How to back up one mac to an external using another mac

I want to back up my old MacBook Pro onto an external hard drive. The old MacBook Pro is bad shape, hard to use in normal mode. The apple store genius told me I could use my new MacBook Air as a conduit for this back up. I purchased a FireWire cable with a Thunderbolt adapter for this purpose. I was attempting to use Migration Assistant to accomplish this back up, putting the old MacBook Pro in Target Disk mode, but from what I've read on these forums, mainly this article: Mac OS X v10.6: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac, it doesn't seem possible to back up onto an external given the options I am given in the process. So my question is (A) how do I back up one macbook in target disk mode onto an external using a second macbook as a conduit, and (B) is it possible to simply back up the old MacBook Pro while in Target Disk or Safe modes? Thanks so much for any help.

I've not tried using Migration Assistant before so i'm not sure on that. But if you put the old Mac in Target Disk mode and connect the working Mac to that it should show as an external drive, then connect your external HDD to the working Mac, open both drives and simply copy the data over or use your favourite backup software to do it.

Do you have a home network?
Personal File Sharing: You can connect Macs on a local network with Tiger’s Personal File Sharing, which allows you to mount folders from the sharing Mac on the master Mac—note that the slave Macs do the sharing; the master Mac doesn’t have to. To turn on Personal File Sharing on the slave Mac, do this:
    Open System Preferences.
In the System Preferences window, click Sharing.
In the Sharing pane, click Services.
In the Select a Service to Change Its Settings list, select the Personal File Sharing checkbox.
Now that the slave Mac has sharing turned on, you can mount it on the master Mac’s Desktop:
In the Finder, choose Go -> Network.
In the Network window, select the sharing Mac.
    Click Connect.
In the Connect to Server window, click Registered User, enter the user account name and password for the sharing Mac, and then click Connect.
In the window that appears, select the volume that contains the folder you want to sync with, and then click OK.

  • How to back up your mac with dvd-sharing?

i have a mac mini fall 2012 so i havent got any dvd drive, but my mac has it, i can dvd share, at least it says it can, but i cant see the empty disc that i want to make my backup on, i do not know how to back up my mac when i dont have a external dvd drive for my mac mini, and dont have a external harddisc.
pleas help me explain how to do it.
    mikkel

    Hello Mikel,
As far as I know CD/DVD Sharing is Read Only, you can't write to it remotely.
Also, DVDs for backup is not very good for most things, a cheap USB Hard Drive would be far better/faster.
You could, if need be, make Disk Images of what you want to backup on the Mini, then move the files to the other Mac for burning.

how do I deactivate one computer so I can use a third computer?

    Welcome to Adobe Forum,
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-deactivat ion-products.html#deactivate-problem
When you install it on the third computer or for the third time & when you to activate it, if it installed & activated already twice, there will be an option of deactivating it from the previous computers, please click on that.
Next it will allow you to activate on your new machine,
Now you can go back to your first computer, log out & log back in of Desktopp CC App, launch any product, if there is any product to buy, in that prompt there will be an option to " license the software", please click on that & sign in.
It will reactivate the CC on the first machine.
You have already deactivated it from one machine, hence you can activate it on third computer.

    Clone to an external drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • How to back up 'new files only' to external hard drive?

not sure i'm doing this the best way....  any suggestions would be great!
i have my master photo/video library on my desktop (using a file tree that i've grown & know exactly where things are since 2003- (pre mac).
that file is on mac + saved to an external hard drive.  i back this up to my external often, BUT I'm not sure if i'm doing it the best way.
i add photos, change the master file name w/ current 'added to' date, then drag or copy to the external hard drive and it copies/writes.  then i go and delete 'older file date' to keep space on external.  i've tried to copy using the w/o changing the file name, but then i have 2 copies of same file name on back up and i have to browse to see which one has the new photos?!  is there a way to add only the 'new' photos/files to the external instead of doing a complete copy, then i can go and update the file name w/ a current date?  concerned that my method of add new master file/ delete old master file will create eventual problems on the external?

