How to do a full format?
Hi all,
I've been maintaining windows computers for years, but never actually performed a full format on a macbook.
I have Mountain Lion on hand, both on USB and DVD - can someone point me in the right direction on how to do a fresh format and install on a macbook?

If you have Mountain Lion (or Lion for that matter) you can easily format your hard drive by doing the following:
Make sure you are connected to the Internet (so you can reinstall the OS after formatting.)
Boot to the recovery partition by restarting the computer and holding down the command and R keys on your keyboard until the background shows up.
Select Disk Utility from the available choices.
Go to the Erase tab. Select your hard drive's main partition (probably called Macintosh HD) and click the Erase button.
Quit Disk Utility.
Reinstall the system. It may take a while depending on your network speed.
That's it. Best of luck.

Full format on Arch and map badsectors and smart outputs
Hi.
I would like to ask for your help. Recently i've been worried about my two Seagate Barracuda 14 series drives because smart provided by a smartmontools shows "end to end error" that is critical to a hard drive condition. I've been searching over the www for more info but most of them tells that drives with "end to end error" should be immediately returned for an RMA. My drives works well, even with this smart information, wrong parameter. I read that under windows doing a full format will check drive for a bad sector and it there are spare, than they would be remaped.
I would like to ask for the same thing under linux - how to do a full format to check drive condition, to remove existing bad block/bad sectors when they show up? Doing mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdXY will do the same thinh? Maybe using gparted and do it using gparted gui?

I have found on www that "end to end error" means that chip on drive is either damaged, or broken and can't work properly when checking data that are being writed, they are not in match with data recived and stored in cache.

In fact, it's just a bad joke from seagate. Two drives, rather new, one with around 2500h and one with only 500h are damaged, and damaged critical according to smart when my older Barracuda 11 has around 25000h and works fine! I don't want to spend fortune to hdd, won't buy red series from WD, won't buy green because i read a lot about broken green series drives...and now Seagate...davidm wrote:

From reading around it seems Seagate's SMART compatibility is questionable and highly proprietary. More than likely smartmontools is misreporting things under the circumstances. Apparently Seagate has an iso you can download and test your drives with that for a more accurate diagnoses.

Yes, they suggested me the same thing on Seagate support but...well...i want to be sure...i just can't belive that seatools is far better than smart reads. -

Once something similar happened to me. The external drives I had set up for FCP to use for some reason were not mounted, and FCP put all its render files on the main drive and I couldn't find them anywhere.
Go to applications, and control-click (and hold down) on your FCP icon; you should get a pop up menu that says "show package contents". Select that, select the "contents" folder, then the "mac OS" folder. See if your quicktime file is in there, or if you've got render files in the "render" folder or audio render files in the "audio render" folder that don't belong there.
That's where FCP sticks stuff when your documents FCP project folders are not available or when external drives you've selected aren't available. -

Roxio Toast™ Pro incl BD-component.
• Burn short AVCHD - on standard DVDs (20-30 minutes at HD quality) - NEED Blu-Ray player to be viewed
or BD-burner and disks - for full Blu-Ray Disks (not got to this yet)
I think that saving as .mpeg4 H.264 and save on USB-memory to be put into PlayStation3 also keep high quality playback.

I'm trying to make a time sheet and include a grid, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to print a full grid on my spreadsheet. There are options for shaded grids but I want a defined grid, and I have spent the last 2 hours looking for the answer. Any ideas?

Are you planning to have this table do any of the calculation, or is is to be used as the electronic equivalent of a sheet of paper with a grid printed on it—a place to record the data.
For your seven column table:
Are you using one or more rows at the top of the table to label the data below? If so, you might want this row (or these rows) to be set as Header Rows.
Are you using the leftmost column to label the rows? If so, you may want this column to be a Header column.
The default table supplied on the "Blank" templates contains one header row and one header column. If you need more (or fewer) Header rows or columns, select the table, then go Table (menu) > Header Rows > (choose the number you need). Repeat to set the number of Header Columns.
To make a seven column table from the table supplied by default, click on any cell in column H (The eighth column), and drag right to add more cells to the selection, until you get to the last column of the table. With these cells selected, Go Table > Delete Columns.
To make the remaining seven columns fit across a single page:
Go View > Show Print View to show the table as it would appear when printed to paper.
Select the table by clicking its icon in the Sheets List to the left (easy method), OR by carefully clicking on the outside boundary of the table itself (fiddley method).
With the table selected, you will see square white handles at each corner and at the middle of each side (including the top and bottom).
With the mouse, grab the handle in the middle of the right side of the table and drag right (or left) until the table just fits onto the width of the defined page.
With the table still selected, set the thickness and colour of the cell boundaries using the Gaphics Inspector (as described by Jerry), or using the Stroke, Thickness and Color Well controls in the Format bar above the working portion of the Window.

