How to ensure read only transaction mode

I am using Oracle73 driver version 2.00.03.01 against Oracle
7.3.4.5.
2 Questions:
1) I am using Microsoft Access 97 to attach to Oracle tables
via the aforementioned ODBC driver. Is there a way to ensure
that queries using these attached tables run on the Oracle
server in read only mode (equivalent to "set transaction read
only")? The solution cannot be using pass-through queries or
VBA code.
2) Where can I find a reference for all valid ODBC.INI entries
for this driver?
Any help would be greatly appreciated ...

If you are able to upgrade the clients to use the Oracle 8
driver, there's a check-box to set a DSN as read-only.
Unfortunately, I have no idea whether this option was available
in the old driver you're using.

• Select in read only transaction mode / insert in write mode

hello,
i have a following question: i have 2 db, one is rdb and one oracle
im extracting data out of table out of rdb and inserting them into oracle via OWB;
however this is run in read-write mode and causes locks in rdb; the only way to prevent locks is to run a select statement that accesses rdb in 'read only' transaction mode;
my question is: is this possible to split up the select and insert statements of oracle into 2 different transaction modes, so that select statement is run in 'read-only' mode and insert in 'write' mode?
i appreicate tips on how this could be achieved
thx
rgds

Hello,
is this something like:
insert into oracle_table (select * from rdb_table@rdb_link);
Then it is easy, you just need to use an sql init file for your OCI Service. Create a file, e.g. sql_init.ini that contains this line:
declare transaction read only;
Then alter your service so that it sees the sql init file, e.g.:
SQLSRV> alter service <your OCI service> sql_init_file sql_init.ini
The service owner must have the privileges to read the file. You need to restart the OCI service.
Then a statement of the above kind results in a read only transaction on Rdb side, and the insert on Oracle side is done.
I hope your SQL/Services version is a recent one (actual version is 7.3.1), because of this (from the SQL/Services Release Notes 7.2.0.1):
5.4.25 Declare Transaction in SQL Init File Being Overridden
In releases of OCI Services for Oracle Rdb prior to 7.2.0.1, if a DECLARE
TRANSACTION statement was executed in the SQL initialization file of a service, it would
be overridden by a DECLARE TRANSACTION statement executed later by OCI Services
for Oracle Rdb. Toward the end of the connection setup, OCI Services for Oracle Rdb would
execute a DECLARE TRANSACTION statement to set the default transaction
characteristics to be close to Oracle default transaction characteristics. This would supersede
any DECLARE TRANSACTION statement in the SQL initialization file. Starting with
release 7.2.0.1, OCI Services for Oracle Rdb recognizes that a DECLARE TRANSACTION
statement has been executed and will not execute another one.
Regards
Wolfgang
P.S.: It is always better to place Rdb related questions in our communities at https://communities.oracle.com/portal/server.pt/community/rdb_product_family_on_openvms . Those are watched by Rdb Engineering and Support. It was by pure chance that I saw this forum thread.

• Oracle 11g: How to ensure the same transaction across several BPEL calls?

How to ensure transaction semantics across invocations of several BPEL services with a Database operations (Insert, update)? We are using transaction REQUIRED property in all of our BPELs. We are using webserive and JCA to access and modify the same row. Our code uses a combination of JCA, Spring bean, enity services, EJBs in these BPELs. The code can be more efficient, but, at this point, we have no option but to fix the transaction issue in this code. So, our question is how to ensure the same transaction context is used in all these BPELs to inser/update the same row? We have tried to set the GetUnitOfWork in the JCA Adapter but it did not provide any solution. Apaert from setting transaction in BPEL to REQUIRED and the JCA Adapter to use Unit of work, we are out of ideas. Any help is much apprecited. We are using Oracle SOA Suite 11g 11.1.1.5 version. --chary

Hi,
I can help you if you can describe the processes.
There can be some difficulties when you try to use the same transaction especially when you use many DB transactions & BPEL processes.
Using unit of work only ,might not be enough.
Thanks

• XML FORM  -  How to save read-only controls with a default value

Hello everybody,
I have a 3 xml forms, each one to create one type of news. I need to use 3 because each of this forms has their own controls. But the control which indicates the type of news (asociated with a KM Predefined Property) must be common in the 3 forms, in order to use it on searches.
The question is, how can I include in this forms a control:
      - Visible for the user
      - With a default value defined in the control properties (each form has a different value, corresponding with the type of news)
      - Read-only mode
      - The value showed in the control must be saved in the associated KM Predefined Property when the user clicks the Save button.
Anyone knows how to do this?
What control can I use?
I was thinking of trying with text boxes, but I don't find the way to make them unwritable (Read only mode).
It is posible using labels?
Thanks.
Kind regards

