How does Java Handle String Literals Setting to Null for Identical Values ?

Suppose,
String s1="Java";
String s2="Java";
Now if i am not wrong only one value(bit pattern) "Java" exists in the heap and both s1 and s2 are pointing to it.
If i set s1 to null,
s1=null;
Won't s2 be affected (it is not getting affected actually..)
What could be the cause for this ?
Thanks in Advance.

So is it something like ....
Variable         Memory Address   Value
s1                      0234234           "Java"
s2                      0234235           "Java"
is s1 is set to null :
Variable         Memory Address   Value
s1                      0234234           null
s2                      0234235           "Java"
No. In your model here, a variable's value is a String object. It's as if your entire house exists on my s1 paper, and an exact duplicate house with all the same contents exists on my s2 paper. In Java, no variable or expression ever holds an object. No value is ever an object.
It's more like this:
Variable         Memory Address         Value
s1                      0234234           11223344
s2                      0234235           11223344
is s1 is set to null :
Variable         Memory Address         Value
s1                      0234234           null
s2                      0234235           11223344and 11223344 is, roughly speaking, the "address" where the String object holding "Java" is stored.
And in both your model and mine, "Memory Address" is not the address that the variable holds. Rather, it is the address that corresponds to what we humans have named s1 and s2 for our convenience.

  • How does Java handle / recognizes fonts

    Hello
    can you help me with information regarding how java handels fonts? Especially how the fonts "Dialog" or "Monospace" come into life as i have no such font installed on my system.
    Thanks
    Matt

    Hello
    But there must be more behind it because we wrote a program to test if a font is compatible to the chinese GB18030 standard. This Font tests if a font can display some characters such as ༒ (\u0F12 TIBETAN MARK RGYA GRAM SHAD). Dialog, Monospace, SansSerif, Serif and DialogInput can all display it. But my system font is set to Thoma, which cannot do it.
    So, what is the mechanism behind the creation of these fonts? Thats what i would like to know :)
    Thanks in advance

  • How does "Unflatten From String" take a type and return a value of that type?

    http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371361E-01/glang/unflatten_from_string/
    How exactly does the "type" argument for "Unflatten From String" work? I need to create a VI that takes a type, passes it as an argument to several calls of the "Unflatten From String" function, and returns an array containing elements of the type originally passed. The "Unflatten From String" function seems to do some magic though, because the type of the "value" that it outputs changes depending on the type it is passed as input. How do I do the same magic in my VI?
    Ultimately, what I need to accomplish is an unflatten-list operation. Given a type T and a byte string of length L (which contains a concatenation of T elements that are flattened to their bytes), create a VI that unflattens all the types in the string and return an array of length (L / sizeof(T)) that contains each type.
    Note: performing the unflatten-list operation is trivial, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it in a VI that takes a type and returns an array of the appropriate type. By the way, my data is being given to me from another source, so please don't bother suggesting that I should be flattening an array using LabVIEW's "Flatten To String" function in the first place. My data is not given in LabVIEW's array format: http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371361B-01/lvconcepts/flattened_data/
    Thanks a ton!
    -Wakka

    Take a look at this example:  You can see that the flattened string contains several bytes.  The first four bytes contain the length of array (number of elements).  Since the data type is U32, the next 32 bits (4 bytes) contains the value of the first element, and so on.  Could you possibly use this scheme to do what you want to do?  Other data types present different outputs.  You would have to experiment with them.

  • How does java implements runtime polymorphism.?

    Hi all.
    we know how does runtime polymorphism take place in java.
    But my quesions is , how does java implement it internally.
    in C++, with the use of keyword virtual , complier decides to make a call at runtime using virtual table and Vptr.
    like in c++,
    class base {
    public:
    virtual void show(){
    cout<<"I am in base class"<<endl;
    class child : public base {
    public:
    void show(){
    cout<<" I am in child class"<<endl;
    int main(){
    base*p = new child();
    p->show();
    return 0;
    out put - I am in child class.
    but if we remove the virtual keyword then output
    I am in base class..
    We know how it happens
    but in java
    class base {
    void show(){
    System.out.println("I am in base class");
    class child extends base {
    void show(){
    System.out.println(" I am in child class");
    class demo {
    public static void main(string args[ ]){
    base b;
    child c = new child();
    b = c;
    b.show();
    output is - I am in child class
    but how can i bring the output as
    I am in base class ---
    complier knows that b is base reference so y doesnt it just use base version.

    if all methods are virtual..then we should always have runtime binding but we do have early biding too.
    shouldnt we able to call base verison using a base reference variable like in c++.
    May be I m mixing big times java n c++. But it seems to me as core java is much like c++ . The things u can do in c++ , u can do same in java in different ways.

  • How does java.exe behave if I only use -Xmsn option?

    Hi,
    if I only set the -Xmsn option and do not set -Xmxn option when I launch my Java application, how does java.exe behave? Does the heap will automatically grow like what Bea's JRockit does when my application requires more memory?
    I use JDK 5.0.
    Thanks for your help!

