How do I move a project between machines?

Hi,
I'm an SQL Server  novice.
After developing some websites (VS 2005 VWD), my machine started to  crumble. (e.g, SQL Server won't uninstall and lots of other software problems)
So I bought a new machine and set up a clean installation of SQL Server 2005 Standard and Visual Studio 2005 standard.
I copied my old "projects" folder to the new machine but I cannot use it.
1: When I try to import  I get a "cannot import external files" error.
2: When I click on a project, it launches VS 2005 and I can edit etc.
However, when I try to run the website in VS 2005, I get the following error.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) an error
Please can someone let me know how I can get my "old" projects running in my new environment?
Thanks
Ken

Hi Ray,
Thanks for your comment.
One of the problems I'm experienceing is that most of the well intended advice is couched in metaphorical terms rather than in "Press this then click that" terms.
Let's use the sample SQL Express personal website starter kit as an example.
Which DB?:  In the App_Data folder thare are two .mdf files: ASPNETDB.MDF and Personal.mdf  I know that the application needs both of these DB's. If I change the connection string, do I have to do it for both of these DB's ?
Connection String?:  I have been floundering about in the help files without finding anything that I have found to be helpful.   Where do I find the "connection string" to these DB's? what does a connection string look like? , How do I change it? What effect does it have on the rest of the project? Do I have to do anything else to make the app run under SQL Server Standard?
If I can get answers to these questions it will help me to get moving forward.
Thanks for your help.

  • How to transfer imovie '09  projects between machines?

I was working on a project on my Air when on vacation and now can't move it back to my MacPro at home. I have tried the obvious and can get it to my desktop but the project is always greyed out when I try to import it.
Perhaps I'm missing something simple as I haven't used i movie much (using Final Cut Express on my MacPro.

Here is the HELP text: If this does not help you, see my next post for a workaround.
Copying or moving a project to an external hard disk
You can copy or move your video projects to a compatible external hard disk connected to your computer using a USB or FireWire cable.
Moving or copying projects is useful if you want to work on a project using another computer. You can connect a hard disk containing a project to another computer that has iMovie ‘09, and then work on the project on that computer.
Moving projects can also be useful if you want to save space on your computer’s hard disk.
To copy or move a project to another hard disk:
Connect a compatible external hard disk drive to your computer using a FireWire or USB 2.0 cable.
A hard disk icon appears in the Project Library.
NOTE:When using an external hard disk with iMovie, make sure it has been formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Select the project that you want to move or copy, and then do one of the following:
To copy the project, drag it to the icon of the hard disk where you want to copy it, and then choose “Copy project” or “Copy project and events.”
If you choose “Copy project,” none of the project’s video or other media is copied to the other disk. To edit the project, the computer you’re using must be connected to the hard disk that contains the media.
If you choose “Copy project and events,” the Events are copied to the other disk.
Either way, a copy of the Events remains in the original location, and any other projects using clips from those Events still refer to them at their original location.
To move the project, hold down the Command key as you drag the project to the icon of the hard disk where you want to copy it, and then choose “Move project” or “Move project and events.”
If you choose “Move project,” none of the project’s video or other media is copied to the other disk. To edit the project, the computer you’re using must be connected to the hard disk that contains the media.
If you choose “Move project and events,” the project and the Events used in the project are moved and deleted from their original location. Any other projects using clips from those Events refer to them at their new location.
If you’re moving a large amount of video at once, this process may take several minutes.
You can also move or copy Events to an external hard disk.
You can also quickly consolidate all the media used in a project onto the same disk as the project. This makes it easy to collect a complete project onto one disk that you can then edit from any computer using iMove ‘09.

  • How do I move booksmark to another machine without replacing the bookmarks on the new machine, i.e combine a number of bookmark files

I'm setting up a laptop and want to have all the bookmarks from my desk machine to be moved there from different accounts, but in end up in one file so that I don't have to have loads of separate accounts.

You need to combine all the links to one HTML file.
You only need a file with Anchor links like this:
    <pre><nowiki>
<a href="https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/754997">How do I move booksmark to another machine without replacing the bookmarks on the new machine, i.e combine a number of bookmark files | Firefox Support Forum | Firefox Support</a></nowiki></pre>
If you export bookmarks to an HTML file then you create a copy of your bookmarks and you edit that copy and you do not affect the original bookmarks.

How do I move data on time machine from one external hard drive to another?

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.

How do I move a project from one library to a different existing library in Aperture 3.2.3?

As the aperture library grows quite big and I want to split it into several smaller ones. How can I move projects from the old library to a new one without export them and re-import them all again? Is it possible to retain all adjustments after migration?
    Thanks!

You export the project by CTRL / Right- click the project and choose 'Export' > 'Project'. The same if you go via the file menu.
Every adjustment you made, books created, albums etc. will be kept in the exported project and are available again when you import it to another library.

  • How do I move premiere projects from macbook to external hard drive?

Computer is pretty full and I need to free up more space on my macbook.  By moving the large video files or projects to an external hard drive, I will free up the space on the computer.  How can I move these files?

From the appropriate application (eg, Pages, TextEdit, etc) find your file(s) in iCloud (use File - Open), then highlight (you can multiple-select) the files you want to move, and drag them to your desktop or another Finder location.

