How can I disconnect the charging/sync cable if it's stuck?

The housing came apart -- lost a button and the other is askew. Now the phone won't release.

Some cables have release tabs on the sides, if present press these inwards, then just pull the cable out. I would just try to pull on one side first, get it to release. Then out it comes.
