How does migrating/restoring Mac OS X Server compare to Mac OS X?

I’m thinking of reinstalling the system software on our server (we have a bunch of problems we can’t get rid of) and I was wondering what the process is like.
We have a Time Machine backup and I was wondering how similar the process is to reinstalling/migrating a client installation of Mac OS X?
For instance does it give you the option to only restore files and data (such as Wiki content), or are you forced to restore all settings, users and preferences as well?
I’d prefer to just restore files and data and then manually recreate users and settings, in the hope of ridding ourselves of some of the problems we have (such as iCal server constantly asking for passwords and an inability to add or remove users using Server Preferences).

It's more a case of looking at the logs and not really knowing what I'm doing. Suffice to say I've taken the trouble-shooting road to my limit.
Mainly we have issues with iCal Server which keeps asking users for their passwords:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5936657
And now we have this error 14120, since 10.5.6, that causes us not to be able to add or remove users in Server Preferences:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8773646
I assume by the advice I'm getting from both of you that the migration tool for Mac OS X Server doesn't include the ability to bring only data files over minus all the settings and users?
I'm happy to do a clean wipe. I just want to be sure I can pull across calendars and Wiki data reasonably easily if I do it manually, as I'm not an IT pro. I'm only a CAD Manager and all my knowledge with these things is only through day-to-day experience.

Use the Remote Desktop icon on the tray and make sure to use the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) on the 'name of server' field.  If that does not work then use the IP address to connect.

  • How to create restore point in windows server 2008 service pack1

hi i am bhaskar ... how to create restore point in windows server 2008 service pack1 and how to restore system from a restore point in windows server 2008 service pack1.. is this option available or not ? what is the difference between shadow copies and
restore point ? instead of restore point we have this shadow copies option in windows server 2008 ?Bhaskar

AFIK, Restore Points doesn’t exist in Windows 2008.
Volume Shadow Copy option can be used to achieve:
Creating consistent backups of open files and applications
Creating shadow copies for shared folders
Creating transportable shadow copies using a hardware provider — for backup, testing and data mining scenarios
Quickly recovering and restoring files and data
It is more like a file, data, application backup.

  • How does one install a express sql server to run with Visual Web Developer 2008?

I successfully installed .NET framework v 3.5 and VWD 2008 on a new Vista laptop. When I want to add a Sql Server database to a website, errors tell me to install SS 2005 Express. MSDN SS 2005 Express download tells me I MUST  first install .NET framework v 2.0 before SS 2005. When I try to install framework v 2.0, I'm sent to v. 3.5 and no way to download SS 2005.

How did she change her AppleID?
If she simply updated the AppleID (not created a new one with a new email address), log out then log back into iTunes store.

  • Mac OS X Server, High Availability, Mac Mini

    Hi All,
Currently running Mac OS X Server on a mac mini, I'm looking for some ways to make that mac mini "server" a high availability system for my office.
The first thing i will change is to install the operating system on a external firewire 2 disks RAID 1 hard drive : http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10967
Then I'm thinking how to make sure the rest of the mac mini will be running all the time as well.
That's why I'm wondering if it's possible to make everything double : 2 minis with 1 RAID hard drive each.
Each complete set would be linked to create somewhat of fail-over system : If one set woes the other one can take over with exactly the same data.
A bit like what it's been done here :
http://homepage.mac.com/pauljlucas/personal/macmini/cluster.html but with OS X Server instead of Linux.

    Hi lulu62-
I am working on a similar project with Minis so I will be keeping an eye on your site.
In addition to Camelot's suggestions, do not forget to have a robust UPS with Automatic Voltage Regulation capable of supporting all of your gear for any expected down time.
The Mini is excellent because you can power it for a long time on a healthy-sized UPS.
    Luck-

Then there's something going on with Safari on your Mac.
Try troubleshooting Safari extensions and third party plugins.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

  • How to get sent mail from Gmail server onto my mac

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. When configuring Mail I used POP ( I prefer it) with my Gmail account and it tediously uploaded all my received mail from the Gmail server to my mac mail program. How do I get the sent mails on the Gmail server onto my computer?

Not sure if this will work as I use IMAP. Go to Mail>Preferences>Accounts> click on mailbox behaviour, uncheck 'store sent messages on server' if it is checked. Then try a fetch mail and see if it works.

  • How does Mail decide which outgoing SMTP server to use?

I have Mail setup with two accounts - one for home use and one for work.  Each has its own outgoing SMTP server.  My question: how does mail decide which outgoing server to use?  I don't want to mix work and home stuff.
Specifically, what happens in these three scenarios?
    1) I compose a new mail.  Does it always use the first account's outgoing SMTP server or does Mail look at the recipient's domain and base its decision on that?
    2) I reply to a work email.  Is Mail smart enough to look at my domain or the sender's to know to use the work outgoing SMTP server?
    3) I reply to home email.  Is Mail smart enough to look at my domain or the sender's to know to use the home outgoing SMTP server?
    Any information is much appreciated.
    Tom

    Hi Juergen,
Thanks for the suggestion - I had to "Customize" the viewable header to include the "From:" ("Von:") line to see who I was sending as.  As far as the "use this SMTP only" checkbox is concerned - they're checked on both my accounts - so I'm not sure how much of an impact that has.  To be honest, I thought this checkbox was meant to limit your outgoing mail (for that account) to this mail server only.  I thought that if it was not checked, Mail will try to send the mail via another SMTP server if the one for this account is not reachable.....after all, why else would Apple allow you to check both servers' "use this SMTP only" checkbox?
But this is good enough for me - now I can see who i'ms ending as.
    Thanks,
    tom

  • How to migrate Exchange HUB transport 2007 server with Exchange Hub transport 2010.

    Hi,
How to migrate hub transport 2007 server with Exchange 2010 hub transport server.
    Regards
    Anil

    Hi Anil
You do not do an in-place upgrade of Exchange - you build new Exchange 2010 Hub Transport Servers, you can utilize existing hardware by uninstalling and installing Exchange 2010 - but you must have Hub Transport Servers that match the Exchange version in
place for all Mailbox Servers that have the same Exchange version.
Essentially there must be Exchange 2007 Hub Transport servers in place whilst there are Exchange 2007 Mailbox servers.
Read "Upgrading from Exchange 2007 Transport -
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd346708%28v=exchg.141%29.aspx"
Exchange 2010 will synchronise certain configuration like Transport Rules and journaling when installing the first Exchange 2010 Hub Transport server, but from then on you must ensure synchronisation yourself.
Send Connectors and Recieve Connectors will need manual configuration.

How to migrate all logins from  default SQL server2008(enterprise edition) to 2012 SQl server(enterprise edition)default

    Hi BomaSri,
Have you tried v.vt’s suggestion? That article describes how to transfer the logins and the passwords between instances of Microsoft SQL Server 2005, of Microsoft SQL Server 2008, and of Microsoft SQL Server 2012 on different servers. The commands apply
to SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2008 and to SQL Server 2012.
