How can I offer individual password protected pdfs on my site.

I am building a site for a client of mine.  His business is a music talent agency.  He would like that on the page of the individual artist, there be a link to download a pdf that only that artist can download if he/she enters a correct password.  I think from reading other posts that I can simply offer a pdf download link and have that pdf password protected when I initially create the pdf itself in adobe acrobat.  Are there other ways of doing this or is that the best route to go?  All responses appreciated.

Hi,
For protecting PDFs, I am afraid you do need Acrobat, and here's how you accomplish applying password protection: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/acrobat-tips-and-tricks/protecting-your-pdf-using-a-password/
With this approach, you may have to reassign unique passwords to PDFs and ensure right passwords are communicated to the right people (there is not sign-in option) - that may be a bit of challenge.
Alternatively, with some basic scripting you could allow right people to download the right PDFs. This will need some mapping at the DB level.
Or, you could also leverage social media and use the OAuth mechanism to ensure that the users log in via social sites to download PDFs that are unique to them. Look forward to your thoughts.

  • How can I sign a password protected PDF doc?

I am trying to sign a password protected document, downloaded from a government site. I can use all button and drop-down menus and also validate the document but then, when I click on the line where I have to sign, there is only the cursor flashing and I cannot sign it. It seems that the document was created with version 8.1.7. and I have 11.0.02. Does anyone know what I have to do to sign this doc?

Is the thing you're clicking on a text field or a digital signature field?

How can I make a password protected encrypted sparse image?
Doing what worked in 2006 does not produce password protection even though I have typed one in and re-entered it as requested. Clicking on the Disk image opens it without asking for the password.  I am stumped.   Many thanks.

Yeah, nobody does. They should put up a custom password save box when you make an encrypted disk image that explains what will happen if you store the password in the keychain. In the current "how-to" article, they mention it, though: How to create a password-protected (encrypted) disk image - Apple Support

  • Can't read a password protected pdf created in windows on mac

I converted a word document to a pdf and password protected it with acrobat 9.  When the pdf is opened in mac preview only the first page is visible. all other are blank.  Would appreciate advice.

I can tell you in my testing that my results were consistent regardless of whether I typed the hyphen at the keyboard or pasted it in from a text document.
So, that still leaves us with "is this a bug?" or "is it a prohibited character?"
Obviously, in these days of concern over password strength, it is important to understand the range of available character set, so we can select effective (and legal) characters and not have to deal with the trial-and-error of trying to learn which characters to avoid.
I am also still confused as to why the exact same password, entered in the exact same manner succeeds on one platform and not another.  Unless the input dialog is silently converting the character (which I think could only be diagnosed with a debugger), results should be consistent.  After all, the "P" in PDF does stand for "Portable".
Do you have the resources to try and reproduce my test case?  I would be curious to know if the problem occurs both ways or just Mac->Windows.

  • How can my end user password-protect a document that has been digitally signed?

    Hello,
I have seen some threads that indirectly address parts of this question, but am still left unsure about whether this process can be done - and if it can, I could use your help in understanding it - thank you.
Two of our end users use digital signatures (certificate-based) in Acrobat 9 Pro to sign documents attesting the accuracy & calibration status of lab equipment for use in a legal environment.  These end users are concerned that their documents could be altered or edited, and asked me if password protection can also be applied to their documents that need to be digitally signed.
Thank you in advance for your advice.

Do you apply "Open" password or "Permissions" password or both? If you apply "Permissions" password (with or without the "Open" password) make sure that "Changes Allowed" include Filling in form fields and signing existing signature fields" or "Commenting, filling in form fields and signing existing signature fields". If permissions do not allow you to sign, you cannot sign.
Be aware of the alert that Acrobat pops up when you apply "Permissions" password that all Adobe products respect permissions that you set but that 3rd-party PDF Viewers may not (and many do not).
That is exactly what I was missing! I apply only "Permissions" password, but had the "Changes Allowed" drop-down set incorrectly - it was set to "None."  After changing that setting to allow "Filling in form fields and signing existing signature fields," the end user was able to digitally sign the document, her desired goal.
    Thank you so much.