Hello Jose,
I know you responded with a question... I see it in the email, but I don't see it here!  Very odd... but in response:
The first thing I do when I open the Edit.xsl file is do a 'find' for the name of the text field that I want to be read-only (in my test case, it's 'location').  Repeat the find until you see something like:
<!--
field location
-->
Below there is where I put the new code.  Mine looks like this:
- <xsl:choose>
- <xsl:when test="location='' and ($editmode='create')">
- <xsl:choose>
- <xsl:when test="./xf:ValidationError/@tagname='location'">
- <input name="location" size="30" type="text" class="urEdfiTxtEnbl" id="field_1157467268006">
- <xsl:attribute name="tabindex">
- <xsl:choose>
      <xsl:when test="$accessibilitymode='true'">21</xsl:when>
      <xsl:otherwise>3792</xsl:otherwise>
      </xsl:choose>
      </xsl:attribute>
- <xsl:attribute name="value">
      <xsl:value-of select="''" />
      </xsl:attribute>
- <xsl:attribute name="readonly">true</xsl:attribute>
      </input>
      </xsl:when>
- <xsl:otherwise>
- <input name="location" size="30" type="text" tabindex="3792" class="urEdfTxtEnbl" id="field_1157467268006">
- <xsl:attribute name="value">
      <xsl:value-of select="''" />
      </xsl:attribute>
- <xsl:attribute name="readonly">true</xsl:attribute>
      </input>
      </xsl:otherwise>
      </xsl:choose>
I put the <xsl:attribute name="readonly"> in both places (when test, and when not test).  I'm not entirely sure if that's necessary, but that worked for me.
Hope this helps,

• READ-ONLY CHARACTER MODE REPORT OUTPUT

Hi,
I am using Developer Suite 10g Report Builder to create a character mode report. I use commands as below to open the report output;
PROCEDURE Run_Report (vReportname varchar2) IS
LINEBUF VARCHAR2(2000);
BEGIN
linebuf := NULL;
linebuf :='C:\DevSuiteHome_1\bin\rwrun ';
linebuf :=linebuf||vReportname;
linebuf :=linebuf||'destype=file desname=c:\windows\temp\L610.prn ';
linebuf :=linebuf||'&& "C:\Program Files\TextPad 5\TextPad.exe" C:\windows\temp\L610.prn';
host('cmd /c '||linebuf);
END;
The reason why I am using third party software is because customer wanted to view the report output first before proceed with printing and I had tried with all option PDF, HTML, Notepad, Wordpad, Ms Word Viewer 2003, they all got problem wether fail to preview the output nicely or printer cannot recognize the generic output. As for now Textpad is the best in both to preview nicely and printer with generic driver can print the output nicely.
But there is another problem. Anybody can edit the output preview onTextpad and customer do not want that to happend (security for accounting data).
So, can anyone suggest me how to create the ouput in READ-ONLY mode? But please do not advise me to print directly to the printer because on 9i PREVIEWER function works well while on 10g this function has been obselate so I need to find the replacement of PREVIEWER function to running on web.
Thanks.
Regards,
Faisal

What about trying to view the text in the browser (IE/Mozilla)? That is what we do about reports produced by reports server: they are written in files on the reports server machine and opened with the browser, or they are sent directly to the printer.
Otherwise, i simply see no way to prevent a text editor from editing the file on screen. If, let's say you make the file read-omly, that won't do, for the user may change the data on screen and print what's on screen without saving the file...

• Read Only/ Plan Mode Changes for a layout with two different queries

Hi,
I have a situvation where a layout opens in a read only mode and when
the users click on button plan, it changes to plan mode. The catch here however is the queries
for read mode and plan mode are slightly different, in the read only mode the query has subtotals
and other calculations that are not a part of the plan mode ( where they input forecasts).
I know if the read and plan query are the same, we can achieve this through the command
SET_DATA_ENTRY_MODE. In case they are different, as above, how can i achieve this.
Thanks
Rashmi.

Say you are using two different queries as DP1 & DP2 for Display and Plan mode respectively. You also have one Analysis grid item in Web template which initially points to DP1.
On PLAN button call command SET_ITEM_PARAMETER to set the data provider of analysis item to DP2.
OR
You have only one dataprovider in your web template as DP1 initially pointing to Query 1 which you want to show in Display mode. Then on PLAN button call a command SET_DATA_PROVIDER_PARAMETERS to point the DP1 to 2nd query instead of 1st query.  You can find this command under Commands for data Provider --> Basic data provider commands.

