How do i give dvd-r's  best chance of working in majority of dvd players?

i got a bunch of dvd's made last year of our 10 minute short film and since then have been trying to make my own copies that are anywhere near as reliable as those copies we had 'professionally' made...
can anyone give me top tips on how to get the best possible burnt dvd's out of my g4 mac?
ive currently got a pioneer 104 drive but am thinking that an upgrade may do a lot to help the dvd's made wi9th this machine be more reliable.. but im not sure?
im already burning them at 1x speed and was using rebranded TY dye dvd-r's but since we've been told about a few compatibility issues ive tried Verbatim 16x dvd-r's which actually seem to be worse!
that has just confused me... and now i dont know what to do to improve the situation... new drive? the best disks? just pay the extra and get it done professionally? (but what can they be doing that differently?)

One issue is media compatability with such an "old" drive. Anything faster than 4X will probably be unreliable, if the drive can even burn it @ 1X.
You can get a new DVR-110D or ND-3550A for ~$40 online, it will cost you less than in media experimentation trying to get the right combination for your existing drive.
Search discussions for either model#; depending on your specific model G4 you may need to remove the drive tray faqceplate, run patchburn, etc., all covered in other threads..
You will still want to burn @ a low speed, but you won't have the media issues you are currently experiencing.

  • DVD Remote Control buttons don't work when using regular DVD player

    I created a DVD using DVD Studio Pro (version 3.0.2) and am unable to navigate through any menus or buttons using the DVD players remote control. I can press the play button on the actual DVD player and play the movie. How can I fix this issue? Any suggestions would be helpful!
    I never changed the default setting on the file I made and the DVD works just fine in the simulator as well as any computer DVD player. Also, is there a way to make sure the DVD will play on all DVD players even if it doesn't read burned DVDs?

    Not sure if I can add anything here - you're in good hands! I'd like to know how you constructed the menus - did you use photoshop layers for the background and overlay, or did you use a pict file? Are these motion menus or static?
    About the compatibility - a burned disc will only ever be about 85% compatible with the number of DVD players out there, and if a DVD player states that it cannot read from DVD-R or DVD+R discs then it most likely won't play your disc. The only way to approach full compatibility is to have the disc replicated, but the cost of this usually means it is not worth while for anything less than 500 to 1000 discs at a time. If you are using DVD±R then all you can do is take steps to make sure the disc is as compatible as it can be, such as keeping the MPEG encode less than 7.5MBPS, using AC3 audio, not applying paper labels and so on.
    Compatibility is getting better in general, this summer I have burned in excess of 90 individual projects on DVD-R (and duplicated each one up to seven times each) for playback on consumer players and only one came back (so far). When I looked at it there was a chunk missing from the surface of the disc, which probably explained the error!

    Please, I need some help.
    I am having problems with a DVD menu.
    Several days ago I burned a DVD from the same project that I tried to export to DVD today, and I did not have any problems with DVD menu, but today, when I start to burn DVD it shows me a warning sign that tells a few DVD markers are closer than they are required, and after burning DVD the DVD menu doesn't show or work on the finished DVD. What am I doing wrong?

    You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

    Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

    You can add this to the previous post.  All the information should flow time wise.  I'm pretty sure I'll not hear back from you, since everyone is too busy to take ownership of this problem.  This started WAY before Black Friday and continues WAY after Black Friday.  I responded to Derald......AT NO TIME HAS THIS ACCOUNT BEEN IN QUESTION.  An address change at the bank  was needed on the card.  Even IF this account had not been paid in December IT WOULD NOT AFFECT THE OCTOBER REPAIR!  How dare Best Buy use that tactic as yet another ploy!
    11/26/14 – As of today after I posted to Facebook Brian {removed per forum guidelines}, Market Service Manager, is aware of this issue. Brian {removed per forum guidelines} is obviously someone with enough clout to resolve this issue (I believe he is a regional or district manager).

