How can my java program launch other applications?

can anyone link me, provide some keywords, or information on how a java program can execute another program... for example, a button click would launch acrobat, firefox, or (in particular) another java application.

don't read all that much fantasy.
I've read Eddings' Belgariad and Malloreon, which I really liked at the time but which are not even in the same league as GRRM. The characters are much more one-dimensional, and the plot gets cornier as you go along.
IVE READ BELGARIOD... AGREE THAT IT WAS PRETTY SHALLOW AND I READ IT AFTER LOTR SO IT WAS SUCH A PALE RIPOFF IN COMPARISON
His Elenium and Tamuli series were a little better, but still far from Ice and Fire.
Tolkein, of course, but you've probably heard of him. :-)
Donaldson's Mirror of Her Dreams and A Man Rides through were good.
HAVENT READ THESE, WILL ADD TO MY LIST, THANKS!
Terry Brooks' Shanara series is supposed to be pretty good, and I think Anne McCaffery's Dragonriders of Pern series is considered to be among the classics, but I've never read either one.
READ SOME BROOKS AND FOUND IT SHALLOW LIKE EDDINGS. HAVE READ MCCAFFERY BUT NOT DRAGONRIDERS, AND THE TRILOGY I READ WAS OK BUT THE TONE WAS REALLY GOOFY. A GROUP OF REFUGES ON A NEW PLANET AT A TIME WHEN THE HUMAN RACE IS ENSLAVED BY ALIENS, AND THE BOOK SEEMED TO FOCUS ON HOW FUN BUILDING A CAMP WAS ON THE NEW PLANET AND EVERYONE WAS REALLY PEPPY WHICH FELT ODD GIVEN THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE SETTING.
Michael Moorcock's Elric series was very good, also very dark. It was kind of... I don't know... odd. Like you'd want to light up a bong and put on some Floyd while reading it.
HAVENT READ EITHER, ANOTHER FOR THE LIST, THANKS AGAIN!
There's another series of 2 or 3 books that I read a few years ago and really liked, but I can't for the life of me remember the author, the books, any characters names...
P.S. If you want to talk about a nag of a female character, you gotta love (as in hate) Cersei. She gets her on POV in Feast. Good stuff.
YEAH I LIKE CERSEI ACTUALLY. GRRM IS GOOD IN HOW THERE REALLY IS NO MAIN CHARACTER AND EVERYONE IS VERY EXCITING TO READ. RJ ON THE OTHERHAND HAS A DEFINATE CENTRAL CHARACTER TO THE PLOT, AND CHAPTER AFTER CHAPTER OF SOME OF THE FEMALE POV'S GOT AGGRAVATING ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY NAG SO MUCH THE TRUER HEROS OF THE STORY (MY OPINION)... ITS LIKE, SHUT YOUR MOUTH AND LET THEM SAVE THE DAY ALREADY... HEHE... BUT YOU'LL SEE OR HAVE A DIFFERENT OPINION ENTIRELY.
to you i recommend orson scott card... you've probably read ender's game but he has some really good fantasy too... the homecoming series (first book call of earth or memory of earth) was really good, and the alvin maker series is ok plotwise but the characters are incredible... i found a lot of humor and witty dialog in that series and enjoyed it immensely. anyways, thanks again for the list additions, will read feast of crows first, hopefully soon. glad to hear you're liking it... some reviews on amazon weren't stellar.

  • How to use java output with other application

    hi ,
    I am using acme.crypto to encrypt data. this is completely written in java. i need to pass input to this using VB6 and return the output to VB6
    how can i achieve the same, is there any readily available dll that can be used in vb?
    I am rigorously searching solution, which i am not finding.
    I need to know how should i place the java code so that it could be used with VB, as i am new to java world. Do i need to create component using java bean or how?
    The code i refered above is nothing but encryption algorithm. I need to pass the input string from vb to java, which will process me the output which inturn should be passed to vb6.
    Kindly guide me through this.

    Why not create a Java ServerSocket in your Java program.
    Connect the VB program to this ServerSocket.
    Send the input to the Java Program over this socket and have the Java Program encrypt the information and pass it back on the same socket.
    Don't know how hard Sockets are in VB6 but a Server Socket in Java is simple.
    No need for new DLLs, JNI, etc.

    Hello all,
    I'm just a new Java user, I hope that it is a right place to ask silly some questions:
    1> Recommend JMK books: We are using the Forte CE 3.0 and JMK2.1.1 "Multimedia kit" for audio and MIDI application. Could anyone please recommends some good practical books, especialy on Java MIDI/MCI apps?
    2> Can't launch Forte CE: It seems to have problem on one of our PCs, the error message like "Cannot load jvm.dll" on the 98SE, It was working fine before. I have other setup just works great on Wins-2000 (other PCs). What is wrong? how do I fix it? Please advice.
    3> How do I pack the java project to various platform-client-user? Let say on the Porte project, I'm using traditional AWT and beans coding, I know it works here PCs. I want to ensure it will work with other platform SPARC, HP, Intel-PC or MAC. Question is what do they(clients) need in order to use our Java application programs, I know we can generate a single .exe file for PC-Winsdows, what about others (Sun, HP, Mac)? Any version compatible issue that we should be aware of?