  • How do I move a project from an external drive back into Imovie

I recently bought an Iomega external hard drive to store documentary movies so that I wouldn't jam up my Imac's free space. However, after I moved an imovie/idvd project to it, and wanted to make changes, I could not move the project back into the Imac's drive. (It also would not burn from the external, giving me a multiplex error) When I tried to move the movie back into Imovie on the Imac it said Quicktime couldn't parse it. I saw various posts about parsing, but not about specifically about moving a project from an external drive. Can anyone offer any suggestions? It seems to me that I should be able to move a project back and forth without that much trouble.

Sounds like you have a DVD format (MPEG-2) and not an iMovie Project file.
The key phrases are "multiplex" and "parse". Both suggest MPEG-2 format when opened in QuickTime. It would also throw an error -2048 message if MPEG-2.
But another issue could be the file format of the external drive. Most ship pre-formatted for the Windows OS's but a Mac user should format using HFS+ (and others). If you didn't format the drive before moving the large iMovie Project onto it it may have become severely fragmented if the external used FAT 16 or FAT 32 (very common) formats. They have a 2 or 4 GB file size limit, respectively and would have made your Project unreadable when moved back and forth.
Use the Disk Utility app to find out the format of your external drive.

  • How do i move adobe licences between computers

I need to move adobe versions between computers, can I uninstall and re install on the computers I need using the same serial numbers?
Also Can I also have a record from adobe of what our organisation has purchased?

You will have to manually transfer the files from one computer to the other using whatever method is easiest for you. (network, DVD, CD, hard drive) Or, put files on network drive. That's what I do.

  • Can I or how can I move my "Project Library" and "Event Library" to an external hard drive and work from there?

I am running low on hard drive space and would like to move my imovie "Project Library" and "Event Library" to an external hard drive.   I cannot figure out how to find these libraries on my hard drive to move them.    How do I tell iMovie to look to the external hard drive to find them?

You need to do all moves from within iMovie so you do not break the links between your projects and your events.
First you need an external drvie that is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). FAT32 drives will not work, but can be reformatted using Disk Utility.
In iMovie, click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK.
In the Project Library you should see all properly formatted disks as well as your current projects. Hold down the Command Key as you drag the small icon for the project to the small icon for the external drive in the Project Library List. Repeat for all projects.
Now do the same for the Events. Command-Drag the small icon for the Event to the small icon for the external drive in the Event Library List.
Note: If you drag, rather than Command-Drag, you will Copy rather than Move.

  • I'm running Final Cut Express 2. How can I move entire project and application from one internal hard drive to another? Ran out of space on one drive. Thanks.

I'm running Final Cut Express 2. My video project is 95% done and I've run out of space on my 500g internal hard drive. How can I (1) move the complete FCE program and video to my unused 250g internal hard drive and operate it from there and (2) how do I then purge all the FCE info from the 500g drive without losing anything from the 250 drive?
Also, is it possible to change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 when the project is finished? If so, how? I now know this all should have been done before I started. Thanks for the help.

    1. You can't move the application. It must remain on the system drive. Move your capture scratch folder to the external FireWire drive and use the reconnect function in the project.
    2. What's the media 16:9 or 4:3?

  • How Do I Move Contacts from One Machine to Another?

I am a brand new user.  I bought an I-Phone.  I used my son's computer and sinked up with his machine.  I like the the phone and bought an apple computer. When I synced up, every thing was gone.  Back to the son's machine and it wall all back.  I want the apps I bought and the phone numbers and contacts what do I do?

You must authorize your Apple computer with your iTunes account with iTunes - the same iTunes account that was used to download the apps.
With your iPhone connected to iTunes and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone. This should include all iTunes content on your iPhone that was downloaded from the iTunes store including any music, video, and paid and free 3rd party apps.
Next enter one contact in the Address Book app on your Apple computer before the first sync - make the contact up if needed, which can be deleted later.
After confirming all apps on your iPhone are now in your iTunes library, select Sync Apps under the Apps tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes and make sure all apps below are selected. Under the info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, select Sync contacts with the Address Book. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select. After this initial merge, the contacts between the two will be kept synchronized with following syncs.

  • How do i move imovie projects from my internal hard drive to external hard

When I import imovie projects or import imovies, the "save to" drop down box won't drop down to show any options other than the int hard drive (although the ext drive is recognized by finder.
I read that the ext drive (a iTB western digital mybook) is supposed to be in a certain format for this, but I dont know if this is true, or how to even check if its formatted correctly

Your drive needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled) - not FAT32. You can check by right clicking on your drive icon in the Finder and selecting GET INFO.
You can reformat if necessary by using Disk Utility, but it will erase everything on the external drive.
Let me know if you need help with Disk Utility.
Now, check your version of iMovie. This discussion group is for version 7.1.4, so if you are on Version 8.0.4, different instructions will apply.
In iMovie, click VIEW/EVENTS BY VOLUME. You external drive should be visible in the iMovie Event Library. Now you can drag and drop your Events to the icon for the external drive in the Event Library list. This must be done in iMovie (not the Finder) or you will break your projects.
