How do i reverse a Terminal command?

I had previously enabled this Command in Terminal to gain access to my NAS drive storage in iMovie, which worked fine.... But now I would like to Disable/reverse the effects of the command below:
defaults write -app iMovie allowNV -bool true
I do not want my NAS drive to show in iMovie.
How can I do this please?
Thanks.

Use the same Terminal command but change true to false.
Example:
defaults write -app iMovie allowNV -bool false

  • How can I undo a terminal command?

I have altered the default location of screenshots taken on my iMac. Origionally the screenshots were sent to my desktop.
I created a folder and named it screenshots. I then opened a terminal screen which was found in the finder, under utilities. Then I copied the following into the command line "defaults write com.apple.screencapture location". Then before clicking return, I dragged the folder I named "screenshots" into the terminal window. Then I typed "killall SystemUIServer" to reset the terminal and the changes took effect.
I am curious now, how to undo these changes if I want to?

I don't believe you are using a PPC iMac, so you may want to change your profile configuration to include all the information about your hardware.
A good utility for doing these types of configurations without the need to know Terminal commands is MacPilot 4.3.1.

  • How do I run a terminal command from a dashboard icon

    Hello
I run the following terminal command repetitively and would like to simplify by running from an icon on the dashboard.
    sudo killall coreaudiod
    Thanks
    John

Look at creating a simple AppleScript app using the "do shell script with administrator privileges".  Google can help if you use that search string.
    <http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_authenticate_applescripts_administrato r_privileges>
Applications -> Utilities -> AppleScript Editor
do shell script "killall coreaudiod" with administrator privileges
Save as an AppleScript Application and put the application in your Dock.  That should be just as easy to launch as using a dashboard widget.

  • Reversing a Terminal command in Mavericks

Hi there. I have recently upgraded my 2008 MBP to Mavericks. I've been having an issue where the computer won't go to sleep when the lid is shut. After researching the issue and trying a number of 'non-invasive' options, I tried one that was to enter the following into Terminal and then repair my Permissions:
sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.coreservices.appleevents ExitTimeOut -int 1
sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.securityd ExitTimeOut -int 1
sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder ExitTimeOut -int 1
sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.diskarbitrationd ExitTimeOut -int 1
sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.coreservices.appleid.authentication ExitTimeOut -int 1
Unfortunately it did not solve the problem and now one of my programs, "Edgies" will not launch. I'd rather enter in a few quick commands to reverse what's been done instead of re-installing an old backup. Is anyone versed in code enough to help me do this is a couple minutes instead of a few hours!? Thanks for your time.

    Sure, here's an explanation:
    http://www.cnet.com/how-to/speed-up-the-shutdown-process-in-os-x/
But, honestly, I'd advise you not to type unknown commands into Terminal unless you know both what they're supposed to accomplish and how to reverse them easily. Evaluate carefully what you find online.
If you do like to tinker--and there's nothing wrong with tinkering--it's best to experiment with a bootable clone of the Mac's hard drive. If the experiment unleashes a box of bees, just erase the clone. At least the internal drive on your Mac remains unaffected by the experiment and functional.

  • How do I reverse these sudo commands?

Are there sudo commands I can enter in Terminal that will reverse these two that I entered?
sudo ipfw add reject src-ip 173.194.55.0/24 in
sudo ipfw add reject src-ip 206.111.0.0/16 in
    Thanks!

    sudo ipfw show
    Will list your rules
    sudo ipfw -q -f flush
    Will reset them to default.
If you need to keep some rules whilst deleting others you will need to work that out
If you reboot it should also reset any rules that are not in the config file - rules added manually are not in the config.
Apple have pulled the manual for ipfw, so I'm unable to show you what Apple's syntax is, look at …
    man ipfw
    to see what I mean.

  • How do I Undo This Terminal Command?

defaults write com.apple.Safari NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -int 0
thats the exact termial command i used. Any help would be great! Ive Tried using different commands to counteract this one but i have no idea what im doing.
    - Im running lion
    - i got the brand new macbook pro
    - any help would be awesome!

Obligatory warning: If you mess around with the shell without knowing what you're doing, you will cause yourself big trouble. You were lucky this time. Many shell commands can't be reversed so easily, if at all.

  • I used a terminal command to show the Library in the User folder, and now the Finder is behaving erractically.  Can anyone tell me how to reverse the show library terminal command?

I used a terminal command in Lion to show the LIbrary in the Users folder, and now the Finder is behaving erratically, hanging up and becoming almost paralyzed.  Can anyone tell me how to reverse the terminal command for show Library.  The command I used was:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/

Showing the Library folder will not cause the problem you've described. Nevertheless:
    chflags hidden ~/Library
will hide the folder. To reveal the folder:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Note, there is no "/" after Library.

