How To Connect To Oracle 11g Database From Microsoft Excel

Hi All,
I have Windows7 64bit installed in my laptop.
I have Microsoft Excel 2007 installed.
I tried connecting to Oracle database ( This is not a local database).
Navigation used:
Data> From Other Sources > From Data Connection Wizard > Other/Advanced > Next > Microsoft OLE DB Provider For Oracle > OK
Now I get a pop up to enter:
username
password
server
When I enter all the required details I get this error "ORA-06413 CONNECTION NOT OPEN"
Is there no need to give PORT number?
Thanks,
Vishwamber Shetty

Hi,
Did you install oracle client on the machine? Can you do "tnsping <SID>"? Can you connect to DB using sqlplus ?
Try using tnsname for server name.
Connecting to Microsoft Data Sources Through ODBC Connection  This shows how to connect using ODBC connection. I think this would be more appropriate.

  • Failover not working while connecting to Oracle 11g database

    Hi,
We have a J2EE application that connects to Oracle 11g database.
The connection URL we are using is as below
    jdbc:oracle:thin:@(DESCRIPTION =(SDU=32768)(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=abc.hostname.com)(PORT=1525))(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST= xyz.hostname.com)(PORT=1525))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=PQR)))
The issue that we are facing is, the database failover is not working. The application only connects to the first host in the TNS entry.Evertime there is a failure in the connection to the first host, manual steps are required to swap the hosts.
This started happening after we upgraded Oracle DB from 9i to 11g.
We are using the client jar of 9i to connect to 11g. Could this be causing the problem?
    Thanks In Advance.

Yes, you are right. Nothing else was updated.
The application still works as expected except the failover. If you are correct then I seriously doubt it has anything to do with java. It would be something to do with Oracle and/or network infrastructure.
If not then it is some small problem with the driver. You can try updating the driver but I wouldn't expect a fix.

  • Forms 6i is not connecting with Oracle 11g database?

Forms 6i is not connecting with Oracle 11g database?
    How to resolve this issue?

    Hi,
Once you installed the Forms and Reports, you need to configure the paramters like tnsnames.ora in you path.
There will be one folder in the Installation path of Forms and Reports search for tnsnames.ora file..and you need to Updated the file as per the which ORACLE Server you are connecting and then try.. it..
Default path for forms will be "ORACLE_HOME/net80/admin".. search for tnsnames.ora and modify it..

  • Installing JDBC driver to connect to Oracle 8i Database from Weblogic 10.3

I want to connect to Oracle 8i database from weblogic 10.3 application server. I found a classes12. zip file on Oracle.com to use as driver for the same.
I am also connecting Oracle 9i database from the app server. Now if i replace the classes12. jar from the lib folder won't it disallow me to connect to the Oracle 9i database.
2ndly the claases12.zip file i found from the site is for jdk 1.2 will it create any problems. Please let me know
Kindly let me know what is the standard procedure to install a new driver in Weblogic 10.3.

I tried to install weblogic 10.3 using jdk 1.5.07 but. it is not supported. Moreover from the sites also i found that it's only the application wars and ears compiled in jdk 1.5 need not be recompiled in 1.6. But no reference of jdk 1.5 is there.
I tried to use thin client from the code and connect to Oracle 7i
    i got the following exception.

  • Migrate Oracle 11g database from Windows To Linux using RMAN hot / cold  backup ?

    Hi Friends,
Is it possible to Migrate Oracle 11g database from Windows To Linux using RMAN hot / cold  backup ? ( as i would like to perform Point In Time recovery)
(or) The only way is to use RMAN convert as mentioned here  - Transporting Data Across Platforms
(or) Is there any other method (except exp/imp and data pump)
    Regards,
    DB

    HI
his post describes the procedure required to migrate a database from Windows to Linux using the RMAN Convert Database command.
Both Windows and Linux platforms have the same endian format, which makes possible to transfer the whole database, making the migration process very straightforward and simple.
To migrate between platforms that have a different endian format, Cross Platform Transportable Tablespaces (XTTS) needs to be used instead.
List of Steps Needed to Complete the Migration
The migration process is simple, but as it has several steps it is convenient to be familiar with them before running it.
    1. Check platform compatibility between source and target OS
    2. Start the database in read only mode
    3. Check database readiness for transport from Windows to Linux using DBMS_TDB.CHECK_DB
    4. Check if there are any external objects
    5. Execute the Rman Convert database command
    6. Copy converted datafiles, generated Transport Script and Parameter File to Linux
    7. Edit the init.ora for the new database
    8. Edit the Transport Script and Parameter File changing the windows paths to Linux Paths
    9. Execute the Transport Script
    10.Change the Database ID
    11.Check database integrity

