bullets.
    Now all navigation will certainly be a link, so I style the list items that are links (#nav li a) with padding that will space them out, get rid of the default underline, setting the text decoration to none, making them bold and creating a thin right border. Then I change the color on the nav for a hover.
    Now, vertical is the default for a list.
    Here's the difference:
    You keep list-style: none;
    You get rid of your floats.
    You get rid of the 100% width, unless you have it corralled in a containing div, like a left or right sidebar.
    Boom! you're done.

  • Spry Horizontal Menu Bar not working in IE

    Hi! I am new to this forum and new to Dreamweaver. I recently used Dreamweaver to build a website to display my digital portfolio. I am not very good at this and don't understand much of this works. I inserted a spry horizontal menu bar for my navigation. I did change the original set up to have the background the colors I wanted and I also changed the size so it would go across the top of my page. This looks fine in Firefox and Safari but in Internet Explorer the bar displays vertically, which does not look good. Can anyone look at my code and tell me how I can fix this problem?
    I appreciate any help I can get with this as I have tried everything I know.

    Please forgive the ignorance of my questions but I am new to Mobile site design and Dreamweaver.
    I am trying to build a responsive web site for my company that can be viewed on multiple platforms, but am having trouble inserting a responsive menu and responsive slide show.
    This post is in regard to the  menu bar, which I have created using JQuery on a seperate page. I have managed to get the layout to work but still can't figure out how to create mouse overs for the links
    or how to insert it into my site.
    Please help.
    Why can't I see the nav bar in the site when I paste in?
    All I see is the text and no images. I know I am pasting the code in the wrong place.
    Where do I insert it?
    Below is the code for the site and below that is the code for the menu bar.

  • Horizontal Menu Bar Help Needed

    Hi there, I am somewhat new to web design but I've been helping a friend update his business's page recently.  We use Dreamweaver CS3 and our hosting is thru GoDaddy.
    My problem appears when I try to insert a horizontal menu bar (Insert>Spry>Menu bar) so that a dropdown menu will appear when I hover over an option, much like the top menu on the GoDaddy homepage, among others.  It works correctly when I preview my page in a browser from Dreamweaver, (Firefox, IE) but when I actually upload my page to the GoDaddy servers and view it, it shows up not as a bar with hidden options, but as a long unformatted vertical list.
    The site in question is here: http://www.notyouraveragebookkeeper.com/indextabs
    I thought it might be a problem with CSS, but I made sure that all of the style sheets are properly uploaded to the servers, and I made sure that my browser accepted any Javascript applets.  I've also tried it with my Dreamweaver CS5 trial.  Like I said, I am an amateur in every sense of the word and I'm still learning technical terms for things so some of my jargon may be a bit flawed.  I have done a good bit of online research in forums and otherwise, and I've tried solutions that have been given to similar problems. Maybe someone could view the source code and find out where I've gone wrong, or suggest tips to identify problems in Dreamweaver. I feel like the problem lies within the Spry framework, but I have very little knowledge on how it works or what it does.
    Any assistance in this regard would be extremely helpful and appreciated.

    Neither SpryMenuBar.js and SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css can be found by your online site.
    Possibly these have not been uploaded or uploaded to a wrong location.

  • Horizontal Menu Bar - Not displaying correctly in Internet Explorer

    My issues are occuring in Internet Explorer 8 and 7, haven't tested earlier versions.
    I am currently using DW CS5, Spry 1.6.1
    The website (not yet complete) is at www3.sympatico.ca/mitchell.richard/
    The menu bar as viewed in Firefox is correct. In Internet Explorer the menu bar is left justified, hides visited links, and lists horizontal menu items in reverse order.
    I work for a Women's Shelter in Canada, as the Information Systems Manager. We don't have the funds to hire someone to build a website and it was decided and I quote "You know computers, you can buld the website". I couldn't get them to understand the analogy that just because a Neurosurgeon can use a scalpel he isn't a Cardiothoracic Surgeon... needless to say, I am floudering on this menu bar. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    The red coloured line causes your menu to be displayed the wrong way round in FF. IE shows the menu as you have listed it with Contact Us as the first item.
    Advice:
    change the float to left so that the listed items start on the left hand side
    change the listed items in the order that you want them to appear.

  • Horizontal menu bar mac to pc

    Recently created this page:   http://musicnotes.net/MNI/SPRY.html using Dreamweaver CS3 but it does not look the same in all browsers.
    It starts out with the table width set for 100% and then hard sets the
    column widths to force the complete heading to something like 1600 pixels
    wide.  The cell widths should be allowed to set themselves.
    In IE 6.0, and probably IE 7.0, the mouse over point to change colors is a
    narrow strip between the links.  Results in white flashes as you move down.
    In IE 8.0, which is now similar to FireFox, the mouseover color changes work
    okay but the secondary panels overlap the primary column.  It's workable but
    doesn't look quite right.
    Except for being forced super wide and too big, everything seems to work
    okay in Firefox.
    Does anyone know if these issues are resolved using CS4.

    Thanks Gramps, will take a look and get sorted!

    Subject: I am having problems with my spry horizontal menu bar defaulting to the top of page in IE
    The structure of your document needs fixing. You will be able to get a lot of information from here http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/css.html
    After you have fixed the structure start with a fresh copy of SpryMenuBar. Read this before making any changes http://www.dwcourse.com/dreamweaver/ten-commandments-spry-menubars.php#one

  • Spry horizontal menu problem in IE and Chrome

    First I'd like to express my frustration with spry. I spend way too much time trying to "band-aid" spry to work in different browers. I'll admit that I'm new to the web game but I seem to spend a large percentage of my time simply trying different "fixes" to something that I don't think should be this much of a problem. Regardless ...
    I've made a pretty simple web page, put a spry horizontal menu on it and it works and displays just like it's supposed to in FF but IE and Chrome both seem to have a problem with it. Currently there are no links attached to it but that's not my problem - getting it to display correctly is. Possibly this issuehas already been addressed but I couldn't find it in the forum. Webpage can be viewed here
    I've put (what I believe to be) the relevant css on the Main Content section of the page. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    I am so glad that you started again, this is the best way to learn, trial and error.
    To fix your woes to date, have a look at the following
    .thrColFixHdr #header {padding:0;} /*remove the padding from the menubar container*/
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal{width:auto;margin:0;} /*remove the fixed width and auto margin*/
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal li{width:16.6667%;} /*spread the 6 items over the full width 6*16.6667% = 100%*/
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul a{text-align:left;} /*Set the the alignment back to left for any menu item links that are in a sub menu*/
    To add images to your menu items have a look at the following http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/samples/menubar/MenuBarSample.html, you will find it at the bottom of the page.
    I did not realise that SolidWorks still existed, started using it in the mid 1990's, excellent product, easy to use and promotes fast product development. I lost track of it when I went for retirement 10 years ago.

    Complete page and css code below (scroll down)
    All you should be concerned with at this moment to get the background image to appear in the top level anchor is the css style below:
    /* Menu items that have a submenu have the class designation MenuBarItemSubmenu and are set to use a background image positioned on the far left (95%) and centered vertically (50%) */
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal a.MenuBarItemSubmenu
    background-color: #000;
    background-image: url(../rot.jpg);
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    background-position: left top;
    I've added the background-postion because presumably you want it to appear flush left. This overides the out-of-the-box setting which positions it 95% far left.
