How do I alter a file's "kind" attribute?

Hi,
I've been looking all over for an answer to this issue, including this forum and including calling apple technical support (who couldn't help because it wasn't a software issue), so I have had no luck. I really hope somebody here can help me!!
I have many files, each with the .dat extension. But the file "kinds" for these files are all different: textedit document, text, xcode etc This means that they are all treated differently by the system, and (importantly for me) quicklook. (They also indicate this by having different icons).
This has knockon effects with different software I use them with, and it's really slowing down my workflow.
I need a way to tell OSX "all files with the .dat extension have the file kind "text' " or something to that effect.
Checking in "Get Info" shows the files kind, but has no way to edit it.
I have tried changing the software used to open the files (in Get Info, apply as default etc) - so for example making all .dat files open in textedit - their 'kind' remains the same (whatever it was before I tried doing it).
I have tried opening the files in textedit (for example) and saving them again - their kind remains the same.
I have tried creating a new file in xcode with the .dat extension (it just says it is a textedit file).
I actually have no idea how I created the file with the 'text' file type now - this is the only one which is viewable in quicklook.
I have hundreds (literally) of these .dat files, I really need a way to use them with quicklook, ie I just need to change their kind to "text".
Any help would be much appreciated... I'm going round in circles here...

"Kind" is really a metadata tag, not an attribute.
You can see this in Terminal with mdls <filename>
For a PDF Document, you will see: kMDItemKind = "Portable Document Format (PDF)"
You'll need to look into metadata editors to see if there is any solution to your problem. (I had a similiar issue awhile back, and was never able to find a solution).
If you only need to use quicklook, see if the command line utility "qlmanage" can help. (for example, in Terminal qlmanage -p filename)
Look at the options with "qlmanage -h" (and also man qlmanage) . There is an option to "Force the content type used for the documents". If you can somehow get this to work in Terminal, then you can easily turn it into a Service with a Hotkey so that you can have a custom quilklook for your file.
Also, you might be better off asking this in the "Mac OS X Technologies" UNIX forum.

It looks like the IP address field is incorrectly set.,
It should be as follows
{Device IP},{Device Subnet Mask}, etc etc
so a practical example of the aboove could be (i dont know if this is completely correct after the IP address / Subnet Mask)

How can I copy a file with all attributes

Is there a way within Java to copy a file, with all its file attributes?
I have seen a number of custom methods posted on these forums for copying the contents of a file to a new file with the same name in another location. The problem is that these methods don't copy the file attributes, particularly the creation date.
If there is no way to do this in Java, is there a way to have Java execute an operating system command, such as "COPY" or to access the O/S to change the file attributes?

How to design Flat file for loading attribute dimension in a planning application

Dear Gurus,
I have a requirement to extract attribute dimensions from an essbase application and load it to another planning application. I have a dimension called Program and two attribute dimensions Sales Manager, Accounts manager associated with Program dimension in Essbase application. I will Extract these dimensions using Essbase outline extractor. After Extracting the attribute dimensions I have to load these dimensions to planning applications using outline load utility. Kindly guide me how to design the flat file for loading attribute dimensions in planning application.

You could dig through the docs and try to figure out the file format manually, or you could do this the easy way. Simply use the Outline Load Utility to export your attribute dimension from Planning. The export file format is the same as the import file format. You might have to manually add a couple of test members to your attribute dimension so that your export file has some content. Then simply update the file you exported, and import it.
(I am assuming you have already manually created the Attribute dimension in Planning, and that you simply need to add members to it.)

I forgot to mention that she has a PC at her house that she also syncs to. Would this cause a problem. I am already getting that pop up saying that the iPod is synced to another library (even though she is signed in with her Apple ID to iTunes) and gives the pop up to Cancel, Erase & Sync, or Transfer Purchases. My question arose because she clicked on "Erase & Sync" by mistake when she plugged the iPod to her PC the first time. When the iPod was purchased and setup, it was synced to my PC first. When she went home, she hooked it up to her PC and then she erased it by accident. I was able to restore all the missing stuff yesterday using my PC. However, even after doing that it still told me the next time I hooked it up last night that the iPod was currently synced with a different library. Hopefully, you can help me understand all this. She wants to sync her iPod and also backup her iPod at both places. Both PCs have been authorised. Thanks

