How can I use a VI to perform a function in another, parallel running program on Windows XP?

I have a state machine based VI that moves moves a sampling actuator into exhaust gases that we would like to sample. One of the states is a sampling process where our diagnostic equipment (gas chromatograph) sucks in the sample and analyzes it. Unfortuntately, the GC is so old, that I can't find a way to make a Labview driver for it. However, it does have its own software that can trigger it.
If I was to do it manually, I would just click a button on the GC's program that says "Sample". What I would like to do is have my Labview VI do this autonomously ever time it gets to the sampling state. I have a feeling this involves the Windows API or DirectX but I have absolutely no clue on where I can look to perform such an operation.
Would anybody be able to offer me any assitance, know-how or direction for this vexing question?

In the absence of drivers, a rather nasty way to achieve this would be to ensure that your software always occupies the same portion of the screen such that you know the position of the 'sample' button. You could then simulate a mouse click at those coordinates when you require a sample to be taken.
This would not be a robust solution as a user could move or minimise the window, or other windows could also find their way into the critical position and cause the application to work incorrectly or cause unexpected things to happen.
However, if you just need a short term work around this method might be acceptable, just be aware of the risks if you try it.
Searching for simulate mouse clicks and having a play is the way forward.

I need my presentation users to take a screen shot of a slide within my presentation. I know that windows 8 has a new function that allows a screen shot to be taken and saved directly to the user's computer and I need a button that can be placed on a slide and perform this function. I think Ajit may have misunderstood your need. The command he told you about triggers the Print command to allow you to print the currently active slide (on a laser or inkjet printer). This does not have the same result as you would get by hitting the PrintScreen button on your keyboard (to take a screencapture and have it saved to the Clipboard for pasting somewhere else).
You can add a button to your slide and set the PrintScreen key as the shortcut, but this will NOT mean that clicking the button will cause a screencapture to be taken.
There are JavaScript libraries that will allow you to execute JavaScript code in a Captivate project that can take a screen capture:

However, to implement these solutions you would need to be quite knowledgeable with setting up JavaScript. It's not for newbies.

How can i use an external screen on mountain lion when i'm running on battery power?

Hey all:
I just upgraded from snow leopard to Mountain Lion, and i use external screen, keyboard and mouse all the time....
On Mountain Lion it's perfect when the power adaptor is connected as soon as you close the LID your external screen becomes the primary screeen and it's fully functional desktop (no mirroring or extension screen)
But the problem is when i'm in battery power, in snow leopard i used to close my lid my mac goes to sleep then i wake it up using the mouse and immediately open the LID so it doesn't go to sleep again and now i'm running on battery power with a primary external screen.
Any idea how to use an external screen on mountain lion while i'm on battery power? (i know i can use mirroring but i want just 1 primary screen and the laptop screen would be turned off )

Hi Edson,
Yes you need to use the CALC_ERROR macro function to be able to test whether the last macro function returned an error. CALC_ERROR will return an 'X' if there an error occured during the execution of the last macro function.
You can use a macro similar to the following:

Let me explain how this works internally. The SAP system maintains a global variable g_flg_calc_error during the execution of macros in the planning book. The g_flg_calc_error variable will contain the value of f_calc_error that was set by the last macro function which executed. The ABAP coding of a planning book is something like this:
data: g_flg_calc_error type /SAPAPO/FLAG.
* SAP will pass g_flg_calc_error variable to all macro
* functions. When SAP calls a macro function, it does

The CALC_ERROR macro function just checks the value of f_calc_error parameter (w/c in fact is the value of the g_flg_calc_error variable) and returns "true/X" if the f_calc_error was set to true by the last macro function.

you misunderstood me apparently. I said you can't organinze to tables so one serves as a node's value of the other. Let me show you wnat I suggested by an example.
First table has such values:
-A
|-B
|-C
and the second one is
-x
|-y
|-z
-p
|-r
|-s
I thought you wanted to confine relationships between them so fo B node be able to select only x's branch and for C - only p's branch. If it's similar to the truth then let's create another table with two fields. Field one points to table containing capital letters and field two - lower case letters. Both fields are of type lookup pointing to an hierachial tables. Now when you populate this table you'll create records like (I list two columns):
B - y
B - z
C - r
C - s
from your orinal table from now you should point to the above table. So instead of having two fields each pointing to its own table and compeling you to think how to organize two hierarchies, now you have only one field pointing to a table with all valid combinations. When you populate this table though YOU have to decide what such combinations are. It may make sense (if you have different users) to restrict access to this table on read-only level for regular users to preserve the valid combinations.