    12/5/14 – Afternoon – STILL NO PHONE HAS ARRIVED AND NO ONE HAS CALLED! I called Nichole, Geeksquad Manager, Garner, NC Best Buy. Note that Nichole is the MANAGER! Nichole has received notification that they are TRYING TO SOLVE THE ISSUE! I’m very angry at this point! Up until this call, I have been very respectful AND extremely patient! I said to Nichole “what do I need to do at this point, call the media? WRAL 5 On Your Side? This is BEYOND belief! THE ABSOLUTE WORSE CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED!     12/8/14 4:04 PM – 888-BestBuy - Rebecca in sales department. Rebecca put me on hold for a bit trying to get a manager to help me. She was obviously concerned after pulling up this account and seeing just how bad the customer service has been. With Rebecca being in sales, I guess she gets it. Rebecca hands me off to Catherine. Catherine apologized for the way I’ve been treated and seems to be very concerned about this as well (some I’ve spoken with seem concerned, but NO ONE can ACT – the GM in Garner NEVER SEEMED CONCERNED). Catherine tells me that it would be a good idea to go to the UPS store and get them to track the phone sent on 11/5/14! Really…we have been told the phone was received! We have also been told the serial number did not match…….. Catherine tells me that it is NORMAL that the serial number doesn’t match if there has been prior repairs (which there has been). ANOTHER PROMISE TO CALL BACK IN 24 TO 48 HOURS. Another day……….. NO PHONE, NO RESOLUTION!
    47 DAYS, 30 documented phone conversations (some not even documented), MANY EMPTY promises of a CALL BACK, Delayed or NO email responses and COUNTLESS hours (mine and theirs) NO RESOLUTION from anyone!!! Paying for a SmartPhone plan for going on 2 months with NO SMARTPHONE! The amount of time they have wasted taking my calls would equate to just giving me a new phone! My time would equate to 3 new phones. The amount spent on a phone plan service that can’t be used is ridiculous. This Geeksquad plan is and has been in good standing for the entire duration of this issue. The madness just doesn’t stop!
    The amount of money WASTED on this one issue is unbelievable! Corporate Best Buy and Geeksquad are spending untold thousands of dollars with POOR MANAGEMENT such as this and passing on the expense to the consumer!!
    If you're planning on shopping/purchasing at #bestbuy or using #geeksquad this holiday season, consider this post on customer service. Imagine how you would feel if a family member or friend had to deal with this type of service, especially for a gift!!!

    Is it possible to see what iDVD did?

    I don't know any way you can interrogate iDVD to reveal settings to the extent that you can in a Compressor project. What you could do is open up the show's VOB in MPEG STreamclip, go to File and Reveal Stream Information; that will at least give you some rudimentary info like average bit rate. Perhaps someone, with more iDVD experience, can chime in here.
    The broader question is why use Compressor at all if your current workflow is doing the job to your satisfaction?
    The value of Compressor is that it gives you control over the many parameters that affect size quality.  and playability. The Compressor presets can give you a starting point for DVD delivery, Web, etc. From those presets, people typically experiment by adjusting the parameters until they get the desired results for their specific show. It's a little bit science and a little bit art. After experimenting, you may be able to get slightly better quality for the project you've successfully burned in iDVD by using Compressor and something likeToast…or maybe not.

    In any of the line item report (i.e. FBL1N, FBL3N, FBL5N) we want to view header reference as column data wonu2019t appear in any of the reference filed.
    For Example in Bank G/L Cheque number was enter in reference field but same is not apear
    In Sales G/L or tax G/L invoice number is to be appear which is again invoice number as reference in document.

    To add Reference field in line item report do below.
    From FBL1N output screen.
    Click change layout / (clr + F8)
    Now add Hidden field u2018Referenceu201D to column content and push copy button.
    Now you should be able to view reference field (BKPF- XBLNR) in line item report.

    In Flash CS4 when an AS3 List Component has too many rows,it will has a verticalScrollBar automatically. but it will never has a horizontalScrollBar even a part of the content of the list is hidden.
    I set the property  list.horizontalScrollPolicy="on",and set list.maxHorizontalScrollPosition=200; then the horizontalScrollBar appear
    but when I click the item of the list, all the list move to left, half of the list is hidden,

    hello, I now use premier pro cs5, from cs4 on my mac, love it, but I shoot with a cannon XL H1s HD video, my questiion is when viewing video from camera or on the screen in cs5, perfect hd picture, but when I export to DVD, i see in the media encoder if I choose mpeg2-DVD it goes output to 720x480, how do I export to dvd for the best HD seetings for DVD to get a HD playback on the DVD, now I see an OK video on the TV playback, but not the same as the original recording, can anyone help,, thanks in advance for any help.....