To back up the whole Library totally, first make sure to Consolidate it, then simply drag-and-drop it on to the backup drive, that simple.
The KB article referenced by Karsten suggests one additional step: make sure your copy of the library is not at the root level of the drive to which you are copying it. I have not clue why this might be important.
    Herewith:
Back up your Project Library and events using the Finder
To create a single backup copy of your Project Library and events, you can copy the Final Cut Projects folder and Final Cut Events folder to an external storage device.
If you are backing up incrementally, create a folder structure that helps you easily navigate through your backup folders. You could label the folders with the date you made the backup copy, for example.
Important:    To avoid issues, it’s essential that you place the backup files in a folder (named “2012 Final Cut Pro Backups,” for example) that is not at the root level of your external storage device.
In the Finder, locate and select your Final Cut Projects folder and Final Cut Events folder.Your Movies folder is the default location for all project and event files:/Users/username/Movies/ Important:    If you moved a project or event after you created it, it will not be in the default location.
Drag the Final Cut Projects and Final Cut Events folders to the external storage device.
The folders are copied to your external storage device.

  • How to back-up Aperture3 libraries (on an external drive) to store in a safe place?

What is the best way to back-up aperture3 libraries to an 2nd external drive that provides a 2nd copy that I can use in case something bad happens to my original drive? Should I back-up the entire library package or just the vaults? What is the difference between the those two options.
    Thank you!

Depends on whether you use managed-Masters or referenced-Masters.
Most important is to back up original image files before import into Aperture or any other images management application. I like Vaults for backing up the Aperture Library, and I use referenced-Masters to keep the Library a civilized size.
Mass storage is cheap. We need backups both on site (all hard drives fail) and off site (fire, flood, theft).

  • How to get Outlook 2010+ to connect up externally using Outlook Anywhere (EXCH2013)?

I have a on-premise EXCH2010 / EXCH2013 deployment and I would like to allow our users to be able to access their email using their domain joined and non-domain joined (workgroup) laptop/outlook.
The clients are running Outlook 2010 and/or Outlook 2013.
The current issue is that I cannot connect, my test case is using Outlook 2013 trying to connect externally (using autodiscover). When I go and add a new profile and I select Exchange and enter my server URL (the autodiscover urL) and my user-id and click
"check name" I get nothing, just an error saying lookup failed.
I would expect for a WORKGROUP computer to get prompted for user/pass so they can get authenticated and the profile added.
Here is my OutlookAnywhere settings in my AD.

  • How do I delete one Mac from time machine?

I have a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro that back up to the same 2.0 GB Time Capsule via Time Machine.  Both are running 10.8.3 Mountain Lion.  Time Capsule has been giving me the following error:

I have purchased a separate hard drive for the Macbook Pro that is configured to do backups through Time Machine.  I want to delete the MacBook Pro from the Time Capsule backup so that only the Mac Pro is backed up on it.  How do I remove only the MacBook pro from the backup?  I do not want to remove any of the backups for the Mac Pro (only the PBP backups).

  • Backing up one Mac to multiple time capsule.

I'm using a Macbook Pro running OSX Lion. I use the Macbook to work from both home and office.
Because I live very far from office, I usually stay in the city with my gf which means I might not go home for 7-10 days at a time.
I do have a time capsule at home, everything works fine whenever I go there, backup is done seemlessly, catching up to whatever state the macbook is.
Because I can be without backing up for days and sometime weeks, I'm considering getting another Time Capsule that I would setup at work.
    My question is:
Is it possible to backup a single Mac to multiple independant Time Capsule (or NAS ). My understanding is that Time Machine probably create indexes of what changed vs. what didn't ... so I am not convince it would correctly update two Time Capsule which might be at very different levels.
If not possible I guess I'll have to look into another parallel backup scheme like Acronis or else (didn't really look into that yet)

From Pondini's Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions
    Pull quote:
... But Time Machine can’t back up automatically to two different places;  you must tell it each time you want to switch, via Time Machine Preferences > Select Disk.  That’s easy to do, but since you can’t automate it, not very handy to do often.   It doesn’t get you a second app, either.
    http://pondini.org/TM/27.html
Given that you would be switching from one to the other only infrequently, "select disk" might be the solution you need.
