If you have 10.6.8, and your Mac meets the requirements, you can use "App Store" from your Dock to purchase the appropriate version of 10.7.
If you are running:
Office or Word 2004,
AppleWorks,
Quicken 2007,
Eudora 6,
Adobe CS2 (Photoshop),
FileMaker 6,
or dozens of other PowerMacintosh Applications, these will not work after you update.
The ideal way to do the update is to install 10.7 on a brand new drive, and keep your 10.6.8 as a backup. That may not be realistic for many users.

You have to hook it up to a computer and update it to ios 5 and then there will be a "software update" button.

Do you mean you changed your existing apple id to a new email address, still associated to your existing apple id?
If that's the case, just click the sign out button in the icloud preferences, and sign in with the new email address.
If you're actually created an entirely new apple id with your new email address, you'll have to do some exporting/importing.

sorry for the ignorance. I wanted to update my system from the 10.5.8 to the most recent OS Mountain Lion and could not figure out how to do it. I had to find the MAC APPS STORE first since it is NOT in my dock. So I downloaded the Mac OS X 10.6.6 update combo, and the error message says "This update version requires 10.6! OK, i need a little help getting from 10.5.8 to 10.6. Any words of wisdom?
To complicate things, I bought this computer in the states but I am currently living in Guatemala. Not really a Apple Store around the corner. Not to mention it is a big 27" imac desktop.

Yes for itunes, or you can update when you on wifi.
On the left side bar where you see apps click on it then on the bottom you will see check for updates.

With iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC. You should then be able to sleect the Apps section of your library on that left-hand sidebar, click the 'Check For Updates' button at the bottom of it and download any available updates. You have to delete the old account, provide the password for the ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use. This deletes the account and your iCloud data from your device, but not from iCloud.
