How to enlarge a physical slice ?

Hello
I realized I underestimated the amount of disk space required by Solaris only after the installation was complete. I thought 10 Gb would be more than enough since there are only 5 CDs in the install set. But somehow the 5 CDs can expand to up to 15Gb on disk :) Maybe you should say that on the download page.
So now I would like to shrink my NTFS partition with say 15-20 Gb using ntfsresize, and enlarge the Solaris partition, with all the extra space going to slice 0.
Now I do not think I can find a tool in Solaris to enlarge (and also relocate) the Solaris partition, but I will have enough free space on the NTFS partition to copy all Solaris slices there, delete and recreate the Solaris partition, and copy the slices back. Do you think this is possible ? Can I do this:
cp /dev/rdsk/c1d1s0 /MainStorage/Solaris/root_slice
cp /dev/rdsk/c1d1s7 /MainStorage/Solaris/user_slicewhere /MainStorage is the mount point for my large NTFS partition ?
After repartitioning can I do the reverse ?
cp /MainStorage/Solaris/root_slice /dev/rdsk/c1d1s0
cp /MainStorage/Solaris/user_slice /dev/rdsk/c1d1s7
growfs /dev/rdsk/c1d1s0 ...Note that now root_slice file will be smaller than /dev/rdsk/c1d1s0.
Of course everything should happen from the miniroot archive loaded with the GRUB menu, since I do not want the slices mounted while I backup/restore them. Can I install ntfs progs in the miniroot to get ntfsresize and mount_ntfs ?
How can I tell how many slices do I have on my Solaris partition and what are they used for ? Can I have more than one Solaris partition on my hard drive ? After partitioning my drive with fdisk into 3 partitions (FAT32, NTFS, UFS), there are 4 Gb unallocated left at the end of the drive. Can I create a new partition there and use it for swap in Solaris ?
Thank you,
Timothy Madden,

Thank you, I thought I will not get a response any more.
You got me, I am kind of playing with the OS, but I am trying hard to switch from Windows to Solaris.
I tried to avoid reinstalling exactly because I do not want just to play with the OS.
I am no administrator yet, but I think in real life you want to preserve your installation. Adding a larger disk drive or making more room on your existing one should be no reason to start a new system all over again. I have Solaris 10 1/06 and I would like to upgrade to the latest Solaris 10 release (11/06 I guess), but I need more room.
I know moving the slice back and forth as a file is not that wise, but I don't know how to do a back-up yet, and for now I think this is what I should do. It is basically the same ideea. I am mainly concerned if I can copy a file into /dev/rdsk/c0d0s1 even when that file is smaller than the raw device.
So can I have my swap in a separate fdisk partition ? Can I have different Solaris slices in different fdisk partitions on the drive ?
I don't know about SDS but it looks like a lot to learn. You see I am a good programmer and I thought learning Solaris would be easy, but it is not and I do not have a lot of time.
Thank you,
Timothy Madden,

  • How to Add a Physical Interface After Installation in Solaris 10

How to Add a Physical Interface After Installation in Solaris 10
    Hi Java Specialist,
I am trying to setup a network interface with the following steps on a new fresh Solaris 10 installation using the instruction titled How to Add a Physical Interface After Installation in Solaris 10 3/05 ONLY from http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19253-01/816-4554/esxhb/index.html:
    1. # ifconfig lo0 plumb up
    2. # ifconfig lo0 10.56.8.101 netmask 255.255.240.0. This was the working Windows DHCP environment prior to installing Solaris
    10 on top of it.
    3. # Added saturn to /etc/hostname.lo0.
    4. # Added 10.56.8.101 to /etc/inet/hosts
    5. # Added 10.56.0.0     255.255.240.0 to /etc/inet/netmasks
    6.# reboot
However, the following errors kept recurring:
svcs –xv …. unable to qualify my own domain name,
    failed with exit status 69.
Any idea on what other steps have I missed? I was hoping to only do step 3 – 6 for the change to apply permanently.
    Many thanks,
    Jack

