How can I make a spread wider in CS6?

Question

I have code to resize a spread which is crashing. Is there a constraint imposed by the underlying pasteboard? If so how can I increase the width available for the spread? I'm running Windows 7, CS6 SDK. The crashing code is:
  PMRect newPasteBoard(-width/2, -depth/2, width/2, depth/2);
  UIDList items(spreadUIDRef);
  PMRectCollection newFrames;
  newFrames.push_back(newPasteBoard);
  result = Utils<Facade::IGeometryFacade>()->SetItemsBounds(
     items,
     Transform::PasteboardCoordinates(),
     Geometry::OuterStrokeBounds(),
     newFrames
     );//************** This call crashes. Width, depth are 10000 and 984

Forget the Alpha mask idea.  I'm home now and it is a total non starter in this case.  But try some of these if you want to learn the technique