  • ORA-12154 error when trying to connect to Oracle 11g DB from Excel 2010

    All,
I am trying to set up Excel 2010 64-bit to connect to an Oracle 11g database, but am having some trouble due to an "ORA-12154 could not resolve the connect identifier specified" error. I am able to TNSping the SID name, as well as connect to SQLplus. The TNS entry works, and the Oracle Home is in the right spot. I am even able to put the full connection string in the "Data Source" field when creating a data link in Excel and have it connect to the DB. But I would like to be able to create one that used the SID rather than the full connection string, as other users will have to use this. The developer behind the Excel solution created a number of .odc files to connect to various databases, so this gives extra weight behind figuring out how to connect via a SID rather than a full connection string. Any suggestions?

If you are able to connect with sqlplus, then this really becomes a question of how to define a data connection in Excel.
    But after quickly googling ..
    In excel ...
    "Data" tab
    "from other sources"
    "from data connection wizard"
    select ODBC DSN
On data link properties, select the "connection" tab
select "Use Data Source Name" and hit the drop-down
select a dsn that you had previously set up to point to the oracle database.
Anyway, that looks like how it is supposed to be done.  I'm getting a dll initialization error.  Probably due to the fact I have both 32-bit and 64-bit oracle clients, and windows never handles that very gracefully.  But then Windows never graceffully handles anything that isn't MicroSoft.   To paraphrase Forest Gump, "My momma always said Windows was like a box of chocolates.  You never know what you're going to get."
In any event, the error you report means it was actually tying to look it up in tnsnames, but what you supplied wasn't found there.  That can also be a big issue when dealing with MS products, because they don't use the same terminology, so lead people into entering something other than what Oracle expects.  Are you referencing an ODBC DSN?  If so, have you tested that apart from Excel?

  • Issue in Connecting to Oracle 11g Database

    Hi,
I have installed Oracle 11g database using loopback adapter. (used ip 10.10.10.10). In the drivers file did the following entry
    ipaddress computername.domainname.com computername
How can I connect to this database from other computer in the network ex:using sqldeveloper? (When I try it says "Network adapter couldnt establish the connection")
    Thanks,

from other computer in the network Oracle version on that computer ?
Did you configure a connection string on that computer ? If so, please post your tnsnames.ora. If not, what did you do exactly ?
Also, from the server post the result of "lsnrctl stat".

  • Error connecting to Oracle 11g Database

    Hi All
I am testing .NET connectivity to Oracle 11g and I am not successful for a while.
I've tried to connect to database using library included in Oracle 10.2.0.3 Client and as a result I've got "invalid username or password" error. Then I've tried to use ORAC 11.1.0.5.10beta. I successfully connected to the server, but when I try to exec any query my program hangs.
Both of them work correctly with Oracle 9i database.
Also I've tried Microsoft .NET provider and it connects and executes queries fine (though 3 times slower).
How do you think what is reason or how can I find the reason?

    Pl suggest me urgently.
    thanks & regards

First of all: using the word 'urgently' is inappropriate and rude in a forum of volunteers.
Edit your post and apologize publicly for using it.
Secondly your question is a rhetorical one, as it's answer is:
    OF COURSE NOT
    8.0.6
    was succeeded by
    8.1.5
    8.1.6
    8.1.7

  • Not able to connect to oracle 11g database source through OBI Server

    Hi,
I am having an issue regarding the database connectivity.
Iam unable to connect to the oracle 11g database through OBI server. However its connecting through SQL Plus with same username/password@hoststring. Its giving the error as :
[nQSError: 17001]Oracle Error code:1017,message:ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied at OCI call OCILogon
[nQSError: 17014]Could not connect to Oracle database.
Please help me out in resolving the issue.