Hi Java Specialist,... in a Solaris forum?
    1. # ifconfig lo0 plumb upThe loopback connection (your lo0)is NOT a physical interface. There are no hardware components for it. Nor can I think of any reason why it should ever be anything other than the default 127.0.0.1
Use your favorite Internet search site (such as Google, Bing, Yahoo) to learn more about it.
    2. # ifconfig lo0 10.56.8.101 netmask 255.255.240.0. This was the working Windows DHCP environment ...I have no idea how a nonexistent software construct gets a DHCP address in a MS Operating System, unless you are confusing this with the "Microsoft Loopback Adapter" which is an utterly different concept. Again, go see what Google tells you.
    <br>
    <br>
    <br>
... completely unrelated to configuring an IP...
unable to qualify my own domain nameAgain, search the Internet or even search these forums with that string of words.
Go back through your two most recent posts and read the responses again.
They seem to both be on the same topic as this new one -- configuring an IP on something.
How to initialize new IP address on secondary interface permanently
How to change IP address permanently on Solaris 10
When you've done all that, then come back and tell us what you are actually trying to do.

  • How to enlarge text in reader mode in safari on iOS 7?

    Hi all,
Just wondering if anybody could tell me how to enlarge the text when in reader mode on Safari in iOS 7? Before in iOS 6 this was very easy; you just needed to press an icon that had bigger text display while in reader mode itself. But now it seems with iOS 7 you cannot do this. Please somebody tell me that there is a way to do this?
    Thanks in advance!

I am confusd by the question. Safari Reader is still there. Apple moved the button to the left side of the address/search bar and also changed it's appearance.
It's just a series of 4 lines stylized to represent text. Once selected, the colors invert. I do not see any way to increase the text size further though,  ...and peerhaps that is your question.
In iOS 6, while in reader mode you could enlarge or reduce the size of the text just by pressing some icons whilst in reader mode. You can no longer do this in iOS 7 as the feature has been removed. But thanks for your response.

To change the size of only the Picture you can use the Draw Area Size like you already have. However if you want to move the other controls around the picture, you may need to use their Position Properties.
    On to question 2:

  • How can I use the bridge photos that are thumbnail size and place in Photoshop to edit, etc?  The size is too small, - how to enlarge without blur?

When I use Bridge to transfer a photo into Photoshop, the size is thumbnail.  It is too tiny to edit into Photoshop.  How to enlarge without blur?

That is the actual size of your image file. 48 x 38 is very small.
That is not a Bridge or Photoshop problem.
It is a very small image and you cannot enlarge it more than x 1.5.
If you want a large photo you must ask for it from whoever gave it to you, or take a bigger photo if it is yours.

Use this extension to adjust the font size for the user interface:
*Theme Font & Size Changer: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/theme-font-size-changer/
Increase the String pref layout.css.devPixelsPerPx from 1.0 to 2.0 in 0.1 or 0.05 steps to adjust the size of all fonts and other elements in Firefox.<br />
In current Firefox versions this pref is a String value parsed to a float and allows to fine tune the dimensions of all elements (user interface and web pages) more precisely.
You can use an extension to set a default font size and page zoom on web pages if the above steps made the text too large.

A mode in which a database can be opened that allows queries, but disallows modifications.
A physical standby database can be opened read-only so that queries may be performed. If a license for the Oracle Active Data Guard option has been purchased, a physical satndby database can be open while redo apply is active. This capability is known as Real-time Query.

How to digitize a physical book (scanned pfd file) to a kindle format with Indesign? pages are 8x11.
I have all scanned pages, but the kindle format offered on the Indesign options is bigger. What should I do? Do I start a book from scratch with the scanned pictures or do I leave the pages with the white space on them with the kindle option of Indesign.

    Hi barbaraegarza,
For your situation, you could try using alternatives like PDF4Kindle, Calibre, or Papercrop.  But based on what I've read and my quick experiment, depending on the complexity of  your PDF, it may be more effort than it's worth to try to convert a PDF into a legible Kindle, ePub, or any other e-reader file.
I did a quick test on Calibre with a 16-page PDF that contained multiple columns and images.  The results were illegible!  It ran the lines from each column together, making the text difficult to comprehend.  Calibre explains why PDFs are difficult to convert -- Ebook Conversion — calibre User Manual.  I have not tried the other two applications that I suggested above, but I would assume that the results would be very similar.
I don't know what kind of results you got when you converted it in InDesign, but if your first test turned out fine and it was just the size of the file that you are concerned about, you could use Acrobat to reduce your PDF's file size and convert it to the Kindle format in InDesign again.
    Hope this helps.  Good luck!