    Preset: PAL Progressive Widescreen High Quality
    Selected 'DVD' in the Basic Settings section of the
    Multiplexer tab (this creates a single mpeg file rather than a m2v file which has a separate video and audio file)
    Selected the highest possible quality (5) in the Basic Video Settings section of the Video tab, changed the TV Standard to PAL (to suit Australian TVs) and then
    Set the minimum/target/maximum bitrate settings to 8Mbps (when I set it at 9Mbps, the final file had too high a bitrate for DVD)
    In the Audio tab, I selected PCM as the audio type.
    I also ensured that the Use Maximum Render Quality checkbox was ticked at the bottom of the export settings window.
    Then I exported.
    Once encoding was complete I opened Encore, started a new project, selected DVD as the authoring mode and PAL as the Television Standard within the Basic settings for the new project. I then imported the final mpeg file as a timeline into Encore, set all the appropriate first play/title button/end play functions as necessary, then I opened the Edit Quality Presets window from the File menu and made the following settings;
    Format: MPEG2-DVD
    Presets: PAL DV High quality 8Mb CBR 1 Pass
    Basic Video Settings - Quality: set to maximum (5)
    Basic Video Settings - Field Order: None (Progressive)
    Basic Video Settings - Pixel Aspect Ratio: Widescreen 16:9
    Basic Video Settings - Bitrate Settings - Bitrate [Mbps]: set to maximum (9)
    Basic Audio Settings - Audio Format Settings: Audio Format: PCM
    click OK
    Then I authored the DVD and was quite pleased with the result. Still not quite to the quality I was hoping for (i.e. the quality of a DVD movie), but still a significant improvement on my initial attempts using default Pr & En settings.

  • Best video Hardware/software for converting VHS DVD and others on Mac?

    Hello,
    I am having problems finding some much needed details on what the best software/hardware is for converting video formats on a Mac. I should note I am using a NEW iMac 4GB memory and Leopard OS so what I use needs to be compatible. Perhaps next year I will get a Mac Pro, but for now I'm using this setup. Here's is what I need to do:
    1. Transfer old VHS tapes (home movies and such) to DVD. I need to be able to use DL DVD discs for my recordings so I don't have to switch DVDs. In other words make them just like the DVDs you play that you buy. Therefore, they also must be able to playback in home theater DVD players, not just on the computer. I would assume the best way as for encoding is to get the VHS tape in digital format on the hard drive, then use the codecs to turn them into DVDs?
    2. Once on the hard drive I also need to convert them to a format neutral playback on both the Mac and PC. What is the best, MPEG 4?
    3. The ability to do some nice editing of making bookmarks, chapters and thumbnails for the DVD menu and divisions I wish to make. In other words, if I have a home movie containing my Summer and Winter vacation, I want to insert bookmarks at points to skip to like in a movie DVD and also have a thumbnail of it just like DVD movies does.
    4. A nice MAIN menu for the DVD that will let me hit the main categories, not just chapters for the TOP level DVD menu. Such as Summer Vacation, Winter vacation.
    5. The software should be easy to use so I don't have to take a HUGE crash course requiring lots of work making the project a chore. Also, I don't want or need a professional package, just something simple that is less than $200 per software program. Not the expensive $500+ software options for movie makers.

