How do I convert a hand drawn ink image to layers?

I have an hand drawn image in jpg of black lines on white background (similar to line art) and I want to convert the black lines to a layer.
How can I do this?

  • Ai-cs6 How Do I trace a hand drawn sketch to a single line vector outline?

So I am basically a brand new user to ai-cs6 and have been working on a project for a friend. I've drawn up the basic components of the logo she wants, all separate individual pieces. My intention is/was to trace in each piece, and scale, rotate, and clean them up according to how the final piece should look. Where I'm running into trouble is that the sketches are not point perfect, meaning there's some shading in the hand drawns, and the lines are rough in areas. I'm trying to avoid redrawing the pieces because we both are really happy with where they're at. What I'd like to do with ai-cs6 and I'm hoping this community of creative individuals can help is to trace very simply a one line vector of the outline of the image. So instead of creating a piece that has stroke straight from the scanned in artwork, I get a single line, with multiple points, that flows the simple shape of the piece. From there it seems it would be pretty simple to just increase the stroke weight and modify the style of line to make it look how we would like. All I've succesfully been able to do so far, with the help of some videos and google searching, is to get a traced image that's basically an outline of the sketch. This is o.k. except that since the sketch has some rough line sections ai-cs6 is adding either a lot of detail and making it look pretty rough, or it's missing entire sections and leaving them blank. Any insight and help into getting this figured would be great, I'm gonna roll with what image trace is giving me so I can give her an image of the logo today, but hoping that I can clean it up and get closer to a finished product by next week. Thank you very much I'm grateful that there are discussion forums like this out there to help users of all skill level continue flowing and working with these awesome adobe products.

What you're talking about is generically called autotracing in centerline mode. Most autotrace programs can either try to trace all the way around the areas of dark pixels (outline tracing), or try to trace along the middles of areas of dark pixels (centerline tracing).
In Illustrator's autotrace settings, for centerline mode, you turn off the tracing of outlines (fills) and turn on the tracing of centerlines (strokes). That's the basic setting. From there, you try to adjust the various threshold settings to get as close to what you want as you can.
When Illustrator's autotrace feature is set to try to trace centerlines, it also tries to set the vector path stroke weights to approximate the thicknesses of what it interprets as a stroke. So after the autotracing is done,  you can expand it and then globally set the stroke weight to a uniform value.
Beyond that, no one can really advise you more specifically without seeing the specific image involved. Every image is different.
Generally speaking, autotracing is crap. It's an amateurish workaround to avoid doing what should really be done: Trace the paths manually with the drawing tools.

  • How do I convert a bitmap/jpg type image to vector graphics/editable outline?

Corel Draw 5 did this very nicely but it's obsolete and I can't load it onto this machine (HP all-in-one Pavilion desktop with Windows 8).
I am working with hand-drawn images but since I need to manipulate the outline/s with a 4 - 12 pixel tool, it would be great to just be editing nodes instead.  Creating the image from scratch as a vector graphic would be a horrible large amount of work and is not feasible at this time.
Is there any way other than Corel Draw 5 to make the conversion from bitmap-type images to editable vector graphics, ie: editable nodes?
    Thanks.
PS - I don't have $700 - $1000 to spend on  software at this point but do have Photoshop Elements 11, Premiere 11 and Lightroom, plus GIMP and the usual.  Where should I start?

For occasional conversions, did you consider 'online bitmap to vector' conversions ? Do a Google search for that.
For more advanced and free solution, consider inkscape. It's a real vector drawing tool and can convert bitmaps.

  • How can I get two hand drawn images to line up?

How can I get these two images to line up? I am stumped.....I have used auto-align, scale, etc.....but I get one side right then other side not aligned.

You are dealing here with a difference in image size between the top and bottom sections and perhaps a difference in verticality.
Consider the bottom units. The left side should shift right and the right side should shift left in order to align.
Your next move would be the adjust the size of one of the layers by using Edit > Transform > Scale. Hold down the Option key to maintain proportion.

  • How would I digitize a hand drawn logo (which includes letters and other drawings) using photoshop cs6?