• How to assign read only access for a database to a single user?

Hi All,
I have created a login for one of the user , and i used deny view to deny that user access to any of the databases to be shown.Now, he cannot see any databases in the explorer window.
My question is now i want to give this user permission ( read-only) to a single database. How can i do that? I have googled around and found some solutions but nothing is working.
Can someone please help me with any suggestions.
Thanks a lot for your time and suggestions in advance.

Hi Bhanu,
Thanks for your reply, I am not sure i got it. I have a user created with the name of 'msam_test' and if i login into management studio with this userid and password i dont see any databases showing up because i used the DENY View command to hide which is
working fine.Now i just want to see only 1 database named 'suresh3_test' with a read only access to this database.
I tried using your code in the below way
USE [suresh3_test]
CREATE USER [<msam_test>] FOR LOGIN [<msam_test>] WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA=[dbo]
     exec SP_ADDROLEMEMBER 'DB_DATAREADER','<msam_test>'

• How to remove "Read Only" attribute on folders

Hi
I am logged in with my User account which has full control over my folders.<o:p></o:p>
I have a folder that I tried to add modifications to, however i could not do so because the folder was classified as read only. I have full permissions to this folder. Previously the app that
uses this folder could write to it quite happily, but today it fails. <o:p></o:p>
The 'attributes' for the folder shows a solid square in the read-only box. If I 'un-box' the read-only and apply > ok, when I look at the attributes again the box is still checked.<o:p></o:p>
So my question is, if it's not (which it shouldn't be) some sort of protected Windows folder, and I have full permissions on the folder (supposedly), why does Windows not respect my wishes,
get out of the way, and let me set it to what I want it to be?<o:p></o:p>
I have tried the following methods to fix this issue, but none of them work:<o:p></o:p>
-Adjusting permissions and control, and changing security options<o:p></o:p>
-Using a third party application such as "clear read only" to remove the check on the box<o:p></o:p>
-Using the "attrib" function on the CMD prompt<o:p></o:p>
-Boot Scan for virus/malware that is affecting folder attributes<o:p></o:p>
-Running applications and CMD as administrator<o:p></o:p>
I have heard that if using a NTFS harddrive, then all folders will be automatically “Read Only” and that it is impossible to change that attribute. I find this hard to believe, as all folders
should have some way of being modified, regardless of what HDD I’m using. I obviously cannot change to FAT32, so how else can I get my folders to get rid of this ridiculous error!
<o:p>I have also noticed that this problem is very common amongst Windows users. If this problem has been around for a while, how is it possible that no solution has presented itself.
Regardless, we need a solution to it, because i can't do the things i need to while the Read Only attribute remains a constant on my folders. I thought it may be a virus, but my avast anti-virus did not pick up any infected areas when the scan was done. I
have searched the internet, and no "fix" has solved this issue. The only fix i have not found is a reg edit that could completely remove this read only attribute from all folders. Though i feel this is not neccesary, as i only need the attribute
to be removed from certain folders. Please kindly assist me with this issue, hopefully it will help many others too...</o:p>
Many thanks.

For example,
when we read context using Code Wizard,we cant type any value there.value only comes from value help.

Yes it is possible.
1.Create a context Attribute and then bind this attribute to the Text view UI element.
2. read context attribute and then set value to the context attribute like this way.
DATA:
        elem_context1                        TYPE REF TO if_wd_context_element,
        stru_context1                        TYPE if_first=>element_context ,

Hi,
I am using oracle 10gR2 in solaris 10.
I am taking Rman full backup using catalog.
My target database have 5 datafiles, in that one datafile is in read only mode.
When I issue the backup command in rman. it takes only 4 datafiles. its not taking the readonly datafile.
I want to take backup of all 5 datafiles.
kindly help me..
Many Thanks

My target database have 5 datafiles, in that one datafile is in read only mode.I presume that you mean to say that 1 Tablespace consisting of 1 datafile is Read Only.
What does SHOW ALL in RMAN present ?
If you have BACKUP OPTIMIZATION set to ON, the Read Only Tablespace will not be backed up after the first backup.
You could still explicitly backup the tablespace with a BACKUP TABLESPACE tablespacename; , although a BACKUP DATABASE would exclude it.