    "Best software/hardware" depends on your exact needs & wants.
    One simple way to transfer your VHS tapes to DVD is with a *DVD Recorder*. Many of these come with VHS and DVD decks already built in. Insert your VHS tape, a blank DVD, hit record and off it goes. When finished, you have a playable DVD.
    To transfer your VHS tapes to DV for editing you will need a converter. The *Canopus ADVC-110* is a very nice, relatively inexpensive device that will do that job for you. (It's also possible to use most modern DV camcorders as converters, too.) You would connect your VHS deck to the Canopus box via their analog video & audio connections, then connect the Canopus box via FW to your Mac, and then when you play the VHS tape you would capture the video in iMovie or FCE.
    Once your videos are captured on your Mac, you could use iMovie or *Final Cut Express* to do whatever editing you might want to do. Regardless of which one you edit with, however, it's iDVD that you would use to create your DVD menus and burn your DVDs.
    So, overall, the workflow would be like this: *VHS Deck > Converter (camcorder or converter box) > Capture on Mac (iMovie or FCE) > Editing application (iMovie or FCE) > iDVD > DVD*
    For playback on computers MPEG4 would be an ok choice, H.264 is probably a better choice, and then there's the matter of whether or not you want to export as a QuickTime movie and/or AVI.
    iLife came with your Mac, so you already have iMovie and iDVD. How about giving them a try before you consider investing in a significantly more sophisticated application like Final Cut Express. (just my opinion)

    I am setting up a Mac Mini running SL for my 90 year old in-laws and it was my intention to give them a STANDARD user account so that they can not download and install anything nasty which they did all the time on the Windoze machine the Mini is replacing. But I was surprised when I could not access any folders on their account... specifically their desktop where I tried to drop a file.

    this is quite normal and is the default in all versions of OS X. a user has write access too their own home directory but not to any other users home directories. being an admin user does not change that. as an admin user you can give yourself write writes to it as discussed earlier but that won't happen by default. the best thing to do in the situation you describe is to log in as your in-laws once you vnc into their computer. then you can copy what you need to the desktop. it's of course possible to do it from the admin account by giving it write access to their desktop as you were intending but that will give you extra problems later because their users won't have write privileges to anything you copy that way.

    These are two fundamentally different issues. I'll try to address them each. For both you will need to have OpenDirectory set up (see the Users Next Steps list in the Server app). Once that is done. Additionally you will need the Server Admin Tools 10.7. Once you have them installed, you can specify the OpenDirectory password requirements for users
    User Passwords in OpenDirectory
    On the server, open Server Admin app.
    Connect to you server, then click on the OpenDirectory service.
    Click on the Settings icon.
    Click on the Policies tab.
    Click on the Passwords sub-tab, and you can set all the criteria for password requirements here.
    Resetting Passwords
    Users must log in as network users on the client computer.
    Once logged in, to change the password, open System Preferences.
    Click on Users & Groups.
    The user icon will be a silhouette with stars in the background. This means it is a network user. Click on the Password tab at the top.
    Click the Change Password ... button to change the password.
    Calendars in iCal are much like RSS feeds: users need to subscribe to them, like we discussed in our other posting. Network users will automatically be given a network iCal calendar, and will be automatically subscribed to it. However, if you want to automatically add subscribed calendars to network user's accounts, you will need to use ProfileManager.
    On the server, open Server app.
    Click on the Profile Manager menu item.
    Make sure that iCal service is running (green indicator next to it). Click on the "Include configuration for services: ...". Make sure the iCal icon is listed there.
    Click the "Sign configuration profiles" checkbox.
    Turn Profile Manager on.
    Once Profile Manager has loaded (the gear at the bottom right will no longer be spinning), go ahead and click the Open Profile Manager link.
    Log into Profile Manager as your directory admin user.
    Click on the Groups menu item to give all users of a specific group access to the wiki calendar. This is best if you have a wiki for a group and want to share that calendar. Use the Everyone group to add this calendar for all users.
    Click on Users to give access to only specific users.
    Edit the profile for the group(s) or user(s) you selected by highlighting that group and clicking the edit button.
    Scroll down and select the CalDav item on the left.
    Click configure. Here you will need to enter the specific details for that callendar based on the subscription details you get when subscribing to the calendar via the wiki.
    After all that you still need to configure each client computer to be set up for profile management, which really is a topic of its own. I recommend the following tutorials:

    Use Share/Computer/AVI to output each video as a DV-AVI.
    Then open a new project set up for DV and combine the three AVIs on that timeline. Voila!