  • How can I set up password-protected Guest account

    Hi everyone
I need to set up password-protected guest account. The aim is to get:
    a) an account with password. So only authorized person can use it.
    b) all changes in this account should be overwritten at log-off, just like Guest account behaves.
So I need either to find a way to set password for Guest, either create a 'normal' account and somehow automate it self-cleaning at logoff.
I tried to run terminal and use
    sudo su
    passwd Guest
    [entering password 123]
Afterwards I can't login as Guest at all. System doesn't ask for a password, nor logs me in.
    Thx for any help

This question was asked 2 years ago and still hasn't been answered.
If there is not a way to add a password to guest account, what is the script that get's executed when the Guest account log's off? I can execute that on an account that I create called 'localGuest' or something like that.
I have an enterprising member of my family who has figured out that my computer is exempt from the network curfew and they are using Guest to bypass that. I have since disabled guest; however, I do like using the fresh guest environment to test software development.

  • How to display in browser a password protected pdf file I created?

I created a password protected pdf file.
I want to display the file in browser so that viewers can only view it online.
It is better that viewers cannot download it.
But I donot know how to prevent viewers downloading the file.
Since the pdf is password protected, viewers don't have the password even they download it.
But how can I display the password protected pdf file in browser when I know the password?
Or is there a better to just viewers see the pdf file online and prevent them from downloading and printing it?

Any file on the web has to be copied to the local machine in order for the file content to be presented to the viewer. That's how the "www" is built.  So, to make use of your web based PDF the file has to be downloaded to the local machine. This might be to the local machine's temporary internet / browser cache or (via a 'save this to my computer') to some other location on the local machine's HDD. Bottom line -- web based files get downloaded this is the case for protected file or a non-protected file.
    Be well...

  • Open password protected PDF in website

    Hi,
I hope someone can help me. Greatly appreciate it.
My website has PDF documents that's available for registered users to view online (through my site) only.
Currently, I can't find any solutions to prevent users from downloading/"save-as" the PDF doc in their local drives, so I'm thinking of password-protecting these PDFs. This will ensure that they'd not be able to view the PDFs even though they download it and save-as local.
However, how do I open these password-protected PDFs on my site?
When I point/redirect to these PDFs, it will prompt for password.
It'd defeat all protection intent if I were to give the password to the user to enter, right?
    Example:
    1. Response.Redirect("mySecuredPdf.pdf")
    2. The browser will then prompt user for password.
What can I do in the CodeBehind to enable the server to OPEN the pdf, and at the same time, pass the correct password to the viewer to open without prompting?
I cannot remove password, because I want to prevent users from downloading and then opening it later, or redistributing the file.
    btw, i'm using ASP.NET.
    Please help.

There's a similar thread in the Acrobat Windows section, and the answer is the same - only a DRM system with a client UI (such as Adobe Digital Editions) can restrict the *use* of a file. You cannot prevent the client downloading and saving it, as otherwise they can't see it on their screen. The page you're reading now is not on a computer at Adobe - it's on yours.
    > What can I do in the CodeBehind to enable the server to OPEN the pdf, and at the same time, pass the correct password to the viewer to open without prompting?
I think you're getting the flow a little backwards - the PDF is 'opened' by the client, using their copy of Adobe Reader (or whatever). The webserver has nothing to do with the process other than blindly sending the file's 1s and 0s down a wire, so can't do anything to directly control the client's desktop applications.

Yup. You all are right. I ordered Adobe Acrobat today and the order is still processing. I can get to Adobe Acrobat.com but that too does not work. • Opening a password protected pdf

I can't open a password protected pdf through adobe reader..how do I go about opening it? I have the password.

    Thanks Pat for your interest.
Actually I am using Windows 8 (Not 8.1) and Adobe Reader Version XI (11.0.06)
Now, the exact problem I am facing is that there are certain types of pdf files I am being sent which are Password pritected (it may not be a necessary condition, i don;t know) and after I have keyed-in the correct password, it flashes the message- "Double-click here to open your file". Now while using the earlier versions of Adobe (or maybe Windows) I used to see a peculiar Pin-shaped object on the screen, double-clicking which used to open the file. That object is somehow missing this time, so I have no place to double-click. Therefore I am not able to open the file.I may add that I have recently moved to Windows 8 from XP, so my knowledge of Windows 8 is not up to mark. Can you please help?