    @

Scan or take a clear photograph (with good lighting). Import in Photoshop. Clean it up, remove noise, etc. Straighten, etc.
Then decide whether Photoshop is the best tool for this job. It depends mostly on the logo design. In most cases Illustrator would be a far preferable choice for this type of work. Import the image in Illustrator, and start tracing the lines with the vector tools (pen tool). After finishing the line work, start adding the colours.
    Done.

  • How do I convert my smart object back into the layers I made it from?

I was working with 100 layers or so and i converted it to a smart object to work with easier.  However some of the layers and layer modes don't interact properly with the background that is separate from the smart object.  There doesn't seem to be an option to release layers within the smart object.  I attempted to solve the problem by dragging the layers from the smart object editable file but it didn't line up within the original file...extremely frustrating.  Any solutions? PS6 BETA Lion OSX

It was created inside the file.  They were differnt dimensions though because the layers selected to become a smart object had different bounds beyond the canvas.
The issue was that once I dragged layers from the editable file that was the smart object I would attempt to realign them BUT I have so many adjustments with masks that we'ren't linked so they wouldn't move with my realignment move(even a control+t)...I ended up going back in and relinking them all(which took really long) in order to realign things.
But really it would be so much easier if i could have just clicked re-add layers to file or something.
    No problem Howard, thanks anyway.

  • How do I lighten or remove dark/black images or layers in Photoshop CS5?

For several months, I have been trying to find the best ways to reduce the excessive amount of toner that is required to print many pdf documents in black and white, or even grayscale.  I use Leanprint but it can still leave pages of dark and black images.
Several Adobe Acrobat X posts say to use Photoshop to remove black graphics and/or reduce the darkness of images.  However, they give no further information about what to do in Photoshop.  I am not a simpleton but I know very little about Photoshop other than that there are probably several ways to accomplish this, depending on the circumstances.  I dread having to spend more hours trying to figure out what is the best option to use in each specific situation.
It is puzzling that it has been so difficult to find the information needed, especially since many other people would like this information as well.
I hope that someone can advise me or just point me to some directions and resources  as places to start.   Even knowing the best search terms to find this information could be useful.
    Thank you for any assistance.
    Cathy

Ok, something to keep in mind with CS5 photoshop any change of its brightness and or contrast usually is considered a permanent change.
However if your image is a camera raw file (straight from the camera in its native raw format) a tiff or a jpg, you can and should open the file in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) as any edits done in ACR are non-destructible in that any changes made can be changed or reset at any later time in the future as it does not alter the image it self, but applies the edits to the metadata.
That said, it means in order for a program to see those changes it needs the ability to read the metadata, which not all programs can do.
In ACR you will find a contrast slider, by decreasing the contrast the image will become lighter. You can also increase the highlights or whites and you can decrease the shadows or blacks. This effectively is similar to lowering the contrast, but because it is an additional step, you can do all three sliders effectively reducing the contrast even further than you would be moving the contrast slider by itself.
Since this is a metadata alteration, this change you made can be applied to a folder full of images that are the same formats I mentioned above, or you can select a group of images in bridge and apply to just the selected group.
At any time in the future you can remove the edits should you need to use the original image once again.

  • How to burn/convert VIDEO_TS from Mac The Ripper??

Ok, I just used MacTheRipper to rip a DVD with Video_Ts and Audio_TS folders.
Now my question is, how can I convert these into a disk-image, or how can I now burn this to a DVD? Thanks in advance

I don't want to use Toast since it's not a freeware
But it's worth every cent of it! I have been using it for a long time and can't even remember the last time I stuffed up a disk, burning DVDs Music & MP3 CDS, photo cd's data etc.
I have tried a couple of freeware and shareware programs that are supposed to be ok, but spent most of the time producing drink coasters. if there is one program I think everyone should fork out for it would be Roxio Toast.
maybe someone can recommend a freebie, but I will always swear by Toast and think it has easily paid for itself already.
    Cheers

What kind of burner do you have?
You need software to convert a Video_TS folder into the format necessary for a DVD to play on a DVD player.
One of the programs that will do this is Toast Platinum.
You need more than a blank DVD and a mere burner.
    Google for conversion programs.