How to Move a Video File from Movie Section to "TV Shows" Section

I have an Ipod classic, and am trying to figure out how to move a video file from the "Movie" section to the "Tv Shows" section. I have Itunes version 1.3 which for my device is listed as the most current version.

to clarify that, I think he would have an ipod classic 80gb which the newest version is 1.3 I think.
However to answer your question, in itunes right click the movie, go to properties, then go to options, where it has media kind put it to tv show

How to open a .MAT file in LABVIEW

Hey everyone,
I currently have a .MAT image file which I would like to open in LABVIEW to apply some image filters. However, I am unsure as to how to open the .MAT file in LABVIEW. Ideally I would like to be able to open the .MAT file without using matlab, and it seems the only way to accomplish this task is through the mathscript node. I have attached an example of the image im trying to open, as well as the LABVIEW program which I would like to use on the image. Thanks for the feedback! =]

Do a full backup using the organizer's backup command on computer A. Then restore that to computer B.
EDIT It will probably go smoothest if you use some kind of removable drive for the backup location.

I want to get a new Imac Core 2 Duo but I can't figure out how to move my old files from my very old PowerPC G3 to a new Imac when I get it -- which I hope is very soon. The G3 has a CD drive but it is not a CD burner, has a Zip Drive, does not have firewire ports or USB ports -- how on earth can I move my stuff over to the new computer? 2sockeye, yes, you can use the new mac's Migration Assistant Program to help you move files etc to your new mac via a firewire connection.
Before you do that, search more on "migration" etc on this Discussion; Move only your data files (music, photos) as much as possible but do not move applications and especially system files, preferences that may or will override what's in your new Intel mac, it will cause corruption or an unstable system.
Download and install all the applications from ground up, especially 3rd party utilities etc - look for the Universal versions (either stated, or with a blue "ying yang" logo)

No, when you go through the beginning of setting up your new Mac, a page with the Migration Program would appear, and ask you questions on how and what kind of migration you want to perform, it will also ask you (with given instructions) connect the 2 macs up with a firewire cable - this cable goes into your firewire ports
If you don't have a firewire port on your old computer, then search again in this Discussion and under the Support tab, whether on how to transfer data on macs without FW ports

What kind of audio did the camera record? For example, the Sony NX5U can be set to record linear PCM audio, which will not import into CS4. If the same camera is set to record AC3 audio, then the clips should import and play as expected. This thread may help:

Now I used method as redirectURL(req,resp,Population.xls) to open that file but it failed to open it.
If I give the full path as 'D://USER_OBJETS/APPLICATION/Population.xls'
but it tried to open from client PC not from the server.
so the problem, I managed to create file in server but unable to open it.

How to deploy a war file on Weblogic Server 7.0??

I am trying to deploy a servlet on Weblogic Server 7.0 as a WAR file. Can anyone of u plz tell me the steps required to do that. I am posting this question on EJb forum and not on servlets coz this is not a servlet problem, rather this is something which is related to J2EE, ie how to deploy a war file on J2EE Server.
This is how i have done it, but this is not working---
(1) First i created a directory structure for the web application according to J2EE Specification.

i.e within work directory, there is a dic called myServletWAR which is my application directory which contains 2 sub directories viz META-INF which contains the mainifest file being generated by the jar utility. the second directory in the myServletWAR application dir is WEB-INF, which contains one file called web.xml for servlet mapping and one directory classes which contains HelloServlet.class
(2) I used following command for creating war file from myServletWAR director(i.e from my web application's directory).
jar -cvf TestServletWAR.war .
This creates the TestServletWAR.war file in myServletWAR dir.
Here is how my Servlet and web.xml looks like...

After deploying the TestServletWAR.war file on the weblogic 7.0, i tried to execute the servlet from the browser by the following URL
http://localhost:7001/myServletWAR/myHello
I am getting the HTTP 404 Error, which is an indication that weblogic was unable to find the resourse, which it was requested for. Can anybody plz tell me what i m doing worng?? do i need to use weblogic related xml file (i.e weblogic.xml) also along with web.xml. If yes, then what all i need to include that. I m not very sure. A sample weblogic.xml file for this HelloWorld example will help me a lot.