    Hi members...
    Please...please...please...
    If any one now how i can call java program in VB.net program and open it ,please i want now the way to do it by details and by examples and step step to do it ,,..
    thanks ...

    If your server does not return to the command prompt, write a java programm which starts your server and returns to the command prompt.
    An example for an application like this:
    import java.io.IOException;
    public class StartApp
    public static void main(String[] args)
    if (args.length > 0)
    StringBuffer cmd = new StringBuffer();
    for (int index = 0; index < args.length; index++)
    cmd.append(args[index] + " ");
    try
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd.toString());
    catch (IOException ioe)
    System.out.println("Error: command not found: " + cmd.toString());
    else
    System.out.println("Error: missing arguments");
    An example for starting your server with that programm:
    /usr/bin/java -jar ./StartApp.jar /usr/bin/java -jar ./myServer.jar
    It works. Have fun.

  • How can I know the version of Application Server Java Virtual Machine

    How can I know the version of Application Server Java Virtual Machine?
    Thanks a lot.

    Thats easy. Your jdk/jre are located in the App Server home directory. Just run the java command under the jdk directory with the "-version" switch and it will provide you with detailed information about your VM.
    For example if you're doing it at command prompt it will be something like
    java -versionI hope this will be useful to you.

  • Firefox 4.0 has disabled Trendmico Toolbar and 2 other items. How can I return to prior Firefox application?

    I installed new Firefox 4.0 and it automatically disabled Trend Micro tool bar 3.1.1110, Trend Micro NSC Firefox Extension 6.5.0.1234 and HP Smart Web Printing 4.6.0 since they wer "not compatible.
    How can I return to my previous application of Firefox?

    Did you try the add-on compatibility reporter? https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/15003/
    Firefox 4.0 beta 1 installs to a separate directory, so unless you uninstalled it, your previous Firefox install should be there. Just find it in the start menu and run it, allowing it to set itself back as the default browser.
    If you did uninstall it, just install it again: [[Installing Firefox]].
    You can but don't have to uninstall 4.0 via Add/Remove Programs

    Using Java is their any way to get the input stream of another applicaton?. For example i will start a java program and minimize it. Then i will start a notepad and type some thing in it. Java program should print all matters i am typed in notepad.
    Is it possible using java?
    Thanks in advance

    You have many ways to do that in C++. Read about Hooks and you will understand how u can do that. Anyway, even without hooks, u can get the messages from other applications in C++. So, let C++ get the data from other applications for you and let ur java program get data from the C++ program.

  • How can my client program call program located at server?

    Hi All,
    I have a client-server application. How can my client program call program located at server?
    At the beginning my program works as long as RSA Agentinstalled at client. So my program only call rsa library and communicate with RSA Agentby passing userid and passcode. Once RSA Agent receive it will send to RSA Managers to validate.
    But now my user want the RSA Agent installed in my Server. I wondering how to do that as the library given will only detect local RSA Agent. So I'm thinking to separte the library and create new project. Then in this project as a medium to pass userid and passcode. This project I will compile and allocate to server. Then my programs will call the new program i created by passing userid and passcode. I wondering can I do that?
    Thanks in advance.

  • How can I get back into my application aftermath invoking Start up page of index.htm ?

    Gorgeous Hello All,
    If anyone of you can please provide me a solution for the following, will help me in plentious and galore.
    Am using Adobe RoboHelp, Version 10 and IE version being 10.
    A hurdle :-
    I have a application which has been developed in ASP .NET, Version 4.0. Help link has been created in this application wherein here the Start up page of index.htm has been linked to be read from the RoboHelp local project folder\!SSL!\Multiscreen_HTML5\desktop. All are working absolutely fine except when
    I login into the above-said application -> click on the Help page -> the index.htm opens with Contents, Index, Glossary -> Am able to successfully perform any task by respective clickings
    -> But I am not able to get back into my application when I click on the IE provided Back button (Alt+Left) -> Any amount of invoking Back button makes the system getting looped into this Start up page of index.htm only -> When I Close Tab (Ctrl + W) or Close ( X ) -> The window session gets closed and I have to repeat all by relogin once again.
    How can I get back into my application aftermath invoking Start up page of index.htm ?
    (I can always get back into the application easily by erasing those parts in the url which refers to this RoboHelp linkages – but this certainly looks non-polished work)
    Help Please

    Hey Jeff, I used Internet Explorer 10.0.9200 and Google Chrome 26.0.1410. Alas - it is the same behavior.
    (But Jeff : When I used Microsoft HTML Help as primary layout to generate chm file , My Help when launched from my Application opened in a new browser window and when I closed this Help browser window did not close my application. Looks like need to write few liner code to get this issue settled )
    Thanks Indeed of lots for your concerns Jeff !!!

  • Can a java program be run in the background?