  • How do I outline hand-drawn type made of multiple strokes?

I designed a logo for some family friends, and the main part of the logo is hand-drawn, and it is made of multiple (a TON) of strokes. The company is getting t-shirts made, and the t-shirt company contacted me to get a "vector file with the fonts outlined." I know quite well how to do this on actual fonts, but have no idea how to outline a series of strokes. Help! Thank you!

    Thanks Kurt,
I've already tried that, but since the writing is made of tons of strokes, it only outlines all of those individual strokes and not the whole word.
This is the portion of the logo that is hand-drawn, and what I can't figure out how to outline...
And this shows all of the strokes that go into it (this is when it's selected)... I'm guessing this is part of my problem.

  • How to add hand drawn animation over a video?

    Hi,
I am hoping to add hand drawn animation over video footage. For example: Hockey 101 on Vimeo. I understand the way to do it is adding it frame by frame? However this seems like a long process and was hoping something slightly quicker as I do not have long to do this project. I am no expert in after effects so please help me understand the best way of achieving this.
    Thanks in advance.

The link you used to have took me to a 21st birthday-themed slideshow...
Anyway, the simplest solution to copy the Hockey 101 video would be to draw something as a shape layer and use the wiggle paths thing to make it look hand-drawn. This way you only need to draw once per shot. If the camera is moving, you can use motion tracking to make the drawing follow the movement.

  • Filling a hand drawn print with color

Beginner!  I am trying to fill a print that has been hand-drawn (b&w) with color.   I have traced it and made Live Paint Groups but when I try to color it, it only allows me to color in grays.  I know there is an easy answer for this!  I have saved the Color Mode as RGB and CMYK but it still converts back to grey when I begin to paint. ??? I  am very new to Illustrator and cannot find how I need to save this in order to work with the colors.
    Thank you!

When you traced it I assume live Trace did you choose Grayscale as the preset in the Live Trace Options by any chance?

  • Hand Drawn Animation Troubleshooting (image)

I am following several tutorials for an end effect of a hand or writing tool that appears to draw a picture. I am attempting to have the hand draw out the picture by first taking the picture and using a stroke effect and tracing it with the pen tool. However, I am experiencing a few issues with it so far, namely:
    1.  I trace the image I want drawn with the stroke effect. I copy the mask produced from tracing and then paste into the positon keyframe of my hand comp. The problem here is it masks out section of my hand.
    2. Get the hand to follow the mask path created on the image. The alternative in the video tutorials for this type of effect often manually keframes the hand into position. I was hoping by pasting the mask path into the position keyframes for the hand it would automatically follow the drawing.
Please see image below for illustration (please click to enlarge), thanks for your time

You will need to convert the hand layer to 3D to make the lights and shadows work. In 2D the top layer is always visible. It is just better work flow to start in 2D, do the 2D motion, then convert to 3D.
It's kind of like cell animators doing quick pencil studies first to see if the shot works before going through the trouble of making all of the layers and doing the final artwork.
For projects that require a lot of client review and input I always do very simple motion and timing studies before wasting time finessing lighting, textures, color grading and the like. I haven't got time in the budget to do that kind of work twice. I can't tell you how many projects start with some rough pencil sketches (previously scanned now show with my phone) and laid in a composition to an audio track and animated. When the client (or even me) approves the timing and the flow of the story I go about the tasks of cleaning it up.
Here's a shot from a previous post that shows my normal starting workflow. It was in answer to this question on the forum.
On your screenshot: I just opened your image in a new window and it's much easier to read. Sorry about making assumptions. Making that wide composite was the problem. I try to keep my screen captures at about 1000 to 1500 pixels wide. If you need to show multiple views just upload multiple screen shots. My mac also creates PNG files. If I have time I convert them to medium quality JPGS because the file size is smaller.
The forum style sheet keeps the images to the width of your browser when they pop out and limites their size when embedded.
    Hope this helps.
