How can I stop safari from showing my old entries in a drop down menu?
I want to make it clear that I am not talking about the url bar. I am refering to suggestions within a webpage where stuff is entered (for example online homeowork for college students). I cannot seem to figure out how to stop safari from filling in my old entries.
How can I get rid of this box?
Have you checked the Safari Preferences > AutoFill settings? The Other forms setting is described as follows:
Let Safari save information you enter on webpage forms, then automatically fill in the saved information when you revisit the same webpages. To view or edit your saved information, click Edit.

How can I stop safari from auto completing url's on my iphone 4 and ipad2?
How can I stop safari from auto completing url's on my iphone 4 and ipad2? On both devices I have cleared history, I have gone into settings-safari-and cleared history and cleared cookies & data, tried turning my devices on and off and I also have private browsing turned on. Both devices are operating on iOS 5. When I type in a url I don't want anything to show and auto complete. Any suggestions?
This indicates corrupt files.

How can I stop Safari from opening new windows unless I want them?
Since Safari 5.02, there is no box to check in the General Preferences to stop Safari from opening a new window when I click on a link. My expectation is to only go to a new window when I want to do it. Most of my searches go down a rabbit hole and I just want to go backwards without closing page after new open page (Same problem with Tabs. I don't want new Tabs all the time either. In fact, the only time I really care about multiple open Tabs or Windows is when I need more than one Window open for data comparison or something like that...)
This is an incredibly annoying new behavior of Safari that I want to shut off. I have 20 windows open in the Window list right now. (I regularly shut off Safari to clear up all the useless abandoned windows.) Firefox doesn't do this, but I prefer Safari.
I tried to search this one, but maybe am not framing the question properly. See lots of discussion of forcing new tabs, but that is not what I am looking for....Can anyone help me?Thanks Baltwo,
I will try it, but I don't want new pages in tabs either. I simply don't want the link to open in a new page or tab unless I ask for one. My initial trial has google links opening in new tabs. Why can't I just go down the paths on the same page like the old days? Especially after I find what I want, I will go somewhere else.
With your recommendation, I think that instead of pages open, I will have an abundance of tabs?
Guess I am getting inflexible in my old age. If this is the only option, it is an "improvement" that I don't like yet.
Firefox doesn't do it. -
Ever since I've upgraded to OS X Mavericks, I've had these strange files show up on my desktop. The trouble is that they show up even a little while after I delete them. Here's a few examples:
141441.jpg.part
IMG00019-20111209-2353.jpg.part
IMG00062-20120927-2351.jpg.part
I've done a few virus scans, but they showed no viruses. Why are these files always popping up and how can I prevent them from appearing on my desktop again? You need to delete Bitdefender from your Mac. It will cause you nothing but problems.
Removing Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac
The best way to prevent malware from being installed on your Mac is to enable Gatekeeper.
Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy then select the General tab.
Make sure either Mac App Store or Mac App Store and identified developers is selected. If that area is grayed out, click the padlock icon to proceed.

How can I stop Safari from opening 99 tabs automatically
When I first start up Safari - it automatically opens a huge number of tabs (the drop down menu on a tab right click shows an option to bookmark 99 tabs - and there are more tabs opened than I care to count). They appear to all be existing bookmarks; but could also be history.
At one point it would not let me close it at all & because it wouldn't close the OS would not allow a shutdown. So I had to do a hardware power off instead.
I played around with the setting and finnally - after severl hard reboots and a lot of try this & try that - I got it to allow itself to be closed.
But the 99+/- auto opens continue to be a problem. I've tried to completely clear my history, and several other property adjustments - but overall the behaviour remains very very flakely.
I want to make it my default browser on all my Apple things (Macbook / iTouch / iPad) but the very bad behaviour keeps pushing me back to Firefox - sigh. It feels like a very bad user design that cannot be trusted.
Are there some obvious know gotcha's with this browser? Or some standard settings that should never be touched? Or are these common bugs that just don't work right? Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
How can I stop iPhoto from showing Events?
HI Folks,
I've used iPhoto for a long time, and I am just completely frustrated at the existence of "Events."
Every single time I take a photo and import it, I get a new event.
Even worse, I have hundreds of unnamed "Events" because that method of organizing my photos makes no sense at all.
When I import, there are generally multiple "events" documented in one import.
Now I have to spend hours breaking up Events into smaller "Events" just to have it makes sense.
Not very useful.
The worst usability offense with Events, is that iPhoto defaults to displaying the Events page when it opens.
Apple...I don't EVER want to see my photos organized by Events. EVER.
MY questions:
1. Please please tell me how I can remove the Events page completely.
2. If that is not possible, please tell me how I can tell iPhoto to default to showing me the Photos page, NOT the Events page.
3. Also, how can I view my photos on the Photos page without being broken up into events? (Without losing metadata like the date)
Thanks,
-The Craw, former Apple Technical Writer GuyA good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.
Make sure show event titles is off
and you can merge or split events to make them more useful - you can not "turn them off" since they are just one of several optional views of your photos