    Hi all,
    Can a java program be run in the background without the user being aware of it? I need to make a program that continuosly monitors a pc at regular intervals and runs at all time. It should be hidden(shouldn't display on the screen while running) from the user, and also, can it be run as a system file so that even if a user checks he/she would think of it as a system file?

    I'm the administrator of all the computers. Then as I said there are commercial applications that do that.
    Presumably you expect a problem now. And implementing an acceptable solution is going to take you months. Because not only need to 'hide' the application, you also need to set up all the monitoring and logging capability. And the first will require quite a bit of JNI work along with testing (in particular as it could interfer with existing applications on the users computers.)
    I need to
    install the software in all the machines and i want
    that the users who use the machine should not be able
    to close the program through the task manager. If the users have admin rights then they can terminate a windows service.
    And if they don't have admin rights then you can simply turn off the ability to install anything.
    I want
    to know what the resources of the computers are and
    that if anyone has added a resource to it or
    not(attaching a flash usb thumbdrive etc). Lots of JNI.

    This depends on the version of your Netweaver Java AS. If you are running 7.0, you will have to use the Jco framework. The Jco framework is deprecated since 7.1 though. If you want to build a RFC server in 7.1 or higher, it is adviced that you set it up through JRA.
    Implement an RFC server in 7.0:

  • How to run java program from website?

    Hello
    I'd like to know how to run java program from my web page.
    I'd like to push some button in this web page so java program that would be on my server
    would pop-up. Can it be done automaticaly upon running this web site? (without any buttons - I just enter website and program pops up).
    Cheers

    I rather thought about RMI. But I could try servlets. So how it would look like?.
    I would make http request in browser (enter address) and program would show up in its window?. And I would not have to change anything in my program?. This program would run then on both boxes?. One remotely and one not?.
    But I would have to learn some basics, I've never worked with servlets. Could you suggest some good sites about it?. With ready examples so I could tweak them to my purpose.

    I already know how to access database by JDBC, but I don't know how to call java program by HTML page.

    This code goes with the tutorial from this web page
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/jdbc/basics/applet.html
    good luck.
    * This is a demonstration JDBC applet.
    * It displays some simple standard output from the Coffee database.
    import java.applet.Applet;
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    import java.util.Vector;
    import java.sql.*;
    public class OutputApplet extends Applet implements Runnable {
    private Thread worker;
    private Vector queryResults;
    private String message = "Initializing";
    public synchronized void start() {
         // Every time "start" is called we create a worker thread to
         // re-evaluate the database query.
         if (worker == null) {
         message = "Connecting to database";
    worker = new Thread(this);
         worker.start();
    * The "run" method is called from the worker thread. Notice that
    * because this method is doing potentially slow databases accesses
    * we avoid making it a synchronized method.
    public void run() {
         String url = "jdbc:mySubprotocol:myDataSource";
         String query = "select COF_NAME, PRICE from COFFEES";
         try {
         Class.forName("myDriver.ClassName");
         } catch(Exception ex) {

         return;
         try {

                                  "myLogin", "myPassword");
         Statement stmt = con.createStatement();
         ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery(query);
         while (rs.next()) {
              String s = rs.getString("COF_NAME");
              float f = rs.getFloat("PRICE");
              String text = s + " " + f;
              results.addElement(text);

         con.close();
         setResults(results);
         } catch(SQLException ex) {
         setError("SQLException: " + ex);
    * The "paint" method is called by AWT when it wants us to
    * display our current state on the screen.
    public synchronized void paint(Graphics g) {
         // If there are no results available, display the current message.
         if (queryResults == null) {
         g.drawString(message, 5, 50);
         return;
         // Display the results.
         g.drawString("Prices of coffee per pound: ", 5, 10);
         int y = 30;
         java.util.Enumeration enum = queryResults.elements();
         while (enum.hasMoreElements()) {
         String text = (String)enum.nextElement();
         g.drawString(text, 5, y);
         y = y + 15;
    * This private method is used to record an error message for
    * later display.
    private synchronized void setError(String mess) {
         queryResults = null;
         message = mess;

    I might be doing some programming for my company soon
    which will require a program to monitor a database
    and whenever there is a change to certain fields, it
    must copy certain fields into another database. When I see "whenever thiere is a change to certain fields" I tend to think "triggers" - but maybe this won't work for you 'cause of the "another database" part. And the fact that triggers are inherently evil.

    Is it possible to run a Java program as a windows
    service? And if so then how would you go about it? I'd hit Google - there're a couple ways to do this.
    [snip]
    Also,...if I were to use one of those programs which
    can make an .exe of a Java program, then do you still
    require the JRE to be on the machine? It depends on how you did the conversion. If you compile to native then no, if you just wrap up a JRE then yes.
    Why I ask is
    that I occasionally get asked to do small development
    projects for my company, but we are a microsoft
    partner and therefore do all the development in C#
    and the like. So I would like to just implement as
    many things in Java as I can, just to show everyone
    that Java can do exactly what C# can do. But its
    difficult to convince people of this since I always
    require the JRE and they dont. Of course, they require the .NET framework and you don't. And last I looked that thing was around 23 Meg.
