How to ensure "show context help" window is displayed on startup

Hello All,
I'm in process of preparing an application installer to be built, and am wondering if there's a way to ensure the context help window is presented to the user by default when they start up the application? I couldnt find any properties, methods or setup configurations that allow this to happen.
Thank You
-Ted

The context help window is an item of the Development Environment.
What you could do is an mouse enter, and mouse leave event registring for all controls (VI->controls[]) and use the tip-strip/description to output to a window.

• Context help window not showing up while running a VI

Hello,
When I press control+h in LabView while in edit mode, the context help window shows up fine.
But when I run the VI or run the .exe file, I press control+h and nothing happens.
Is there anything I'm missing? Like a configuration.
Thanks and best regards.

Hi
I use version 6.0.2.
I attached the .VI in case you like to test it. I'd really appreciate.
Thanks very much.

• What determines whether the Label name and/or Caption appears in the context help window but in other cases, both the label and caption appear in the context help window?

I am trying to polish an application, and find that I cannot seem to reliably control which of the label or caption text appears in the context help window because I don't understand what rules are in place to determine which should appear. It seems like if I reate a named constant, then use it's right click menu command "Create Indicator" I get a control with only a Label (as long as I don't add a caption). This then appears in the context help window as the label name followed by the description text (after entering some description text). But if I add a caption, the label name is shown in bracket
s which is a 'feature' I would like to avoid, because I have certain controls where I would like to use a descriptive variable name on the block diagram side without using so much space on the front panel. It seems like there is no way to avoid showing the Label name in the context help for a control/indicator. Is this true?
I thought the purpose of having a seperate caption was to make the text that appears with a control programmatically controllable, but if that control is not extended to what appears in the context help window, it limits the usefulness of the caption and forces me to re-consider some Label names. However, the problem goes deeper than that because then even when I make the label and caption exactly the same, or if I delete (via a select caption text-backspace or select caption text- delete key .. sequence) the caption for a control, the label name in the context help window still appears in square brackets!
Can I have complete control over the context help fo
r a particular control (or has anyone found a third-party context help solution that functions compatibly with LabVIEW 7 in a built application that they will be so kind as to recommend?)
I have used LabVIEW for three years, and I am now using LabVIEW 7.0.

Sorry for that.. I was changing the text of my question and didn't read carefully enough in the preview stage. I wanted it to read "What determines whether the Label name and/or Caption appears in the context help window?"

• Automatic word wrapping in context help window?

Hello together
I don't get the way how labview does the automatic word wrapping in the context help window. Does somebody know that?
regards
Woodi

I see my problem. Everytime I do just a single carriage return, or a return, the automatic line wrapping doesn't work. But it works fine, if I do two carriage returns.
This is actually not exactly what I want, but at least the user doesn't have to scroll.

• Context Help window is not displaying any information in Stand Alone App

The context help window displays the vi description, as desired) when running in the development environment. However after building the Stand Alone app, while the I can open the context help window using Ctl-H or the front panel menu Help , the help window in empty. The mouse cursor changes to a "hand" while hovering over the icon pic in the upper right hand corner of the Front Panel but does not invoke any change in the help window.
I am using the same PC for development and check out of the Stand Alone app.
Any ideas out there?
Mike

Mike,
Yes, you should be able to zip it or just change the extension and we can change it back. In the mean time I have replicated what you are talking about with a simple executable. However, I think this might be expected behavior. After all, your executable is not a VI anymore. You can also make a product suggestion to have this changed.

• How to keep showing external dialog window in foreground of labview window

hi,
i have run .exe file from my labview using exce.vi. It wokrs too. but i have problem with dialog window from .exe file.if i run .exe file using command line it appears a dialog window named for example 'START' if i pressed yes or No then again appears new dialog window and so on till finished. But problem is the first dialog window appears foreground of my labview and then others background (suppresed).to do further at first i have to minimized my labview window.how could i keep showing that dialog window always foreground of my labview??Thanks.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

You could add code to your LabVIEW program to detect each new dialog, and to bring it to the front. I grabbed the following two links from a similar post, either link shows how to programmatically bring a window (LabVIEW or not) to the front:

• How do you stop the help window from floating to the top?

Is there way to change the help window's behavior so that it acts like a normal window?
It takes so long to set up seeing the problem and the help at the same time, then go back to reading and then back again.
The floating to the top is a very unwellcome "Feature" and microsoft-like not Apple-like.

That depends on your POV. Some may prefer the default behaviour, because it doesn't allow the help window to be hidden by the working window.
Also, keep in mind that you can use the Minimise (yellow) button in the window's title bar.
However, if you really want to change the default floating window, there is a preference you can change with the defaults command:
$ defaults write com.apple.helpviewer NormalWindow -bool true
Alternatively, you can enable Help Viewer's developer mode
$ defaults write com.apple.helpviewer DevMode -bool true

for details.)

• How do you show all open windows in all applications?

Previous to Lion, I used to be able to go to a hot corner and all of the open windows in all applications would appear neatly side by side. Now I get stacks of windows grouped by application. How can I go back to the old way where every window was visible? This is helpful in Photoshop when I need to see all of the images I am working on and all of the images on my website in Safari.

You don't have a hot-corner for that anymore.
You use a gesture for that now. You can either 4-finger swipe down, or place the tips of your fingers in the center of your track pad. Your fingers should be bunched up and touching each other. To show all windows, expand your fingers, as if you were showing someone "5" on your fingers.