How can I stop Safari from rampant memory use?
This is the standard error I get whevener I open up a web page with Safari. The address of the object differs however.
6/19/13 WebProcess[304]: objc[304]: Object 0x7fe04a41c7d0 of class NSUserDefaults autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking - break on objc_autoreleaseNoPool() to debug
And indeed, I have left Safari open for about 2.5 hours with 6 tabs open and it has just been leaking. I have 8 gm RAM installed. I currently have 2.1 GB free.
I have the a few apps open in the background, but none of these are running tasks that are leaking.
I know many people had complained of this same leak in Lion, but Apple supposedly addressed it. I have had this problem with every version of ML up to the current (I am running 10.8.4). I installed the latest version of Java. I have gone through all the standard troubleshooting and even did a clean wipe and reinstallation a few weeks ago. I ran an extended apple hardware test (memory + gfx cards, logic board=fine), as well as a full block scan of my HDD (clean)-clearly this is a software and not a hardware problem.
Though Java/flash are eating up memory, they are not leaking. It is specifically Safari Web Content which is leaking. I think this may have to do with OSX endlessly sandboxing web content/ some sort of garbage collection issue.
One last interesting thing. Looking at the activity monitor, I have seen a couple times Web content's VM jump for a split second to 16 EB (yes exabytes)...the max amount of memory that a 64b processor could hypothetically address...not sure what that's all about...
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. See below Screenshot + etrecheck info + Safari Web Content open file list : Thanks.

This is the warning, which appears everytime I start up Safari. The PID and HEX address vary everytime, but always relate to Webprocess.
Running the cmd: "leaks PID -nostacks -nocontext" yields the following output (seebelow). I guess I should run the dylib update. I can try and see if still occurs...?

How can I sort Bookmarks by name A-Z in the bookmarks drop down menu?
I have tried organize by name but it doesnt give an apply option and doesnt take effect
Sorting Bookmarks in the Library window (Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks) is for temporary display. The Bookmarks are not permanently sorted.
To permanently sort, open the Bookmarks Sidebar (Ctrl+B opens or closes the Bookmarks Sidebar ---- Cmd+B in OSX), right-click (Cmd+click in OSX) the "Bookmarks Menu" folder and choose "Sort by Name". See: <br />

Under the older iOS, when you opened a blank Safari page, Bookmarks automatically opened. However, with the newer iOS, this does not happen anymore. What iPhone and version of iOS do you have?

How do I stop Safari from refreshing?
How can I stop it from refreshing when:
1) When I press the "back" button, I want it to load what it has previously saved, not to reload the whole page again... this takes much longer and takes up bandwidth
2) When I open the page again after a while: say I have 4-5 pages of different web pages, and when I open one of the pages that I haven't opened for a few minutes it'll load again when I try to go to that page... again, this takes much longer and takes up bandwidth
So how can I tell Safari just to show me what it has previously loaded and tell it to stop refreshing everything? It's quite annoying.
Thanks in advance!I've submitted feedback on this, and posted in another thread. This reloading issue is a real problem for using mobile boarding passes on airlines which support them, such as Continental and American. You may be able to present your boarding pass and scannable bar code at the bag check or security, but by the time you get to the gate, Safari will decide to reload the airlines' web page with your pass. Of course, this confuses the airlines' servers, and it takes several attempts (and minutes) to recall the correct page.
This unrequested reload is a real issue - it breaks the utility of Safari and the iPhone for this application, and many other web sites which have issues with a reload. -
Although I'm connected to my Wi-Fi network my computer keeps "looking for new networks." How can I stop it from doing so when I'm working at home and don't want another network?
You might want to update Safari to 3.12. I would empty the safari cache. (Safari>Empty Cache). Then quit Safari. System Preferences>Network>Show:Airport>TCP/IP. Insert the following into the DNS Servers box;
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
then hit apply. Now launch Safari. You should also try powering down modem, router and Mac and power up in 2 minute sequence; modem, router, Mac. -

How do I stop Safari from 'pinwheeling' whenever I try to use Yahoo Mail?
I really need a correct answer please. Other answers have only suggested how to access Yahoo Mail without using Safari. I want to continue using Safari to access Yahoo Mail,if possible. Thank you.Could be a cookie issue...
Go to Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab then click Show Cookies
Type yahoo in the serach field then click Remove All > Done
Quit then relaunch Safari.
Try accessing your Yahoo mail account.
FYI... there is rarely a sure fire correct response for third party web based email client software. Often takes time consuming troubleshooting. -
I have an iphone 4 that keeps deleting my notes. How can I stop this from happening?
I have an iphone 4 that keeps deleting my notes. How can I stop this from happening? I've had my phone over 2 years and only in the past 2 months has it started deleting notes. Now they are all deleted, but thankfully still in my email, but only on a computer.
I guess he/she open Notes in Gmail settings. This archives (one way sync) notes in gmail account under notes label that is invisible if you are using the standard gmail setup on your iPhone. You can see it on desktop browser, Safari or gmail app in iDevice. Am I wrong?