  • Remove read receipt terminal command

Several months ago I was having issues with delivery of email.  One of my troubleshooting solutions was to implement a read receipt code in terminal to determine which emails were going through and which were not.  I have since "fixed the glitch" and want to remove or reverse the terminal command but I have no idea how to do it.
This is the terminal command I used:
    defaults write com.apple.mail UserHeaders '{"Return-Receipt-To" = "[email protected]"; "Disposition-Notification-To" = "[email protected]"; }'
Does anyone know how to remove a terminal command, disable it, or reverse the function?
    Appreciate any help.
    Thanks!!!

Quit Mail, then in Terminal type:
    defaults read com.apple.mail UserHeaders
to check that the value of UserHeaders is what you expect. If there are additional UserHeaders beyond the ones you want to delete you'll need to add them back later. Now type:
    defaults delete com.apple.mail UserHeaders
All of your UserHeaders will be gone. If you need to add back some headers use:
    defaults write com.apple.mail UserHeaders '{"foo" = "bar";}'
Obviously you need to replace foo and bar with your values.

  • How do I back up the music and apps etc. I restored my computer and I reinstalled iTunes, I was told something about a terminal command line, what does that mean? Please help

How do I back up the music and apps etc. I restored my computer and I reinstalled iTunes, I was told something about a terminal command line, what does that mean? Please help

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer any other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
    Copy music
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup. The restore will also update the iOS.
Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music
Are you sure you have a 3G iPod? A 1G iPod can only go to iOS 3.1.3

  • How to reset the network IP address from terminal/command line in Mac OSX?

Do anyone knows how to set the network IP address from terminal/command line in Mac OS X?

how about a GUI, ever heard of a GUI? it's this really neat thing, where you don't have to worry about remembering long strings of text to do something. Mac OS X actually has a rather decent one (that was sarcasm by the way, Mac is the best) you could have it done in like 30 sec, if you use the network pane of system preferences.

  • How to make Apple Script do a terminal command

    Hey,
I am wondering how can I make an AppleScript do the following command :
    "networksetup -setdnsservers Wi-Fi 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4"
Please mention step by step since I'm new to AppleScript
    Best Regards,
    Nadav.

To run a terminal command it is usually sufficient to use do shell script. So for your command it would be
do shell script "networksetup -setdnsservers Wi-Fi 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4"
note if the command requires administrator privileges you would need to do
do shell script "command"  with administrator privileges
will prompt for the password when the script is run.
do shell script "command" user name "me" password "mypassword" with administrator privileges
will store the password and username in the script. More convenient but much less secure.

  • How to make a script for a terminal command

    I need to find instructions on how to create a script to automatically run the following Terminal command;
Sudo chmod 755 /private/var/spool/cups. It will also need to include the admin password as you will be prompted to enter it after the command line is entered. Apparently the only way to get Quark 7 to print adobe pdf's is to open a terminal window and type the command every time the machine is rebooted. This is a temporary fix and I do not want the MAC users to have to type the command.
    Thanks
    Sal

This Script works here. Get you the error, when you save or checks the syntax?
When you use in AppleScript the entry with administrator privileges, is sudo optional. This says only, if everyone can use the sudo command inside of the 5 minutes limit without to write the password again or not.
The Syntax do shell script "sudo chmod 755 "private/var/spool/cups" password "***" doesn´t work, because you need the entry with administrator privileges for the execution as privileged user.

  • Help, i made a terminal command and i don't know how to undo it.

i found my long lost folder of terminal commands.. and i forgot what this one did, so i clicked it (i made the commands into a "unix executable file").. and all my files on my desktop are now hidden.. the only way to find them is to type in the file name into finder.
the command i typed in was
    while (true) do
    chflags hidden ~/Desktop/*
    done
and now everything on my desktop is gone, and i dont know how to undo it, I undid once about 3 months ago when i wrote it, but i forgot what i did. I tried counterering the command with others but it isn't doing anything. thank you
edit: i know this command cant destroy my system because it wasn't a sudo, but still, i had all my class work on my laptop and now it's all invisible

    Hi, try this...
    while (true) do
    chflags nohidden ~/Desktop/*
    done

I need help, How could I add Aliases to Local Administrator account via terminal commands???
I want to use commands to add alias for existing administrator account remotly by using ARD.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
a Windows Domain Controller does not have any local user or groups. So you might add the user to the admin group at Domain level.

  • How to save terminal command as application

Does anybody know how to save this terminal command as an application? This is the command that I use to backup my computer, but it is annoying having to copy and paste it into terminal every time I want to use it. Here is the command:
sudo rsync -auE --progress / /Volumes/Backup
If I Paste this into terminal, it asks me for my password, then starts backing up. When I enter it into automator or applescript editor, there is an error. Thanks in advance!

I tried saving a shell script command in an Applescript but when I run the script, it runs but then I get a spinning wheel, as if the script is in an endless loop. Can someone clarify what I need to do?
    My script:
do shell script "/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder & disown"
