How to delete archive logs on the standby database....in 9i
Hello,
We are planning to setup a data guard (Maximum performance configuration ) between two Oracle 9i databases on two different servers.
The archive logs on the primary servers are deleted via a RMAN job bases on a policy , just wondering how I should delete the archive logs that are shipped to the standby.
Is putting a cron job on the standby to delete archive logs that are say 2 days old the proper approach or is there a built in data guard option that would some how allow archive logs that are no longer needed or are two days old deleted automatically.

Still it is on 9i, So you need to schedule RMAN job or Shell script file to delete archives.
Before deleting archives
1) you need to check is all the archives are applied or not
2) then you can remove all the archives completed before 'sysdate-2';
RMAN> delete archvielog all completed before 'sysdate-2';
As per your requirement.

JSetting the Policy will not delete the Archive logs on the Standby. ( I found a thread where the Data Guard product manager says "The deletion policy on both sides will do what you want" ). However I still
like to clean them off with RMAN.
I would use RMAN to delete them so that it can use that Policy are you are protected in case of Gap, transport issue etc.
There are many ways to do this. You can simply run RMAN and have it clean out the Archive.

There is no automatic feature out-of-the-box but you have the following views:
1) Shows archive logs transfered:
select sequence#, first_time, next_time from v$archived_log order by sequence#;
2) Shows archive logs applied:
select sequence#, archived, applied from v$archived_log order by sequence#;
If you see your archivelogs applied you can safely remove archive log files from your disk. It is your decision if you keep or delete them completely. -

In this particular case, since you are referring to asm and grid control you could be talking about either 10gR1, 10gR2 or 11gR1; but I strongly suggest you to avoid us to be guessing. In either case, you sould go to the maintenance tab of the target database and program a scheduled 'delete noprompt obsolete;' procedure. This will purge the information stored at the Flash recovery area, which I assume you have declared inside the ASM.

How to delete archive log by RMAN and what is the difference between
delete all input & all delete input in RMAN backup.plus archivelog all delete inputYou get an error on the syntax.
"PLUS ARCHIVELOG" does not allow the "ALL" keyword.
(See "backupSpecOperand" in the RMAN Documentation of the BACKUP command syntax).
However, "DELETE INPUT" allows the optional "ALL" keyword as in "DELETE ALL INPUT" to delete from all archivelog destinations.
I guess that you have confused the "ALL" keyword in "BACKUP ARCHIVELOG" as being possible in "BACKUP .. PLUS ARCHIVELOG".
"ALL" is allowed in "BACKUP ARCHIVELOG" but not in "BACKUP .. PLUS ARCHIVELOG".

Our prod database was running in Archive log mode and now it is in NO Archive log mode. I deleted all archive logs from the disk but I can still see them in v$archived_log table. How do I delete them from this table.
Environment is Oracle8i(8.1.7) running on Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

Recreating the controlfile is the only way to force a cleanup of all entries in v$archived_log.

"DELETE EXPIRED ARCHIVE LOG ALL";
it give message
"specifies does not match any archive log in the recovery catalog"

DELETE EXPIRED deletes backups that are found (through a CROSSCHECK) to no longer exist - usually because the files were deleted outside of rman.

How to delete archive log entries from catalog?
Some old, not needed archive logs are deleted from disk using OS commands but RMAN catalog still lists them.

Archived log missed in standby database
Hi,
OS; Windows 2003 server
Oracle: 10.2.0.4
Data Guard: Max Performance
Dataguard missed some of the archivelog files and but latest log files are applying. standby database is not in sync with primary.
SELECT LOCAL.THREAD#, LOCAL.SEQUENCE# FROM (SELECT THREAD#, SEQUENCE# FROM V$ARCHIVED_LOG WHERE DEST_ID=1) LOCAL WHERE LOCAL.SEQUENCE# NOT IN (SELECT SEQUENCE# FROM V$ARCHIVED_LOG WHERE DEST_ID=2 AND THREAD# = LOCAL.THREAD#);
I queried above command and I found some files are missed in standby.
select status, type, database_mode, recovery_mode,protection_mode, srl, synchronization_status,synchronized from V$ARCHIVE_DEST_STATUS where dest_id=2;
STATUS TYPE DATABASE_MODE RECOVERY_MODE PROTECTION_MODE SRL SYNCHRONIZATION_STATUS SYN

How to delete Archive log files in ASM?

Env: Sun Solaris
10.2.0.2.0 RAC with 2 node cluster
using ASM
I noticed that there are directories for ARCHIVELOG for every day.
for example:
2007_01_13/
2007_01_29/
ASMCMD> pwd
+DG01/<<INSTANCENAME>>/ARCHIVELOG
a) How to purge these files/directories automatically?
b) We use RMAN for backup. Not sure if these directories are created by RMAN

Since I don't remember what exactly I did which caused stopping those folder from being created, this is what I would try.
You have mentioned that these folder are being created at
"+DG01/<<INSTANCENAME>>/ARCHIVELOG" in your first post. Is this the same location what you set at init/spfile.ora ?
"*.log_archive_dest_1='LOCATION=+<<DISKNAME?>/<<DBNAEM>>/'"
If yes please change one of the nodes
node1.log_arch_dest_1 to some where else which is not the current location. Then watch whether these directories being created at this location. If they are not created we have an answer what causing this folder creation.
This is just a suggestion.
Do you see the filename inside these foloder somewhat in this pattern
"o1_mf_1_9403_2pxpr9dw_.arc"
Let me know what you think? Again it is just a suggestion I really don't know the answer.

From the primary database, which data dictionary do I view to get information whether the standby database has received and processed the archive logs from the primary database. Both databases are 11202 on linux. Another question, which views on the primary database contain a flag sent by the standby database to the primary database to let the primary database knows that the standby database is up and functional? My purpose is to query the primary database for infomation that tell me the standby database is alive and functioning. I want to setup RMAN not to delete any archive log files that will be used by GoldenGate. Once GoldenGate is completed with the archive log file, the archive log file can be backup and deleted by RMAN. It's my understanding that I can issue the following command "REGISTER EXTRACT <ext_name>, LOGRETENTION" to enable to functionally. Is this the only thing I need to do to execute to enable this functionally?

Yes this is the rigth way using clasic capture.
Using the command : REGISTER EXTRACT Extract_name LOGRETENTION.
Create a Oracle Streams Group Capture (Artificial) that prevent RMAN archive deletion if these are pending to process for Golden Gate capture process.
You can see this integration doing a SELECT * FROM DBA_CAPTURE; after execute the register command.
Then, when RMAN try to delete a archive file pending to process for GG this warning appear AT RMAN logs:
Error: RMAN 8317 (RMAN-08317 RMAN-8317)
Text: WARNING: archived log not deleted, needed for standby or upstream capture process.
Then , this is a good manageability feature. I think is a 11.1 GG new feature.
Tip. To avoid RMAN backup multiples times a archive pending to process, there is a option called BACKUP archivelog not backed 1 times.
If you remove a Capture process that is registered with the database you need to use this comand to remove the streams capture group:
unREGISTER EXTRACT extract_name LOGRETENTION;
Then if you query dba_capture, the artificial Streams group is deleted.

for activation DSO data it is taking huge time. At the time of seqential read to RSREQDONE table.
I think this is due to huge logs in the staandard tables.

see if the change log and PSA deletion is happening regularly..else schedule same in PC
check with basis there are certain jobs which needs to run regularly at certain frequency..