If it's working in one place and not the other then it's obviously not an OBIEE problem.
Are you typing it in right??
Do you have multiple tnsnames.ora files pointing to different databases, maybe sqlplus is picking up one and toad & OBIEE the other and so the username/pw is wrong for that database?
There's a limited amount that can be said to help, as the error is 100% clear what the problem is :) it's just working out whether you're connecting to the database that you think you are connecting to, and then whether the username & PW you're entering is correct for that DB.
BTW OBIEE 10.1.3.4 is supported with 11g, and we're using it without problem here.

  • How to connect to Oracle 11g using thin driver with service name & SID

    Hi Experts,
Wish to know whether there is a common way to connect to Oracle 11g server using SID or service name.
Earlier I used jdbc:oracle:thin:@<<server>:<<port>>:<<SID>> for connecting to individual Oracle server instances.
Now I need to connect to Oracle RAC which provides service names. So I need to use jdbc:oracle:thin:@<<server>:<<port>>/<<service name>>.
This connection string is internally constructed by a program and user inputs <<server>>, <<port>> and <<SID>> or <<Service Name>>. Now this requires two different connection strings based on the input whether its SID or service name.
Is there a common connection string for these two? Based on some articles like this, I understood that we can generically use jdbc:oracle:thin:@<<server>:<<port>>/<<service>>, whether for SID and service.
When I tried this format with SID, I am getting the below error. What I tried is jdbc:oracle:thin:@myoracleserver:1521/ORCL, where ORCL is the SID
java.sql.SQLException: Listener refused the connection with the following error:
ORA-12514, TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
Request your help in solving this. What I want is a single connection string whether its SID or service. Any help is of great value.

Oracle has an entire book for JDBC: The JDBC Developer Guide.
There are chapters that provide ALL of the connection properties and the rules for creating connection urls.

  • Unable to Connect to Oracle 10gR1 database from JDeveloper 11g using OCI

We are migrating our application from OC4J to Weblogic server. As a part, I am trying to create a database connection in JDeveloper 11g (11.1.1.3.0 - Build JDEVADF_11.1.1.3.PS2_GENERIC_100408.2356.5660) to Oracle 10gR1 database. Previously I had Oracle 10g Client installed in the machine. Created a database connection using OCI driver and when I try to test connect, I got "Test Failed: no ocijdbc11 in java.library.path". I searched through Metalink and forums and one suggestion was to install Oracle 11g Client on the machine where Jdeveloper 11g is installed. I installed 11g R1 client and tried the same test connection using OCI driver. Now I am getting "Test failed: ORA-12705: Cannot access NLS data files or invalid environment specified" error.
The same database connection works good with Thin driver with both Oracle 10g client and 11gR1 client.
Previously I had Jdeveloper 10.1.3.2 and Oracle 10g Client and I was able to connect to database without any errors.
Could you provide me the steps for this or if I missed any steps?
    Steps to Replicate:
For the error: no ocijdbc11 in java.library.path
    1) Install JDeveloper 11g (With embedded Weblogic Server)
    2) Install Oracle 10g Client on the same machine
    3) Create a database connection in the "Application Resources --> Connection"
    4) Use OCI driver. Enter the host details about the Oracle 10g R1 database
    5) Test connect to the database.
ORA-12705: Cannot access NLS data files or invalid environment specified
    1) Install JDeveloper 11g (With embedded Weblogic Server)
    2) Install Oracle 11gR1 Client on the same machine
    3) Create a database connection in the "Application Resources --> Connection"
    4) Use OCI driver. Enter the host details about the Oracle 10g R1 database
    5) Test connect to the database.
Note: Tried the same scenarios with Oracle 11gR2 client as well. It was not working at all.
Any ideas and pointers would be great.

    1. will my problem get solved after i install oracle 11g client on my machine.Yes, your problem should get solved. The version of the Oracle 11g Client must match the version of the JDev's JDBC drivers. Alternatively you may install an Oracle 11g Client and replace JDev's Oracle JDBC drivers with these from the installed client. Please, read carefully my 1st posting above in this thread.
    2. can i patch JDeveloper 11g on my machine to work with 10g client, or can i do the same with 10g client. You might succeed if you replace JDev's built-in JDBC drivers (which are 11g versions) with 10g versions, but I do not recommend you to try that because JDeveloper 11g and ADF 11g may be using some 11g features that do not exist in 10g drivers, so you may have problems.
I also have PLSql developer installed on my machine and it works well.PL/SQL Developer does not use JDBC drivers, so it is not an relevant example in this case.
My generall recommendation is to use Oracle JDBC Thin drivers. Oracle claimed that OCI drivers had better performance, but this was really true about earlier releases. Current Oracle 11g JDBC Thin drivers offer excellent performance and they offer all the features of the OCI versions (which was not true about earlier releases). In my opinion, the most important disadvantage of Oracle JDBC OCI drivers is that most versions have native memory leaks so all the RAM would get consumed after long application execution. The fact that WebLogic Server does not offer Oracle JDBC OCI drivers by default anymore says that Oracle discourages the usage of the OCI driver in favour of Thin driver.