• How to add context help text to a property node of an XControl?

Hi
anyone knows how to add description for a property node of an XControl which should appear in the context help window of LV?
In case of a method, the description of the method VI appears on the context help. But not for property node
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Hi Vsh,
You can set the property context help by right-clicking the xcontrol in your Project Explorer, selecting Properties, selecting the "Item Settings" category and clicking on the Property that you wish to write context help for. You will see a box titled "Description" on the right; this is where the context help is defined.
Let me know if you have trouble finding this.

• An OS before 10.10 provided shortcut f10 to "show all open windows". How do we do that with 10.10?

It Has been very convenient at times to review all open windows, especially when working on multiple projects that clutter the desktop. Without the f10 shortcut, I can't easily find my way through the mishmash piled high on my desktop. How do we "show all open windows" with Yosemite??

I'm guessing you are referring to "Mission Control" - the keyboard shortcut for this is set in "System Preferences" then "Mission Control" and I think the default when the system is first setup is F3, not F10. So check out "System Preferences" and see what it currently is and if you want to change it to the F10 go ahead and change it there, along with any of the other shortcuts you might have had before with the previous OS X version.
Good luck...

• How do I show a Waveform using the Labview Report Generation Toolkit?

I am using LV 6.0.2 & have charts that consist of Waveform array type data - how do I break this down properly to using in Easy Graph.vi for the report generation tool kit which accepts on 2D arrays ?

It looks to me like you want to use the Get Waveform Components VI in the Waveform Subpalette on the Functions Palette. The Waveform data type is a cluster of three elements, one of which is the data array. Because you have an array of Waveforms you will want to extract the data from each waveform in the array and build a 2D array of data for the Report Generation VI. The easiest way to do this would be auto-indexing into a for loop. The for loop should have the Get Waveform Components VI in it and then each data array (1D array) will be added to a 2D array using auto-indexing on the way out of the for loop as well.
Hopefully my description was able to help out. I am including a bit of code which isn't really useful other than illustrating the code I des
cribed above. It simply takes an array of waveforms, extracts the data and creates a 2D array of data.
As a side note, I find the Context Help Window extremely useful when using new data types. This is especially true when using Graph and Charts
Good luck!

• Hi, I have this green mark (with pointing arrow looks like a link) on some words show on my window screen when I open a web page, I wonder if it is a virus link or such. Need help how to get rid of it. Thanks

Hi, I have this green mark (with pointing arrow looks like a link) on some words show on my window screen when I open a web page, I wonder if it is a virus link or such. Need help how to get rid of it. Here's the example:
WING
GAMES
MAJORITY
Thanks

If the third link you posted (the link containing the word "majority") does not look like the following then you inadvertently installed adware.
That particular page should resemble the following:
The word "majority" in the third paragraph should not be a link and should not have the green icon associated with it.
To learn how this may have occurred, and how to prevent it from occurring in the future, read How to install adware
Most so-called "news" websites are nothing more than entertainment outlets that cater to prurient interests, and contain advertisements that leave the user about three clicks away from installing junk. If you decide to frequent those websites, Safari's "Reader" feature helps minimize that exposure.

• How to display the master TOC when using Context help in a merged document

I use Robohelp 10. I have created a large Merged Webhelp project and I have set out the project master with nothing in it other than merged projects place markers.
This is the layout of the generated projects etc.
Generate
Master.htm
Redirect.htm (Home page is a redirect to Project 1 Home Page - not in TOC)
mergedProjects
Project1
Home Page.htm
Project2
Redirect.htm (Home page is a redirect to Project 1 Home Page - not in TOC)
Project3 etc.
Redirect.htm (Home page is a redirect to Project 1 Home Page - not in TOC)
I can get the help to work great when I call up the master page, which shows the TOC for the whole project and the default home page. And from the breadcrumb the home link goes to the home page and shows the Main TOC
However when I call a page using context help ID I get a single frame with the selected page. The link to show the TOC shows the TOC but it is the top of the merged project and not the master TOC. The home link in the does display the home page but again the displayed TOC is the one of the current merged project.
The question is :
How can I get the Master TOC to show all the time regardless of what page I call using a context ID or how can I create a link that will take me back to the Master TOC?
I remember when I created a previous help file for chm output I had to modify all the ali files in order for the redirect to work throught the master chm. Surely this is not the case with webhelp?
TonyC

I am sorry that I didn't get back to all you guys that took to answering my very promptly. Unfortunately I was not in a position to answer to the suggestions made. as I was away from my computer which had Robohelp on.
Anyway, I did try a couple of scripts mentioned, but didn't really have any success i achieving what I need to do.
I set up a redirect which redirected to the main home page. I tried setting the home page in a main sub-project - so the redirect when from any sub project
Generate
Master-project.htm (Home Page = Help_Welcome.htm)
merged Projects
SubProject1
[Home Page = home_redirect.htm (a redirect see below) ]
SubProject 2
[Home Page = home_redirect.htm (a redirect see below) ]
SubProject 3
[Home Page = home_redirect.htm (a redirect see below) ]
home_redirect.htm (a redirect use by sub-topics)

//
This setup works fine as long as I call the master page. The TOC is as I would want. However if I call an ID from my application I get the required page to display and I can get the TOC to show. The problem is that the TOC is from the current sub-project and not the master project as I would want.