Does anybody have an example of using one JSP for both editing and creating an object? I am pretty sure I can handle most of it, but am not sure about how I can specify different messages from the resource bundle (i.e. modifying the screen title for the different uses, "New Campaign" vs. "Edit Campaign").
My background is in PHP and DHTML (i.e. more front-end) and I'm just starting with Java and JSF. As such, I want to be sure that I'm using appropriate patterns for my programming.

I make the difference between modifying an existing object and a new one by the ID in the object. Each object has a unique ID in my app assigned by the database. So if the ID is 0, the user is creating a new object, not stored in the DB yet. I store the object to be edited/modified in the session before displaying the page:

I don't have OpenOffice Calc on my computer, but I believe it can save to a .xls file. Since TestStand's property loader can read .txt, .csv and .xls files, if you can save your OpenOffice spreadsheet to a .txt, .csv or .xls file, you can use TestStand's property loader with that file. To make sure you're using the proper formatting, I'd recommend exporting some properties to the file type of your choice so you can see what the spreadsheet should look like.

How can I use an external USB drive on my Macmini with Boot Camp and Lion/Windows 7?

I have a MacMini (Last model with a disk drive). The Mini has Lion and Windows 7 installed using Boot Camp. I want to attach a 350GB, USB, HP Personal Storage Device (Hard Drive) to the computer and be able to use it in both Lion and Windows 7 mode. The USB drive is formatted for Windows 7. I only want to use it for storage and back-up purposes for both operating systems. It would be nice if I could access the total disk from either system without having to reboot to change operating systems to view Windows 7 files and reboot again to view Lion files. Can anyone offer any guidance or any informational websites to help me? Thank you for any help!!

What aspect of Microsoft Office? Office is a suite of programs... Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.
You've got several potential options. Libre Office and Open Office (both googleable) are 'open source,' free, downloadable programmes that will open most MS Office programmes and perform many of the functions of MS Office. Might be an idea to have a look round for reviews (etc) first, to see if they sound like they'll match your needs.
If you're keen to use the App Store, there's Apple's own suite of programmes: Pages, Numbers and Keynote. They're a word processor, spreadsheet programme, and presentation-type programme with similar functions to Word, Excel and Powerpoint respectively. They're pretty good for most functions, and are better integrated with Macs than MS programmes. They're excellent programmes for what they do, and relatively cheap (about £14 each?).
But if you're heavily reliant on MS, want ALL the bells and whistles of MS, or need to regularly transfer files between MS programmes on other computers and your laptop / desktop computer, then they might not be the best of ideas. Keynote - IME - can have some difficulties in transferring formatting to Powerpoint.
Finally, there's MS Office Mac 2011. You can't download MS Office from the App Store, but can order the CDs from most online stores (including Apple's own store). It might be worth price hunting - if you're a student, you can usually find the programmes relatively cheap (£38 at the moment on Software4Students, though you'll need to belong to an academic institution / have a UK .ac email address). Apple's own prices on MS software are unlikely to be the best prices out there (though the product will be identical).
MS Office includes Word, Excel and Powerpoint in the basic version. The slightly more expensive version (which, I think, is the £38 one on S4S) includes Outlook. Which - IME - is far more of a nuisance than Apple's native Mail programme.
(I should probably add - I'm an academic. I own both Apple's own programmes, and MS Office 2011. I tend to use the MS programmes more, if only because they're the ones that other people tend to use, and transferring between Apple and MS programmes is a minor inconvenience. Pages also lacks Garamond, my favourite work font. The Apple progs are, however, far more beautifully integrated, and would be MORE than good enough for most users...)