  • Cannot connect to Oracle 11gR2 database from SQL Server 2005

Both SQL Server (Windows) and Oracle (Linux) are in 64bit environments.
I have done the following on a Windows 2008 R2 with SQL Server 2005:
Install InstantClient from Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Client (11.2.0.1.0) for Microsoft Windows (x64) to C:\Oracle
Install oledb from 64-bit ODAC 11.2 Release 3 (11.2.0.2.1) for Windows x64 by executing install.bat oledb c:\oracle odac
Note: Not sure whether 11.2.0.2.1 version of ODAC will cause any problem since I cannot find 11.2.0.1.0 version.
I have checked the Allow inprocess of OraOLEDB.Oracle provider in SSMS.
    I have executed sp_addlinkedserver @server = 'ORACLE_TEST', @srvproduct = 'Oracle', @provider = 'OraOLEDB.Oracle', @datasrc = '##.##.##.##:1521/TEST'
The ##.##.##.## is the ip address of the Linux server which has the Oracle 11gR2 database TEST.
    I have executed sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname = 'ORACLE_TEST', @useself = 'FALSE', @rmtuser = 'xxxx', @rmtpassword = 'yyyy'
The xxxx is the oracle username and yyyy is the password for the oracle user xxxx.
I know the oracle database TEST is up since I have setup connection in Oracle SQL Developer having:
    ##.##.##.## as the hostname
    1521 as the Port
    xxxx as the username
    yyyy as the password
    TEST as the service name
When I click Test Connection for the linked server ORACLE_TEST in SSMS, it just hang.
When I issue a query like select count(*) from oracle_test..xxxx.table1, it just run forever. I'm not so sure how to query an oracle table. I have also tried select count(*) from oracle_test.xxxx.xxxx.table1.
When I retype the password in the Linked Server Properties, it just run forever.
Do I need to create a tnsnames.ora on the Windows machine?
Do I need to change the tnsnames.ora on Linux machine?
    I'm very new to Oracle.

This forum is dealing with connections from an Oracle database to SQL Server - so the Oracle database is the driving site and this is the way round from your linked server set up.
As you're suing the instant client you might post your issue in the instant client forum:

  • Unable to establish a connection to Oracle 9I database from Developer Forms

I've installed the Oracle 9I database in the Windoes NT server with SID = ORA9i. Using the SQL*plus coming with oracle 9I database, I can connect to the database. I've also installed the Developer with Forms 6I and Reports 6I in the same computer. I tried to establish a connection to the Oracle 9I from Developer through "Oracle Net8 Easy Config". After giving the settings, when I do a connection test, it is giving the error "TNS Could not resolve the Service Name".
the following is the entry in the 'tnsnames.ora' file
    TEST9I.WORLD =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST = ((PROTOCOL = TCP)(Host = ntserver)(Port = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ORA9i))
Can somebody tell me how to make a connection from Developer (Forms6I and Reports 6I) to Oracle 9I database.
    Thank you.

    hi matz,
i tried this one too, but it is not working. giving the same error. if i've making a connection thru the 'Oracle Net8 easy config', it is giving the following error at time of connection test.
    The test did not succeed.
ORA-03106: fatal two-task communication protocol error
There may be an error in the fields entered
or the server may not be ready for a connection.
You can check the server and retry, or continue.
this is the message i'm getting. but i couldn't find any error in the fields i entered.
if i'm editing the 'tnsnames.ora' file and make the connection, and when i open the Form builder and try to connect to the database, it is giving a memory error.
the instruction at "0x67614f04" referenced memory at "0x000000160". The memory could not br "written".
i don't know why it is happening. i can connect from the same forms to Oracle 8i database. is there any additional settings we need for Oracle 9i on windows platform?
    regards
    george
