How to make/save changes to the file - /etc/httpd/httpd.conf - in Terminal

I'm new to Unix/Terminal and am attempting to make changes in the Apache Web server's configuation file - /etc/httpd/httpd.conf - so that I can use PHP locally. (The "LoadModule php4" has a "#" mark in front of it which I am attempting to remove.) This approach is suggested in the book "Dreamweaver MX 2004 with asp, coldfusion, and php." The book includes instructions on how to adjust the files using pico in Terminal. But the book doesn't explain how to work with Unix/Terminal to enable the right access permission to save the changes in Terminal. I've been able to make the changes in pico the book recommends, but I'm not able to save the changes. I'm the only user of the computer.
Please advise how to be able to save the changes. Thank you!

jamesk,
httpd.conf is owned by 'root'. therefore, to save your changes you need to use 'sudo' when editing the file. before you do that, you should type in
man sudo
and read about what sudo actually does. be aware that it can give you all-encompassing power to do many things - including messing things up.
once you have read about sudo, first do (substitute full paths, if necessary - e.g. /etc/httpd/httpd.conf for httpd.conf)
sudo cp httpd.conf httpd.conf.bak
to backup your httpd.conf file (in case you make an error), then do
sudo nano httpd.conf
to make your changes, then save the file.
then do
sudo apachectl configtest
to test changes to the server config (it should let you know if there is an error).
finally do
sudo apachectl graceful
to restart the server and re-read the config file.
cheers,
b

  • How can I save or export the file containing stored usernames and passwords?

I'm about to update my desktop computer's operating system, which will mean my hard drive will be wiped. I want to save any file Firefox might have that contains usernames and passwords so I don't have to rebuild that file once Firefox is reinstalled. I've found such files for extensions and bookmarks but not for passwords.

    In article: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Password_Manager#Backing_up_and_restoring_passwords
*'''Backing up and restoring passwords '''
**Firefox '''''3.5 and later versions''''', including current beta and nightly builds, use '''''signons.sqlite'''''.
    *'''Troubleshooting'''
**Firefox '''''3.5 and later versions''''' use the file '''''signons.sqlite''''' to store the encrypted names and passwords. passwords.
**You can rename '''''signons.sqlite''''' to signons.sqlite.sav to make Firefox '''''3.5+''''' versions use the file signons#.txt from a previous Firefox 3 or 2 version.
***'''''3.5+''''' = same as '''''3.5 and later versions'''''

  • How do I save changes to the clip and upload to youtube as the correct saved file to show the clip as it has been saved?

After I edit an .mp4 to have a slow motion portion it does not play the saved clip as it has been saved when uploaded to youtube. Is this a youtube issue.  When I watch the same file in quicktime it is is correct and how I saved it.

here is a link to a video that i exported from quicktime pro:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBbGRF0Z9_8
you'll notice the flashing color tints. that is from quicktime pro. the original video was a bit dark, i used quicktime pro to adjust the brightness when exporting, and this is how it came out. it will give you a seizure if you watch it too long. it does this to all of the videos that i export if i try to make the least bit of adjustment. using adobe or any other program the videos export just fine.
can anyone tell me what's going on here? apple's "pro" products are really getting worse and worse. if they want to be a consumer grade company they shouldn't advertise a pro product. and if they want to be a pro company they need to start supporting their products and addressing these issues.
any help will be very much appreciated.

  • How do I stop Photoshop CS6 from asking to save changes to a file when closing the file, after "savi

I save a lot of files to "save for web". After saving PS asks if I want to save changes to the original file. I never want to save the changes to the original. Since the default is to change the file I am afraid I will accidentally OK the change without wanting to. I would like it to stop asking and just not save it. Is there a way?

Then don't work on the original open the file using Photoshop menu file>open once its in Photoshop as a document dupe the document and close the original document. Photoshop will just close the original and not ask it you want to save the original document for no changes were made to it.  You could easily record an action to automate this process. The first step in the action would be an inserted menu item menu File>Open.  The second step Duplicate Document, third step select previous document the fourth and final step close. The action would look like this recorded Work in the dupe and save it under the name you want to where you want it saved. The First step is an interactive you will be able to open any file Photoshop has support for that you have access to.

  • How do you save changes made in iPhoto, and export the changed file.  It keeps reverting back to the original.

How do you save changes made in iPhote, and export the changed picture file? When I select export, current format, it reverts to the original, wiping out all my work.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • How to put incremental change in a file to the disk??

    Hi,
I am having my own simple file editor. Now even if I make a small change in a file and want to save those changes I have to write the whole content again.
I mean it's similar like writing a fresh file.
Is there a way through which I should write only the incremental changes to the file rather than writing the whole thing .
Imp: can anyone provide me some good link or material related to NIO for better understanding.
    Thanks,
    Param.

If the file contains lines* that are all the same length (which can be accomplished by padding each line with the appropriate number of spaces) then you can use an indexed access method, as described by the RandomAccessFile API here:
    http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/io/RandomAccessFile.html
    * You can have all of the data - that is, the entire file - in a single line, if you want; it's not necessary to create multiple lines. In this case you would use a read method after positioning, rather than a readline method.

Is this a particular sender, or all of your attchments?  Google winmail.dat and you will see a number of returns that can explain this, but in short, this is the way some e mail providers deal with attachments.  If all of your e mail is coming that way, you need to change a setting on your isp set up.  Perhaps stary here...

Wild guess: you're using the the wrong export settings. You'll need to tell us more before we can help you - like the export settings you're usng, the size and format of the originals etc.

Either use 'SYLKPIX Developer Studio SE' to develope the RAW files and to save them in another lossless format like TIFF, or try if Adobe's free DNG Coverter can convert your Lumix RAW files to dng. Then import the dngs. This way, your files will still be RAW files.  This works (most times) for my Lumix FZ28.