    If your application needs the space, the JVM will grow the heap up to the
    default value of -Xmx. Note that it will run a garbage collection cycle before
    expanding the heap, and it may take a few or several cycles to expand to
    the -Xmx value. How fast or slow it expands depends somewhat on the
    behavior of your application (how much it allocates and how long the
    objects live).
    The default value of -Xmx depends on the platform; see
    http://java.sun.com/docs/hotspot/gc5.0/ergo5.html.

  • How does FCP handle 23.98 DV Files?

    Hi All,
    Has anyone Edited using the DV-NTSC 24P (23.98fps) Easy Setup?
    1) How does FCP handle this video connected to a DV Converter Box like the Canopus ADVC-110?
    2) Does it actually play at 23.98fps on a monitor connected to the DV Converter Box?
    3) Does it get converted to 29.97fps somewhere in the process before it gets displayed?
    4) is it displayed at 29.97fps or is it really being displayed at 23.98fps?
    these are things that I am not sure of.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the feed back. I guess I should fill in the caps a little.
    *DESCRIPTION OF ISSUE:*
    One of our main Clients Disney, is migrating to a Tapeless Workflow based on ProRes HQ 422 @ 23.98fps. From here on out, they will only send us ProRes HQ 422 1920x1080 files @ 23.98fps and they want us to Edit every project we work on for them @ 23.98fps. At the moment, it doesn't sound like they care if we Edit our projects in ProRes HD or some SD format, but the important thing to them is that we edit @ 23.98fps.
    PROBLEM:
    Our facility doesn't have the infrastructure to support 25 machines accessing ProRes HQ 422 files. Our facility was built to support DV NTSC @ 29.97fps and we have been working this way fairly well, for a number of years.
    SOLUTION:
    I am trying to find a way to continue to us our current equipment and satisfy Disney's request to work on all their projects at 23.98fps, starting from 1920x1080 ProRes HQ 422 files @ 23.98fps. So, it was my hope to be able to take the 23.98fps ProRes files and export them to 23.98fps DV NTSC. This way we wouldn't have to reconfigure our entire Facility (which would cost a couple hundred Thousand dollars).
    My approach was to:
    1) Use Media Manager to render a new DV NTSC file at 23.98fps, which it does pretty well for the most part. It keeps the Timecode consistent between the two files (very important), but doesn't allow you to Letterbox the 16x9 video in the 4x3 frame, it just stretches it to fill the entire 4x3 frame (not so good).
    2) Then import the newly created DV NTSC 23.98fps file into a FCP Project based on the DV NTSC 24(p) 23.98fps EASY SETUP. Which works well. No problems there.
    3) Then Play the file in FCP out through a Firewire based Canopus ADVC-110 DV Converter connected to a SD Sony Monitor. This seemed to worked fine also.
    The fact that it plays is great!!!! But, that brings up the question, is it really playing a 23.98fps?
    My understanding of Standard Definition and specifically DV NTSC, is that it can only be displayed at 29.97fps, it doesn't support 23.98fps natively. So the fact that it played when I tested it got me thinking that I may be missing something here and DV NTSC and other SD equipment (like the Sony SD Monitor) can playback/support 23.98fps SD video. But that goes against everything I know up to this point!!!
    Have I been wrong all this time?
    1) Can SD Video and DV NTSC Video be displayed at 23.98fps?
    2) Or is it getting converted to 29.97fps somewhere in the process before it is getting displayed?
    3) If it is getting converted back to 29.97fps, then where is it getting converted, FCP or in the DV Converter Box?
    I am sorry I went a little long on this email, but it is a problem that will have great influence on they way we work for a couple of years to come!!
    Thanks for your input!!

    Latest version of Lightroom will not download RAW files from my D750. How does one get around this? Bought Lightroom for it's ability to manage RAW files and now very disappointed.

    Here is the contents of a batch file which will convert whatever raws you drop on it:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe DNG Converter" -cr7.1 -dng1.4 -p0 %*
    Once you download the latest converter (release candidate from adobe labs, if necessary), and save the appropriate contents of the batch file (change path to match your system, and parameters to match your druthers, if applicable), the procedure is:
    1. Drop raw files on bat file.
    2. Import as usual (the DNGs).
    Not too bad once you're set up (if DNG converter supports your raws).
    Documentation:
    http://wwwimages.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/products/photoshop/pdfs/dng_commandline.pd f
    Note: on Mac, you may need to use "$@" (with the double-quotes) instead of %* (which is dos batch syntax), and you will need to use the full path to the converter executable file, e.g.
    “/Applications/Adobe DNG Converter.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe DNG Converter”
    If too much, just use the GUI instead of the bat file.

    Hi,
    I got the solution for this. JCE 1.2.2 is supported on JDK 1.4.1 and JDK 1.4.2, but both of them have different unrestricted policy jars. I was able to solve the problem once I downloaded the unrestricted policy jars for JDK 1.4.2 (which is used by BEA 8.1 SP5) from the following URL : http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html
