How do I consolidate my music without duplicating files?

I am a brand new Mac user. I just copied my entire MUSIC folder from my PC to my new iMac. It is now in the Music folder next to the itunes folder. If I run a consolidate, should I first uncheck the 'copy files to itunes media folder when adding to library' to prevent duplicates?

When you drag one folder to somewhere else on teh same hard drive, it simply moves them (by updating the directories), not copies them

I'm looking for information on how to share an imovie library with other accounts on the same computer without duplicating files. If I copy imovie files to the shared folder each user is required to import the files to their library which duplicates the files. It would be nice if imovie had the option of including events/projects shared in the share folder. Is there an option to change everyone's default library to a shared folder? The easiest way to do this would be to atach an external drive. The external drive should be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). If you have a drive that is formatted some other way, you can reformat it using Disk Utility. It can be Thunderbolt, Firewire, or USB, but Firewire or Thunderbolt will give best performance for video.
Now you need to move the projects and events over to the external drive. This must be done from within iMovie.
In iMovie, click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK.
Now, in the Project Library View, hold down the command key while dragging the small icon for each project to the small icon for the external drive. Now select one of these projects and click FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA. This will enable you to move associated Events, Photos, and Music to the external drive. Repeat for all projects.
If any events are left over at the end of this, because they are not used in any of your projects, you can move them to the external drive by working in the Event Library list. Hold down the Command Key while dragging the small icon for the Event in the Event Library List to the small icon for the External Drive. Repeat until all the Events are moved.
Now you can edit these movies on any user account.
For future clips that you import from a camera, be sure to select the external drive as the location.

For reference I've had iPods since about 2005 and I've been through this many times. My harddrive in my computer recently crashed and I had to replace it. Now all of my songs are gone (other than the ones I got on iTunes obviously). About half of my music (near 500 songs) are off of old CD's that I have since thrown away since I figured I had them saved on my iPhone and my laptop. Reference again: I had this happen when I had an iPod touch also with another computer. With my iPod touch, I was free to manage my music manually without erasing all my songs that were on my iPod. Now why can't I seem to do this now with my iPhone. Please help! I can't loose 500 songs! That's $500 that I DON'T HAVE to spend on music that I've already bought! P.S. I just need to know how to manually manage my music without erasing all my music!

There has got to be a way to allow all users on a single computer access to a single -shared- directory without DUPLICATING the songs, but I can't figure it out. Tried Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Change, but the songs do not show up. Tried Sharing the folders. Tried Public Folders. Just want all my songs in one place to save space, prevent duplicates. Please advise.

Move the iTunes folder from its current location to, say, C:\iTunes.
With each account in turn press and hold down shift and click the icon to start iTunes, keep holding until asked to Choose or create a library.
Choose the library at C:\iTunes, or wherever you put it.

Go to Settings, and then turn iMessage and FaceTime on if they are off. If they are on, then turn them both off, restart the phone, then turn them back on.
Go back to Settings > iCloud. Whether the current or old email address is displayed there, try your current password.

The error might occur if the database is not shutdown cleanly. In this case, log file is required, or, you will have some data lost. Please pay attention to this thread addressing this type of issue:

I have two libraries on the same computer but different logins, there is my user account for the computer and then there is my grandma's, how do i get my music without having to resync on both libraries?

Also, a few weeks ago, I loaned the IPOD to somebody and they told me that evidently the IPOD had been hacked and that it had lost all the music. When I got it back, I re-synced it and got some of the music back. After talking to other people, I now suspect that my "friend" tried to do something he wasn't suppose to to and the IPOD shut down or that he was trying to create an Apple ID of his own without paying for it. Now that I have it back, I just want to get the music back that I paid for that is already associated with my ID and that is in my two libraries. I can see them in there (on the computer), I just can't access them to download them on the IPOD. Can you help?

Just to summarise what's in the link above:
Method one is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries.
Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library. If you've had no success with this you can have a look through the guide on this page: Loading songs onto iPod automatically

I have moved my entire music library onto an external hard drive. However, when I want to copy a new CD at work, I often copy the music onto my laptop then have to manually transfer it to the external hard drive at home.
I thought that "consolidate" library would do this automatically for me. The problem is when I disconnect the external, the next time I open iTunes it tells me "The folder containing the iTunes Library cannot be found and is required. Please choose or create a new iTunes Library." So I choose the iTunes library that resides on my laptop in the Music folder. When I go back to using my external music folder and try to consolidate my library nothing happens. I would like to use the "consolidate library" command to copy the music from my laptop to my external hard drive. Please help!

Drag it to the internal drive.
If it contains the iTunes database files, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, click on Choose Library, and navigate to it.
If it doesn't, drag it from there into the open iTunes application window.

Your question is not clear - what exactly do you mean by "group albums into one 'title'"?
The general answer to your question is to simply use albums and folders - folders hold albums and/or other folders and albums hold photos - there is no duplication of anything - albums are pointer to photos in your library and are simply one way to view your photos
So you can easily have a set of folders and albums like
Vacations
     Europe
        France
           City One album
           City Two album
        England
          City One album
          City Two album
      France
          City One album
          City Two album
    North America
       Mexico
          City One album
          City Two album
       Canada
          City One album
          City Two album

           Missouri
