How to compare the current date to an inputed date?

Question

I am having a validation to check if the date is not After the current System Date?
     public String getDate_trans()
         try {
         Date x=new Date();<<Get the current Date
         Date date=new Date();
         DateFormat formatter ;
         formatter = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd");
         date = (Date)formatter.parse(date_trans); <<<Inputed Date
               System.out.println(date);
               System.out.println(x);
               if(date<x)
                    System.out.print("Date is Valid");
                                               else
                                                 System.out.print("Date is invalid");
         catch (ParseException e)
    {System.out.println("Exception :"+e);    }
     return date_trans;
     }