You really need to be more specific and use terminology from the program. There is no panel called the "edit window." And I can't begin to guess what you mean by "the complete window needed for full video screen." As Steven suggested, a screenshot could really help.
If you're basically asking how to rearrange the layout of the panels, you can do that by mousing over the divider between any two panels and then clicking and dragging side-to-side or up-and-down.

Wayne found the Spinning Beachball of Death, and you will find it too.
Numbers is not good at handling large datasets. Might I suggest that you group your data into smaller sets (each month, perhaps?) and save each group in a separate Numbers document. Numbers will not link between documents, but you could have a summary Table within each document. Then comes the "clunky" bit of copying all those summary tables into a master document where you do the final processing of the data.

I am using SQL*Loader to populate the data from the text file into my table.
The file has one field where I am expecting date date data in multiple formats, like dd/mon/yyyy, yyyy/dd/mon, yyyy/mon/dd, ,mm/dd/yyyy, mon/dd/yyyy.
While using SQL*Loader, I can see Loading is failing for records where we have formats like yyyy/dd/mon, yyyy/mon/dd, mon/dd/yyyy.
Is there any way in SQL*Loader where we can mention all these date formats so that this date data should go smoothly into the underlying date column in the table.

Madhu K.The point being made was, are you sure that you can uniquely identify a date format from the value you receieve? Are you sure that the data stored is only of a particular limited set of formats?
e.g. if you had a value of '07/08/03' how do you know what format that is?
It could be...
7th August 2003 (thus assuming it's DD/MM/RR format)
or
8th July 2003 (thus assuming it's MM/DD/RR format)
or
3rd August 2007 (thus assuming it's RR/MM/DD format)
or
8th March 2007 (thus assuming it's RR/DD/MM format)
or even more obscurely...
3rd July 2008 (MM/RR/DD)
or
7th March 2008 (DD/RR/MM)
Do you have any information to tell you what formats are valid that would allow you to be specific and know what date format is meant?
This is a classic example of why dates should be stored on the database using DATE datatype and not VARCHAR2. It can lead to corruption of data, especially if the date can be entered in any format a user wishes. -
How to delete a custom format in Numbers 3
I am one of the poor unfortunates that has upgraded to Numbers 3 BIG mistake!!
However does anyone know how to delete a custom format in Numbers 3?
I'm not sure where the custom format came from in the erlier version of numbers. I guess I must have created it for something, I can't remember what.
It now appaers that when I send a Numbers 3 document via email to an Excel format it adds a weird custom format that turns currency into garbage. Once in Excel simply going to format cells and deleting this odd format cures the problem.
If I could find a way of deleting it in Numbers 3, hopefully the problem will go away.
This is far from the only problem I'm having with Numbers 3. It's begining to look like I'll have to abandon Numbers 3 having had to go to the expense of buying a new iPad because Numbers 3 documents (and presumably Pages Keynote etc) no longer work on the original iPad.I never promote the method the deletion unless you understand the underlying tables of planning, if you search on the forum you will see posts on the subject just like this one - Delete dimension from planning application

How to create a print format in SAP
Hi,
I dont know if this is the right forum to ask this, but I have not done this for a long time. Does anybody know how to maintain a print format such as "X_65_200" that you use when printing a report in SAP? I'm trying to create a format that will use a Legal size paper. Useful answer will be rewarded.

The Print formats are maintained in TSP1D Table.. it is usually done by the BASIS folks..
